SAC: Evening of wines with some duck (Decoy): Very much that slightly funky style of champagne where there's a bit of oxidation maybe but it means it. Sour in style. Interesting to drink and a wine that is kindof fun to see how it pairs. From a large format (champagne esp always better in big bottles).

Tasted alongside Fidele, both disgorged June 2020. (d'Argile was R16, Fidele R18).
This poured medium gold, and put on quite an austere showing. Super acidic, driven by mineral and tart citrus. Better on day 2, but will definitely wait a few years before I open the next bottle. Preferred Fidele but didn't love either.

Bleibt - in bester Erinnerung. Großartiger Stoff!

Transparent golden with delicate bead. Nose slightly toasty, honeyed. Palate a slightly nutty golden apple note, with time develops a lemony note. Good strong acidity balancing a fleshy golden fruit flavor, and a honeyed character at times.
Made in a slightly oxidative style and I think benefits from early drinking, not sure if anything to gain from aging. But a rounded and deep champagne as it is right now. 91 pts

Had some funk when first opened. Kept softening and clearing up with air. After a couple of hours, it showed lemon, pears, minerals, with mushroom on the finish. It had a softness I didn’t get in my prior bottles from the same disgorgement. Almost Chablis like. I love this Champagne.

DG 12/2017 R15 A very good expression of this vintage; heavy on ripe yellow fruits such as pineapple, mango, guava, banana, pears; quite oaky on the nose and spice-dominant with pepper, vanilla and clove; lemon candies, verbena, a hint of pastry cream, sea salt; highly mineral with wet stones, some metallic notes and wax. Juicy texture and refreshing acidity. I’ve always loved this wine and this bottle isn’t an exception, I like their style full of minerals and ripe fruits. 91pt

Aromas of florals, orchard fruits & rocks. On the palate yellow and green apples, lemon peel, biscuits, nuts and minerals. A generous vinous champagne that I always found to be a good bridge between Champagne and Chablis.

Champagne of exceptional quality, texture, acid and flavor. Such complexity you are unlikely to find with BdB. Would be amazing with food. Would hold up in the same way a big Chardonnay would.

Late night MingHin (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Disgorged January 20, 2009, R05. Bready and an interesting dustiness on the nose. From the same batch as last time: R14 and Disg early 2017. We only drank this during its weird phase this time (see my previous note). A little oak heavy, but good citrus, esp lime. A touch disjointed between nose and palate. Excellent acidity, but adds to the sense of disjunction as it is a little out of whack with the oak and oxidative richness. Probably needed a decant; wish I had read my previous note first.

This needs a ton of air, maybe a decant. R14, disg 01/02/17. After about 5 hrs open, the bubbles are still intense, and the oxidative notes on the nose have softened a bit to reveal more pure lime, sweet apple and a hint of vanilla...almost like a Cramant BdB, but with a superb oxidative touch. On the palate, excellent acidity, more pure lime, like a weightless meringue in character, followed by a soft grapefruit mousse. This was weird at first, but slowly revealed itself to be an absolute stunner.

Very pure, focused expression. But not much else. This lacked much in the way of complexity or depth. Not completely austere but not exactly inviting. Maybe this will age into something better. Maybe it's just trying too hard to make a statement. Poor value.

Bottling R-07, disgorged 9/12/09. This is all about purity and precision; bright pear and citrus fruit at its core accented by chalky mineral and bready notes, with bright acidity keeping it very lively and precise. With air it turns more savoury and doughy, and it's incredibly refreshing, light on its feet and very easy to drink.

(disgorged 01/2010) Vibrant citrus aromas at first, with faint bread and nut buried rather deeply in the background. Lovely entrance and first attack; a beam of expertly infused lemon-lime covered rocks that carried a pleasing current of electricity. I felt compelled to drink a second and third glass. Then I was left wanting more, something I seldom (read: rarely) find to be the case with Extra Brut. Exquisite, engaging, and deeply satisfying. highly recommended, 12,0% abv

Disgorged Feb 7th-2012 -- 2009 vintage. Pretty similar to the one drunk last November. A powerful wine in a rich vintage balanced by a fine minerality and chalkiness. Peach and oak notes. The richness is more apparent on the finish. A nice champagne.

Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Opened and served immediately.
Yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout with light, short beading. Nose of light sherry notes with good spiced pears and baked apples. Flavors of yellow pears, lemon curd and yellow apples. Medium to bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold. I'd likely go ahead and drink.

Disgorged on Oct 21-2011 and based on 2009 Vintage. Bottle #753 Great Champagne. The Extra-Brut philosophy was very welcome for such vintage (2009). You can detect a certain richness and power but this is balanced with the absence of dosage and acidity. Clay notes with a hint of chalk as well. Citrus fruits. Steel notes. Not very yeasty and particularly bubbly (by no means aggressive bubbles). Very good.

Interesting wine that I found more interesting than exciting. Green apple aromas with some raw nut character. Apple and pear on palate with massive acidity and texture and a very yeasty, leesy nature. Perhaps the Extra Brut character is unfamiliar, giving a searing feeling, but I think this is an interesting, eccentric wine that might not be for all tastes.

Birthday Dinner at Eleven Madison Park: Very tight to start, opening up considerably with air and increased temperature to show a bright nose of baked apple and mineral. The palate is zippy and fresh, with considerable depth of orchard fruit and showing just a kiss of oak. Finishes long with a lingering saline element. Beautifully complex now and something I wouldn't hesitate to give some bottle age.

Disgorged 9/12/09, bottling R-07. Starts out dominated by autolytic bready notes at first, but with air the yeasty elements move to the background as fresh pear and green apple fruit emerge with a flinty, chalky mineral base beneath. Very pure, precise and refreshing - glad I have a bottle of this.

Decanted for one hour prior to serving. The nose reminded everyone of Fall- ripe fallen apples, hints of baking spices. This was tight and tingly on the palate- lots of bright Sweetart candy like acidity. This is definitely pretty unusual- if you don't like oxidative-like aromas and flavors stay away. A terrific wine with food- its complexity melded well with the fried chicken dish we served tonight.

Well, I didn't get a chance to note the vintage or disgorgement date of this bottle - since it was served in a decanter and the bottle promptly whisked away - but it doesn't matter. What matters is that this is an absolutely incredible bottle of Champagne that's showing much more development in bottle than the last one I had; in fact it tastes kind of like a Salon halfway to maturity - apricots and butterscotch and metal shrapnel. At Le Baratin.

TN: Weird and wacky wines at Joe's (Joe's): Disgorged 10/28/06. Whaaahhh!!! This hurts! What, did Joe think he hadn't tortured me enough already with tonight's lineup? Blistering, corrosive acidity dominates. The first thing that came to my mind when I tried it was the blood from the Aliens in Alien. Coad fills me in saying it was "molecular acid." Yeah. That, combined with Klingon pain sticks. D.

disgorged: 20 Dec 06, based on the 04 vintage. Sourdough and brioche, with an alkaline note, like damp cement. On the palate the fruit is steely and pure with hints of lemon chiffon, lemon zest and green apple. It seems to be more dense in horizontal fashion than linear. And there's a smooth chalky note on the finish. Above all else this is unique. I can't really tell whether it's peculiar or site specific. Perhaps a little of both.

This is the 05 version. I have tasted the Fidele a couple of times and have felt the oak was too dominating in a otherwise good wine. This had a lot of sediment witch i have only experrienced before with some selosse bottlles from the late 90´s. While not in the same league, this is really good, the oak is there but more as a background play. the ripe pure fruit is quite powerfull but with good acidity . very diffrent from cote de blancs chardonnay and not the most elegant Blanc de Blanc you can find, but the charming and original personalinty of the wine makes it worth seeking out

Great stuff. Head to head, I'll take the Fidele but this wine is no slouch. Zero dosage. Big acids and minerals. I'm a fan.

Confraria - Espanha (Arturito): Sharp acidity! Brioche, yeast, a hint of rusty. The aromas are still closed. Long finish. Very complex. Great!!

Pretty similar to the one drunk last November. A powerful wine in a rich vintage balanced by a fine minerality and chalkiness. Peach and oak notes. The richness is more apparent on the finish.
A nice champagne.

musedir Does Dallas! (Citrus Bistro, Dallas, TX): WIML92

(07 base) Very different champagne, lovely expressive nose of nuts, dried fruits and some citrus. Tons of green apple on the palate with searing acidity and nice chalky minerality. A very good wine, but not one for a casual champagne drinker

Great Champagne.
Very good.

Lots of acidity. Think of it as a strong sour apple note. Fairly yeasty. Opened up better after an hour.
