St. Emilion night (Chicago, IL): Surprisingly good, especially for the washout vintage. I guess not being able to push the ripeness as hard as possible meant that the estate could try and produce something a little more elegant. And for the most part, they succeeded. The oak still shows a distinct coconut/vanilla/lactone thing, and the palate is relatively hollow. But there's good acidity and grape as opposed to oak tannin. Drinks like a very nice bistro wine.

Fully developed, the wine is quite mineral-driven on the nose and palate, where you find strong oceanic, salty notes that combine with the concentrated, layers of sweet, ripe, black and red fruits, licorice, smoke and dried flower nuances. Decanted about 30 minutes prior to sering seemed to do the trick.

Deep purple, heavy sediment. Short decant. Ripe plum and black raspberry fruit. There is a hint of tobacco and green peppercorns on the finish. Still a bit angular, this softened a bit as the evening went on. Very good now- plenty of stuffing for further evolution.

Tasted on 12/31/2019 (coravin) and finished the rest on 1/18/2020. Smell nice but initially taste sour (as with all quality wines), probably need 4 hour decant to show. The wine (after decanting) has a dominant green plant smell, with a sweet, very rich taste and silkiness mouthfeel. Classic.

More and more I'm finding myself intrigued by some of the higher end bordeauxs - esp from the right bank. I don't know that this was a great year, but this was a great wine. Opened and decanted for a few hours and then drank over the course of maybe 5 or 6 hours with some very stiff competition. This more than held it's own (I think for some it was even WOTN). Some more herbal and earthy notes, but also good darker, maybe less ripe black fruits. Very strong combination.

One of the top wines of this cooler vintage is rich, concentrated and loaded with ripe, black cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and wet earth. The tannins are soft, the finish is long and the aromatics are complex. For those that find Pavie too much for their delicate senses, this is a good vintage to explore, due to its cool, weather characteristics.

This is by far my favorite pavie at this point of time. It definitely needs a 90 mins decant. In a difficult 02 vintage, the wine truly stands out. Cassis, sweet black fruit, ink and perfume on the nose. The palate has depth and weight despite the weak vintage. There are a lot of underlying substance and complexity in this wine. Palate is juicy and big with balanced fruit and the right bank elegance. I feel like this has a better balance than the 98 pavie. 93+

This was a nice bottle, especially given the terrible vintage. Definitely noticed the softness and plum of the merlot. In a very good spot. Went well with steak. No need to wait any longer. Full-bodied without being too much.

I know a lot of people think this is ready to drink but this bottle clearly wasn't ready. Even after a few hour decant the wine was holding back a lot and very tight. Much better day 2 and clearly has the stuff to be outstanding but not going to touch another bottle until 2017.

Wow! This is very good, much better than the 02 margaux I tried last week. Popped and poured..this is ready for business. The nose had truffle, black fruit, cigar box, vanilla, cedar wood and licorice. Palate had good depth with beautiful black fruit emerging with hint of truffle and caramel. This is drinking nicely now.

2 hours of air brought out the chocolate covered, black cherries, truffle, licorice, cigar box and floral notes. Soft, smooth and round, but lacking the volume and opulence found in the top vintages, this is really drinking well. While 2 hours of air brought the wine around, after 4 hours of air, the wine lost its edge. This is for drinking now and over the next decade or so.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $60+ (Bin 75): Dark garnet core with crimson rim; cigar, leather, menthol, Bordeaux funk, round, plum, ripe cherry and currant, some green; nice richness, spicy, red fruit, some leather, firm tannin, tar, cigar, high toned finish, alcohol stands out a bit; still youthful; one of the better '02 Right Banks, others really liked though I felt it lacked some definition due to the modern winemaking.

We brought this bottle to La Belle Ve for your 38th anniversary. They decanted it for us. We enjoyed a glass of Chardonnay while we gave the Pavie some time to open up. The first taste was of dark cherry with hints of a forest. The last glass was very close to perfect wine.

This is really outstanding. The nose has dried plum, black currant, saddle leather, earthy and savory notes, hints of vanilla, and some dried floral scents. The palate is lovely with loads of flavor and complexity and an almost tension like feel. This is just beginning to show signs of maturity but has years to develop yet.

Floral, earth, cherry blossoms, licorice, black raspberries, smoke and a faint whisper of oak in the background open to a soft, dusty, olive tapenade and plummy palate. This is probably at or close to its peak. No hurry to drink it, but it's not a wine to lay down for decades. I decanted this about 2 hours before consumption. The olive component became stronger as the night wore on. My instincts say, this wine might be better with a short decant, or popped and poured and allowed to develop in the glass.

20 Year Anniversary Party at the Lake; 6/21/2014-6/22/2014 (Our lake house): I like all pavie wines. This vintage is drinking much better than the famed 2005. Just so well made. Rich but not over extracted. Tannins present but well integrated. Some earth but no funk. Guests really enjoyed this high quality St Emillion.

First try of a Pavie and was not disappointed. Popped and poured expecting tannins to be harsh. Medium intense, herbaceous, fruity aromas in the glass. Tannins were surprisingly soft with minimal airing. Finish was complex with decent length. Got better as night wore on. Would love to try this estate again in this and other vintages.

Appearance: Bright and clear, this wine is of deep ruby color, with legs. Nose: Clean, the nose shows medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit such as blackberry, blackcurrant and cherries, sweet spice of cloves, oak notes of cedar, kernel notes of dark coffee, maturity notes of truffle and wet leaves, mineral notes of earth. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry, it has medium acidity and medium (+) tannin of ripe and velvety texture. The alcohol level is medium (+), with a medium (+) body, showing medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit such as blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry, oak notes of cedar, maturity notes of tobacco, sweet spice of cloves, kernel notes of chocolate. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality St-Emilion with good intensity on the nose, showing a wide range of complex aromas, the wine is robust with good structure, yet still having the finesse and elegance, with a palate showing smooth tannin. The flavors are similarly interesting with also good concentration, with the main critics being the alcohol level is a bit too warming. Finishing with a good length, the wine is ready to drink now though can benefit from further ageing of another 5-7 years.

I have enjoyed the 02 Pavie in the past. This bottle just simply didn’t show well yet it was a sound bottle. Black fruits, very ripe, a hint of port, bitter chocolate, caramel and noticeable cedar note coming from oak. Ripe fruits give the impression of highly concentrated wine yet the middle palate is hollow. The finish shows noticeable dry tannins. I hope this will come together.

Opened Thursday for Friday dinner service. Opens tight, dark garnet toward purple. Shut down pretty hard, as suspected, but if it sits in the decanter for the next 24 hours (at 57F), it might be ready - more ready than when I opened it, anyway.
Wasn't giving up much first, but after an hour, the ounce I poured off in a glass began to slowly unwind. Iron, fig paste, espresso roast, snap peas, red currant, freshly picked raspberry, pipe tobacco, and cranberry. I have no illusions, this will be bursting at the seams come dinner time tomorrow.
Full bodied, with sufficient acids and very fine-grained tannins. For an '02, all I could ask for from the vintage. Rolland inspired wines are always guilty pleasure, this will be no different. 14,0% abv, drink thru 2026, about a finger's worth of very fine sediment.

There are some nights when a bottle of Pavie is all that will do. This was one of those nights. Still dark in color, blackberry, blueberry, earth, truffle, kirsch liqueur, licorice, smoke and a hint of espresso bean with dark chocolate made the perfume come alive with little effort and perhaps 30 minutes in the decanter. On the palate is where its star shines brightly. It's the perfect balance between thick and concentrated meshed against opulent, velvet textures. This is like drinking pure pleasure. If you get hung up on modern, vs traditional styles, perhaps this is not your thing. But if you look at wines as a vehicle for pleasure, this is a nice way to go. It's young, but starting to open. Drink it, or wait a decade.

What a disappointment. Cork was intact and the color looked fine, but the fruit was thin and faded. Drinkable but oak, spice and acid prominant with little fruit to provide a counterbalance. I wasn't sure if it was in a dumb phase, or maybe a little cooked, though other tasting notes here seem to have made similar observations.

La Commanderie de Bordeaux à Vancouver - 2002 Horizontal (Blue Water Cafe): Medium red. At first this was quite shy on the nose and wasn’t giving up much. As it opened in the glass notes of tobacco, riper dark fruits, oak and hints of coffee. Smoothest wine of the flight on the palate and also the ripest and most forward with a heavily extracted but not over-the-top profile. As other tasters stated, this was far less Pavie-like than other modern vintages which is a good thing in my mind. It’s full and rich and smooth on the palate with just a touch of roasted fruit coming through but you really have to look for it. I voted this as the best of this flight at this point and thought it was excellent. But as it sat in the glass (about an hour later) it started showing off-putting roasted notes on both the nose and palate. Not sure where this is going. Judgment reserved.

A small 2002 Bordeaux Retrospective (Maude's Liquor Bar, Chicago IL): nose: oak is certainly there with tones of creosote, dark red fruits, dark cherries, some floral tones and coffee grinds as well. While the oak is upfront, things were more in place together for me. Still, oak influences are the dominant tones with some fruit as well.
taste: full bodied with chewy tannins, but they aren't truly overpowering. The tones of coffee grinds, dark red cherries, smoke and some dark red fruits are a bit brutish and bigger right now.
overall: The oak is certainly there, as well as some extraction, but it does come off as working together. I'm not sure how this will develop and where it will go.

GJE CRD 2008 and EP 2011; 3/29/2012-4/4/2012 (Bordeaux, France): It is start to soften, gain density and complexity yet it still shows more primary than the 00 and the 01. Dark fruits, cassis, allspice and bitter chocolate. Perhaps the biggest surprise.

Right-bank Bordeaux tasting (Watson's, Hong Kong): Complex nose and palate of various fruits and a little oak. Good acidity on this. The tannins were very smooth. This seemed to be just moving into tertiary flavours. One to watch.

What a fantastic wine! Classic Bordeaux! Fabulous bouque with cherry, strawberry, blue berry, a bit of smoke. Smooth mid palate with drak fruits, dates, hint of jam, expresso, racy, tender, and juicy. Long lasting finish. Drink very well now and should be drinking well for next decade.
Blackberry liqueur, smoke, truffle, stone, earth, caramel, fresh herbs and a faint hint of espresso bean make up the perfume. On the palate, concentrated flavors of fresh black raspberry, bitter chocolate, Maraschino cherry flavors unfold with luscious, rich, sexy textures. This is a great place to catch this wine. It should deliver pleasure and continue to expand for at least another 10-15 years. This is much better than the last bottle I opened and both were from the same case!

Decanted for 90 minutes before drinking with grilled pork chops. Aroma has a bit of mustiness to it, but has some tobacco, mushroom and wood smell, as well as blueberry and blakcberry. On the palate, mushroom comes through, as well as the tobacco. The fruit is quite restrained in the taste, but still has the dark fruits in the background. Still quite a bit of tannin on it, even after 2 hours in the decanter. There seemed to be a tartness that developed on the finish after 3 hours, almost like tart cherries. Very enjoyable wine, but the finish that developed did make me wonder about where this is heading.

This opened with a quiet nose of truffle, smoke, minerality and spicy black raspberries. Lush, plush and sensuous on the palate, most of the tannin has been resolved. The wine finished with a soft, spicy, licorice and spicy, black cherry finish. Each bottle has its own personality. Some are going to be better than others .I tend to think this was not a correct bottle as I've had this wine before and its shown better. I'm going to need to open another in the near future to discover if it was this bottle, or the specific vintage that has not developing as well as expected.

Decanted half and left the rest in the bottle, agree with most of the descriptions but somehow, it did not click tonight. Perhaps it was because the 02 Sassicaia opened together did so well as to overshadow the Pavie. 2 hours into dinner, it started to come together but the floral tones was a bit subdued to my liking, fruits were hitting high notes. Need to tasted again and focus more.

Threw this into a bbq mix where many a Napa Cabs were served (as well expected of me), and oh yeah... I had wrapped it in foil. Let's have some fun. Opened at 1pm. Served at 5. Initially this showed some reddish fruits of raspberries and red currant with a hint of strawberries. I spent a few minutes with it right after pop and thought to myself how it fit into my expectations of what I thought it should taste like according to others notes and conversations about Pavie in general, this being my second Gérard Perse era Pavie. This was Bordeaux, and a real nice Bordeaux indeed. By time served it was fun to watch the group taste and guess and much more of the same. Someone said Napa Cab right off the bat, others guessed mid nineties Napa Cabernet. Color was a pretty hue of carmine with burnt-umber edges and transparent throwing a slight/fine sediment. The crowd looked toward me suspiciously. I said nothing. It had real nice purity with a tremendously expressive midpalate with an almost pinot-like mouth feel. There was some nice hints of cedar and spice-box with tobacco, lite-soy sauce, and smoke. What I really loved was that strawberry note, and this in particular combined with some damp cellar floor, earth and a very real 'Regal-ness' told me we were firmly right of the Gironde. Someone said 2002 or 2003, I nodded yes. OK, time for a hint: It is a Bordeaux varietal other than Cabernet Sauvignon. Someone said it was not Merlot; sleuth-Nano needed another pour (or two) and Cheryl who knows me all to well said 'Somebody had to have gifted you this wine Mike', to which I gave a BIG grin; they were onto me and it was time to reveal my one and only bottle of Bordeaux to a boisterous and laughing crowd. First Growth Dinner (plus some La Mission) (Ruths Chris - Washington, DC): Compared to the elderly wines from Bordeaux drank alongside this, it's easy to consider my perception of this to be flawed. I did however, find it to more enjoyable and restrained than I had imagined it being...so that's a good thing. Very deep nose of cherry tobacco, cassis, smoke and vanilla. Palate was concentrated was bright with there was a freshness to it that seemed to hold any overblown fruit or alcohol in check. Overall I was impressed.

This is my 5th bottle of this and it keeps getting better. Need to try hard to hold off on the remainders. Huge fruit and raspberry on the nose. Mouth showing a big fat wine with great minearlity and still considerable tannins. Secondary flavors include licorice and maraschino cherry. Delicious fruit forward wine with good complexity that will clearly improve with bottle age.

Color: Dark purple with a hint of brown rim Nose: a tad closed, but after 45 minutes of decanting, nice dark fruits, notes of earth, leather and a nice subtle hint of barnyard and tobacco. Palate: Similar to nose, beautiful black plum with other dark fruits, notes of cedar, and a smooth finish with very sweet tannins. Not a typical Bordeaux, which is not surprising for a Pavie. Much more New World in its character, though still clearly terroir driven. Well balanced, well integrated. For this bottle, it surprised me to be a bit closed, but otherwise, it is a very drinkable wine and still very enjoyable. My expectations were higher, admittedly, which is probably reflected in my score, but no doubt, this is a phenomenally made wine that will last a generation. Personally, I will wait 6 months or a year to open my next bottle, and hope to enjoy it even more than I did this bottle. But again, it is very enjoyable now.

My first Pavie. Mixed feelings. Excellent heady wine. You can taste the attention to detail, with the dark fruit, earth, meat, a little barnyard, and tobacco. First class all the way. While Napa-esque, I've not had a better Napa for this price. Its just that at this point in my wine evolution, I much prefer classic Bordeaux. I'm glad I have only a few bottles in my mini-vertical. Maybe I should trade them in for good Medocs that I'd enjoy more.

WOW! Incredible nose! High complexity, very good balance, long finish. I want to taste over multiple days to see how it evolves... I'm planning to drink this bottle over multiple days to see how it evelves and I can tell you that it is extremely difficicult to resist finishing the bottle on day one. This is my first experience with a Pavie and I'm amazed to see how much it can deliver from an 'off' vintage... I can only imagine what the experience can be with a premium vintage! 93 pts now and definitely 95+ in 5-10 years. I'm really glad that I have a few more bottles in the cellar.

At St Jacques in Raleigh. This is why Bordeaux will always beat Cali in off years. Barnyard nose, but def dark fruit, terrior driven. On the initial, Coffee and Leather and milk chocolate, balance was perfect, acid was nice, cut throw a orange merlot sauce like a laser! Tannins were sweet very tame and the finish was silk! Nice bit of vannilla. Wine was very feninine. This why I love Pavie, In big years 00, 03, 05 very big and broad, and in off years totally different, feninine and supple. Drinking great now!

Decanted for 6+ hours nose- nose - dark cherry, roasted coffee, mint, toasted oak mouth - dark fruit, followed by prominent espresso on the midpalate. The tannins have a nice texture and coat the palate. The wine has a lengthy and dry finish. I'm seeking out but not really finding the 'minerality'. Oddly I though this went better by itself than with the pesto pasta.

Good nose of tobacco, leather, and cedar shavings. Big and round on the palate, with a bit of residual sweetness. Lots of fruit, but not nearly enough to obscure the high alcohol, particularly on the finish: As the fruit died away, the alcohol emerged as a significant component of the aftertaste, almost like spirits in the back of the throat and up the nose, finally leaving behind a slight yet very unpleasant suggestion of rubbing alcohol. Must say the experience was a bit of a disappointment from a wine of this reputation and price.

Pavie Vertical: Opaque, red color. Blue, vanilla fruit with deep roasted notes of oak and popcorn. Also a nice flowery touch. High alcohol. Powerful taste with high acidity. Somewhat sweet, round fruit.

Decanted 4 hrs, a thing of beauty as it unfolded in the decanter. Very powerful nose of red and black fruits, pencil shavings, graphite, dark spices and vanilla. The palate had too many layers of fruit to count yet the acidity was somehow able to wash down the sheer size of this wine. A true bargain at this price.

Decanted for 3 hours but probably not long enough as it kept getting better and better as time passed. Inky black color. Fantastic nose of minerals, earth, ripe berry and cocoa. Great mouth feel with firm, integrated tannins. Elegant wine -- no fruit bomb - with classic right bank minerality layered with black, vibrant fruit and smoke. Finish goes on and on. Great wine that is drinkable now yet will continue to improve for a long time.

Decanted 3 hours. Beautiful perfumed nose of cocoa. Mouth - very silky and round, decent fruit structure but then a gorgeous chocolate and cocoa midpalate. Almost tastes like a dessert, but fully dry. Went best with some medium strength cheeses. Far from a fruit bomb, and not appealing to those in the group looking for a fruit driven wine. This was ultimately a very classy cuvee.

Really opened up after about 90 minutes in the decanter. A deep, dark purple in the glass. Very expressive nose with a bit of barnyard funk, black fruit and smoke. Rich plum, cassis and a meaty element keep evolving through the midpalate and long finish highlighted by fine, prickly tannins. Very complex with many, many layers and tremendous balance. I am glad I have one more, as it will most definitely benefit from a few years in bottle.

I drank this over 3 nights. The first night it was all about terroir - a muscular, intense nose of saddle leather, meat, tobacco leaf and vanilla bean. Stunning on the nose, the palate was a bit tight. On night 2 the wine decided to play a bit dumb: the nose had retreated to become very subdued and the palate was not really giving up any fruit. Night 3: friggin' stunning, on the nose and the palate. If you've got a few, don't wait too long to open one - it's very, very pleasurable, and worth every cent. Drink through 2022. Approx $105, 14% abv.

Not as wow as the first bottle of this wine that I consumed but more elegant. Decanted for close to two hours and still slow to come around. Lots of leather and secondary earthy notes. Very looong finish. Will hold my remaining bottle for some time.

I seldom taste Bordeaux of this caliber and I acknowledge that this first-time experience in itself risks boosting my enthusiasm... But... what a wine. Extremely elegant, massive but lean nose of crushed minerality, right bank terroir, white smoke and spice. Vibrant and soo elegant fruit on the palate, earthy minerality with silky and integrated tannins. Wonderful mouthfeel with incredible depth and a very long finish. This is a stunning wine and a big achievment for the vintage. And it is drinking beautifully right now.

Utterly smooth, and drinking very well right now. Nose of crushed gravel and ripe berry fruit. Taste was complex and layered, with a medium body, and cedar, creme-de-cassis, slight brown spice notes, earthy mineral, and healthy acid. Tannins were silky, and finish was moderate, with lingering blackberry. Very nice wine for the vintage.

My first taste of Pavie and wow, I was blown away. This is the SQN of the right bank! Black as night with a massive nose. I couldn't keep my nose out of the glass. Very powerful on the palate while maintaining a perfect balance. Vibrant fruit, new oak and earthy notes. Superb mouthfeel. Long, long finish. I kept saying OMG. Incredible stuff.

nose - smokey, beef jerky, red pepper (see below), plum. Mostly oak derived aromas. My dad thinks it smelled a bit like shoe polish. "if I smelled this at the shoe stand, I would think its a good shoe polish" mouth - a touch thin with vegetal notes. Complex. Juicy red fruit, strong tobacco notes. Good acidity. Good tannins. Well balanced (exactly what everyone else has said no?). I have a second bottle which i will hold onto for 5 years and retry.

Wow!!! Quite dark visually. Popped/poured. Initially quite smoky on the nose. This move back a bit, with a sweet if dark perfume on the nose becoming more evident. Smokiness continues on the palate, along with a variety of savory flavors. This has a tremendous amount of depth, but other than that does little to remind me of New World. This is meatier, gamier and more savory while at the same time less oak / vanilla. Nevertheless, it packs a wallop! Decant for 3-4 hours before serving.
Update: 2/3 of a btl day 2, no refrigeration. Meat and tomatoes with eucalyptus and cedar on the nose. Palate remains rich, with a lot of tannins and wood on the finish. I'm looking fwd to trying this one again 3-4 years from now.

Amazing balance between old world style and new world fruits. For an off vintage I really enjoyed this. A aromatic plethora of tobacco, black cherry, bell peppers , licourice and blackberry pie. On the palate beautiful layers peel themselves away second after second, revealing a silky texture and deep dark earthen coated fruits

WLTV North Jersey Off-Line at Basilicos: Aerated the heck out of this. The fruit really never made its way out, but I did finally get some smoke on the nose. The taste was very closed, but there was some great structure there with the oak and small hints of other flavors. I can't score this now, but I know this is going to be really yummy in about 10-15 years.

Dark, black-ruby color. Very fresh and open nose of chocolate, tobacco, red pepper and vanilla pudding. Tannins are thick and rich, yet very friendly at this time. Balance and refinement in every sip. May be the wine of the vintage for me.

St. Emilion night (Chicago, IL): Surprisingly good, especially for the washout vintage. I guess not being able to push the ripeness as hard as possible meant that the estate could try and produce something a little more elegant. And for the most part, they succeeded. The oak still shows a distinct coconut/vanilla/lactone thing, and the palate is relatively hollow. But there's good acidity and grape as opposed to oak tannin. Drinks like a very nice bistro wine.

This doesn’t need much time at all - 30 minutes of air in the bottle. Already lost a bit after being open 90 minutes. In a nice place with a great nose and mouthfeel but honestly a bit underwhelmed.

Tasted on 12/31/2019 (coravin) and finished the rest on 1/18/2020. Smell nice but initially taste sour (as with all quality wines), probably need 4 hour decant to show. The wine (after decanting) has a dominant green plant smell, with a sweet, very rich taste and silkiness mouthfeel. Classic.

More and more I'm finding myself intrigued by some of the higher end bordeauxs - esp from the right bank. I don't know that this was a great year, but this was a great wine. Opened and decanted for a few hours and then drank over the course of maybe 5 or 6 hours with some very stiff competition. This more than held it's own (I think for some it was even WOTN). Some more herbal and earthy notes, but also good darker, maybe less ripe black fruits. Very strong combination.

Upon uncorking and decanting, an amazing aroma filled the living room.
Spices, abundances of deep dark fruits, pepper, woody, burnt meat juices, etc.

One of the top wines of this cooler vintage is rich, concentrated and loaded with ripe, black cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and wet earth. The tannins are soft, the finish is long and the aromatics are complex. For those that find Pavie too much for their delicate senses, this is a good vintage to explore, due to its cool, weather characteristics.

This is by far my favorite pavie at this point of time. It definitely needs a 90 mins decant. In a difficult 02 vintage, the wine truly stands out. Cassis, sweet black fruit, ink and perfume on the nose. The palate has depth and weight despite the weak vintage. There are a lot of underlying substance and complexity in this wine. Palate is juicy and big with balanced fruit and the right bank elegance. I feel like this has a better balance than the 98 pavie. 93+

Wow! This is very good, much better than the 02 margaux I tried last week. Popped and poured..this is ready for business. The nose had truffle, black fruit, cigar box, vanilla, cedar wood and licorice. Palate had good depth with beautiful black fruit emerging with hint of truffle and caramel. This is drinking nicely now.

We brought this bottle to La Belle Ve for your 38th anniversary. They decanted it for us. We enjoyed a glass of Chardonnay while we gave the Pavie some time to open up. The first taste was of dark cherry with hints of a forest. The last glass was very close to perfect wine.

This is really outstanding. The nose has dried plum, black currant, saddle leather, earthy and savory notes, hints of vanilla, and some dried floral scents. This is probably at or close to its peak. No hurry to drink it, but it's not a wine to lay down for decades. I decanted this about 2 hours before consumption. The olive component became stronger as the night wore on. My instincts say, this wine might be better with a short decant, or popped and poured and allowed to develop in the glass.

20 Year Anniversary Party at the Lake; 6/21/2014-6/22/2014 (Our lake house): I like all pavie wines. This vintage is drinking much better than the famed 2005. Just so well made. Rich but not over extracted. Tannins present but well integrated. Some earth but no funk. Guests really enjoyed this high quality St Emillion.

First try of a Pavie and was not disappointed. Popped and poured expecting tannins to be harsh. Medium intense, herbaceous, fruity aromas in the glass. Tannins were surprisingly soft with minimal airing. Finish was complex with decent length. Got better as night wore on. Would love to try this estate again in this and other vintages.

I have enjoyed the 02 Pavie in the past. This bottle just simply didn’t show well yet it was a sound bottle. Black fruits, very ripe, a hint of port, bitter chocolate, caramel and noticeable cedar note coming from oak. Ripe fruits give the impression of highly concentrated wine yet the middle palate is hollow. The finish shows noticeable dry tannins. I hope this will come together.

There are some nights when a bottle of Pavie is all that will do. This was one of those nights. Still dark in color, blackberry, blueberry, earth, truffle, kirsch liqueur, licorice, smoke and a hint of espresso bean with dark chocolate made the perfume come alive with little effort and perhaps 30 minutes in the decanter. On the palate is where its star shines brightly. It's the perfect balance between thick and concentrated meshed against opulent, velvet textures. This is like drinking pure pleasure. If you get hung up on modern, vs traditional styles, perhaps this is not your thing. But if you look at wines as a vehicle for pleasure, this is a nice way to go. It's young, but starting to open. Drink it, or wait a decade.

A small 2002 Bordeaux Retrospective (Maude's Liquor Bar, Chicago IL): nose: oak is certainly there with tones of creosote, dark red fruits, dark cherries, some floral tones and coffee grinds as well. While the oak is upfront, things were more in place together for me. Still, oak influences are the dominant tones with some fruit as well.
taste: full bodied with chewy tannins, but they aren't truly overpowering. The tones of coffee grinds, dark red cherries, smoke and some dark red fruits are a bit brutish and bigger right now.
overall: The oak is certainly there, as well as some extraction, but it does come off as working together. I'm not sure how this will develop and where it will go.

Right-bank Bordeaux tasting (Watson's, Hong Kong): Complex nose and palate of various fruits and a little oak. Good acidity on this. The tannins were very smooth. This seemed to be just moving into tertiary flavours. One to watch.

What a fantastic wine! Classic Bordeaux! Fabulous bouque with cherry, strawberry, blue berry, a bit of smoke. Smooth mid palate with drak fruits, dates, hint of jam, expresso, racy, tender, and juicy. Long lasting finish. Drink very well now and should be drinking well for next decade.

Decanted for 90 minutes before drinking with grilled pork chops. Aroma has a bit of mustiness to it, but has some tobacco, mushroom and wood smell, as well as blueberry and blakcberry. On the palate, mushroom comes through, as well as the tobacco. The fruit is quite restrained in the taste, but still has the dark fruits in the background. Still quite a bit of tannin on it, even after 2 hours in the decanter. There seemed to be a tartness that developed on the finish after 3 hours, almost like tart cherries. Very enjoyable wine, but the finish that developed did make me wonder about where this is heading.

This opened with a quiet nose of truffle, smoke, minerality and spicy black raspberries. Lush, plush and sensuous on the palate, most of the tannin has been resolved. The wine finished with a soft, spicy, licorice and spicy, black cherry finish. Each bottle has its own personality. Some are going to be better than others .I tend to think this was not a correct bottle as I've had this wine before and its shown better. I'm going to need to open another in the near future to discover if it was this bottle, or the specific vintage that has not developing as well as expected.

Decanted half and left the rest in the bottle, agree with most of the descriptions but somehow, it did not click tonight. Perhaps it was because the 02 Sassicaia opened together did so well as to overshadow the Pavie. 2 hours into dinner, it started to come together but the floral tones was a bit subdued to my liking, fruits were hitting high notes. Threw this into a bbq mix where many a Napa Cabs were served (as well expected of me), and oh yeah... I had wrapped it in foil. Let's have some fun.
Opened at 1pm. Served at 5.
Initially this showed some reddish fruits of raspberries and red currant with a hint of strawberries. I spent a few minutes with it right after pop and thought to myself how it fit into my expectations of what I thought it should taste like according to others notes and conversations about Pavie in general, this being my second Gérard Perse era Pavie. This was Bordeaux, and a real nice Bordeaux indeed.
By time served it was fun to watch the group taste and guess and much more of the same. Someone said Napa Cab right off the bat, others guessed mid nineties Napa Cabernet. Color was a pretty hue of carmine with burnt-umber edges and transparent throwing a slight/fine sediment. The crowd looked toward me suspiciously. I said nothing. It had real nice purity with a tremendously expressive midpalate with an almost pinot-like mouth feel. There was some nice hints of cedar and spice-box with tobacco, lite-soy sauce, and smoke. What I really loved was that strawberry note, and this in particular combined with some damp cellar floor, earth and a very real 'Regal-ness' told me we were firmly right of the Gironde.
Someone said 2002 or 2003, I nodded yes. OK, time for a hint: It is a Bordeaux varietal other than Cabernet Sauvignon. Someone said it was not Merlot; sleuth-Nano needed another pour (or two) and Cheryl who knows me all to well said 'Somebody had to have gifted you this wine Mike', to which I gave a BIG grin; they were onto me and it was time to reveal my one and only bottle of Bordeaux to a boisterous and laughing crowd.

This is my 5th bottle of this and it keeps getting better. Need to try hard to hold off on the remainders. Huge fruit and raspberry on the nose. Mouth showing a big fat wine with great minearlity and still considerable tannins. Secondary flavors include licorice and maraschino cherry. Delicious fruit forward wine with good complexity that will clearly improve with bottle age.

My expectations were higher, admittedly, which is probably reflected in my score, but no doubt, this is a phenomenally made wine that will last a generation. Personally, I will wait 6 months or a year to open my next bottle, and hope to enjoy it even more than I did this bottle. But again, it is very enjoyable now.

My first Pavie. Mixed feelings. Excellent heady wine. You can taste the attention to detail, with the dark fruit, earth, meat, a little barnyard, and tobacco. First class all the way. While Napa-esque, I've not had a better Napa for this price. Its just that at this point in my wine evolution, I much prefer classic Bordeaux. I'm glad I have only a few bottles in my mini-vertical. Maybe I should trade them in for good Medocs that I'd enjoy more.

I'm planning to drink this bottle over multiple days to see how it evelves and I can tell you that it is extremely difficicult to resist finishing the bottle on day one. This is my first experience with a Pavie and I'm amazed to see how much it can deliver from an 'off' vintage... I can only imagine what the experience can be with a premium vintage! 93 pts now and definitely 95+ in 5-10 years. I'm really glad that I have a few more bottles in the cellar.

At St Jacques in Raleigh. This is why Bordeaux will always beat Cali in off years. Barnyard nose, but def dark fruit, terrior driven. On the initial, Coffee and Leather and milk chocolate, balance was perfect, acid was nice, cut throw a orange merlot sauce like a laser! Tannins were sweet very tame and the finish was silk! Nice bit of vannilla. Wine was very feninine. This why I love Pavie, In big years 00, 03, 05 very big and broad, and in off years totally different, feninine and supple. Drinking great now!

Decanted 4 hrs, a thing of beauty as it unfolded in the decanter. Very powerful nose of red and black fruits, pencil shavings, graphite, dark spices and vanilla. The palate had too many layers of fruit to count yet the acidity was somehow able to wash down the sheer size of this wine. A true bargain at this price.

Really opened up after about 90 minutes in the decanter. A deep, dark purple in the glass. Very expressive nose with a bit of barnyard funk, black fruit and smoke. Rich plum, cassis and a meaty element keep evolving through the midpalate and long finish highlighted by fine, prickly tannins. Very complex with many, many layers and tremendous balance. I am glad I have one more, as it will most definitely benefit from a few years in bottle.

I drank this over 3 nights. The first night it was all about terroir - a muscular, intense nose of saddle leather, meat, tobacco leaf and vanilla bean. Stunning on the nose, the palate was a bit tight. On night 2 the wine decided to play a bit dumb: the nose had retreated to become very subdued and the palate was not really giving up any fruit. Night 3: friggin' stunning, on the nose and the palate. If you've got a few, don't wait too long to open one - it's very, very pleasurable, and worth every cent. Drink through 2022. Approx $105, 14% abv.

I seldom taste Bordeaux of this caliber and I acknowledge that this first-time experience in itself risks boosting my enthusiasm... But... what a wine. Extremely elegant, massive but lean nose of crushed minerality, right bank terroir, white smoke and spice. Vibrant and soo elegant fruit on the palate, earthy minerality with silky and integrated tannins. Wonderful mouthfeel with incredible depth and a very long finish. This is a stunning wine and a big achievment for the vintage. And it is drinking beautifully right now.

My first taste of Pavie and wow, I was blown away. This is the SQN of the right bank! Black as night with a massive nose. I couldn't keep my nose out of the glass. Very powerful on the palate while maintaining a perfect balance. Vibrant fruit, new oak and earthy notes. Superb mouthfeel. Long, long finish. I kept saying OMG. Incredible stuff.

Wow!!! Quite dark visually. Popped/poured. Initially quite smoky on the nose. This move back a bit, with a sweet if dark perfume on the nose becoming more evident. Smokiness continues on the palate, along with a variety of savory flavors. This has a tremendous amount of depth, but other than that does little to remind me of New World. This is meatier, gamier and more savory while at the same time less oak / vanilla. Nevertheless, it packs a wallop! Decant for 3-4 hours before serving.
Update: 2/3 of a btl day 2, no refrigeration. Meat and tomatoes with eucalyptus and cedar on the nose. Palate remains rich, with a lot of tannins and wood on the finish. I'm looking fwd to trying this one again 3-4 years from now.
