Onion skin colour; alluring bouquet after some warmth & coaxing, subtle (aka muted); oatmeal, then marked acidity providing tension; best left alone for a while. But is there enough matière? Very long. (Base 2015, disgorged 2019).

Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Always start with a champagne and in Barolo they seem to have the same idea so they make it easy. Our first choice was out but this was there and it drinks very well. All fruity and bright and a bit of complexity and heft to make it interesting. Very nice start to the meal. Worked also with my egg and cheese pairing that was sadly lacking the truffle.

Salmon colored with oxidative notes predominating the nose. On the palate sweet/tart red berries, rose hips, saline, minerals and pronounced oxidative flavors. Good depth and persistence. Somewhat austere, but pleasantly so, with high- acidity. The mousse is ever so slightly coarse, but that’s nitpicking. Overall distinctive and quite lovely.
2011 base, disgorged 2015.

Bottle purchased in 2016. Had developed notable secondary aromas, somewhat like an ageing pinot. More earthy, forest floor, than fruit. But still a very nice wine if you like those characteristics.

Nose: The nose is balanced and towards the oxidative side with red apples, strawberries, roasted nuts, spiced pears, peaches, rose petals, and mineral tones. There is excellent depth and class with a slightly nutty side that adds a savoriness.
Taste: Full bodied with refreshing and integrated high acidity. The feel shows a lot of depth and class with red apples, strawberries, roasted nuts, peaches, rose petals, and mineral tones.
Overall: This is from a 2013 base. It is as wonderful as it always is with lots of complexity and depth.

2010 base; 2014 disgorged; 3g/l. Delightful floral nose with some sherbert. Delicate stone fruit flavours on the midpalate then a clean, mineral finish. Plenty of finesse and restraint. This is a nice effort yet not hugely exciting.

2012 base. Disgorged 3/2016. Extra brut 3g/L. Light copper/rose gold with delicate bead. Nose lightly waxy red berries, mineral, hint of vanilla cream. Palate juicy tart red berries, strong acidity yet balanced by a creamy fleshy depth of body, with time an intoxicating black cherry note, some chalky and rocky mineral notes with even more time. To my taste, amazing balance, profound complexity, really really enjoyable -- one of the more enjoyable rose champagnes I've had recently. 95 pts

22 Top Flight Champagne's for E&R's 20th Anniversary (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Soft aroma, but lovely and elegant nevertheless. Soft, pretty palate entry, showing elegant fruit and nice depth. Bitter, strong finish, that lingers with you for some time. Pretty and nice, with delicious fruit and strong acid integration which counterpoints each other very well.

Very nice rose. Pleasant red fruit aromas. Fresh acidity, lively, zippy. Delicate style, but sufficient depth of fruit, and without excessive yeast/bread characters, it shines through.

2013 base wine. Yellow, bare hint of pink. Not as bubbly or as much berry fruit on the nose as the Extra Brut Rosé. Bigger, leesier, more wood than that wine. Both more creamy and more tart. Very, very good.

Yet another dinner at HaiSous (Chicago, IL): 2011 base, 3 g/L dosage. I forgot to write the disgorgement, but it's probably safe to say it's the same as my previous note. This is an underwhelming wine, to say the least, in comparison with the rest of the high-quality juice that is being produced here. The nose shows a bit tinny and thin, and the palate has pretty much the same character. There's also an odd, unidentifiable chemical taste as well in this, which is certainly distracting from the rest of the wine. Good acidity and mineral cut isn't enough here, sadly.

I believe the bottle we had over dinner tonight was NV, although the back label said it was 2012 base. I believe the disgorge date was 2016, as well. I enjoyed this. Peach colored, with a zesty red fruit, like a strawberry. The wine settled down pretty quickly in the bdx stem I was using, far less pressure than the Muzon-Leroux from a few nights ago. Overall, drank really well and seems quite approachable now.

Lot 03/2015. Very pretty orange color. Pleasantly herbal and somewhat developed on the nose with a marmalade-esque feel to its cherry-driven fruit. Oak is quite evident but not over-done. Markedly vinous and robust on the palate. Very much dominated by sour cherry but with an intriguing bitter edge. Does not seem very youthful but yet possesses absolutely great energy and lift and is impeccably balanced.

From memory. Chose this to follow Selosse's Substance. which worked well. My first experience with this wine, and I had expected a typical crisp, tightly wound but energetic grower rose. Pleasantly surprised with the well appointed nose of fresh berries and some undertones of dried roses, chalk, brioche and mild hints of sherry. Round and smooth in the mouth, with some depth and texture. Perlage nicely complementing. Medium finish. Liked this quite a bit. 91-92p

Penfolds Grange Vertical (Sixteen, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose shows off a distinct herbal element at first along with red cherries, strawberries, herbs, dandelions, and biscuits. There is good depth, but the green streak is a bit ever present.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The acidity is a bit sharp and astringent. There is a real class and roundness to the feel with red cherries, herbs, strawberries, and dandelions. The green streak is a little less here, but, it's still there.
Overall: This was from a 2011 base. The leaner quality of the vintage and the greenness comes through. It's superior wine making and a lot of care that allows this to be as drinkable as it is.

A night of Bereche (The Bristol, Chicago IL): Nose: There is an herbal tinge to the nose along with red berries, baking spices, herbs, red florals, minerals, pears, and some earthy notes. There is good depth and expression, but the green note is persistent.
Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity. The acidity is a touch astringent with the feel showing off good depth and style with red berries, baking spices, herbal notes, pears, minerals, and earth tones.

Bérèche at The Bristol (Chicago, IL): 2011 base, 3 g/L dosage, January 2013 disgorgement. This is a touch herbal for my tastes, as far as champagne goes. That's probably the only strike against it. The nose is bright, with lots of aromatic white fruit -- in fact, on the nose alone, I'd have trouble identifying this as a rose. Quite pretty, and there's an intriguing touch of green on the palate. Loads of acidity and minerality, but for me, i think this bottle could have used a touch more roundness.

Confession: I have a soft spot for Bérèche. I've tasted the Campania Remensis Rosé NV on more than one occasion, though this is the Extra Brut, with notably more focus and mineral verve than the regular Brut. What it shares, however, is joyous complexity, and a hue that is the exact color of ripe nectarines. The mousse is very fine, with creamy texture upfront and lush layers of apricot, red berries, rhubarb, candied orange peel, and allspice—all of this dissolves into chalky minerality at the close. Pairs beautifully with rare roast beef.

very dry. fine-tuned citrus meets an airy, powdery…red fruit. I don't know what fruit, but a prior note mentions pomegranate, which I could definitely agree with. A very nice wine, though not the kind of thing Chris normally seeks out, as he prefers the voluptuously biscuity caramel-y type of Champagne. Oh well, we can always open another bottle and call it a Birthday Week…

More Grower Champagne (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Light pink, very frothy. Yeast and subtle strawberry fruit. Medium weight, light, dry, very discrete wood base. Tremendous finishing acidity and minerality. This may have been my favorite wine of the flight; it was strikingly more fine, delicate and delineated than the Bara Rose which came before it.

The is the October 2012 disgorgement. Salmon color. Wispy mineral crushed red berry nose. Chalky vinous soft berry and rhubarb on the palate, finishes crisp and dry, edgy mineral finish. Two bottles, both spectacular.

Rockstar Champagne... like, all of them (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): (2009) Really lovely aromas and quite largely fruited. Very pretty. Some funky fruit on the palate, with lots of minerality, but it's nice. Some puckering minerality on the finish with a little bit of funk.

Sur les petits fruits rouges, vin d'une grande délicatesse avec une finale relativement stricte comme je les aime sur les champagne! Ce domaine ne m'a jamais déçu.

very dry. fine-tuned citrus meets an airy, powdery…red fruit.

This is focused on cut and precision, Pomegranate, orange peel, spices, chalk and freshly snipped flowers dance above the nose in this striking glorious wine. Superb! w 3 grams per liter.
