In s good state, bur maybe tipping over to too mature, feveloped, for my taste. Starting to get heavy, still a lot of freshness, tropival, peteo, lime. For my taste, drink up.

Stunning. Tropical fruit, stone dust, ample dry extract. Long, gorgeous finish. If blind, I would have sworn this is Keller- stylistically nearly identical.

Lovely bottle - really well balanced with generous fruit on the nose and lots of acidity and minerality on the palate. Intense, concentrated, powerful with great weight and impressive length. Slowly drink up. 93-95

In a fantastic state now, but should have many very good years to go. Beautiful stingy acid, citrus, lime, touch of tropical and petruleum, so good balance, dead dry but fruit feels sweet

Not blind, Magnum, side by side with 2021 Beside the 2009 the strongest Felseneck for me. In this hot vintage a brilliant fresh wine. Lemon driven, no petrol, no burnt notes. At least 8-10 more years. 95

Lovely and racy. Needs to be drunk at between 50-55 deg F to balance out the 13% alcohol and show it's tartness and acidity and fruit properly. I really like it this way, but suspect I would love it at 11% Abv or lower. In a good place, unsure how much upside. Maybe a tad but I don't have a lot of experience with GG wines.

WOTN in a serious lineup goes to the 2011 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG. Not considered the best vintage for german riesling this wine proves over and over again that vintage is less important than producer. One of the best rieslings I’ve had, perhaps the very best. Consistently great! See previous notes.
Apricot and citrus pith, slate on the nose. It's toothsome, structured, and chiseled in texture with bright acidity and freshness especially for the vintage. Stone and soil more than fruit driven. Outstanding. 94+

Final bottle from a three bottle lot. In excellent shape, one of the few GG's from 2011 to display this level of freshness and minerality. Still a clear hint of S-F "sponti" om the nose. Quite vibrant and youthful - could easily be mistaken for a younger wine. The finish is quite broad, but unlike the previous bottle this one comes across as well balanced and harmonious. Another five years in the tank, maybe a bit more.

blind I nailed the grower but I guessed it a bit older. Still in great shape, for me one of the best 3 Rieslings out of Germany in this hot vintage. Comparable to the bottle I had 3 weeks before. 95

Tart nose without so much as a hint of fruit, rather flint and smoke. Palate with bitter notes, zest, sturdy tannic structure. Really fascinating wine, still so fresh with years to go.

1986 Bordeaux plus some supplements (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Popped and poured. Clear, pale golden color. Classic SF Nose with some notes of spontaneous fermentation, reduction, flint, smoke. On the palate with a very good tension, lots of mineral notes, some zesty bitte notes, some grippy tannin. It can’t deny the warm vintage and has some warm, ripe yellow fruit. Very good length. Still potential for improvement and certainly one of the top GG’s of the vintage. 92-93+

10 years after Riesling tasting - 2011 (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Sophienwald Universal Bottle double decanted about 7h before the tasting. Clear, pale golden color. Unusual SF Nose, reduction notes barely noticeable. Exotic fruit, spicy. Very good wine, but a bit broad. Ripe, exotic fruit, great mineral core. Not as precise as the Hermannshöhle. Potential for 2-5 years. 91+

Second bottle from a three bottle lot. Last tasted in February 2017, when it was still relatively youthful. The nose has matured well, it is delicately waxy but well defined, with its bright grapefruit and passion fruit and smoky slate; the palate is juicy and a bit fluffy, but it retains its remarkably pungent acidity; the finish is still tight with a touch of warm spices. Still going strong, but it is not completely harmonious and I would suggest drinking this over the next 2-5 years.

Glorious wine! Lots of tart apples, pear, lemon and lime on the nose, mixed with some beeswax, iron, flint and chalk. On the palate masses and masses of mineral mixed with assorted green and yellow citrus, unripe grey pear and wild apples. Has broadened a little since last bottle but still very focused and sharp. Lots of texture and extract, at times almost chewy. Long, tight finish with lemon, lime and mineral.
Very, very good! Best showing so far but no hurry. Will last.

Sublime wine. Opened 4 hours in advance, just took the cork out, poured a bit in the glass to check and back in to the bottle. Beautiful acidity, laserlike focus. Ripe white and yellow orchard fruits. Lovely minerality. Truly a great wine that is drinking wonderful right now but will last for many years to come.

Excellent showing and the best showing yet of the 3 bottles of this I've opened. I've always liked this wine -- I think S-F did '11 just right -- and it's in a great place now. While still young, it's wide open with layers of bright fruit and seriously intense minerality. I think it will improve and reach greater heights. And as a bit of nostalgia, this still had the Premier Cru import sticker!

Erinnert vom Geschmschsprofil her stark an den Halenberg. In Summe (mit ordentlich Luft) sehr schön! Jetzt und bestimmt noch 5 Jahre. 94-95P

not blind The first one was badly corked, the second one had the typical SF Felseneck nose and the charme of the 2009 vintage. Lush yellow stone fruits, maybe a hint to sweet but balanced and in a nice drinking window. I had some fresher bottles but this one is still the tip of the broader 2009 vintage. 93-94

Another gem from SF. This one still clinging to that classic SF reduction but with a nose of cooling spices, herbs, sea breeze, shrimp shell, lemon pith, grapefruit. Very, very mineral with great acids (especially for 11). This has the chassis for the long haul, no rush to drink.

Wow. Straight after opening some harsh aftertaste. Still extremely tight, balanced and rich. Let half the wine stay 24 hours in bottle -- omg! Just opening up completely, the harshness turns in to mango and tropical citrus fruit. Sits looong with excellent acidity and finesse.

Several years since last bottle. The wild, yeasty side has been tuned down a bit but this is by no means a quiet wine. Pear, lemon and lime mingle with an intense herbal bonanza: mint, sage, basil etc. Hints of petrol and loads of smoky chalk. On the palate very energetic with still fresh acidity and just amazing depth and detail. Layer upon layer, but still no real signs of age: no golden fruit nor sweetness to speak of. Very, very long. Best wine over two days of many good wines.

Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting *** Glass: Gabriel Gold Tasted blind. Bottle opened about 2-4h before, double decanted before serving. Unmistakably Schäfer Fröhlich nose! Deep, complex and a bit dark. Reductive, smoke, speck, tropical fruits. On the palate also a bit reductive with ripe fruit. Very long and deep. 2011-2013 Felseneck seemed to me a bit more muscular, rounder and with more ripe fruit and less precision as the Hermanshöhle and the Halenberg. Very young with great potential. 93-94

"Wines that don't suck" (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Clearly riesling, but lacking the acidic cut that I expect from most of the German ones I drink, I went to Alsace as my guess. There's a slightly funky nose, with a bit of sponti that gives this a whiff of durian. The palate has some white pepper, but the spice and fruit profile here was definitely in line with riesling.

DMG, blind I guessed Halenberg 2010, unbelievable fresh, the typical SF nose after wild yeast fermentation, drier than the Hermannshöhle 2011 from Dönnhoff. Great lemon and grapefruit concentration and refreshing salinity. I prefer the regular bottle of 2011 at the moment because it is more accessible. For the next 10-15 from this bottle size. 94(96)

What a wine, the 2011 Felseneck delivers an amazing experience tonight. There is balance, profound minerals, intriguing tones of petroleum and adding to all this is a length on the finish which seems to never end. Perhaps this is the best Felseneck I have ever tasted. The experience is razor sharp - to say the least. The nose reveals deep minerals and citrus zest, peach, soft exotic fruits and lime. The complexity is simply amazing with several layers of impressions passing by. The palate is of course balanced and integrated, although it has a structure and texture telling me the wine will last for a long time in the cellar. Length on the finish lasts some 50+ seconds. Certainly a wine which is moving from good to great. This is a true gem which should be enjoyed if given the chance. Lovely!

Bought on release and cellared for five years, I thought it was about time to check in on these and get a sense of their evolution. I'm happy to have caught this when I did.
The nose is a lovely taut blend of cotton candy, lime, grapefruit, Granny Smith apple and a hint of gasoline. But it's on the palate that this shines. It has really amazing weight, just unfurling across your palate. After swallowing the dryness is immediately evident but the weight remains, as if it has changed from liquid to vapor form.
This is entirely ready in the sense that it provides a fantastic drinking experience at the moment, but it will evolve into a different kind of "ready" with time and will be fun to follow over the coming years.

Two sides to the aromatics - green and gold. Lime zest, dill and basil on top. Sweet exotic fruits underneath. Wet rocks and a drop of diesel. On the palate, sunny ripeness sets the tone, with notable sweetness and a hint of alcoholic warmth. Luckily, there's enough acidity to balance and lighten up the picture. Yes, it's a generous wine, but not overblown, and it drinks really well at the moment - neither young nor mature.
GG Dinner (Table, Donkey & Stick - Chicago, IL): Another fantastic showing. Gorgeous nose is lifted, precise and layered with green apple, grapefruit, minerals, exotic spice and a hint of fermentation yeast. The palate is loaded with taut acids that are matched by powerful ripe, but bone dry, fruit. Long, lemon-line filled tart finish. In my GG wheelhouse.

Grosses Gewächs night (Chicago, IL): #21-12, 13% abv. While there was a slight bit of sponti on the 2012 Kupfergrube, the stink here is even more pronounced. The nose shows a good dose of white fruit, as well as some floral and honey notes, and the palate is zesty with some sour pineapple. There's a bit of a candied quality here, but none of the sweetness which leaves me scratching my head; the acidity is fairly pronounced and juts out a little bit more than I like.
One of the best GG´s I ever had. Its starts already with the nose. A bouquet of sweet citrus (!), pineapple, ripe grapefruit, passion fruit, peach and slate - all interwoven with each other. On the palate not bone dry, but with present acidity, freshness, depth, seems still very youthful, creamy, sappy and with a long dry aftertaste! 2 bottles left and it will be hard to keep them longer in the cellar. Superb value!

Tasted blind. Very flinty, gunpowder nose with juicy pear and grapefruit aromas. Focused, on the drier side, very pure and clean in its expression. Great acidity and a long palate. It doesn't seem particularly 'Riesling' to me and it definitely isn't Chardonnay. Maybe from Loire? Should get even better with time.
Wow, this is an amazingly good dry Riesling. Huge nose that leads with diesel and then layers in ripe orchard fruit, flint, smoke and minerals. Palate is concentrated and dense but so lively and taut. Long, long finish.

Wow, wow and yet wow... This is a total stunner tonight. So balanced, so much minerals, so much intriguing tones of petroleum and on top of that a finish that seems never to end. Again, I have to state this is most likely the best Felseneck I have ever tasted. The crisp, clear yet razor sharp expression is still there and more eloquent than ever before. The nose exhibits rich deep minerals and lemon zest, peach blossom and lime. The complexity is totally mind-boggling with layer after layer emerging as time goes by. The palate is balanced and integrated but still offers up a deep structure without being austere and the length on the finish lasts some 55+ seconds. Certainly an effort which has moved from good to great. This is a total stunner which deserves all the merit it can get. Bravo!

Almost four years since I last tasted this, and it is showing well. Decanting helps to blow off the remaining aromas of spontaneous fermentation and to dissolve the carbon dioxide still left in the wine. It is now approaching maturity but it more youthful and energetic than some other GG's from 2011, which seem to be ageing quite quickly. It is all about citrus and minerals, with a touch of Nahe fruit salad. Stylish and elegant, this is a beautifully balanced Felseneck. Drink now - 2023+.

Just as astonishing as during my last tasting. This effort is on a beautiful trajectory. Again, I have to say this is perhaps the best Felseneck I have ever tasted. What keeps on impressing is the massive but at the same time razor sharp expression. The nose exhibits rich deep minerals and fruits like lemon, lime and peach. The complexity is amazing with several different layers emerging after some time in the glass. The palate is balanced, integrated and has a classy structure. The length on the finish lasts some 55+ seconds and help pushing this wine from good to great. Though it certainly drinks well tonight too, perhaps with some air first, this effort will continue to develop for many years to go. Lovely!

A totally brilliant wine. Perhaps this is the best Felseneck I have ever tasted. The 2011 Felseneck has developed incely since my last tasting but it still has both a massive and razor sharp expression. The nose delivers abundant minerals, rich deep fruit like lemon, lime and peach blossom. There is also a whiff of white flowers. There is amazing complexity and layer after layer opens up with some time in the glass. The palate just adds to these lovely first impressions. It is balanced, integrated and has a superb structure. The length on the finish lasts some 55+ seconds and "puts the dot over the i" for me. The overall impression is super positive. This is a super dry riesling, without slightest doubt one of the best there is and it will continue to defvelop for years in the cellar. Though it certainly drinks excellently tonight too, perhaps with some air first. Just amazing!

Dekantert 4 t. Duft av epler, fersken og mineraler. Noe grønt som stikker. Intens. Svært konsentrert smak med saltaktig mineralitet. En del bittertoner i finish. Virker noe knytt enda.

Lys sitrongul. Noe lukket nese, men svært tiltalende.
Ekstremt mineralsk, men mindre «salt»i dag.
Perfekt balansert i dag.
Seriously good wine. Ripe stone fruits and white flowers on the nose introduce a palate of hyper-concentrated Riesling fruit framed by prickly minerality and an acidic spine, all while maintaining an opulent creamy texture. Really energetic and intense, and nice depth and dry extract. One to seek out.

Great delicious Nahe Riesling, grown on the quartzite-slate-basalt soils of the steep, south facing ‘Felseneck’ vineyard (Bockenau, in a side valley of the Nahe). Beautiful, still youthful lemon-yellow in color and an intensely aromatic nose revealing abundant mineral elements, aromas of lemon zest, banana, white blossom, but also some animal fragrances (sweat, cow house), likely a result of the use of spontaneous yeasts for fermentation. The extremely refined palate offers wonderful stone and citrus fruit, a juicy freshness, the whole accompanied by a perfectly balanced acidity. Very long finish and a great potential to improve.
Zeer lange afdronk ; groot ontwikkelingspotentieel.

I can't add much to Karl's note along side mine here... for me, though, this was offering perhaps the most elegant and evocative palate texture and lingering complexity of any Riesling I've experienced. I was absolutely floored by the grace in which this wine carries into the finish. This is one of the classiest wines I've had, and is the best wine I've drunk this year. To be even better I'd appreciate all that palate complexity to show up on the nose as well, which was slightly quiet by comparison. I agree that these need to be enjoyed today to as not miss what's going on now, but that said, this will age beautifully for 40 years as well; it will just become something different, and I'm not sure which will be better.

Drank this at dinner in a local restaurant in Portland with my host friend David. Popped and poured. This is my 2nd time ever I've had a German wine, and I was massively impressed. At first I was doubtful about the scent (aromas of petroleum, which, even typical of some Rieslings, I am not a bit fan of). But then, the attack on the palate, midway through, and finale are all moments of intense pleasure. What struck me (in a very nice way) was the fizziness on the attack, this freshness gave it a touch of acidity and was very welcome. The finale is very long, and makes you beg to take another sip sooner rather than later, just to carry the dream.
Another very interesting thing was how that wine paired with foods such as oysters and raw fish. When you sip the wine right after the food bite you just had, the Riesling takes over all the flavours in your mouth, shining like a bright star, until the finale, where amazingly enough, it gives way to the flavours of the food bite you previously had, and that comes back to your taste buds for a beautiful "encore".
This wine is drinking very well right now, and unless you have many bottles in your cellar, I suggest you start drinking some now and enjoying.
Thanks David !

This is an excellent GG - pale yellow color, with green apples and spiced pear on the nose. In the mouth, it's a fruit kaleidoscope - pineapple, green apples, a bit of bananas, with a good body and a long finish. If I had anything to quibble with this bottle, it was the absence of the power one can find in the top GGs, but this was a mouthful of pleasure.

Stinky, with sulfur on the nose, but with time it cleans up a bit and gets very interesting, even though it does not get completely clean. It starts just sweet on the palate, then a touch of bitterness, almost rhubarb. Wonderful!

Riesling rendezvous (Bern, Switzerland): Woof, this screams of massive sulphur to the point of rotten eggs. I tried to get underneath that, and there was some tangerine and nice acid. However, for me this bottle was just flawed. (I did try to follow it for a few days, and the sulphur dissipated a little bit but remained very prominent.)

In the back of my head I had for some reason more or less written off the 2011 german riesling vintage. The wines I've come across have felt hard and angular, lacking in fruit and balance, sometimes even a bit unclean. But this is now in the past. The Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG is simply spectacular. In this wine the components finally add upp: high, slightly rough, citrus acidity, pear and grape, a ton of minerals and a drop of diesel. It has intensity, balance, elegance and a lemon/mineral finish that just goes on and on. A truly great wine and one of the best rieslings I've had. Ever.

First GG I've ever tried and not sure how I feel about it. This is clearly a "very good" wine. Tropical fruits, a thick waxy finish, but tons and tons of acidity. I definitely like it, but something feels out of balance, as if the thicker texture and acid are fighting for attention, and there's no sweetness to mediate the battle.
Initially I find this a little hot, and the nose dominated by the slightly yeasty note that I guess is the 'sponti' thing. Open for 4 hours or so, though, it becomes a much better integrated wine, and really has spectacular concentration and intensity. Give it time, though.

Amazing. Full stop. The best Felseneck I have ever tasted. This 2011 is astonishing with a flat out massive and at the same time razor sharp expression. It is a more than impressive wine which every Riesling lover should seek out and buy every bottle they find. The nose makes a very Fröhlich typical first impression with massive fruit, lemon, lime, lychee, rich peach and beautiful white flowers. The nose is totally dense fully packed and yet so beautifully complex, I am totally blown away. The palate certainly does the nose justice. It is balanced, integrated and has enough structure to move a parked lorry from a non-parking zone. The length on the finish just goes on and on and adds to overall experience in an amazing way, but certainly nothing less than expected... Overall impression is just mind boggling. This is a super Riesling which will continue to grow for years in the cellar. On the other hand it drinks excellently tonight too, perhaps with some air first. Utterly amazing! (score is without the slightest doubt 97)

Seemingly even better than a bottle from a few months ago. Stunning aromatics and really impressive concentration and precision. Another amazing young Schafer-Frohlich GG.

Extraordinarily powerful nose, possibly the most pungent in terms of pure fruits I have ever come across. Given the reputation of this wine I was therefore really rather excited. And thus slightly disappointed. There was much of course to recommend it. The initial burst of fruits was cut short with almost rude abruptness by a wall of stone and slate that is undeniably impressive. However, this impression of mineral-based purity was rather diluted by considerable effervescence that took some time to subside (i.e. better on day two). Once it did the fruits rather dominated the other elements and detracted from the hint of austerity that I find so appealing. This seemed to need a fair few years more in bottle for everything to come together. Taken in isolation each aspect of this wine is absolutely first class so I have no doubt that the future holds great things for it. My score however is for the wine as it stands today.

Consumed over two days. This simply smashing Grosses Gewächs presenting a pale yellow robe and weighing in at 13% alc. There is brilliant transparency to the fruit, which is a pure and fresh expression of pithy pink grapefruit, lime and lemon, stony minerality, and a hint of apple. The palate is also dominated by a powerful acid-driven citrus profile, containing lovely weight and a full body. Entry is a little zingy and the mineral laden spine carries the fruit to long, focused finish. A truly excellent wine that has a wonderful 10-15 years ahead of it.

Klaus-siege (At my place.): At first quite muggy nose. Sulphiric? Reduction? Yeasty? Something like that, by aeration it reduces but never completely disappears during the night. Anyway there are lots of cool, crispy citrus as well and slatey minerality. In mouth it's really nice. Full with juicy fruits, freshness, delivers lots of tension, electricity. Structurally dense, muscular, focussed, acidity is precise like razor. Spectacular one, but had a hard time after the previous 2 wines.

Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club"; German Riesling Großes Gewächs (@ My place): Beautiful bouquet with flint stone minerality. On the palate extremely clean with a beautiful play (or how to say it) between the sweetness and acidity. Joyful, but also serious and complex. A beautiful wine which is a great pleasure now, but in fact much too young. 94++ for now

Preparing for our next Dreamtasting @ Thijs' (Netherlands): Expressive Riesling bouquet bursts from the glass. Great balance in sweet and sour. Candyshop, candied lime, fresh and tingling moutfeel, serious and complex mid-palate. Bright, tight and very young. Needs a couple of years to develop a broader shoulder. Fantastic dry Riesling. (+)

Crisp, fuller bodied with nice lingering finish. Terrific acidity. From a standalone standpoint, this is a great wine. From a quantitative standpoint, this is probably not worth the GG premium over many of the other wines we tasted on this night.

Will last.

Glass: Gabriel Gold
Tasted blind.

Lys sitrongul. Noe lukket nese, men svært tiltalende.
Ekstremt mineralsk, men mindre «salt»i dag.
Dag 3

Amazing.
