Grand Sichuan, Jersey City edition (Grand Sichuan, Grove St.): Leftovers from the bottle that Seth posted his 4/19 note on. It's still holding up quite nicely, though doesn't show quite the same array of aromatic depth Seth described. The red fruited flavours here are quite gentle and play a supporting role to more savoury dried floral, herbal, and faintly leathery elements. Feels fully mature and perhaps slightly on the downslope, with the structure fully integrated here, and a graceful, silky texture on a mediumweight frame.

Decanted and poured into a Riedel Bdx glass. This is fully mature and in a good place. The color is deep and dark. Nose is mostly tertiary and secondary but there is some beautiful sweet dark fruit under the surface. Hints of tobacco & green leaves along with soy and carob and a wonderful nuttiness. Old study. The fruit is black cherry along w hints of cassis. Very refined. Maybe missing just a bit in amplitude. The palate is excellent - similar to nose but sweeter and a bit fuller. Still gentle and mature - more silky and classy than assertive. The alloy of the sweet dark 82 fruit with the tobacco and carob umami is lovely. Lots of velvety sweet fruit comes out in the middle: blackberry, black cherry and just a bit of cassis. There is a bitter lean point and the end middle. The finish starts out a little mute and lean but a really nice Unami nuttiness comes out w hints of the sweet fruit. A recent purchase from Acker’s internet auction for like $75 and I’m very happy with this. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 4.5-5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16-17.5/20.

DnP. Medium red brick coloured, orange tinged, 5. Really intriguing mature bouquet, black currant, herbaceous, cedar, complex. Harmonious palate, m-T, m+A, mB, dry, perfectly balance, dark fruits, long elegant finish. Drink now but will stay here for many years to come.
Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle (full bottles split for a zoom tasting). Nose of carob and nutty - tertiary & fully mature. Coffee or mocha - bitter coffee grounds is a good way. Celery. Palate is coffee and some bitter at start But sweetens and nutty comes out. Finish is a bit boney nutty quite dry and some tobacco. I was able to get the nose as mature BDX. probably from the 80’s but could have been 70’s. Lots of guesses then but others narrowed it to Margaux. Clearly not Palmer or Ch Margaux so someone guessed RS which didn’t seem right to me so I figured it might be Prieur Lichine and was correct. I guessed 83 but in retrospect the nose really shows the quality and luscious nature of the vintage. Really excellent showing and everyone agreed. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.
Day 2: better last night but didn’t finish the scoring. Still excellent on the nose and palate.

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Quite bold after the 1980 and 1981, black over red fruit showing brambles, a little smoky and earthy underpin, toast, sweet spice, forest floor, lovely nose. Juicy medium plus intensity acidity is balanced by brambles, red berries and blackcurrants, toast, sous bois, tight talc textured tannins, long, lovely, wonderful in fact.

Bottle in perfect condition and from a cache of wines which have been generally excellent, so was expecting this to be pretty good. Nice old Bordeaux nose, but a bit tertiary for the year. Lots of coffee and mint, bit of tobacco.
Pretty thin mouthfeel, bitter finish. Weedy tannins. Overall can't say this is a great success for the vintage. The 1975 was considerably better. Avoid.

Drank along side the '83 in a mini-vertical. As everyone knows, '82 was the year that brought Bordeaux back on the world stage, but Margaux has been said to be one of the weaker regions in this otherwise excellent vintage. On the other hand, '83 often lives in its older brother's shadow, but was a sensational year in Margaux. So which prevails, vintage or commune? Compared to the '83, this '82 has a much more effusive, almost liqueur-like nose, brimming with kirsch and floral notes. Lush and a bit exotic, with completely resolved tannins, this has likely passed its apex, but is still drinking well. A bit one-dimensional compared to the '83, which was my favorite of the two.

Very high shoulder fill, excellent color, crimson-purple with some bricking at the rim. Feminine and floral Margaux nose of rose petals, red fruit and cigar box, with red currant, tart cherry and sandalwood flavors. Tannins are fully resolved but the acidity leaves a slight pucker on the finish, suggesting the fruit at harvest may have been a bit underripe. I have not had this wine in more than a decade, and although it is almost surely past its peak, it is certainly still very enjoyable now. Not as good as an '82 de Pez I had at Christmas, but still a tribute to the magic of the vintage. This bottle is numbered 145747, meaning they made at least 12,000 cases of this stuff.

Remarkably youthful. A bit musty on opening, but aromas of black currant and spice emerge in time. Perfumed nose, silky mouthfeel. Rich on palate, with quite exotic spiced black fruit. Great balance, medium length. After an hour and a half tobacco and roast coffee starts to peek through. From a pristine bottle, should last a good while longer. Margaux!

From a well-cellared bottle, this 37-year-old, medium garnet/brick wine still has a modest amount of residual red fruit, but the fruit plays second fiddle to the louder notes of tobacco, almond, earth, allspice and leather. Medium-bodied, low-to-medium in acidity, seamlessly alcoholic and with fully resolved tannins, it concludes with a medium-length, softly-textured finish. This is still enjoyable, but is definitely well beyond plateau. Drink now.

Last bottle from a case purchased on release. Garnet ruby core; thin rim. Short decant for sediment. Barnyard on opening that blew off after 15 minutes. Then floral aroma and fleeting but delicious, almost youthful, fruit. Faded rapidly after an hour, but still had something special to offer, however briefly. While this wine was better 20 years ago, I'm glad I saved one for tonight.

Well stored bottle, this is probably near the end of its window of drinkability, but I don’t have a history to say if it was better 10 years ago. Still fairly deep color with some browning, there are lots of attractive tertiary notes, like tobacco, leather, and wet leaves. The fruit provides enough sweetness and lift and the tannins have melted away. Not the type of wine that blows your mind but good aged Bordeaux

Thanks to a Durand corkscrew, was able to get the cork out in very good condition. Bottle condition overall was quite good, and wine was at a base neck fill level. Unfortunately, we were probably past the optimal drinking window on this one. Color was definitely browning, and there was barely any fruit left. Overall, while drinkable, it was pretty dried out and not providing much enjoyment. It did improve a touch with some air, but never got to the place where we wanted to finish the bottle.

Prior to retiring this bottle down the sink, I decided to see just what might be left in what critics have described as an at best average wine from a great vintage. (Note: Drinkability Report has this thru 2007 with others listed as even earlier). This has never been a favorite of Parker from an otherwise noteworthy chateau, but I have to believe that in it's prime, it was better than critics gave its due. But alas, it is over the hill and has seen the better era of bye-gone days. Now with brown edges, with a faint red color, still a hint of tannin as it clings to life support. Light, with a bit of earthy and vegetable flavor, it might be possible to pass this off to an undiscerning recipient in a silent auction looking for a last minute tax deduction. Otherwise, if you are still in possession of one of these bottles, it was last call years ago. Drink up.

A little disappointed . Bottle had been stored perfectly, given time to breathe after decant. Just lacked any wow factor. Mellow, lacked the structure of a really good 82.

No formal notes, over dinner. This was paired with an excellent bottle of 1970 Chateau Pavie and didn't stand a chance in my view. Decent nose, not particularly Margaux in character, nicely evolved notes of spices, tobacco, dark fruit. Not much tension or depth on the palate, quite drying.

Drinking very nicely and not really showing its age other than with some browning at the rim, not terribly complex, but a rock solid and delicious example of well-aged Bordeaux.

'82 Bordeaux and Friends (Rene's): (Tasted blind) This bottle tasted a bit flat. Not giving up so much on the nose or the palate; good texture and maybe a touch of green. Definitely the least interesting wine of the night.

From a half bottle with an into the neck fill. I might be a sucker for 1982 Bordeaux, so forgive me. This wine was great! Really a nice old Bordeaux with dried cherry and strawberry on the nose, old with cigar, oak, truffle, and foresty notes. The palate still had fruit but more cigar and oak.
For me, I think the wine is near the point of going down hill. The finish was a bit bitter, either because of age or because the tannins seem to be distributed in a cloud throughout the wine (there was almost no sediment). I felt like I could see this wine cracking up soon. However, I really like where it is now. I loved how nose was so elegant, almost Burgundian with a matching light palate. For me, this really captured what I expect to see in a Margaux, but rarely see in practice. Some might criticize the wine as lacking concentration or intensity, but I saw it as a feature. I'm surprised I bought it because it has a 74 Parker score, but glad I did. Drink up!

A nice, fully mature Bordeaux, still going strong. There is a good core of cool fruit with plenty of acidity. It actually got deeper and longer with a bit of air. Silky smooth. Showing more of the earthy side of Bordeaux, without any Margaux florals. I would drink soon, it can't get any better.

A fine claret. Stood this one up for 2 days, there were slight signs of heat damage at the shoulder, where sediment was roasted onto the glass. The wine needed two ours in the decanter to show its best, and when it did the fruit was complex and shot through with pungent earth and there are also hints of tobacco. This is not the broadest wine, or the most detailed. But it is lovely and generous and pleasing, and true.

Aged Bordeaux rocks. After 45 minutes the half bottle fruits emerged for a pyrotechnic display of classical dried plum and darker berries in a soft overlay. Slight bricking but still ripe.

Nose: dark fruit, violet, cedar and leather. Nicely perfumed and classicly Margaux but not hugely complex. Palate: middle weight with plum, blackberry and leather notes and a note of old books. Finish: moderate but had good depth if a bit one dimensional.
This was a hair better than a bottle of the 83 we had last year but it is time to drink up. Decanted and consumed over about 3hrs.

Delicious and elegant. The fruit is still showing strong, with some intensity on the finish. There is coffee and tobacco along with a range of dark fruit, all held together in such a light and delicate way. This is such a treat.

Decanted for an hour, opened up more in the glass. Tannins are gone but still very drinkable. Hints of Violet's on the finish. Starting to show a brown tinge. The wine looks brick colored. The legs are fast. There is heavy sediment in the bottle. It smells like violet and black currant (cassis). It tastes like black currant (cassis) and violet. The body is light/medium. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

Nose was a bit flat initially but it developed nicely over the couple of hours of drinking. Similarly, the taste was a bit austere in the beginning but it mellowed out with time. This is a nice, well balanced wine, without being anything exceptional. Herbs, dark cherry, and licorice dominate the palate. Port-like sweetness at the end reaffirms the wine's mature character. Again, this was pretty enjoyable but it did not blow me away. There's better value from this vintage elsewhere.

Very sad that this is my last bottle. This wine has given me a case full of pleasure over the past 25 plus years for about $13 on futures in 1984. The wine still looks young with only a hint of bricking. The nose is wonderful, initially it explodes with earthy tobacco, tar, blackberry, dark plum, a hint of vanilla and licorice. Very smooth and complex on the palate. It evolved gracefully over 4+ hours after decanting, went great with both grilled ribeye and spicy grilled pork chop. Nice long finish that lasted almost a minute dominated by the dark fruit, tobacco and earthy mushroom, late in the evening the licorice came out more. A real pleasure to drink!

Opened and decanted half the bottle, the cork was pristine. Dark garnet with some browning on the edges. On the nose, started slowly - but after 10-15 minutes it opened up: complex berries, plums, coffee grounds, a bit of olives. In the mouth: soft and velvety, a rich mix of dark fruits (currants, blackberries) with a tinge of bell pepper - quite long, good acidity, good fruit. From my perspective, this wine is at its peak and should last for many years. Went very well with tri-tip roast and sweet potato fries....

Cork came out mushy and in pieces. Bottle integrity might not be in my favor for this bottle. Flavors were stewed and pruney/wet dog and had very little life left on the palate. A bit tired and over the hill.

Bought the bottle at Leclerc in Clichy (near Paris, France) for 10€. Drank last night with two friends. For me, each sip was intense, moving and vibrant. The balance was perfect. The aromas were complex: incense, exotic wood, spices, dark fruits, tobacco, dark olives. The impact on the palate and the length were surprising, long and deep. We carafed and drank within the hour with a dinner of pasta and ragu.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose was a "grapey" berry aroma with black cherries and plums. Flavors of berries, raspberries and plums. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold. This bottle showed better than the last bottle I had.

BWE: 1982 Bordeaux Retrospective (New York City: Fabio Piccolo Fiore): Dark red care, lighter with some bricking at rim. Warm rich nose of Margaux-berries and flowers with some coffee/mocha notes were initially appealing. Softer and more diffused on the palate than the Margaux, medium finish, probably at peak, very good to excellent.

Drank with Rosemary at the farm with 2 other 1982s from her cellar -- Chateau Grand Ormeau and a barolo. This was the winner among 3 great wines though I think Rosemary preferred the barolo. Very smooth with that aged bouquet of earth and mushroom that I love. Cork came apart but it was sound.

This was a much better bottle than those on 3/23/08. Decanted for an hour and developed further over the following several hours in the glass. Garnet core turning toward amber at the rim. Restrained flavors of cherry and berry fruit, cedar, lead pencil and tobacco. Mature bordeaux, but still shows some freshness and has good acidity. On its way down, but certainly not over the hill.

Wow...did this ever evolve over a couple of hours. Started out flat and thin. Musty aroma reminiscent of mushroom and forest floor and nice garnet color with a hint of brick at the meniscus but no flavor. Assumed to be over the hill. After two hours, the aroma had all but disappeared and fruit had become much more apparent on the palate. Still very light but much more drinkable. Certainly trending down and should be consumed now but really evolves over time.

Took at least 3 hours in the decanter to finally show us what we were waiting for. Nice fruit and well rounded wine were worth the wait. The dusty leathery barnyard gave way to a well balanced wine worthy of the steak au poivre that stood before it..

Opened but did not decant. After 2 hours, somewhat musty and a little muddy looking. Deep garnet color with a touch of orange at the meniscus. Lacking any of the floral nose usually associated with a Margaux. After 20 minutes in the glass, the wine began to open up. The mustiness disappeared but no additional floral note. Some fruit began to appear, mostly light red berry. Much more approachable. This is probably on the downside and should be consumed now.

The cork was toast - completely fell apart during open but the wine had survived. While trying to fish the cork crumbs out, there was a strong barnyard nose with some red fruit and vanilla underneath. Beautiful wine, well aged - the fruit survived the tannins nicely.

Opened two bottles for Easter dinner; one was flawed (musty, sweaty socks), so opened a third, which was fine. Started out rather thin -- austere nose, short finish. But developed nicely over the next hour or so in the decanter and was delicious during our meal; a very nice aged Bordeaux. Saved a glass for later in the evening (about 3 hours after opening), and it was gone: nose, fruit, everything. Give it 45-60 minutes of air, but then get to it! Drink up.

Opened and poured through the magic funnel into a decanter. Faint nose of fruit and dried raisins. Has a surprisingly high level of acidity for a 24 year old wine. Red brown in color with some licorice, tar, and ash on the nose. Good with eggplant parmesan, but would not buy again.

Cork and capsule both showed no signs of poor storage and the fill level was quite admirable. Decanted to remove the considerable sediment, but enjoyed immediately thereafter. There is a clear bricking to indicate a mature claret, with an elegant nose of dried marjoram, licorice, and plums. However, the wine is a bit thin and reedy on the palate. The fruit, while still present, has faded and has fallen behind some still unresolved tannins. The finish is short and somewhat bitter. There is nothing wrong with this bottle - it is simply past its prime. But one wonders if it ever showed enough fruit and concentration to give the impression that it would last this long.

had with keith at a home cellar tasting. i pity those who drank this wine too young as well as those who were unfortunate enough to have bad bottles. we have had many prieure vintages over the years and this appears to be the best of them. not a heavy weight but full of charm and elegance. the cork adhered tightly to the glass causing fatal crumbling upon extraction. the ah-so finished the job. deep garnet color, no browning, no fading. this was bottle number 301552 for anyone looking for wine from the same lot although it is anyone's guess if labeling is done in the same sequence as bottling or has any relationship to barrel of origin. cherry fruit predominates. i don't find licorice or toffee or other flavor elements. tannins and acids are resolved. short finish but a beautiful wine. i do agree that the time to drink is now although it does seem to have been in a steady state for the past year.

Still deep red with little lightening at the rim and no amber. Good nose of tobacco and smoke. Light bodied, still with enough acid to support the program; tastes of tar with hints of blackberries past. This is very light and unextracted for a 1982, but everything is in balance and it is still quite alive. No need to hold any longer, and no need to fear RPs 76 pt. rating, either. (From a pristing lower neck fill bottle purchased from Premier Cru). (With dinner at Michael Mina - corkage was comped, as we bought a bottle of '02 Aubert Richie Chard off the list).

Drink up.

Drinking very nicely and not really showing its age other than with some browning at the rim, not terribly complex, but a rock solid and delicious example of well-aged Bordeaux.

Musty aroma reminiscent of mushroom and forest floor and nice garnet color with a hint of brick at the meniscus but no flavor. Assumed to be over the hill. Certainly trending down and should be consumed now but really evolves over time.
