This was way too good for a second wine, certainly
Above any other second wine I have tasted so far. Notes of Smokey dark berries, dark bitter chocolate, crushed violets, cigar box and sandalwood. The palate showed a wonderful purity of fruit, yet compared to to SHL there were additional layers of cedar, florals and crushed stones. The mid palate felt both layered yet structured in nature, fine tannins with a slightly spicy and long finish. I can only imagine what the Grand Vin is like. Refined

Solid wine. Full bodied, pencil lead, sweet tobacco and dark cherries. Could probably last a few more years! Excellent now, not as refined as the gran vin, but definitely a great bottle that demonstrates the 2010 vintage's power.

Yes, a delicious juice it is. Forget about ratings and enjoy the ride. Creamy, silky smooth nectar with tomato leaf, cassis, black cherry, wet earth, smoke and dark chocolate covered red cherries. Tobacco as well.
Long finish, great balance. Lovely stuff. The wine is at its peak now, delivering primary, secondary and tertiary aromas and flavours. Go get some!

Rich cherry, berry and cedar notes in the nose with hints of rosemary. Well structured with firm tannins. Blackberry and black pepper on the palate. May well open up and develop more complex notes in time.

Delicious nose on the elegant side for Pegau, with garrique and black cherries. Medium to full bodied, opulent and rich and really with some punch. A long peppery and intense finish with chewy tannins. This is fine to drink today.

Second label by an excellent vineyard, this vintage stood out. Absolute fruit jam: raspberries, plum, blackberries, and blackcurrant. This one shows so much life beyond a heavy fruit structure, you’ve got a lot of oak, mineral, and graphite to back it up. Vanilla flavored cigar and pepper to follow it up - 65% Cabernet, 30% merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc - healthy tannins to balance this out.

Quite the production and well structured for a $50 price point. So dark in color, heavy on the nose, and a velvety finish to wrap up a great glass.

Purplish. Seductive nose of dark red fruits and spices. Resemble those from Northern Rhone. Fresh and clean on palate. Dark chocolate, vanilla, mineral. Fine tannin, good acidity. Not a boomer, good to enjoy on its own. A lovely Syrah.

A unique wine that confused me into thinking it was a Cabernet. Showing the herbaceous side of wine, with hints of peppercorn and cedar. Had me thinking Pauillac or maybe a young St. Julien. How wrong I was...Feels young with good energy. Ready to drink but can hold and probably improve a couple of notches depending on your profile preference for Bordeaux. Drink or Hold

Someone had mentioned this was the best Petite Figeac ever - it very well may be! Definitely more going on than the 2016. More succulent than the 2015, have not had the 2018 so ... This is clearly ahead of the class for me too! Why? Well, it's very well structured, but with more depth and fitness. Everything is distinctly Figeac, the taste, the darker currant side of the fruit, the sweetness, and silky texture in the mouth. Nothing acidic or harsh here at all, all flowing nicely. I bet the gran vin is amazing! Good QPR $60. I have the 2018 which was $70. May get another case of this one before it rises.

Earthy, blackberries, herbs, licorice and roses are found in the nose. On the palate, the wine is packed with layers of dark red and black fruits, round, creamy tannins and a touch of roasted, leafy herbs in the mid-palate and in the finish. This baby Montrose is perfect to enjoy while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. Drink from 2023-2038.

Château Lascombes, Chevalier de Lascombes, Margaux, 2017: Deep purple in color. On the nose, ripe blackberries and blueberries evolving towards red fruit, cedar box, vanilla with loads of toasted oak that thankfully integrates with substantial air time. Full-bodied, concentrated, with notes of ripe black and blue fruits going red with air time, nutmeg, green foliage, pipe tobacco, medium-plus acidity, with tart red fruit, powdery tannins and hints of dirt on the long and elegant finish. Needs a lot of decanting to come into its own. Drink 2024-2032. 13% Abv. 92

Coravin’d and blind tasted alongside a Troplong Mondot 2019 and Chateau Giscours 2019. The wine won.

Lovely nose of sweet fruit—almost like a St Emilion. Very nice on the palate. Needs a long decant if drunk now. Too young certainly.

Should get more of this. At $70 or so this is very good value.

Amazing how the wine continues to evolve ever so slowly in bottle. Same dark ruby red color, nose of cassis, coffee, rocks, pencil lead and spice. On the palate structure remains the same, nice mid palate acidity, very terroir driven, almost like a Les Forts de Latour with more character. Superb balance, finishes slightly short with melting tannins. Still very enjoyable to drink today as it was the first time I sampled this with Oz Clarke in 2010!

Almost a year since my last review of this wine - I need to keep my hands off of these for a while, but they are just so good... See my last review for details. This bottle showed the same as the one last year - prototypical elegance and balance. The tannins are still very present, but are ripe and don't dry things out too much. Hold if you have the patience, otherwise enjoy.

aired for 5 hours before drinking, and it would open up nicely with primary and secondary notes. last time a 2 hour decant was too tight. SHL is an amazing winery that brings joy to the world.
as an aside, i reckon a long breathing time is necessary for young bordeaux, esp left bank ones. i wouldn't mind at all to try all these young bordeaux, as most of them are better made in recent years with a less heftier price tag.

The key is to decant this 08 PC at least 5 to 6 hours for it to start opening up.
The wine looks ruby colored. It smells like blackberry and oak. Elegant.

9/15/23, 9:13 PM - thanks for your comment. re breathing, it's intriguing to me. i had a bottle 18 months ago, 2 hour decant was good enough. but recently i tried 3 bottles and found out 5 hours was needed. i'm new to this wine appreciation thing. i think a guideline to how much time is required to air each wine would be helpful. (if there is one, pls let me know)

  • kelvinkyng commented:

9/18/23, 2:45 AM - Mark, thanks for enlightening me. bordeaux red is indeed complex, and frankly quite complicated to handle, esp. risk of bad corked issue with old vintage, as well as articulating its breathing time needed to fit into dinner time. quite stressful lol. so i kind of prefer the younger vintages.
would you have a young bordeaux favourite to recommend? fyi i recently tried a Durfort Vivens 18, needed 5 hrs air time, exceptional.

  • kelvinkyng commented:

9/19/23, 1:23 AM - interesting to see your comment on young Bordeaux.
i ain't an experienced drinker like you guys, but i find the quality in recent vintages (say 15-19) quite remarkable, and priced lower. and if breathing them longer could bring out their inherent attributes, i think people should try them young as well (and be happy with them! this i cannot agree more)
having said that, i still have a long way to go in this wine journey. maybe one day i would only prefer older vintages. thanks for your insight.

Double Blind Wine Tasting. #4 ranked wine of the day. Disappointed as I love this producer and it was such a great vintage. I guessed right on the varietal but though it was an off vintage from a lower quality producer. Great nose, but stringy and medium minus depth. Fades quickly too. Maybe an off bottle?
  • kelvinkyng commented:

11/9/22, 7:39 PM - had similar experience, it opened up after 3 hours, but started fading after 4.5 hours
