Mini Egon Kabinett vertical at Eat Fine (Chicago, IL): From half-bottle. A bit of a disappointment given the vintage. Perhaps the form-factor had a bit to do with it? Relatively mute on the nose, and a palate that shows quiet and subdued, with the acidity and electricity of the vintage, but alas not much else. Light and zippy, but not showing development yet either.

Helles Gelb. Langer, feinfruchtiger Abgang. Jeder Schluck macht Lust auf den nächsten. Ein schillernder Wein, ab sofort bis 2040+ geniessen.

Drinking beautifully, better than the 16. This was medium gold in the glass, nose of faint petrol, tropical fruit and baked apple. More golden apple on the palate with excellent buffering acidity, a dollar of residual sugar and a funky, leesy finish. And while sure, it can live for longer, I’d surmise this is nearing the peak of its arc.

Dinner at D Cuisine (Chicago, IL): #03-13, 9% abv. I think my palate just keeps turning more and more towards a moderately sweet style as opposed to a straight up Auslese. This really hits the spot today -- it's certainly only modestly sweet, but there is so much slatey mineral content on the palate that this wine has a texture that's reminiscent of tannins. Very light, with fruit that is dialing back the white hot 2012 acidity now, this is far more sedate than what I would have imagined it to be on release. Nevertheless, scintillating and exciting to drink (as with most Egon wines, really...).

Served blind alongside Peter Lauer 2012 Stirn, semi blind to me. Lighter in color and in texture, but denser aromatically and also more detailed. Wispy and elegant and also pungently intense, with guava amidst the stone fruit. The side by side was interesting, amplifying the delicacy and power of this wine.

Aperitif. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Tasted blind. Electric. Love it. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Thin legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of saline wet stones minerality, white florals, touch of petroleum, delicate fruits. Developing. On the palate, off-dry, low alcohol (9%), medium- body. Delicate medium intensity, with flavours of green apples, sweet Nashi pears, saline wet stones minerality, sweet floral juice, touch of petroleum. Guava with more air. Long finish with electric high acid feels. Very good quality. Excellent delicate Riesling that led me straight to Mosel. Still years of life ahead.

Tropisk frukt på duft, våt skifer, mineraler, blomster. Syre/sødmebalanse mer mot syra enn 2011. Fin mineralitet i munnen. Sitter lenger. Vår favoritt, og mye å lagre på.

2012 Egon Muller Kabinett. I’ve seen more disdain for this wine than it deserves, not the quality but the price. “So ist das Leben”. WAs for a wonderful cabinet by Egon Müller. A mixture of rich yellow stone fruit, some exotic fruit (mango) and smelly minerality, a very delicate hint of petrol and ripe citrus fruits. On the palate a super nice acid-sweet play; nice acidity, which gives the wine a good freshness. All in all pure and very long.

Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): #03-13, 9% abv. Very dry for a Kabinett -- this is almost sitting at the feinherb level. What is particularly compelling here for me is the brilliant minerality -- it's here in absolutely spades, coupled with a slight green herbal element. Plenty of acidity, and the fruit tastes on the white side of the spectrum (which is pretty typical of 2012). While I absolutely enjoyed this, for the money, the Spätlese is my sweet spot (no pun intended).
Light yellow with green tinge. Herbs and lime on the nose. Just off dry, perhaps a tad fuller than the usual Mosel Kabinett, very good if not the most bristling acidity. Flavors of citrus, apple jelly, and a thread of slate from start to finish. For me, its purity and clarity are just joy in a bottle even if it is still in its early days and awaiting secondary development. Should do very well for a long time, surely for a far greater time than it took for us to drain most of this delicious bottle.
The next day, the dregs were just as fresh and added some guava flavors to the mix.
Blind. Obviously a Mosel kabinett. Some grass, hint of spice, light on its feet -- but not 'airy', thus excluded Müller. At hindsight, possibly the vintage made somewhat heavier than usual.

Soft and peachy to begin with. Getting rubber notes. For now they suit the wine well, but for me this marks the peak of it's drinking window. Lots of fruit still, peaches and nectarines with pine apples and a hint of lime, but with rather soft acidity.

From 375ml. AP: 03 13. Beautiful nose, floral and clean. Good mouthful but not very long finish. Citrus and honey, no petrol. Mouth watering acidity hiding the sweetness, lively. No hint of alcohol despite ABV 9%, higher than most Kabinett encountered. Sweetness 2/4.

Enjoyed this at Lotus of Siam and it was a phenomenal pairing to their great food. This is arguably my favourite kabinett from the Mosel in 2012. The hype from this producer is a lot to live up to - and it really didn't let me down. It was a really good wine, but I couldn't help but compare it to wines that are half the price and provide 90% of the enjoyment. With that said, I wouldn't hesitate to order another bottle of this wine if given the chance. Definitely a must-try wine to see what all the fuss is about. There is so much precision in this wine. It is so focussed and really delivers in all aspects.

Rieslingfeier 2015 Seminar: "What is a Kabinett?' (The Modern (Manhattan, NYC)): Very musky on the nose with melon, herbs, flowers, that smell that goes with Dimetapp cough syrup, marzipan - kind of creamy/herbal/chemical in a particular way. This somewhat evolved into a more lemony and minerally nose but there were still aspects of that original. Better on the palate - very lemony and lively, flinty, lime. Potent but doesn't seem integrated. Some nice creamy peach and marzipan notes. The lemon and stone finish seems to fall off a bit. The 12 Muller Spatlese it at least a few notches above this. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 4.5-5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15-16/20.

Leo's Blind Tasting Group - June '14 edition (Riverpark, NYC): Much better than the last bottle I had. The cut on here is remarkable. Fresh herb and mint tinged citrus, pear and gooseberry fruit with a base of slate and stone, on an incredibly light and precise frame with powerful acidity and just a faint sense of sweetness, finishing very long. Fantastic.

What a nice Kabinett with currently quite obvious sweetness of white peach and mango. Nicely filigreed acidity of lime, lemon zest, wet stone. This is really to die for but I suspect this will be even more complex when the sugar moves into the background over the coming year.

Flott vin!

OK, so I have this notion that Egon Muller need all of this time, that they are only great with age. Boy howdy, am I wrong. This might be the most complex, and at the same time, approachable Kabinett that I have ever tested. This is the quintessential "power without weight" Kabinett as well. It has qualities/perceptions of limestone and slate, desiccated fruit skins, silica glass, pungent lime, tangerine and grapefruit, flowers, earth, and a quality like bitters, or sweet bitters, that send this to the moon. This is delicious today, and will surely last for ages. Jeez I only have two left... I must find more.

Rieslingfeier Riesling Crawl (New York City, NY): #03-13. Quite monolithic and mineral, with a lot of extract. Not too sweet, with some grapefruit characteristics showing up. This is definitely a bigger Kabinett, but is it worth 2-3x the price of most others? Not really...

Rieslingfeier Riesling Crawl (New York, NY): Sweet but not too sweet, with aromas and flavors of candied lemon and orange. This is a fairly subtle, light-touch wine. I suspect I didn't give it enough attention, because my notes say, "Doesn't stand out in a sea of Rieslings." Still, there's nice pear/peach/apple fruit, ample acidity (although nowhere as nervy as in Peter Lauer's Rieslings), and an intriguing minerality that I couldn't quite pin down. AP #3. Rated 0 on a scale of -1 to 3.

Fantastic Kabinett; understated, light, and very refreshing with gentle pear, green apple and gooseberry flavours over a stony mineral base. There's plenty of acidity beneath that keeps it very precise and focused, great purity to the flavours and each glass disappears all too quickly.

(ChirongsBday.Brunner) 9% tall sweet nose, hint lime flowers, white florals, talcum powder. Tall acidity, tautly balanced tension, white apples, peachy jasmine, pineapple.

Rieslingfeier (New York): I found this fairly boring and one-dimensional. Rich lime and chalk. Others were making quite the fuss. I don't get it.
