Young ginger, pine, and spice — initially a little austere, but with air and temperature comes richness, white tea, saline, and minerality. In retrospect decanting might have been beneficial. Not sure of the base year but it felt a little young.

Based on 2017. This showed best many hours after opening, and honestly, maybe best on day two, when it harmonized and showed focus and balance, and still all of the salty, gingery, chalky goodness.

No firm idea what the disgorgement date is on this, but I would guess 2018-19. Still super young and tense on the palate. It seems like it will be excellent but feels like it needs at least 2-3 years to settle down and integrate.

This was a relatively recent release as it had a Ledru branded plaque; according to CT I purchased it from Crush in 2017 and took delivery in 2018. Very rigid, rock-hard Diam Mytik cork. Was a lovely bottle in an early but wonderful place for drinking. Beautiful balance of fresh, bright fruit and gentle developed richness, rather generous for an extra brut.

Green apple backed by an ample amount of acidity and minerality. Opened much better with air that made the lemony nuttiness pop a bit more. A crushed rock minerality brings in a nice, clean finish.
Enjoyable and easy to drink with food.

New Years Day: Vrai Champagne, Fifth Annual Edition (Brad & Marcia's Place, St. Paul, MN): Pale gold color. Tasting pour x 2. This bottle had been cellared for an additional 5 years from release. The minerality here is fantastic, stone and chalk, layered and chiseled. The minerality steers the ship here. Ultra crisp this begs for some oysters or shellfish. Despite the preponderance of Pinot Noir, the red fruits are much more nuanced and it is the white fruits and tart citrus that are highlights. As noted before these are not everyone's cup of tea and in a sea of wines with more traditional dosage, I may have been an outlier in appreciating this the way I did. 91+ to 92pts.

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): Unspecified disgorgement, from magnum. Super fresh and bright with good energy and plenty of white fruit. A little sweet but also lovely minerality. Delicious stuff, but I'm still not convinced that Ledru is worth the premium it commands for its story.
Not as generous of a bottle as usual. Seemingly reductive(as is the winemaking style, i.e. anaerobic, and never as expressive, textural, as these wines can be.

From the wine list at Hearth (NYC). Final bottle of the night - in lieu of desert (good choice!). I much preferred this to the LeClerc Briant we had at the start of the meal. The bubbles here are much finer and silkier on the palate. It is bright and full of racy acidity, berries, spices and minerals on the finish. Yum!

Recent disgorgement. Blackberries, cranberries, cherries, raspberries, baked apples, burnt sugar, some cookies, kirsch, fresh almonds, marzipan. Dense texture, present bubbles, really noticeable acidity. It's good but it's so much better with some age. 89pt

Sauternes study (Chicago, IL): I get the story behind these wines, but I still have to admit I don't get the wines themselves and why they're so popular. In any case, this is still a solid bottle of entry-level champagne. It seems to show a little pinot heavy in its touch of mushroom, but overall this is clearly acid-driven and very fresh.

Not sure of dosage or DG date and from what I gather should be about 75% Pinot Noir 25% Chardonnay. Most people thought it was Chard dominate. Took about 30-40 min for the mid-palate to fill out, a good bottle but for the increase in price I would pick something from one of the vintage bottlings. Not to say it wasn’t very good as it had wonderful citrus with a touch of stone fruit and a cheek whetting acidity.

Blind "Grand Cru" with Lobster & Flannery Steak (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): I don't know the disgorgement or age here. Very Pinot-centric with so much berry, so little white fruit. I can appreciate the richness without quite the depth I prefer from more balanced Champagne, this is a well made wine in that acerbic, extremely Ultra Brut style.

"Grand cru" blinds (Chicago, IL): Pretty solid bottle of champagne -- shows good freshness and generally good intensity too. A bit of ripeness here gives sweetness to the palate, and there's some good depth here as well. the pinot seems to stick out a bit here.

A better bottle than the last one, or maybe it just needed another bit of age. An interesting comparison to the regular Brut alongside which was bigger and sturdier. This bottle is less stern and more relaxed than the last one. Better with food than without.

Initially exuberant bubbles, and enough pressure to propel the cork a good 10 feet high and across; light slate golden color. Nose brioche, lightly nutty, golden fruit. Palate strongly mineral, richness to the golden fruit yet a strong lemony flavor. Some maple notes and a light citrus pith on the finish.
Complex and classy, would benefit from a few more years (didn't write down disgorgement, but recently procured). 92 pts

This was a really cool bottle. The nose is broad and expansive with notes of brioche, ripe stone fruit, golden apple, and honey. On the palate, it has laser-like focus and precision with a long finish. A unique Champagne that softened up and got more interesting over the hours. Loved the experience!

Roughly four years post release so maybe 2015/14 disgorgement. Superlative. Fully formed, great depth. There is texture and detail here. Always give her extra bruts a few years in bottle.

Whoa, this was a bracing, lean showing especially compared with the Roederer. Not sure why I opened it when I did as I think it would have showed better in another setting. I'm trying to keep track of what release these are so that I can age them for a few years. If past experience is a guide, certain to improve.

Impressive nose - pungent with a huge amount of cut and energy. Tart apple/pear, nuts, ginger, marzipan. There's something else as well - that I feel connects to the apple/pear, the marzipan and the nuts - is it some sort of florals - a little pollen and musky? Sharp minerality. This is very winey on the palate with searing acidity, nuts, dried pear, some sort of pear-lemon-apple-grapefruit hybrid. The finish is just wicked - huge lemon, nuts that musky florality. Great old-school winemaking. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16.5/20.

This is the second of two bottles I had bought. This bottle I had more time to consider and enjoy, which does influence my TN here as compared the one a year ago. This bottle was opened last night, and I brought home the remnants, which was about 1/4 of it. I had stuffed a cork tightly into it, and nicely enough it still retained some pressure for tonight. I really like this champagne, it transmits a transparent quality, something raw. It's got a bruised apple/light oxidative thing going on, joined by lemon and a finish that is savory with a chalky/saline note. This was $50 from Envoyer, and for that price and what's here, this is a delicious wine. Makes me wonder what I'll find when I open up the more pricey Ledru that I was able to source along the way, too. PS--don't have any label details to share but I do know this is labeled as EB, yet I believe it is zero dose.

2nd bottle with consistent notes. No question this is well made, and no question I don't find it in my wheelhouse, probably 100% because it's extra brut. The wine is too brittle and tart to my taste. 85% Pinot, 15% Chardonnay. I liked an undercarriage of raspberry fruit.

Monthly Tasting Group: Champagne and Fried Chicken Taste Off (Brad & Marcia's Place, St. Paul, MN): Small glass over 15 minutes. I really enjoyed this, but as always Extra Brut is note everyone's cup of Champagne. I think Frank Murray III's note is accurate. There is plenty of fruit and brightness along with the crisp acid to make this not the least bit austere or biting. A nice mix of citrus and minerality. Glad to have some.
First bottle tried from this producer. Some salty/saline tones, with lemon and minerals. Refreshingly lean yet not taut as there is fruit here that came through with air. Terrific.

Had (vintage) Ledrus pairing very well with stir-fry in the past, so I grabbed this for our chicken stir fry. Lots of red apples, yeast, ripe lemons and chalk. Good richness and concentration, but lacks some depth as my wife pointed out. Energetic backbone and razor bubbles, perhaps a bit too much right now. As concluded in Jan, some further years of cellaring needed here (note to self: always check TNs no matter the hurry). That being said: last glass we had 4+h from pop - when the buckets of red apples and sharp acidity had settled - was quite stunning.

The style is DRY, in this Extra Brut, (as expected). But this is the most dry I ever had. Very nice Champagne, very fresh. Degorgement is unknown, but came direct from grower, as I bought it from retailer, in April 2014. I think this was too early drinking.

2006 base. This is so good and still so young. Vibrant, with that kind of austerity that Marie-Noelle wines can have. Vinous but the high acidity cuts through. With air, becomes more yeasty. Interestingly, I thought there was some fennel and licorice notes after being open for 2h. Lively bubbles. Can go another 10 years easy.

Even fresher than previous bottles, this light bodied 08 based cuvee has great acidity and reductive apple aromas with hints of seawater and black minerality. Harsh bubbles and an abrupt finish suggest cellaring for a couple years would be beneficial.

Since I'm not very experienced when it comes to Champagne, I will not rate this wine. It is fresh, bubbly, light on color, lots of minerality, not so long lasting in the mouth, and a limited nose. I would give it 85 if I should rate it. A friend of mine had a 1996 champ at the same party on new years eve, and it was much better than this one with depth, darker color and a long lasting mouthfeel. Can't remember the name though.

This wine has razor sharp acidity and would complement oily fish/seafood dishes well. It is not you traditional champagne as there's no dosage ( added sugar) in it. Flavors of brioche, green apple and intense citrus. Very dry with fine mousse. Better with food than on its own.

I really enjoyed this one. 85% pinot and 15% Chardonnay. This is very elegant and very steely. You can definitely tell there is no dosage. A little bit austere with lively mousse, there's a hint of red fruits with lemony notes. With air, more yeasty/brioche notes. Not a Champagne for everyone just like the Vouette Fidele we had the day before.

A better bottle than the last one, or maybe it just needed another bit of age. An interesting comparison to the regular Brut alongside which was bigger and sturdier. This bottle is less stern and more relaxed than the last one. Better with food than without.

music under the stars: Mytik diam cork.
