Rating wines is all about expectations. What do I expect - or want - from a 22 year old village Burg? Truth and beauty, or at least a little of these things. And tonight that’s what I got. An honest Burg, true to form. Really a very pretty nose - strawberries, cherries, some earthy violets. The palate was nicely red fruited, softened beautifully with age. Not silky, but gentle. Plenty of depth, but not powerful. Some nice secondary development in the earthy, mineral vein with everything nicely in place. Good balance, medium body and length. Nothing too much - not overly complex, but not wimpy. It’s satisfying when a village NSG punches above its weight, but there’s a real pleasure in a nicely aged wine showing its virtues but not excessively. Bravo. Compared to the 2010 this is a bit less hedonistic, but with the summer shine of the vintage it still has plenty of life left.

The most expressive aromatics among three 02 red burgs, and the only village level wine. Lovely spice, smoke and earthen accents to still fresh black cherry aromas. Palate is nicely concentrated, at the 1er cru level, as the old vines work their magic. At peak.

Burgundy BBQ (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Double blind in what turned out to be a 2002 flight. Clean and bright black fruit, I thought this showed 1er Crus concentration, and thought it younger than its actual age. Very good now.

Deep cloudy ruby with some bricking. Earthy and truffled nose with blackberry and cherry. Super bright cherry and high acidity on the palate, lingering finish with some wood and a touch of bitterness. Popped and poured but it really opened up in the glass after an hour.

This village wine is coming into its own. There's earthy, smoky elements that blend with still prominent fruit, and are framed by maturing, softening tannins. Quite easy to drink through at a rapid clip. I see no danger in holding this for quite a while longer, but certainly enjoyed drinking it now.

Fantastic wine! The nose was smoky, meaty red cherry fruit with a mineral note and the wine was smooth with high acidity. Just a treat with smoked duck breasts.

This bottle was much better than the last few. Now into it's prime drinking period. Still a somewhat short finish, but the nose is now open, the fruit fresh, and an altogether good wine for a village wine.

Vertical Tasting of Chevillon Nuits Vieilles Vignes (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): Medium saturation of color, not that much darker than the '04. Very seductive red fruit nose that screams Burgundy but also whispers southern Rhone with a noticeable herbal element. Some smokiness also appears. Back to a more typical weight and density with bright acid, excellent complexity, and resolving tannins. The most soil-driven wine so far. I must say that I was also surprised by the fact that this is essentially mature. It left me thinking about whether I should take a look at other Cote de Nuits village '02s.

Reddish orange color. Nose of smoke and red currant. On the plate, Strong red cherry with cinnamon and orange peel. Long finish with some unresolved tannins. Second night. Flavors are more defined and intense. Tannins are more integrated. Better wine. This wine will get better with a few more years on it or decant a long time.

Well balanced - nice acidity. Earthy and full with some nice red fruits. Enjoyable - a nice bottle of wine. (can I use the word "nice" one more time?!?)

Dusty, medium to dark brick/garnet in colour. A complex nose of red and black cherry, earth, soy and leather; after initial barnyard notes that blow off after a few minutes in the glass. Savoury red and black cherry with a sour edge on the palate enhanced by a harmonious acidity, clads a frame of rustic earthiness, over a firm mineral foundation. Balanced with soft tannins, and a mere nuance of bitterness on a medium-length finish. Over two nights the wine gains in aromatics, weight, and spiciness on the finish. Worth cellaring for the long term.

Tasted side by side with a couple CA Pinots. The Chevillon showed better acidity and focus. The earthiness stood out. Dried red fruit. Some Pinot perfume. Nice, but, predictably, not as exciting as some of the 1ers Crus from Chevillon in 2002... Side by side, the 2002 Littorai Hirsch had a bit more fruit and was actually quite Burgundian in style.

BBQ w/ John and gang--nice sappy pinot, new world-ish in some respects, but the earthiness on the palate gives France away. Big juicy fruit, with earthy palate and finish. Not a "mind boggler" but a nice pinot.

I received this instead of the 00 Cailles that I ordered. Called and was told they were out of the Cailles and that this bottle was better and worth more...not accurate and a little underhanded, if you ask me. Nonetheless I am not making a big stink about it... At first I thought there may have been a slight hint of TCA - for the first 30 minutes I would get a trace of cardboard. However, as time progressed this faded and eventually disappeared - I assume it wasn't TCA since it usually becomes more pronounced. Without food, this seemed fairly simple, sour cherries, short bite. With food (and probably aeration) what followed was an increasingly rich, medium bodied, luscious wine with scents of bing cherries, white flowers, pot pourri, slight earth and an expanding mineral finish. By this I mean the finish seemed to become longer and longer as time progressed. Everything seemed in balance, mildly tannic in a good way - the kind that barely grips the tongue just enough to make things interesting. Good concentration and overall mouthfeel. I have a difficult time rating this wine because it is entirely different with and without food...but on a pure pleasure zone off the cuff number, 91.

Barnyard / horse stable aromas. A bit rancid and sour in the mouth. Well over the top, at least this bottle.

Stunning wine. Not being a cru but "Only" Chevillons basic is mindblowing. After 2 h decanting the wine shows so many layers of classic bourgogne.
