BWC 23 - Lignier Clos de la Roche: Served after the 98, 00, and next to the 01. Like the others, decanted for an hour-plus before drinking. This was immediately and completely beautiful on the nose, really stunning. It's still fruit, nothing secondary, although the mineral aspect is there at a bass line. But the fruit is luminous and intense, but absolutely pure and without any gloss. Mostly dark fruits, perhaps a bit of rosemary or some kind of forest-y herbal note after another hour open. It's hard to pick out specific notes because the wine was so harmonious, and this is true also of the palate. The texture is all class, just silky and serene, and so pungently flavored, such density without weight. This is a knockout of a wine, at what seems to be the beginning of a good drinking window.

A fabulous bottle of this that needed a good 2-hours open to coalesce. The cherry perfume on the nose is intoxicating and the palate eventually reached the level of the nose showing perfectly ripe cherry fruit with excellent acidity and verve. Silky-fine and still quite youthful but drinking it now for the fabulous succulent fruit is no crime. The finish is taut and complex with superb notes of minerals and cherry spice. A complete Burgundy! 96+

Double-decanted this 3 hours prior to consumption which really helped the wine open up. Loads of lovely cherry fruit with superb vigor and freshness. So balanced and pure with wonderful red spice notes that kick in on the finish along with taut mineral notes. Fabulous Burgundy in the early stages of its drinking window.

A superb example of this great wine and to me showing lovely already with a great acidity and orange peel tang that keeps it really fresh and measured (especially side by side the 03). Others thought it needed more time I thoroughly enjoyed it today already but no doubt this is still on the up and could add another point or two.

Splendid nose of great Pinot: basket of crunchy red fruits and rose petals on an earthy background
The palate is that of a cold Burgundian beauty that I love so much. It is first extremely textured, vaporous like silk and with a natural presence. The structure is not to be outdone with an attack on red fruits. We bite into blueberries, cherries and raspberries at the same time. The freshness of the aromas is magnificent, this bottle is clearly 10 years younger. Then come more rocky aromas, the wet stone stands out clearly and mingles with the faded rose which takes over at the end of the mouth. The wine has a magnificent balance between laser-cut acidity and dense juice, the whole stretching perfectly. Great majestic finish where wet stone and mineral salts take over, all over a magical length.
Grand Pinot, a lord of Burgundy!

The nose is digging two handfuls into a basket of fresh red berries and crushing them as you bring it up to smell. perfect level of acidity and generous red berry. The wine has gorgeous lively palate. The weight on the wine is well balanced and the juice of the vintage shines bright. Gave it a quick double decant before dinner for sediment.

Drank this along with a 2002 Thibault Liger Belair Richebourg:
Lignier Clos de la Roche was the clear winner for me, although one of the people in our group preferred the Richebourg.
Lignier had a beautiful nose of rose petals, fruit, wood and earth, and they all layered together so nicely. It was just a joy on the nose. The palate was similarly complex with maybe a hint more earth. Very long finish. Could have drunk this wine all night.
The TLB Richebourg on the other hand was a bigger wine with much more structure in the mouth and forceful tannins. For me, the tannins cut the finish way too short. Nose was very nice but just not as complex. My sense was that this wine had tremendous potential but needed another 5-10 years to really reach it.

7 years since last taste. This has finally turned around and is now ready. Very complex and deep nose of dark fruit, leaves and some interesting soy, clove, etc. Masculine and brooding. Tannins still present but they play very well together with the fruit and acidity. This is sooo long and fresh. Sorry this winemaker died so young. I remember we visited him 2 months before he died. A truly majestic wine and a lasting testament to Domaine Lignier.
Acker Auction - May 2019 (Zuma in NYC): My only foray into the Burgundy table although I'll agree that it was enjoyable. If you are willing to spend large sums on burgundy turns out there are some great wines. This is a very dark red fruit - more like a currant or a fleshy red plum. Some spice and a hint of the woodsy. Tasty.

Drank alongside the 96 and 01 (and along with an earlier flight of 91 and 93), this was easily my favorite, and perhaps the one I’d consider rebuying. Dark and red fruited, earthy, but still very primary. Density and power with a long finish. this feels like a wine that is still on it's way up

Zachys La Paulée BYO Dinner (Lafayette NYC): 91/96/01/02 A close cousin to the 01 if a bit more rich and less delineated and intense at this stage. So much dense, pure stuffing. Still an adolescent, upside from here.

PoB - Hubert Lignier Dinner, Clos de La Roche vertical 1976-2015 (Hong Kong): Wow, so happy to see this wine repeat its recent performance during a Clos de la Roche / Clos St.Denis dinner where it really shined. This has entered its drinking window and shows amazing complexity of whole clusters, dired meat, game, earth. This with the 1995 were the WOTN for me. Burgundy at its best.

Burghound Symposium Asia - Clos Saint- Denis vs. Clos de la Roche dinner (Hong Kong): I had this wine the last time six years a go and I remember it to be stunning so I was very curious if that performance can be repeated. It did. Starts with a wow nose. Deep, dark blue fruit, barnyard, rose petals, medicinal notes as well. The palate is big but it stays refined. Very aromatic with a long finish. One of the top wines of this high end dinner.

Dinner for Wayne and Hannah ('96 and '02 Burgs, '82 Lagune etc): Not quite the bouquet of the 1996 but richer, more opulent perfumes with dark spices, barbequed game meats and dark fruit. On palate, real richness, matière and structure. Quite primary and more dark fruited than the 1996. Very well balanced though with good acidity to provide freshness and focus. Nick noted the 'solar' nature of the wine but said he preferred the 'fatness of the fruit of the '02 over the leanness of the '96'. 'More flesh on the bones', agreed Con. Ideally, I'd still give this wine about 3-4 more years but it's already outstanding, in my view.

97 pts

John's Birthday Degustation Dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Museum Hotel, Wellington, New Zealand): Tasted with the Rene Engel Grands Echezeaux 2002, this outstanding wine came across as the more sturdy and opaque of the two. Considerably richer on the palate (and as a consequence, the better match at the dinner table), the nose is both riper but also more earthbound. Sour cherry, iodine and earth notes add complexity to this large-scaled Burgundy.

An absolutely wonderful Burgundy, drinking well now. A lively nose jumping from the glass with red and black fruits, vanilla, plum, mint and minerals. A very precise palate with impeccable balance between fruit, acidity and bitterness. Very long and very elegant. Compensates for many bad (and often still expensive) Burgundy experiences. Simply outstanding! Unfortunately this is my last bottle of this wine. PS: All Clos de La Roche 2002 from H.Lignier are called Cuvee Auguste. I forgot exactly why but I think it refers to someone in the family.

Fantastic nose of transparent red fruit, very clean and high pitched nose. Some coffee and spice from the wood. However, the wine is still closed on the palate with tannins masking the fruit. You can sense the depth and clarity of fruit deep down and the length is impressive. Judging from older vintages this will need 10 more years to unfold.

Many top wines from some of the best producers, Rousseau, Roumier, DRC, Leroy etc; 3/28/2019-4/28/2019 (Restaurant Palægade, Copenhagen): This wine had a lovely nose, where you felt the elements had melted together beautifully and that your tastebuds were about to be caressed with lovely red fruit. The taste was much in that league, but not with the length of some of the other wines. I was impressed with this wine from a producer I have very little experience with, but from now on will keep an eye out for.
