Lovely nutmeg and cinnamon on the floral nose Predominantly red fruit of cherries, cranberries, and raspberries on the tongue. Lingering notes of cola, tea, and vanilla oaky notes Fantastically balanced Fabulous with grilled salmon tonight!

Seven years since my last notes, and this has developed into something very special. This is probably one of the best Pinot Noirs that I've ever tasted, solid effort.

Subsequent notes on this wine from close to three years ago. Deep, dark garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe red fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries & plums with overtones of floral & earthy notes, spice notes of nutmeg & cardamom, sandalwood, smoky, herbs, minerals, anise, tea & hints of oak/vanilla. Medium-full bodied with an excellent concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, plush, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, raspberries & cranberries with spices, some cola, herbs, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 12 years of age is close to its peak of development but should hold for several more years if cellared properly.

Drank as a side by side with a 2010 Copain Kiser en Haut pinot. The Sea Smoke had more of a garnet, slightly orange/brick color to it showing some age but still had quite a good amount of red berry fruits (fresh and dried cherries and pomegranate), some sweet spices and herbs and a decent amount of oak still coming through but well integrated. Medium acidity. Minimal tannin with a silky smooth mouthfeel. Moderate+ finish. Paired perfectly with duck breast served with a cherry reduction sauce.

Decanted and drank over the course of 2 hours side by side with the 2009 Southing. Initially and throughout the evening, the 2010 was much more approachable and fruit forward. Still plenty of primary flavors of cherry while the 2009 was much more tertiary in nature at this stage. Good now and still has more life left.

Found this puppy hiding in the back of the cellar, 1 hour slow ox and it blew us away. Vibrant fruit, secondary and tertiary flavors emerged. I usually drink the 10, but this is why I first fell in love with Sea Smoke!

This has improved since the last bottle. Still smoky, still full of sour cherry and nicely balanced with a touch of acidity. But with age, this has developed some delicacy and elegance...approaching Sea Smokes Ten. No mistaking that this is a Sta. Rita Hills Pinot but has started to develop some Burgundian characteristics.

I can see why it has a lot of fans, but not really for me. Day 1, sour cherry and that's about it. Day 2 more developed with some additional depth of flavor with some herbaceousness amd strawberries.

Muted nose, not much happening. Red fruit on palate with some tartness. Medium acidity. Medium body. Felt this wine was a bit muted. Maybe getting past its prime, but still enjoyable.

A longtime friend visited us today at our rental property. We have an annual Christmas tradition of me giving him a bottle of Pinot and a coffee cake (homage to my mother’s Christmas coffee cake) and he shares his allocation of Sea Smoke. He gave us this bottle and a 2015 Southing today. In honor of our tradition, we are enjoying this 2010 tonight.
The nose reveals; mulberries, boysenberries, plum, dark cherries, blueberries, fresh & dry cranberries, poached strawberries, raspberries hovering on the edge of the glass, steeped fruit teas, touch smoke & soft grilled meats, subtle, sweet, tarry notes, dark, rich soils, dark chocolate, limestone, crush, dry rocks, understated caramel/mocha notes, bay leaf, soft sage, dry stems, dark, fruit licorice, light, dark spice, clove, nutmeg, hints of vanillin, barrel char with fresh & withering, slightly candied, dark, red, blue & purple flowers.
The body is round, full, lush and velvety. It glides beautifully over the palate. The 2010 is around its peak with 5-8 years of good drinking ahead. She is an elegant beauty. The tension, structure, length and balance are in a great place for many but, I think even better in 2-3 years. Mulberries, boysenberries, plum, dark cherries, blackberries, blueberries, fresh & dry cranberries, poached strawberries, raspberries haunting the secondary fruits, steeped fruit teas, touch smoke & soft grilled meats, subtle, sweet, tarry notes, dark, rich soils, dark chocolate, limestone, crush, dry rocks, understated caramel/mocha notes, bay leaf, soft sage, menthol, dry stems, dark, fruit licorice, perfect, dark spice with just the right amount of palate heat, clove, cinnamon stick, nutmeg, hints of vanillin, barrel char with fresh & withering, slightly candied, dark, red, blue & purple flowers. The acidity is nearly perfect & holds back the slightly higher ABV. The long finish is a darling, elegant, sexy, beauty with great balance & polish polish for days that slides into a spicy, round & drier, tarry, tannin presence that persists minutes.

Drank beautifully, lush dark cherry and cranberry, low acidity with a lingering mouthfeel. This bottle still tastes youthful to me. Since this is the first I've opened of two 2010 Southing's, I don't personally know where on the Bell curve it's at. My feeling is that there's no immediate rush to drink the second bottle.

Fresh nutmeg and cardamom on the nose leading into a rich front of dried cherries and plum. Mid palate is a luscious transition into some still sharp acids and a delightful finish that carries the fruit and acid nots forever. This a significantly better wine that it was 4 years ago and I hope I can find some more in the cellar:-o

Decanted and drank side by side with 2009 Southing for Thanksgiving. This bottle tasted and looked like the older wine of the two. Cork on the 10 was deep red with sediment unlike the 09 that had little red and no sediment. Both were purchased upon release and stored in cellar. Most of the group preferred the 10 as it had more fruit with softer tannins than the 09 with less fruit and more tannins.

Attractive pale ruby color fades toward the rim. Notes of red flowers, plums, dark cherries, black raspberries, cola, vanilla, cedar, spices, and earth. The wine is light bodied and dry, with medium tannins, high alcohol, and high acidity. The finish is long and luscious.
This is an elegant, delicious wine that has definitely lost a step, but it still has it where it counts. Drink now.

Decanted about 30 minutes. There was slight medicinal smell and bits of green grass on the nose. Don’t like that. In the mouth, medium red fruit with hints of cola and vanilla. Got better as more air got to it as well as adding some food. Soft and velvety. Smooth finish. I wouldn’t wait any longer if you still have this. I feel it is on the edge.

Clear medium ruby wine with a distinct garnet rim. Medium+ to heavy tearing.
Nose: Clean. Developing with moderate notes of fresh baked cherry, strawberry, and black plum. Red flowers, violets, tea, and a hint of mint, dry herbs, and black pepper. Baking spice and smoke.
Palate: Dry with red and black fruit. Slightly tart baked cherry, strawberry, and dk cherry. Violets, tea, soil, and hints of mint. Smoke, toast and baking spice. Med tannins, high acid, high alcohol. Round with a lean mid-palate that disapears when the bottle has been open for a while. Well balance with fruit slightly more pronounced than non-fruit notes. Moderate+ finish and complexity.
When first opened the acid was well balance with the fruit but over the next couple of hours the wine started to become more flabby and eventually fell apart. Drink now.

This was very good, and a bit surprising to me as I tend to think of SB pinot as something that needs to be consumed in the first 7 years or so. It's definitely made the transition from fruit driven to an herbal and savory character. Good amount of spice box, touches of oak, raspberries and hints of cherry throughout. Very nicely textured, with well integrated tannins; showing a lot of complexity for this region. Still delivers with a rather weighty mid pallet and finishes for 30 sec +. Very good to see these can age a bit.

This is exactly where I like Pinot Noir to be, savory. Very herbally driven aromas profile still showing strawberry rhubarb, cherry, and spice. Flavors of strawberry pie and black cherry with a peppery spice. Mid weight palate with silky tannins and a nice balance this wine is at its best right now. Long lingering finish of black cherry and dried herbs

Popped and poured. Dark ruby color. Nose of pure cherry pie and cherry liquor with some baking spice and sweet oak. Very slight hint of heat on the finish but medium acid and sweet tannins and a smooth mouthfeel make this very enjoyable to drink. Still lots of primary fruit so I will let my other bottle sit for a few more years but very tasty now.

Buoyant and lively out of the bottle, without all the nuttiness of the last bottle. Cherry Coke and Boston Cream Pie. Settled in nicely against a Tuscan steak and won the night against a Hewitt 2011. At least for some. The Hewitt kinda lapped it way, way later. All in all, who am I to complain? Sea Smoke continues to deliver.

Big, bold California-style pinot. Popped and poured. Notes to follow. The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like strawberry, blackberry, cranberry and cinnamon. It tastes like blackberry, raspberry and red currant. The body is medium/full. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Since I've last written a note on this wine, it has softened some and shed some of its youthful exuberance while still retaining its Sea Smokeness, which is to say that it's still fairly forward with bright, dark red fruit, cola notes, earth and spice. The oak treatment is abit heavier than I prefer, but overall, a very nice effort.
Nose started with strawberry and cherry. Started a little hot, but calmed right down after 15 minutes in the glass, turned into that beautiful earthy fruit forward coastal Pinot that we all love. Paired this with mushroom soup, and man was that spot on. Still has another couple of years, but why wait.
Came out of the bottle a little cray-cray and overbaked with cola and tea flavors. I sometimes think these guys overdo it. But it settled down nicely for an evening of delight. Not as delightful as my last bottle tho
Actually quite similar to my prior note...drinking really well.....don't see a huge need to wait to consume but could be interesting if you have multiple to see if it changes and gains more earthy notes with a few more years in the bottle.
Very well made wine. Nose is full of red fruits: cherry, cranberry, red currant. A touch of alcohol on the nose as well, but it blew off after 30 minutes or so. On the palate the wine is very lush and round. The tannins are not bitter at all. A pretty big dose of well-integrated oak. Flavors of cherry cola and spice box. Not sure the QPR is there, but it's a good wine for those who like to chase labels.

Nose of black cherries, a little earth, a teensy bit of heat and perhaps the faintest hint of holiday spice. The front presents a balanced attack of acid and fruit while continuing the cherry theme. Mid palate to finish darker fruits emerge and the heat kicks back up a smidge. Tannins and acid are present throughout so this wine should surely progress with the years.

Popped and poured, could have used a short decant. Nose of black cherry, cola, clove, and black tea. On the palate, black cherry, cola, spice. Finishes with quite a bit of tannic grip and sharp acidity. This probably needs to be held a couple more years to smooth out the sharp edges. Drink with a decant or hold over the short term.

Deep, dark and fragrant as is to be expected. Great acidity and bright tart dark berries. This is too young and the most striking thing is the rather aggressive tannins. Give this a few years but it certainly has chops. Seasmoke continues to surprise me lately.

Deep, dark garnet in color. Forward, fragrant & youthful nose of ripe red fruit aromas of cherries, strawberries, raspberries & plums with lovely floral notes, spice & herbal overtones, earthy, minerals, tea, a touch of anise, cherry-cola and a hints of vanilla & toasted oak. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of youthful, still developing, smooth textured, rich, ripe fruit flavors of Bing cherries, sweet raspberries & tart cranberries with kirsch, spices, herbs, cola/sassafras, earthy, minerals and some vanilla. Smooth lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present but has the depth, fruit & structure to develop even further. However, it seems to be further along in development than earlier Sea Smoke Southings.

This version of the Southing has a dusty quality to it...certainly more tannic than in years past. That's not a bad thing...just a bit different for a Sea Smoke. This is very dignified...enough fruit to complement the tannin and a very long finish...best enjoyed slowly.

Opened last night, decanted and had a couple glasses. Had I rates last night it would have been at least a few points lower. Alcohol was a bit over powering and it came across disjointed. Tonight the wine has filled out, gained weight and balance. A combination of tart, dark berry fruit, well integrated tannins, earth notes and mild spice. Based on my experience I would suggest a very long decant or maybe a two day evaluation.

Popped and poured, was consumed over about 90 minutes. This is the first time I really spent time with a Sea Smoke and I was pleasantly surprised. From what I have read in CT and other places I expect a much bigger fruit forward Cali PN. This wine was surprisingly restrained, if anything it maybe could have used more fruit and was a bit thin. Overall it was a well structured with dark fruit, sour cherry and some earthiness and funk on the a nice long finish. For a PN there was a decent amount of tannins which did give it an interesting mouth feel. The first glass was while preparing Pizza so the wine was consumed alone, the additional glasses was paired with the pizza. The wine work well in both conditions. with the first pour there was maybe a bit too much heat from the Alcohol on the finish but this blew off by the second glass and the wine handled the 14.5 ABV very well. Gave it a 91, would have been higher with a little more structure.

Seriously? This wine is obviously well made, but it lacks everything I love about Pinot Noir- it's cabernet in drag; overblown, planky and generic. I've tasted this wine several times to be sure I was giving it a fair shake. Is it my imagination, or is the cabernazation of pinot a trend?

Soft nose of cherry, tar, crushed pepper and spice. Opened after 45 mins of glass time, and started to develop some depth. Too young today, the unique spice element within this wine may make it a standout Pinot in 4 to 5 years.

What this wine lacks in primary complexity at this point, it certainly makes up for with deliciousness. The alcohol is kept completely in check with a nice balance of acidity and fruit concentration. This was opened and slow ox'ed for 2 hours prior to consumption, which is recommended. I expect great things from this wine in 5-7 years.

Thought I'd try the 2010 tonight and found it to be quite delightful. The nose is abit reserved but on the palate the flavors of dark fruit, earth, spice, cola and black pepper have a rich, slightly feminine edge with good depth and complexity. Pretty good with nice acidity and some cola notes on the palate. Seems a little more fruit forward compared to previous vintages and also seems to lack the 'bigness' of previous vintages, which may not be a bad thing. Could still benefit from a couple of years in the bottle and was substantially improved after a few hours in the decanter.

92 - Really great stuff with a beautiful nose and fantastic red fruits bursting out. Rhubarb, berries, silky smooth with a light-medium body. No wet earth or mushroomy character that I noticed at all...just red fruits which were great but note that when pairing with food. Looking forward to trying again after a couple of years to see if it gets more complex as I didn't sense layer after layer at this point. Surprised how much I enjoyed this as I usually like a little less fruit but it will be tough to keep the hands off of this for 2-3 more years (2015-2016) when I'm betting it will be better

Subsequent notes on this wine from close to five years ago. Deep, dark garnet in color with ever so slight clearing at the edges. Initially reticent but with extended airing eventually developed into a full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe red fruit aromas of red cherries, strawberries, raspberries & plums with overtones of floral & earthy notes, spices, herbs, minerals, tea & hints of vanilla &cedar. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, raspberries & cranberries with spices, herbs, earthy, minerals & a hint of vanilla. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present & at 8 years of age is either at or close to its peak of development but should hold for several more years if cellared properly.

Thanksgiving 2018. Wine was decanted for an hour.

Long lingering finish of black cherry and dried herbs

Since I've last written a note on this wine, it has softened some and shed some of its youthful exuberance while still retaining its Sea Smokeness, which is to say that it's still fairly forward with bright, dark red fruit, cola notes, earth and spice. The oak treatment is abit heavier than I prefer, but overall, a very nice effort.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of berries, plums, white pepper and black cherries. Flavors of black berries, black raspberries and black cherries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold.

Popped and poured. Needs a LOT of air. This is the cabernet of pinots. It's a very big wine. Not burgundian at all.
Having said that, it is a delicious wine. Nose of cherries, cola and oddly, apple. Taste similar to the nose, but no apple.

Big dark and beautiful with loads of ripe cherries on the nose, a little oak and some herbs. Palate is big but sharply delineated. A hint of oaky vanilla in there. Still somewhat tannic and youno but I really like it. Happy to have some more.

The wine looks Rosy colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Cherry, and Alcohol/Hot. It tastes like Vanilla, Oak, and Cherry. The body is Light/Medium. The wine has Satin-like texture. The wine finishes Long. Let this open in your glass to catch some air and you will be well rewarded. When you first take a sip it's a little out of balance but once it opens up it is truly a beautiful wine.

This is quite nice with a long satisfying finish, but it was quite closed on opening and needed about 4 or 5 hours of double decanting to open.
