Decanted an hour before tasting, this was clearly big and ripe but also firmly structured. I decided to go in a different red Burgundy direction for the evening, took the bottle home, and re-visited several times over the next few days. The structure slowly softened along but commensurate with the fruit, so this never really reached the great balance of the best bottles. This has often been a confounding wine, but most previous bottles provided much more enjoyment.

Simon Beatty's Memorial Dinner - Table 2 - Richebourg (Noizé, London): A rare treat to try one of these. The deep red fruits are complimented by a little citrus lift, some peony and a hint of blood. Palate is powerful with some tart cherry interest and some smoke. Producer does well here with the difficult 1995 vintage.

Friday Night... Great Burgundy Night (Asian Spice House - Buchanan MI): Alongside the 1998. I almost always enjoy this wine more than others do, and tonight was no exception. A rare 1995 that comes across as ripe, but also meaty, powerful and burly. Never nearly as finessed as the glorious 1998, yet I find great beauty in its slight awkwardness.
From half bottle. Not corked but perhaps the bottle was cooked or mistreated somewhere along the way in its lifespan. Wet cellar smell on the nose but the wine still tasted somewhat regal. I just couldn't get past the nose though. Too bad.

Man what a treat to have tasted this wine. On the nose it was such a burst of powerful perfume that consisted of decaying flowers and berries. There is also notes of VA that is a bit stronger than I was comfortable with given how delicate everything else was but still worked relatively well where the experience was not ruined. Regardless it is one of those wines where you can gain full satisfaction just through nose and the palette is just the icing on the cake.

1989 - opened 3 hours before drinking. Early funk blew away leaving a lovely wine that drank well but no fireworks. Gained a little more weight towards the end of the evening. Drink now 92 1995 - opened about 6 hours before drinking. Still quite tough with a big tannic structure. Least liked wine of the flight tonight. Can try and keep for a few years but doubt it will improve. 91 1998 - 3rd time drinking this wine. And this was similar but certainly a step up from the other 2 earlier wines (1989 & 1995) which demonstrated the wine making improvements and evolution. I liked this straight from the beginning but towards the end of the evening felt that it was a little short and the 99 and 02 were better wines with the 99 WOTN for me. Start drinking from now 93+ 1999 - opened 2 hours before drinking. Loved the structure and felt that for a 99 this was surprisingly approachable. Took some time for the wine to evolve with the 98 starting off the blocks for me but 99 catching up and surpassing it at the end of the evening. Long finish with so much more possibility to improve. Drink now for another decade at least. 94+ 2002 - opened from early morning. A very different nose from the rest perhaps reflecting its relative youth. Just a tannic Monster at the beginning but eventually softened a little towards the end of the evening. Has great potential but I would hold back drinking this for at least another 3-5 years. 93 2005 Bourgogne Blanc - surprise addition by Mr L. First time with a declassified white musigny for me and I m not quite sure of what to make of the wine making approach which I felt was similar to arnaud ente. A slightly oxidised reductive and concentrated approach with orange peels and toasted burnt almonds. I feel too much wine making and not enough terroir? Interesting nonetheless.

Popped and poured. Looking at the tasting notes from other CT users, I might have let this one sit for some time. While the nose had some funk and sous bois on it, the palate was remarkable with an elegant finish. Not quite a Musigny nose, but silky and refined as you would expect on the palate.

Decanted 4 hours. Dark red fruits, ripe, concentrated. "Big" wine by Vogue standards, just bordering on over-ripe but this bottle stayed on the good side of that line. Still a long life ahead, and might improve. A-

White Truffle Dinner: Single blind 93/95/98 vertical. My second favorite in the flight and one of the better 95 burgs that I've come across. A hedonistic, sexy nose with black cherry, asian spice, tea and brown sugar. Plush and forward ripe fruit on the palate. Good depth. Excellent now.

Fifteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Lake Bluff, IL): Single blind in 93/95/98 vertical, these were tougher to correctly identify. So much here, not as brawny as the 1993, but not as fun as the 1998. So tasty, but also still so much upside.

Very vivid right after opening, red fruit dominant the nose. Concentrated but not heavy with pretty high and pronounced acidity. A little bit of wood, vanilla with some orange peel and blackcurrant. With great “sweet” and long finish.
Special Burgundy Dinner (DC/Silver Spring MD): Double decanted back into bottle 1.5 hours before tasting. A touch hot on the nose with powerful red fruit, some cedary notes and some mint. Candied tart red fruits, light earth, some savory notes (rust/iron/blood?), moderate drying tannins with strong strong acidity. After 3 hours this started to get a touch lighter and fruits moderated and became dryer. Still pretty primary. Good now with a 2+ hr decant, but I think this still needs some time.

Chez G, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - dark, not dense, garnet, hint of lightening on rim; very attractive, complex bouquet, sour black cherry, touch of spice, sous bois, iron core, high toned; medium bodied, long, persistent, austere, complex and very classy, ready but should hold and possibly improve, needs a touch more flesh for better than F+ (18)…...another 95 which is nearly, but not quite, "the business!"

Decanted 2 hours but needed 3 hours to really open. Very nice red burgundy with ripe, red, concentrated fruit. Finish had just a touch of stewed fruit to it prior to the supporting tannins showing up. I think this still may improve a bit with time, but is very good now with 3+ hours of air. A bit atypical, as it is perhaps just a touch overripe and powerful, but it is a very good wine that will probably improve. A-

Beat your 2017 WOTY Dinner: Bottle #27. Raspberry, soil, cherry, mixed spices, graphite and red licorice on the nose. The palate has fabulously fresh and stylish red fruit character, giving it some brightness even with a slight softening from age. Really good texture and excellent length. Really hitting its straps.

1st of 12. Decanted 1 hour. Deep ruby red. Full bodied with initial black and red fruit and then earth, mushroom and vegetation. Dry and slightly astringent finish. Drunk with a rich beef wellington and was an excellent match. 4/5

Thirteenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): Served as another blind "bonus" bottle. Lots of sweet black and red fruit with so much concentration. Incredibly elegant start, with lots of power middle forward. Playing the player (as well as the wine), I was able to correctly identify this exact wine, which is easily my favorite 1995 of all time.

Six Decades of de Vogüé Musigny: 2013 to 1969 (Vaucluse): This is actually much showier than the ‘96 or ‘97 on the nose, Nice earth-driver sauvage behind rich red and blackberry fruit. Palate here is fresh and flavourful. ‘99, ‘98, ‘97, ‘97, ‘96, and ‘95 Are all remarkably similar.

Has great colour and little sign of age but is a little sharp on the finish and which rich and dense it lacks real oomph , my first taste of the De Vogue Musigny and a good intro but not out of the box at all.

Drinking beautifully out of magnum, it seems to be in mid-age with lovely deep black cherry fruit along with hints of minty forest floor and smoky minerals. Fairly extracted in the recent Vogue style and I don't taste excessive oak although there is a bit left to be absorbed. Lots of vibrancy and intensity with good acids to go along with a fine, lacy texture. Finishes complex with notes of minerals and red/blue spice. I think this will continue to age well and soften into an elegant Musigny over time. Game dinner at Daniel. 94+

Powerful! The nose is impressive and complex, and the palate has a very good structure. Deep Ruby with berry, floral and spice. The wine is still young and need some time to develop. Black fruit, mineral, forest and herb. fine tannins and long finish.

Remarkably deep primary ruby. Cranberry nose. Big and highly structured right out of the bottle with fierce tannins and acidity, and tart red fruit. With time, it relaxed a bit and showed more earth and feel. Still, I must say that at least at this stage, it is a wine that is still somewhat hard, lacking charm and texture like other Vogüé wines from this period. There are layers underneath all of this, but I wonder whether they will ever come to the fore and show the magic of this cru. I would be sorely tempted to hold off on drinking other bottles for another decade, that is how unready this is now.

Deep ruby color. Powerful nose with dark fruit, spice, earth and floral elements. Dark fruit dominates - blackberries with a hint of dried fruit also. Spice tends toward clove, espresso, and soy. Quite mineral and stony as well. Medium body and fine tannins with racy acidity. Complex, beautiful wine. Still needs more time. Try again in 2020.

The nose was somewhat reticent upon opening. Dark and ripe as others have note, but I find more black fruit than red fruit flavors. After about 15-20 minutes in the glass it opened up and there was great minerality in the long finish - the minerality had clay and limestone etched into it. The fruit is big, and tends to dominate the structure without any particularly focused flavors. So to sum it up, ripe black fruit in the palate followed by a long minerally finish.

A fascinating wine. The wine starts with a dusty chocolate note on the nose. The palate has tremendous depth of flavors with lots of dark fruit and a touch of "orange dreamcicle" that is classic Musigny. But, where does the chocolate come from? It was pleasant but unusual. I subtracted 2 points for the uncharacteristic nuance.

A 1964 birthday Celebration (Sepia - Chicago IL): Open 2+ hours before serving. Certainly the most controversial wine of the evening, this was consistent with most other times I've had this wine. It is oddly incredibly lush for a 1995 with a peculiar combination of a richness and herbal elements that I can only best describe as mint chocolate chip. I find this so much fun and powerful, while others find it nontraditional. I liked this more than many others tonight, but I always do.

Dark red with ripe, red fruit a and dusty earth on the nose. This needed an hour to start to open up, and two hours to hit its stride. Ripe and concentrated fruit, but with minerals, supporting acid and some tannin yet to resolve. Wonderful balance, if not a little bigger than you might expect for this wine, it seems to be headed to a great place with a bit more time. I would give it a few more years before the next bottle. Opened 2 hours ahead. Very tightly wound at first, giving very little. No real bricking to speak of. But when drink time came, it was coming around. very classic "iron fist in velvet glove" style. Very long finish, good acidic grip, but a very classy wine. Got lots of time left, but not sure its going to get any better. Having said that, it was alongside some great company (see below), and the 2001 really outshone this 1995. Had it in some fine company - the 2001Vogue Musigny, plus 2000 Bonnes Mares Mugnier, 2004 Dujac CDLR, 2001 Echezeaux Mugneret, NV Billecart Sous Bois, Dagueneau Buisson, Raveneau Chablis Tonnerre 2005, Which made for a great night.

A Few Wines at Wally's Inaugural Wine Auction (Whitney Museum of American Art - New York NY): Open approx 2 hours before serving, then served alongside the Drouhin 1995 Musigny. Lots of forward and precocious black fruit aromas with very enticing, complex spice component. I thought this started lush but picked up more power and firmness in classic Musigny style towards the finish, but some other experienced tasters didn't think this as classically Musigny as the Drouhin. I certainly preferred the Vogue for drinking today, but think the Drouhin might be a better bottle 2025 and beyond.

Pungent nose of medicinal cherries, minerals and fecal matter. Quite firm and unyielding at first but then opened some to show deep medicinal cherry fruit and mineral flavors. Full-bodied and quite structured with good acids and a firm backbone. The finish is complex but still fairly primary with more minerals and that fecal matter. Stubbornly young or maybe not the perfect bottle of this although purchased on release. A great wine when it fires but there has been irregularity from bottle to bottle. 92?

Acker Merrall BYO (Domaine Storage - Chicago IL): Tasting. From magnum. Fresh and powerful black fruit aromas with background spice. Acker BYO (Domaine Wine Storage, Chicago IL): nose: gorgeous and flowing nose filled with tones of red fruits, violets, fresh picked roses, perfumes, cherries and all sorts of spice tones. All sorts of depth with a real sense of class to it as well.
taste: very silky and elegant medium body with medium/high acidity that is still showing in a big way. The structure on the palate is a bit on the imposing side, but there are extremely pretty tones of red fruits, violets, roses, red cherries and spices with some wild flowers as well.
overall: this was from magnum. I got to this a bit later and the nose was showing extremely well. The structure on the palate was pretty big and this bottle did need some more age. Still, it was showing off some of what it can do and there was a lot of beauty in it.

Acker BYO (Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL): From magnum. To me, this came across relatively dormant...its fruit and earth shrouded by its intense structure. What I liked about this was how elegant the fruit showed, despite it being somewhat mute. It was giving off subtle aged meat notes and had a spicy edge to it that was really sexy. This will take some time to open up and gain in complexity and expressiveness, and when it does I imagine it'll be truly classic.

A deep, dense Musigny that's more masculine at this point then I would've expected. Big, woodsy and powerful with gobs of delicious dark cherry fruit and notes of forest floor, strawberry spice and menthol. Finishes deeply concentrated and complex with mineral and spice notes. Just beginning to open up and should improve dramatically over the next few years as this is really impressive juice. 95+

Pre-La Paulee Dinner at Zachys Auction and After-Party (Michael Mina and RN74 - San Francisco CA): This was a tough day for 1995 Vogue. both this Musigny and the Bonnes Mares underperformed vs. expectations, and this Musigny has been stellar for the past couple of years. Nose showed mostly lean black fruit with just spice hints. Palate showed slightly more accessible fruit but the tannins were dominant. Not sure if this is a representative bottle, but if it is. I'd now set this aside for a decade+.

Lightest color of the flight. Initially a moderatlely intense smoky/toast component to the nose. In a small way, some similarity ( but not as intense) as previous bottles of the '90 that I have had. Some spice, cinammon, menthol notes. Dark fruits. Ripe with pretty soft tannins. Very nice length and probably the most approachable initally of the flight.

Still quite deep with a touch of clearing at the rim. Still deep and brooding on the nose, but with some really great perfume coming out over an hour or so. There is great dark cherry, almost stony plum type fruit, and this beguiling floral- seductive nose. supple and masculine, and quite powerful but beautifully balanced and with really lovely mouthfilling perfume, and excellent sap. This is still early peak, but I feel this will be a great bottle of wine in a few years. I was in the minority here, but my favorite of the flight, and one of my favorites of the night. 95pts (4 views)

Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) (Palm Beach Gardens FL): This wine really stood out positively above expectations, much like at a Vogue Musigny dinner last year. Ripe black cherry and blackberry aromas with good floral background notes. Same black fruit on palate with lots of dried herb from middle to end. Good structure, but this fairly ripe Musigny is most likely entering its peak drinking window now, on the young side for a great Vogue Musigny.

This bottle had a lot of funk and I thought it was ever-so-slightly corked but the sommoliers at Blue Hill, NYC didn't think so. The fiunk burned off the nose with time and the wine was much bigger than I thought possible for a Musigny with a real brooding quality. The fruit was deep, dark and red and the wine was deeply concentrated and maybe just beginning to turn towards secondary flavor development. Needs time but I still maintain that even though perfectly stored since release, something was slightly off here so reserving judgement. 92?

Vogue Musigny Dinner at Charlie Trotter's (Chicago, IL): Served single blind in a flight of Musigny. Decnated 2+ hours. Truly sensational in every way. OK, this showed lots of ripe fruit, with flavors of black cherry particularly prominent. Good floral aromatics and great spice on the palate along with some cocoa and espresso. This has so much concentration and dry extract that it lasted forever and ever on the finish. Really sensational, if not completely "classic" Musigny. Seemed much more vibrant than when tasted in SF earlier this year.

Burgundy Dinner: Pre-Paulee with Zachys (Quince - San Francisco CA): Very nice red fruit on the nose with mild spices. Fruit a bit more dense and concentrated on the palate with better spice. Tannins less dominant than for many 1995s at this stage in their evolution, so this is starting to drink well. A very good Burgundy that didn't necessarily show a lot of "Musigny" character to me tonight.

What a difference drinking a magnum (last time) or a regular bottle (this time). Still a more than excellent wine. It opened up only after being decanted over 1.5 hours. But then... yes, this is Burgundy as it should be. Very deep, rich, still a little tight. I love this.

This was really tight and required a 4 hour decant to start to reveal anything. On the nose, cedar, roasted peppers, tomato vine, and watermelon. The palate was not as giving, with beef bullion, spice, chalk and iron. I bet this will take another 5 years to start to reveal itself - or maybe 50 years.

Tasting of Italy by the DRC-club (Brugweg - Velp): "Crazy" Bob served this wine (from magnum) blind at the end of an Italy tasting. I am a great lover of Burgundy, admire Vogüé and consider Musigny one of the greatest vineyards in the world. But at first smelling and tasting this wine, I was completely lost. Is this pinot noir? Is this Burgundy? Yes, no, yes, no, wait yes. I admit: I did not one second suspected this wine was in the glass. Luckily I have an excuse: the wine was too cold and only opened up after about 20 minutes in the glass. But then the identity of the wine was already revealed, so was I influenced by its exalted reputation? I don't know, I only know that it matched the previous wine of the evening completely (Gaja Barbaresco 1961). Wow, this is so dark and dense, the "sparkle" of the great Burgundies should have given it away (wisdom with hindsight...). Wow again, thanks Bob.

So different from another bottle tried at a tasting a few months ago, this came across as super-concentrated with massive, alluring black fruit and great spice. some thought it slightly New World in character, but i just think it has lots of baby fat and juicy fruit that needs to soften. Very vivid right after opening, red fruit dominant the nose. Concentrated but not heavy with pretty high and pronounced acidity. A little bit of wood, vanilla with some orange peel and blackcurrant. With great “sweet” and long finish.
開瓶時非常豐沛的莓果味,酒體紮實,酸度又濃又高。淡淡檀木、薄荷、帶點橘皮、黑莓為主調,尾韻回出漂亮的甘甜,迴盪。

Had it in some fine company - the 2001Vogue Musigny, plus 2000 Bonnes Mares Mugnier, 2004 Dujac CDLR, 2001 Echezeaux Mugneret, NV Billecart Sous Bois, Dagueneau Buisson, Raveneau Chablis Tonnerre 2005, Which made for a great night.

overall: this was from magnum. I got to this a bit later and the nose was showing extremely well. The structure on the palate was pretty big and this bottle did need some more age. Still, it was showing off some of what it can do and there was a lot of beauty in it.
