Tonight w/ Nita's steaks. Said to be a merlot dominated blend of 85% Merlot, 10% CS, 5% CF. 50% new oak. Decanted for 2 hrs prior to dinner. Served in low low 60s in Riedel BDX glasses. Semi opaque ruby garnet. Classically styled w/a striking cigar ash & cedar nose that carries over to the palate. Lifted & balanced red fruit, mineral, herbs & expresso also in play. A perfectly resolved elegant glass of Right bank BDX! I'm more a Burg guy but love this paring w/ Nitas cast iron seared filets! 2001s can be fun! 13.5% alc.

The wine was superb. Managed to destroy the cork however after short filtering, the wine blossomed to its full extent. med ruby with tawny brim, savoury nose with dark fruit, leather, tobacco and slight tertiary aromas of caramel and walnuts. incredible tannins and smoothness. poetry in the glass.

Deep colour, beautiful savoury nose and a touch of leather, the palate has dark ripe berry fruit and still plenty of structure from classic tannins that give the palate a lovely shape. Fruit builds and builds as the evening goes on, dry style of tannin will always be there but this is partly why it is so refreshing and well balanced. A wonderful classic Pomerol that is currently delicious and one that I suspect will continue to age gracefully for a further 10+ years.

Another only okay showing for this wine that I had high hopes for. Is it fully matured? It appears very dry and seems to be losing the fruit component, with concentration appearing to recede. Still lovely.

Drinking superbly, it is my favourite Gazin vintage and it kicks a lot of more prestige right bank estates into touch. Taste profile is as per previous notes. Do give it an hour or two in the decanter to come alive.

Delicious. Dark with lots of mineral, iron, blood. Also bright herbal...eucalyptus, menthol. Really solid fruit, very compact, muscular. This is in a great place right now and should be drinking well for a while longer. Plateau now - 2028 easy. Really good stuff.

Wonderful Wine, cleraly in the drinking window - maybe even early drinking window. Pure lush fruit with sweet plum and and a hint of mocca. This bottle was much better the bottle I had 3 years ago. 93-94.

This has finally reached its peak of maturity with secondary and early tertiary notes evident. Needing only a short time in the decanter it is a wonderful rich and ripe mature Pomerol bursting with opulent fruit, highly perfumed, and with an excellent depth on the palate and finish. I would advise to be drinking this over the next few years because as the fruit is gradually fading it is starting to expose some tannic bitterness. There is only a glimmer of it on the finish but it is lurking, and without it I would rate the wine a point higher.

Between a 92-93. This is dark and brooding but fully mature and drinking nicely.
Dark reddish black color, nose is very Smokey, black fruited, cigar box and burnt leather. On the palate, some dark plum and a rich deep tobacco / earth / leather flavor. There is a bit of red fruit in the finish. Acidity is moderate but you can feel the tension fading a bit here as the wine matures. Tannins still present but mostly resolved.
This is not super complex but very nice and in a good spot. I do think it’s reaching the end of its plateau, but can be found at auction for a good value.

Fully mature and the best year from the estate drinking, it holds its own against more prestigious right bankers from the vintage. Needing minimal aeration it is rich on the nose and palate with a silky mouthfeel. Ripe red fruit and cedar are prominent with vanilla hints. The tannin is sweet but retains bite and everything is well balanced. Likewise the finish is harmonious and pushing 30 seconds. I do concur that this probably needs to drunk over the next few years before the fruit starts to recede.

Lush, plush, ripe, sweet, fleshy black plums, truffle, cocoa, licorice, flowers, and wet earth kick this into high gear. The wine is rich, silky, and soft, with a gorgeous array of dark pit fruits dusted with chocolate in the finish. At 20, this is really showing well.

Fully mature, this probably needs to be consumed over the next 3 years or so to enjoy it at its best before the fruit fades. It is very typically right bank with the merlot in the driving seat. The nose is wonderful and packed full of ripe berry fruits and plum with smokey aromas, and is its best feature. The palate has a steeliness, but the tannin is well balanced with the fruit and there is a decent depth. The finish is lengthy and deep, but the fruit loses the battle with the tannin for the last 30 seconds and it becomes unpleasantly acrid. This really only needs a short time in the decanter or even be popped and poured.

Fully mature, but drinking beautifully, at or slightly past peak. Dark, dull ruby with garnet edges indicating some age. Short decant to allow sediment to settle; some sediment in the bottle neck. Pronounced aromatics show tertiary characteristics of smoky red berry, dried red currant, powdered cocoa, old pipe tobacco, old leather shoes and dried forest floor. I’m guessing this is predominantly Merlot. Palate reinforces the aromatic profile. Tannin and acidity are still in play in the background but may outlast the fruits. Medium plus finish. Shows very good balance, excellent length, dissolving intensity, and broad complexity. This should drink well for another 1-3 years, but the longer you wait, the fruits will most likely fade. Drink now.

Final bottle from a three-bottle lot purchased in 2012. Pristine - level into neck, perfect cork. Not decanted, opened three hours in advance. Mature but lively appearance, sombre red core, narrow and intense mahogany rim; rich aromas on the nose, very Pomerol, truffle and earth and cherries, luxurious and with good depth; the palate is relatively light, not big or weighty, but elegant, fresh and transparent rather; the finish is on the dry side, with notes of cold tea. This is now fully mature, losing the richness of expression quite quickly after some time in the glass. Drink up. It probably peaked between 2012 and 2017.

Not quite the best bottle I've had of this, but it is still an excellent wine and certainly the best example of the estate drinking at present. Also I note with interest that its price has escalated recently. The nose is fabulous and everything you could want from from a top notch mature Pomerol. In fairness i think I over aerated the wine which left it lacking fruit on the palate. However, everything is in perfect balance with good depth in the mouth and on the finish. I will only give this 30 minutes in the decanter the next time out.

Silky aged Pomerol drinking perfectly for us....looked quite evolved when 1st test pour upon opening (with some tawny hints at the rim, garnet otherwise) but nose was singing after 5 minutes in the glass and just as good in the mouth. It held up through 3 hours we drank it.
This beauty is drinking beautifully with all the nuance you'd expect in a well-aged Pomerol. It's not a big wine and should be drunk soon. The berries and cigar box flavors came through. Opened just an hour before drinking but did not decant.

This is a glorious wine now drinking at its peak. I had suffered from a couple of cooked bottles, which had made me start to think that it was in decline. However, it is firing with all guns, but that said, I will look to consume mine over the next 5 years. The nose is wonderfully opulent with red cherry and plum, and cedar notes now becoming apparent. Similarly hints of vanilla and violet appear on the palate. It is everything you would want from a decadent Pomerol, with great depth and rich complexity, and a robust tannin which has sweetened and is silky to the taste. The finish is decent, but it is on the shorter side, and the only barrier to a higher rating.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #147; Pomerol (By AH): Beautiful and luxurious bouquet with dark berries and rustic flavors, cedar and earth. On the palate vanilla, red berries, good acidity, oak, some bell pepper and still some sticky tannin. Still youthful impressions although the wine is mature as well. Will drink lovely over the next 4+ years. 94 - 95

Bring a Good Bottle at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Part of a flight of '00 Cantemerle and '98 Smith Haut Lafitte. Dark and dense, bandaid, gravel, mineral, firm tannis, full bodied with aggressive wood still, dark chocolate.

Tasted regularly over the last few years, this is probably now drinking at its absolute optimum, and is a wonderfully opulent Pomerol. I had some previous reservations that this had started its decline, but I assume it was a rogue bottle as this has the structure to stay at this level for the next 5 years or so. It is deeply perfumed on the nose full of cherry and plum, and you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a wine a decade older. The palate is deceptively robust, but with the fruit still prominent; it is has a satisfying tannic bite. Balance and depth are excellent and it displays secondary and early tertiary characteristics. The only barrier to a higher rating is the finish which is is satisfying, but on the shorter side and a little unbalanced towards the end.

I would say that this light footed beauty is at the peak of its elegant stage. Lots of tug and pull from this feisty 2001 that is just glistening with power and beauty at the same time. Loads of cedar, earth, plums, dried flowers and plenty of tug and pull from this elegant wine. Has a good 3 years longer at this stage and a good life in a new direction after that...Drink or Hold

This is always consistent, and has been very approachable for the last 5 years. It is a wonderfully opulent Pomerol with deep aromas of red cherry and plum. The fruit is very forward on the palate, but is balanced perfectly with robust tannin. The depth is excellent, and you could be forgiven for mistaking the wine as 20 years older. The finish is now well balanced and touching 30 seconds. This still needs a few hours in the decanter. Given its development, I would probably want to consume this over the next 5 years. 94+

As a vintage, I feel that 2001 has on occasions been under the radar, but particularly with the right bank there are some real gems. This is one of them, and indeed at the time, RP had it near the top of his ratings for the year. It has gone through a bit of a dumb phase over the last couple of years, but now has started to peak. It has fully entered its drinking window and the nose has a wonderful mature nose of red cherry and plum. On the palate the tannin has still not fully resolved but the balance and depth are excellent. The finish at this stage is still a little off kilter but it is a wonderfully opulent Pomerol which is going to keep improving. Decanting is recommended.

(Single-blind tasting) Medium-fullish nose. Lovely herbaceousness. Subtle dark fruit. Some roots. Gently, cedary oaky. Pepper. Medium-fullish, balanced and developed taste. Fully ready. Dark fruit, green pepper, cigar, and hinst of smoke. Slightly more tannic than fruity. But long and satisfying. Correctly identified as the Pomerol in the 2001 tasting. Quite Cabernet Franc-ish. Very appealing.

Really rich and nice notes of tobacco, charcoal, black fruit and black cherries. Leather and saddle. This is a big wine, deep in color and almost brooding. More age will definitely help this wine gain complexity. Good today but will be great in time.

For me, the best performing Gazin at the moment, the wine is in the early stages of its drinking window, (and indeed is a little closed compared to a year ago,). The nose is full of fruit with flavours of cherry, blackcurrent, and tobacco. The fruit is in abundance on the palate but the tannin is slightly abrasive at this stage. However, everything is in good balance and completed with a satisfying finish. The wine continued to settle in the glass over a couple of hours, and time in the decanter is recommended at this stage.

Dark crimson color. Very dense in the nose, high intensity, very ripe red and black fruit, sweet spices, beautiful oaky frame, slightly earthy and gamey, juicy fryut, very welcoming and seductive, hard to resist. The intenstity in the nose is not fading at all as the time goes by, its just releasing layers upon layers of aroma. In the palate the wine shows some kick, more earthy and gamey than the nose, med to high acidity and med tannins. Filled with red and black fruit, oaky, med body and med to high intensity, long finish. Initially, it had some fresh herb nuances but they got lost over time underneath all those fruit and oak devired flavors. Outstanding quality, I'd say at its peak but with many more years in it. Should have bought more of these

Had this about a month ago. Lovely definition to the well-balanced fruit and secondary characteristics. There is some grip and sizzle on the finish yet, so I don't think there's any rush to drink this. Very nice now, though, if you still like a bit of youthfulness. Good stuff.

Decanted 1/2 hour. Deep ruby/garnet core, pale garnet rim. Deep, plummy nose, touch of vanilla and rich earth. Medium/full bodied, plum, dark cherry, generous, touch of chocolate, quite deep on the mid-palate, balanced acidity firm but relatively fine tannin kicks in on the good length finish. Excellent, but still quite young and should improve given another 5-10 years.

RP predicted this would be a great wine. I have waited over the years and been underwhelmed. However, this has suddenly come alive. A tremendous bouquet full of ripe cherry is followed by an explosion to the palate and a finish which seems to go on forever. Yet again another great right banker from 2001

An easy afternoon with close friends. 2016-01: Pomerol and St Julien. (@ My place): Beautiful and slightly mature bouquet with some red berries, cedar, cigar box, vanilla, earth and autumn impressions; really luxurious. On the palate many layers. It started with some red berries, sweet spices, sweet licorice, some chocolate and graphite, dark berries as well, some earth, some sweetness and also good and firm acidity. The tannin is beautiful, soft and a bit powdery maybe, but also with still a good bite. Overall a beautiful and complex wine. With some more air time the wine is definitely fully mature and a great pleasure now, but it is a pity this was my only bottle. Will still be beautiful around 2019.

Drank it as a coravin experiment over about a week, then opened it up for the last two four or five ounce pours or so. Amazing nose of berries, spice, and tobacco. Needed a couple hours in a glass to really show well, but then it was superior bordeaux. Deifinitely give it at least a two-three hour decant.
Only had one bottle, so I guess for the experiment to really work I should have had two and tried to compare on a couple of days. I'm going to have to try more science when I have more bottles.

This is a beautiful wine for Gazin and the vintage. Black and blue fruits, plums, forest floor, coffee and a touch of oak. Medium to full bodied with a bit of hedonism and a fine nose. This is a thoroughly enjoyable well made wine that burst with flavor and texture, but lack the subtlety of the greats.

Ruby red in colour, tertiary flavors have already been developed with strong leather and cedar. Totally not a surprising wine. Tannin is drying out on mid palate. Might need 2-3 more years time to have everything integrated.

Just bought from a retailer in Memphis that did not have conditioned storage. Deep purple color & a little ruby, nose settled an hour after opening to plumb & red fruit. Taste is sweet cherry, mildly acidic, leathery & earthy. Long finish sort of an apple nuance. Very polished mouthfeel. This seems to be fighting bad storage but is still exceptional.

this is stil way too young, was drunk alongside some Bordeaux from 2006 and 2007, and this one seemed by far the youngest one, still very primarily with rather harsh tannins, initial score after 1 hour decant only 88++, after an extra 3 hours in the glass it showed much better and the elements come together and it softened, if you have this in your cellar, let it rest for another decade ;)

Coravined. Ruby red with slight bricking. Lovely aromas of reddish black fruits, violets, incense and hint of earth make up a very captivating nose. A medium bodied palate reveals sweet, velvet textured crushed small berries, dark chocolate, hint of licorice and a long perfumed finish.

- Garnet color with medium forming legs and aromas of violet, tobacco, coffee, chocolate and almond and has flavours of mushroom, black pepper, tobacco and dusty with a full body. Silky texture with a long finish - Decanted for two hours. Remained strong on the nose for many hours, acidity very high, ready to drink but will remain in the bottle many years still. Nice aromas. However, the tannins muted the fruit. This wine is early plateau and needs another 3-4 years to soften tannins. Second place to the 1990 L'Evangile that was showing beautifully tonight. Good match with the duck.

Getting to its sweet spot, spicy, leathery, yet fine tanins encapsulate a structured yet distinctly Pomerol drink. Only had a half bottle but it was still very fine, paired with braised beef to fight off the autumn chill. Collect more whenever it presents itself.

Monopole: Hit of the night: plum, slight raisiny (but not in the Amarone sense), wet tobacco, red currant, sous-bois; nice dark notes in the mouth, hint of tar; exceptionally balanced and structured even if supple and seductive. Buy if you can. This is a smoky, raisiny, red-fruited, but powerful and suave, quintessential Pomerol (and only “just across the street” from Petrus). This was a steal at $120.
Angela's Belated Birthday Dinner (Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Popped and poured when we had already drank 6 rather nice wines. Colour is bright, semi-opaque lambs-blood red. Nose is beautifully full-on mulberry fruit and well-integrated but powerful oak. It has an impressively Pomerol nose that punches above its weight. Palate is attractively tannic-framed and quite robust at the moment. Inky tannic on the finish. Very young. 89 but it's unfair to score really against the wines we drank preceding it. So 89 is a minimum score.

This wine was assessed in single-blind fashion at our group's Right Bank vs. New World Merlot/Cabernet Franc tasting. A blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, it shows a moderately intense nose of cassis, crushed rocks and smoke. There is a noticeable but tolerable "green" element as well. The wine is full-bodied on the palate, with acidity which flirts with being overtly tart. The tannins are ample and somewhat astringent, while the alcohol (listed as 13.5%) appropriately hides in the background. Along with black fruit flavors are mint and tar hints which carry on throughout the middle. The finish is medium-length, with grippy tannins. While I am not fond of the green element in this wine, it certainly deserves more time in the bottle before making a definitive assessment. With bottle age, the tannins should settle down and (in conjunction with some complexity to the nose and flavors) it will hopefully merit a higher score. Drink 1/16-12/25.

I must start by saying that I am partial to very old wines, and Burgundy. Yet, I enjoyed this wine, and it was a good complement to the Dalla Valle CS vertical (90, 91, 92) we had just before. This was a more powerful wine, with a very deep color and a seductive Pomerol nose. Quintessential Pomerol on the palate, too. Has another 15+ years of life.

Boerne Wine Club - Right Bank Bordeaux (Scenic Loop Cafe, San Antonio, TX): A consistent performer, as I am always impressed given the price. Plummy ripe purple nose with some dark berries and cedar. Reddish purple color. Vanilla oak and black plums, which after about 1 h in the glass gives up spcie cake black olive paste, ripe tobbacco, dark chocolate and dark plum compote. Nice balance of fruit and acidity keeps the wine interesting and fresh for another sip. Nose is far better than the palate, which was a tad too oaky for me.

This one delivers again. The nose is more or less fenomenal and in the mouth it is apparent that this is a big wine and still somewhat backward but already quite complex. Great Bourdeaux and an example of how good the 2001s really are in Pomerol. Only problem was when we opened an Echezeaux 2005 from DRC. All of a sudden the Gazin didn't shine as much. This is a major problem with the 100-point scale - Burgundy's superiority as a wine region makes it hard to compare.

From a 375 ml bottle. Reddish color with slight bricking. Ripe red and black plums, spice cake, olives and some pipe tobacco on the expressive nose. Full bodied palate, the oak has integrated very well, the nose carrries on through to the palate with sweet and spicy brambly red fruits, some leather with good acidity. IMO the split is just entering a nice plateau of drinking.

Gazin 2001 (85% Merlot, 10% CabS och 5% CabF)Has a very dark colour and PnP it's a bit green and herbal, almost shy. There is fruit, but muted. Lots of sandalwood, some tobacco and coffe. On the palate a bit more fruit, but still tight and a bit bitter. after about an hour of air we get dark plums, blackberry, chocolate and still some tobacco and coffe. Dry, with impressive presence in the mouth. Nice tannins, long finish. One could perhaps wish for fresher acidity and there is still some green notes. Feels young still.

Birthday tasting @ Roel's (Netherlands): First sniff: pine forest, mint, eucalypt, lavender, black cherry. Kretek cigarettes! Then Creme de Cassis, blackberries, anise, licorice. On the palate I pick up this complexity too, but in the end the bouquet is the most impressive part. Powerful, grainy tannines, beautifully packed and covered by black fruit juiciness. A sinewy, robust, masculine and honest wine with the best yet to come. I was very surprised that this turned out to be a Pomerol. Guessed: St. Estephe. 17.5/20

Nice deep color, but a bit muted on the nose. A little green on the palate, too. It's entirely possible this could improve with time and air, but as my only bottle I gave it neither, just an evening. I would hold, but I would not seek it out unless on sale.

This is a baby but a beauty. Given time in the glass and breathing in the bottle this wine starts to open up and deliver mocha, chocolate, and spicy notes in the nose and blue fruits and tannins on the palate. With every passing half hour this wine develops more character, intensity and appeal.

Right Bank at Mi Piaci (Mi Piaci, Dallas, Texas): This wine was the last of the night, and stood out, which typically means (for me) that there were certainly some good fruit aromas and flavors present. Incredible dark red color to this wine, which should be interesting to follow in its evolution. Still very young. 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc blend. 90-94

13.5% alc.

Deep Bulls blood opaque colour. Nose is a bucketful of damp earth, mushrooms, damp ferns, pencil lead. Palate is alluringly fruity and rich black and red currants fruit. Elegant and refined. A super expression of 2001. Light resonance and slight length.

Coravined. Ruby red with slight bricking. Lovely aromas of reddish black fruits, violets, incense and hint of earth make up a very captivating nose. A medium bodied palate reveals sweet, velvet textured crushed small berries, dark chocolate, hint of licorice and a long perfumed finish.

Dark red showing some browning. Smells of cassis and loamy earth. Delicious! Tastes like it smells. Plenty of sediment. Layered and complex and not heavy.

Silky texture with a long finish - Decanted for two hours. Remained strong on the nose for many hours, acidity very high, ready to drink but will remain in the bottle many years still. I loved it, the best wine I drink in months, very complex, the flavor varieties just kept coming.

Dark ruby red in color. Inviting aromas of dark fruits, baking spices, violets and smoky tar. A still grippy palate shows dark fruits, dark chocolate and camphor perfume with well balanced acidity keeping the wine is focus. Nice wine!

We drank in the fifth married anniversary, Giragosto restaurante, former Pandoro.
Beautiful nose, very intense and complex. Red fruit, a hint of leather, and a balanced and integrated oak. Very elegant, with layers of complex tastes. Great acidity. It still has some present tanins in the aftertaste. It will last and improve. Long finishing.

Very enjoyable, should soften and improve. 92-93.

Agradavel demais. Perfeita harmonizacao. Nao dava vontade de parar de beber. Acho que ja esta no auge.

Estephe. 17.5/20
