That has smoke taint. I've never smelled a white with smoke taint before. And on the palate as well. That shouldn't have been made.

This was poured at home with the Coravin. The wine was mostly clear and Garnet Red in colour with a nose of Blackberries and black pepper. In the glass were flavours of dark berries and ripe red cherries at the end of each sip. There was also a noticable amount of maple flavours as the wine sat in my glass. The wine had a long finish although I was quite surprised that the tannins and acidity were not super strong. Overall, this was a very good wine.

In Feb 2019 this wine was rocking! Deep color, tantalizing nose, velvety tannin. One of the greatest wines I had ever experienced.

Today, that all changed. Sadly, the last two bottles I had were opened and both were over the hill, the first one being worse than the second. The color faded to brick red, the fruit was gone and the aromas went from tantalizing to medicinal. The first bottle did not have anything pleasurable to offer; the second was not as far gone and had some redeeming qualities, but could not hold a candle to what this wine was like 4 years ago.

The wines were stored laying down in a temperature controller wine refrigerator. The corks were in excellent shape. I learned a valuable lesson and will not hold the other vintages that I have of this wine as long.

Wine and Food Vacation…Finally!; 4/18/2022-4/21/2022: Decanted 4 hours before serving. Deep ruby to the rim. A blast of rich red berry fruit is quickly met by menthol and wintergreen which hold serve for the remainder of the bottle. Medium weight, ripe red fruit with complicating black licorice, but no trace of either alcoholic heat or surmaturité. Young still but already complex and interesting. I am extremely impressed that despite my misgivings, this wine did not come across as a high ABV bottling, a testament to its terrific balance. I’d love to taste it again 10 years down the road.

I an sitting here on the second night the bottle was opened, struggling to describe this wine.I have read the other comments and wonder whether I am drinking what they drank. This bottle had been properly stored since purchase from the winery, and is the second of two. I drank the first one without commenting and remember enjoying it, I think, influenced by what other members said about it. Upon opening, the nose was so completely barnyard funk, including excrement, that I didn't think it would be drinkable. I tasted it and it was undrinkable. I speculated that it was corked or a bad bottle and thought about pouring it down the drain and writing the winery for a refund or replacement. Instead, I let it sit in the glass for three hours. I would like to say that the first sip was a revelation, but it was not. It was better but not what I have rated it. Tonight, the funk has attenuated and the nose is leather, camphor, hay and a very small amount of dark fruit. The alcohol is not as noticeable on the nose as it was upon opening. It's a big wine on the palate, with noticeable but not dominating tannin. There is dark, indistinguishable fruit and a pleasant, enduring finish. I cannot predict whether the wine will improve with additional bottle age, but if I had more I would hold it a few more years. If you are opening now, give it at least three hours of air.

I don't recall tasting this upon release so I am guessing that something really bad happened during the past15 years since Parker gave it 98 points. It certainly doesn't resemble a 98 point wine at this point. 15.8 % has not been kind to this over the years. Evidently it has turned from a decent cab into some kind of Frankenstein wine. Drinkable? Yes. Enjoyable? Definitely not. A pruny mess of a wine. I just purchased their newly released 2019 before tasting this and I hope it is a better wine. I truly regret that I have another bottle of this and looking for a smoke recipe where I can use it in my water pan.

Until now, all the Pax wines I've had were excellent and with all the hype, I was looking forward to dinking this bottle, but I did not enjoy it. Watered down, somehow diluted. We had it with a vegetarian chana masala and I was wanting a robust wine, but was disappointed.
  • zinnut commented:

12/3/21, 3:48 PM - If I wanted a "robust" wine I would not have chosen a wine made in the Northern Rhone Style, which Pax is famous for.

Still seems like a young wine. Deep garnet, completely opaque, no brown edge. Prominent blackberry aroma with oak overtones. Full-bodied, only slight tannin, a bit heavy and coarse. Lots of fruit but one-dimensional. Long aftertaste. Goes well with full-bodied food. Drink, but can go another few years easily.

Another disappointment. After last night's dissatisfaction with the 2013, I pulled a 2014 to see if maybe I let the '13 go too long... the '14 was no better. Very subdued flavors, a run-of-the-mill Cab with little charm. What is going on with this wine, I wonder?

Color - Deep Dark Garnet
Nose - Huge nose when first opened, dark berries cherry then began to change fairly rapidly to cardboard, wet paper then to dirty dishrag. 24 hours later most of the unfavorable odors disappeared.
Palate - Smooth tannins, raspberry, Boysenberry, cassis then quickly changed to cardboard and wet paper. 24 hours later most of the objectionable flavors dissipated and back to the fruit but not as intense. Not sure what happened. In my experience these objectionable odors and flavors normally show up when first opened and do not go away. ??????

Jag kan nog inte skriva något rättvist betyg på detta vin då det är så långt bort man kan komma från de viner som jag gillar.
Det är överextraherat, hett, alkoholstark, sött och absolut inget för mig.

A really odd taste, not pleasant. Maybe it was a bad bottle?
  • zinnut commented:

9/24/18, 9:10 AM - The Syrah from the Rocks District is so very different than those from California. They are in the style of Northern Rhone with more mineral, blood, raw meat, black olive. The first time I tried Reynvaan I did not like it. But I found these intriguing and interesting the more I tasted them. They are very polarizing though.

Dark purple and completely opaque. Incredibly powerful nose of black pepper, very pronounced immediately, toasted dark French oak, very distinctive nose. Extremely viscous. Full-bodied flavors of black fruits, a touch of anise and oak, moderate soft tannins and high alcohol, but still extremely well balanced. Very long aftertaste, somewhat hot from the high alcohol. It became smoother the second evening. Wonderful now, but may still develop further with another couple of years. Needs at least several hours to breathe, even overnight. It's a different style than the Oregon-grown Reynvaans from The Rocks vineyard. This is from the Washington side, adjacent to the winery, along with "In the Hills" bottling.

Medium dark garnet, almost completely opaque. Very pronounced aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate, smoked meats. Very elegant and complex nose. Viscous, with slow "legs". The flavor is extremely soft and round, yet still viscous and mouth-coating, building on the palate and becoming a bit hot, with flavors to match the aromas. Smoky and musty on the very long aftertaste. Seems perfectly mature and drinkable, not as powerful as some of their others but maybe even better for just that reason. Nearly perfect!

Awful. WAY worse than when I had a bottle 2 years ago. It was super ripe and a tad hot then, but it was not without some hedonistic pleasure. Now it is a syrupy, unbalanced mess. Nearly undrinkable. My rating is generous.

There is a lot of bottle variation going on with this vintage. Premox in several bottles. Confirmed by the winery. When it is not oxidized it is great. Better drink them if you still have some.
  • zinnut commented:

3/26/15, 10:14 AM - I wrote Andrea at the winery late last month and she responded right away. She said the 2004 Estate Chardonnay had experienced a lot of bottle variation and oxidation in some bottles. I would be glad to forward the entire conversation if you want to provide your e-mail address. FWIW, I am taking one to a tasting tonight and the first one I opened was oxidized. The second one was fine.

  • zinnut commented:

3/26/15, 10:28 AM - 10 yrs out is not what I would consider an early drinker. Those SC wines will age well in general but IMO a decade or more for the chard is about the limit. I do have a vertical with a few bottles going back to 2001.

A fully mature and near-perfect California cab! With hearty lava bean and portobello mushroom stew. Deep garnet-purple, still completely opaque. Easily recognizable as a California cabernet, with pronounced and complex aromas of cassis with some sweetness of oak. Slight acetic overtones. Very rich, deep, complex, mature flavors of blackberries, cassis, and licorice, mixed with French oak. Extremely long aftertaste, slightly hot at the very end, but the finish keeps going. Time to drink up, though...not sure how long it will stay at this peak.
