This is great - no overcooked prune like 2003 A nice balance and sappy edge. Nose has touch of eucalyptus and freshness. Palate is ready with a nice sappy finish and texture - touch of Bordeaux about it with a good fruit driven drive. Green cab franc notes in palate but good

Family Celebrations; 5/5/2023-5/12/2023 (Alicante y Madrid - España): Almost twenty years on so its time has come. Here we go. Initially I have the idea to opened it three hours in advance but by disgrace last third of cork was glued to the neck of the bottle so decanting and filtering were mandatory actions. Old bottles need The Durand. I think so. Beautiful bright, crystal clear crimson colour. Very mallorquian like. Still a obscure core followed by orangish edges. On the nose aromas of cherry coke, dried lavander, dusty forest floor, wet earth, mixed berries yogurth, smoked bacon also a fleshy character standing out. Nice complexity. Needs a little more precision IMHO. On the palate showed as a serious, dry red wine. Velvety texture, savoury but lacks terroir. Very long, balanced, austere, good acidity. Very well made bottle on the B'dx style, possibly Pauillac because Graves is far away, that side of the road. Fine grained sediments. Heat weather missed in action. Unbalanced no more. Sorry critics. In short, supposedly one of the greatest wines in this world at its best but I have confronted feelings about it. Unfortunately my taste has focused in another kind of elegance. Tasting note dedicated anyway to those considering wine has one and only local grape, mainly in Italy. I sincerely prefer the austerity of a good Château Latour. Quite sure you were expecting for something different.

A delicious Sassicaia.Magnum was opened 5 hours before being poured, and started singing in the glass after 5/10 minutes. An absloute charmer, which seems to be in its peak of maturity (where it will remain for long I suspect). It is rich, dense, long, with a very elegant texture, a lovely acidity that brings the backbone and the freshness, it has very elegant aromas of red berries. Refined tanins, impeccably integrated. Modern in style, in the best possible way. A stunner.

late-night shenanigans (portland, OR): Nose: This has been opened for several hours before I got to it and it certainly helped. There is a darker edge to the tones of dark red cherries, tobacco leaf, black raspberries, licorice, black currants, cedar notes, and some spice box. While there is a richness to the fruit, it is all in balance right now.
Taste: The feel is Full bodied with medium acidity and resolving, medium+ tannins. The structure feels like it’s fully in the mature stage as the tannins are still there, but they aren’t the main event. There is a density and richness to the feel with dark red cherries, black raspberries, black currants, tobacco leaf, cedar notes, and some spice box.
Overall: This is mature and ready to go. The darker edge of the vintage certainly shows up, but it isn’t overdone and more adds a degree of mystery. This is in no danger of falling off any time soon, so one can hold or drink to their pleasure.

Schokolade, Beerenfrucht, Trockenobst, erdigen uns mineralische Anklänge, etwas Menthol; am Gaumen mittlerer Körper, leicht zehrende fein- bis mittelkörnige Tannine, komplexer, langer Abgang; gut zu trinken. Nicht mehr zu lange lagern.

Very Bordeaux-like nose. The nose is wonderfully expressive, with ripe black fruit, dried roses, tobacco, leather and some cedar. The palate is dry and its components are very balanced.Medium-bodied,with a velvety mouthfeel and a smooth medium long finish. This wine is really more Pauillac than Tuscany. In many ways it's quite lovely, but it lacks the ultimate complexity and"wow"factor.

Deep, rich ox blood in color Figs, molasses, dark fruit, leather, hint of oak and all spice Thick, viscous, unctuous. Delicious long finish. Lots of life left but in its window for sure. Sassicaia is so damn good. Happy New Year!
Nose is punchy black fruit but also has the earthy rusticity of a St. Estephe and pleasant Italian spice, oregano, pine, tar, etc., and even a pronounced truffle note. Surprisingly not completely roasted, given the vintage, and quite a pleasant surprise to the upside overall. (I'm not keen on Super Tuscan stylistically. Palate is resolving nicely, secondary black fruit, relaxing tannin, better than expected.

Pop and pour from a 375. In the glass, auburn at the rim, dark purple-tinted red at the core. On the nose, leading with dark red fruit, plums, and currants, with a touch of cedar in the background. On the palate, cassis, more plums, and a slight note of oxidation, but that was more seasoning than a sign of trouble. I'd guess out of 750, things would be just fine.

Sassicaia Vertical 2003-2015: All wines tasted blind alongside the matching vintage of Chateau Margaux (see separate tasting story). All Sassicaias show a soft structure and femininity I would rather associate with a right bank Merlot than with a left bank Cab, also the fruit profile was more red fruit driven, than dark fruit. All in all and especially compared to the Margauxs (average score 94.8) drunk alongside, the wines showed good although without exceptionalism (average score Sassicaia 92.1). It has not the stuffing, the complexity to play in the big league and the soft structure alone is not interesting enough. The tasting confirmed the impression I had before (6 vintages tasted before, only once (2001) scored 95 points or higher). Highest score (94 points) for the 2004, 2009 and 2013 with more upside for the 2013 in the future. The much lauded 2015 was rather disappointing (92 points) but probably just would have needed several hours in the decanter.
TN: Rather muted nose with some minty notes at the center along some red fruit. It showed a bit mature on the palate with leather and barnyard aromas. Not overly complex or precise. Fine structure and good harmony but overall quite uninspiring.

Margaux vs Sassicaia double vertical: Sassicaia vs Margaux face-off hosted by a private collector. I was surprised by the unambiguousness of the result in this 13- year (2003-2015) double vertical. Margaux beats Sassicaia 10x with Sassicaia on top only 3x. Of the 26 wines tasted, the top 6 (all scored 95 and higher) were all Margaux with 2009, 2010 and 2015 all somewhere between regal and galactic. In sum, the average score for Margaux was 94.4 (range 92-98) as compared to a Sassicaia average of 93.1 (range 92-94). See tasting story for a few more high level remarks.
This had a slightly chemical touch to it (not in a bad way) on top of nutty and aging notes, also thought there was just a tad of brett. Underneath red fruit, maybe also a whiff of mint. Palate was quite heavy with coarse-grained tannins and wanting precision. Bottle variation could be at play here, but I’m struggling to see a bright future here - but I did enjoy the nose.
Beautiful and hitting on all cylinders tonight. popped and let sit for about an hour, no decant. Lovely, just showing some secondary notes but still had fruit and freshness. Long finish. Paired well with all the fresh pasta, lasagna and lamb. Sadly it didn't last long.

My 500th post: MD’s Birthday Wine Dinner @ ZYX: MD’s Sassicaia vertical of 1995, 1999, 2003, 2004 plus my 2001 (what a coincidence) - ranking from top: 2003, 1995, 2001, 2004, 1999. Black fruits, black cherries, violets, eucalyptus, tobacco, black truffles, black olives, dried rosemary. Enticing and rounded mint leaf finish - the dark menthol mouthfeel was unforgettable. Opulent, hedonistic and downright sexy. I said “wow” a couple of times tonight just enjoying this slowly. Definitely my WOTN. Very impressive, and neck and neck with the Unico 1998 recently tasted. Open now!

Been in my personal cellar for over 11 years, decanted for one hour with moderate but corse sediment. Last tasted four years ago, the nose is certainly less flowery and more mineral driven, the palate is full of dark cherry, cassis, plum, tea and a nice dose of cinnamon/clove note, the finish is long smooth and tart. This bottle is certainly ready to drink and I doubt further aging would improve this particular bottle but I am certain this particular bottle would hold for a decade or more. If this bottle is indicative of other well stored bottles why wait?

3 Decades of Sassicaia Masterclass with Priscilla Incisa della Rochetta (Decanter FWE, The Landmark hotel, London): From Magnum.Better than 2 years ago ( Papies 90) but still a clear notch below the rest on this flight. Dark in color, very young on the color side. For the vintage a solid wine, good rich feel but not overdone in any way. Definitely riper than the normal but in no way sweet or heavy and not one dimensional as we would have expected. Its only the finish that spoils it and leaves behind a sort of 2003 burnt fruit feel. Young wine still. 92

One of the highest quality Italy can offer at present time. Dark ruby with brick endings, it looks as powerful and as majestic straight from the beginning. After several years of aging in bottle, the flavors are able to express at heir best: from a start of black cherry we go to licorice, passing through wet leaves, tobacco, and finishing with a slight hint of cedar wood. Palate is deep, powerful, yet perfectly round, with silky tannins creating a perfect harmony of sensation. An incredible product

Just starting to near maturity. Would have benefited from a decant. Warm nose of berries, spice, nutmeg and licorice. A touch green, meaning herbaceous, alongside spice, leather and mocha. Swweet tannins. Very special.

In a great spot right now. Early maturity but will hold for a long time. Great purity of fruit. This beat out a 2001 Cos d'Estournel by just a hair. Drank like a left bank Bdx but with a bit more spice and a little less minerality. Very good wine. Perfect balance of fruit and tertiary notes.

Took some time to open up so I suspect this has some time left in your cellar. Started out a little tannic and gritty but opened up nicely with time. Nice fruit and decent complexity. Finish was decent.
QPR was wanting.

I opened a magnum of this last night with some trepidation - it's rare, in my cellar at least, to see a wine that polarises opinions as this one does. Other notes seem to score it either 85 or 95. This was drunk alongside 03 Pichon Comtesse and 03 Cos D'Estournel. After 3 hours in the decanter, it showed slightly better than the Pichon and not quite as well as the Cos. I was pleased - it's got plenty of structure and great length and still has time ahead of it, at least in magnum. Don't be afraid to drink it if you have it though.

Wanted to like this wine more than our original impression.
We didn't. At the price mark , even given that '03 was such a trying vintage, we conclude again that this Sassicaia is very ordinary. It is angular , edgy and really quite unbalanced.
Still, we are sure some die-hards will see the good side of the wine , but as neutrals we would not contemplate buying , and perhaps not even drinking, another bottle. Ordinary, ordinary , ordinary.

Drank at Ginsberg+Chan Super Tuscan Wine Tasting. Lineup 2003 Sassicaia, 2003 Solaia, 2009 Tignanello, 2004 Le Macchiole Messorio, 1995 Castello di Ama Vigneto La Casuccia, 1994 Ornellaia, 2005 Masseto and 2005 Tua Rita Redigaffi.
Dark, red/brown. Aromas of herbs, dark black fruits and Western spices. Intense. Only 1+ hours breathing in bottle and ready to rock. We wondered if additional breathing would benefit, but no chance...the wine seems to have evaporated from our glass ;-). Medium tannins, smooth, silky and round. Very soft finish. Dry as a baby's bottom. Sipping beautifully now and much more attractively priced than its competitors. Arguably, the wine of the night. We, of course, are biased Sassicaia fans, but...this is excellent given 2003 was supposed to be a "bad" vintage.

Beautiful mature classic super Tuscan. High fruit concentration, velvety soft tannins. Massive nose with black currant, grass, wet leaves, cedar, cigarr box and wood. Round and silky texture, long finish. Has entered a more mature state in development, more red berries a year ago. 93p.

Young young and while very approachable with a good balance between fruit and alcohol, it was stubbornly generis in its profile, would be curious to try in 5 years again to see if it develops more richness and complexity. Or was it just too cold....
Perhaps the victim of some slight bottle variation, but I doubt it. HowardNZ's note works for me (and so does Wim de Leeuw's, please consider both), but I walked away (after having spent several hours with this) from it less enthusiastically than his note suggests. A good effort for the vintage, I suppose, but a pretty forgettable wine at the end of the day. Missing an element of soul, something I thought I saw when I tasted this ~ 3-4 years ago. Drink now.
Aerated to decanter 90 minutes, served non-blind.

Double decanted for 2 hours. Not sure if its youth or the 2003 effect but definitely the wine sees a bit muted and lacks that charm and complexity of other vintages. Has the elegance and has no burnt or overripe notes and feels like the they toned extraction and oak down for this vintage to help given it was 2003. Good wine but subpar for a Sassicaia. 90

Algemeen / potentieel: Goede wijnmakers maken mooie wijnen. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 9 + Smaak / Afdronk: 15 + Algemeen / potentieel: 7 = 86/100

On first impression, the tannins seem matured beautifully. Clear concentration and structure. The finish shows the phenolic immaturity: Sas '03 is hard and angular in the finish. General / potential: Good winemakers make good wines. Extremely good winemakers make wines that are distinctive, especially in poor vintages. A very nice wine to have with a rib roast- however, there are many others that would better match than this. Nebbiolo, Brunello, Syrah even. Now, there was nothing wrong with the wine- but there also was nothing mysterious, memorable or unpredictable. It felt too manipulated and anonymous. Just saying'....

This Italian legend failed to deliver. It was ordinary in the most ordinary sense. It wasn't subtle , it was diffuse like a diluted version of its former self. We had high apple pie in the sky type hopes for this wine but it never even came close.
Burnt tar, some coffee and liquorice on the nose pacified our immediate concerns but this alone could never make up for the sheer ordinariness of the taste. Tasted blind it would have been quite overlooked if you allow the oxymoron. One of our group is a real Italophile, always banging on about the variety, style and value of current Italian production ; this wine has set his conversion of the masses back a few months I fear.
That 2003 was a tough year to make good wine in Tuscany may be offered as an explanation....

Chambolles and others at Mike and Cathy's: Served blind by Barbara, on bouquet alone, this wine was a change of speed. A Cabernet nose of cedar, cigar box, liquorice, crème de cassis and dark cherries. A lovely wine, with good shape, on palate. Quite modern in style, very well balanced and elegant. Again, no suggestion of 2003 overripeness or lack of acidity. Quite a sleek wine with well integrated, smooth tannins. Good power, structure and length. Something in the flavour profile seemed to mark the wine out as not Bordeaux, even in a modern style. An excellent wine. Drinking well now but years ahead of it.

Nose wasn't as opulent as some of the other young Tuscans, but this one was showing some nice liqourice. Sweet fruit and dusty tannin on the palate. This is nice but needs a lot of time.
Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia vertical 1998 - 2010: Medium ruby. Noticeably ripe nose of plum, cedar and leather. On the palate medium bodied with lots of fruit but no heat of the vintage, soft tannins, not drying. This lacks a bit of structure and aromatic depth but is very well done for this challenging vintage. Drink now.

Medium to dark red; lovely full nose of red berries; nice full smooth attack, soft but pronounced tannins, lacking some definition and structure, quite dry finish; nice, but lacking that extra edge
Decant 3hrs, huge flowery nose, wild dark berries, menthol, black cherry and cinnamon/clove. Been in my 53 degree cellar for nearly 7 years, according to CT. Fully integrated tannins, rich, yet balanced, with currants, cassis, dark wild berries, suggesting and delivering plenty of spice. This bottle is complex and better put, absolutely delicious. WOW!

From my cellar which is dark, relative humidity 58% and temps range from 10 degrees celsius in winter to 18 in summer, this wine is entering the window of worthiness. It certainly could sit longer but with a few hours decanting and the right meal this is a treat. The nose is beautiful and after 4 hours is worth just smelling! Now that said, the tanins were still present and acid present so had that thinner Tuscan finish that a typical bordeaux blend might not. I personally like the freshness but I certainly agree and understand with some that it gets a little 'watery' on the end. The nose after 3 hours was awesome. Blackberry, Cigar, Cedar. I would not say this is the most balance vintage but I got a good sense of the Italian soil/ terroir and the tuscan expression of merlot. So indicative of the region, a balanced classic and you can count on it transporting you straight to the old world. Lovely, but expensive, but that is expected.
Bring your best you paid under $100- double blind (Norcross, GA): Deep dense cloudy core with bricking; leather, nut, red currant, deep, rich, coffee; soft texture, fat and rich, noticeable tannin, leather, green pepper, roasted and ripe fruit; the density made this wine special; called Super Tuscan.

92-93. Like it not love it! The nose is incredible and perfumed. Mid palate quite strong and deep but the finish was a bit watery and lacking, especially as the night wore on. Decanted. Pretty wine, but I didn;t find it to be a powerhouse. Something was missing, probably the finish, esp when you get that gorgeous nose. Perhaps not the best vintage. Steep price tag for the wine, but fun to drink a Sassicaia ;-)

Occasional dinner group; Bordeaux 2003 plus some extras.: Lush and creamy bouquet with dark forest fruits. On the palate creamy dark berries, some bell pepper, firm acidity and round tannin with still a good bite and some bitterness in the finish. Excellent wine, but in this stage not extremely impressive. Maybe around 2016 or 2017+? 92+ for tonight.

Slow-ox'ed for a few hours then savored with friends over the next 36. Less dense in appearance than usual, uniform with no bricking. Patience rewards you with a bouquet that exudes confidence and class! Berries, spice, vanilla, nutmeg, licorice, a bit of welcome barnyard funk to boot. The wine refuses to overpower, instead luring you in deeper and deeper until you submit -- happily -- to its balanced and deep power and elegance. Notes of spice, leather and mocha linger impossibly long while you savor the integrated oak and sweet tannins through to a tremendous finish. What a treat.

Deep purple. On the nose rich blackcurrant and bramble fruits with a sweet whiff of oak. On the palate, bright acidity, pronounced tannins, dry and angular. Lucious, unctuous black fruits, damsons and cassis. Not quite yet in harmony, all a litle disjointed but great ingrediants. None of the heat of the year shows through. A long finish. Decanted for 6 hours and re-bottled. (85% Cab Sauv, 15% Cab Franc) Very dark ruby. Leather, black olives, blackcurrent, raisins on the nose. Pronounced. Quite mouthcoating with a long mineral finish. Dry, medium acidity, high tannins, full bodied. Good, but very masculine and in your face.

WOTN at blind tasting with 15 other wines. Opened about 5 hours ahead and slow ox, which helped tremendously. By the time we drank, there was a great nose and plenty of fruit. Not the longest finish, but still pretty solid.

Nose is big and fruity with some warmth (alcohol too apparent?). The taste of fruit compote and plums was an interesting insight into what might happen over the next 5-20 years but won't try this one again for a few years. The tannins were chewy and made us think of tea bags...

Has a spectacular nose of captivating light red fruit, nicely framed by some oak. Palate shows a little tannin, fruit is tasty and showing a little tartness. Not dense - rather showing some lightness in style; overall, very beautiful and seductive. 94+

This was great, and quite amazing but I have to admit to being tainted by an outstanding 01' Castelgiocondo BdM we had alongside that was better (at this stage) and less than a 3rd of the price, that said it was definitely awesome - Black, well concentrated with a nose of extreme plum, black cherry, graphite, mocha spice and vanilla, amazing structure and complexity at this stage, very well balanced and integrated, silky smooth on the palate with terrific length, outstanding (93 Points).

Double decanted for 2 hours. Initially a bit thin and quite mute in nose. After a further hour, the wine turned out to very floral and perfume. Extremely pure, elegant and balanced. Lots of fine tannins. Long aftertaste and really nice.

nose of mint, concentrated sweet fruit, toffee, smoke...the Cabernet was very evident. Sweet and tannic on the palate, but curiously the wine was tannic on mid-palate with a short and acidic finish. The alcohol was very obvious, and remained so with a fresh pour. The sweet nose got better with the second pour. Decanted for 3 hours prior to serving.

Decanted and let to breathe for 2 hours. Pure, consentrated, layered and completely unresistable with a nose of black currants, toasted oak, pencil shavings and floral elements. In the mouth so smooth, big and espressive yet so balanced and finely grained with a lasting finish that just goes on. Eventhough it drinks wonderfully good now this wine will surely develop even more complexity and weight with some more cellaring.

A powerful, beautiful bouquet explodes from this wine upon uncorking. Decanted two hours before enjoying with a wonderful cioppino. The wine has notes of blackberry, currants, plum. A hint of earthiness, but not overpowering at all. Extremely balanced and extremely good. Although youthful, the wine exhibited a maturity in its tannins that defied its age. It was soft, supple, not wound up as one might expect. We had three different Italian wines during this dinner, including a 97 barolo, but this was the wine of the evening.

Half bottle off the list of The Square in London. Intoxicating nose of ripe dark fruit, earth and smoky notes. A nose that you just wanted to take your time with and enjoy. Slightly backwards on the palate, but great elegance balanced with power and structure. I would give it a couple more years in the cellar to peak, but very enjoyable now.

Giacomo Tachis: Racconta (AIS, Parco dei Principi, Rome): Ruby, opaque. On nose, warm and sultry, with dark fruits, rich earthiness and soft minerality. On palate, earth, roses, wood and red fruits; high level of firm/ripe tannins; moderate acidity and alcohol. Medium body but nicely concentrated; great complexity and length. Best at first opening (no need to oxygenate). 95

nice medium dark red that is typical of Italian reds. Nose: nice amount of licorice, black cherry, cassis, and earth notes. Very very good nose. Taste: some serious cherry on the taste and good firm tannins. Drinks very smooth as would be expected from such a top wine. Not earth shattering, but this is a superb wine that is a pleasure to drink

Spicy and complex nose with clove, pepper, rum balls, chocolate and toast over currant fruit. Full-bodied with chewy tannins; long, smoky/toasty finish. Needs time.

Thick cherry red colour, dense all the way to the rim. Nose was muted at first but opens to a glorious bouquet of ripe cassis, cherries, mingled with an trace of spice. The wine is still unevolved on the nose, but hugely concentrated. In the palate, highly tannic but thick with heavy ripe fruits. The weight is cut by the balanced acidity which leaves a long and pleasant aftertaste. Should imagine this will be rather long-lived: drink from 2011

Dark ruby in color with a wide red/brick rim.
Pretty nose of currants, plums, cooked cherries, oak, vanilla, licorice, herbs, light vegetables, pencil lead, light vinaigrette, olives, peppercorn, leather, tobacco leaf, earth and dark coffee.
Full bodied and elegant, with medium acidity.
Dry on the palate with cooked black plums, ripen cherries, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth, light vanilla and black pepper.
Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries.
This is a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Tuscany. Smooth with nice complexity and a great mouthfeel.
This 19 year old is Interesting and tasty. Not from the best vintage, but still very yummy, and at its peak right now.
Good right out of the bottle, and better after 3 hours of airtime.

Algemeen / potentieel: Goede wijnmakers maken mooie wijnen. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 9 + Smaak / Afdronk: 15 + Algemeen / potentieel: 7 = 86/100

Color: Medium ruby red with a subtle fading to orange brown Aroma / bouquet:. Closed bouquet. Pity. This bouquet will not improve. Taste / Finish: Powerful starter. Sassiciaia (from the heat wave in 2003) is therefore disappointing. 50+ Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 9 + Taste / Finish: 15 + General / potential: 7 = 86/100

So sorry to start 2016 with a disappointing tale.

Drink now.

The wine is still unevolved on the nose, but hugely concentrated. In the palate, highly tannic but thick with heavy ripe fruits. The weight is cut by the balanced acidity which leaves a long and pleasant aftertaste. Should imagine this will be rather long-lived: drink from 2011
