At this point, it’s a pizza wine, but at least the tannins aren't overwhelming. Very dark, no fruit, a little bitter with no complexity but should stand up to pepperoni.

Someone observed if you don't like a Bordeaux, just keep it cellared and it will come around eventually. Some bottles of this some years ago were all tannic and pretty much undrinkable. This still is amply tannic, but it's not longer overwhelming. Some minerality, not a lot of fruit, some savory notes. It's probably worth seeing what a couple/few more years will do with the remaining bottles.

Still plenty tannic but not so fiercely so as some years back. The fruit has faded, and its tired and drying on the finish. Maybe time will help. Maybre. My recollection is this wine was at its best when young. Better as cooking wine than for drinking pleasure.

Deep ruby colour. Aromas are mostly forest floor and there’s little fruit, despite the rich colour. Palate is bone dry and drying; huge clenchy tannins that will need 5-10 years to soften, however the fruit has faded and there won’t be much of any fruit left 2025-2030. Overall, a poor wine making effort in what most Bordelaise call an “armchair vintage”.

Pleasant though not a lot of fruit left, but that's assuming this had fruit when it was younger. Relatively low alcohol contributed to its "easy" style. Well made but simple, one dimensional.

Best part here is the gorgeous nose. The immediate entry on the tongue is also quite good, with milk chocolate, cassis, currants, and a bit of tannin remaining. However, after the initial taste it’s a bit thin and lacking much in the way of a finish, which is somewhat expected of less then hallowed terroir such as where this is from. However, for the price paid this punches above its weight class.

OK ..please read. This is not ready unless you decant this for days. I opened the bottle and decanted it for hours the 1st day...Too much tannin. I froze the bottle and defrosted it, and poured a glass. Barely drinkable. I repeated this 2 more times before a glass showed me: A dense dark violet red. A medicinal nose with some dark currant aromas. Full body dark fruit with still large tannin that starts in the middle and extends to the finish. This is much better than the initial pour. It is still very structured, but the fruit might be enough to balance some of the tannin in 5-10 years.....

A sad winemaking effort. The berry fruit is stewed and figgy - the winemaking team certainly wanted a ripe wine and it’s over-the-top. Low acid, still tannic & grippy; there’s no balance and the wine is unpleasant to drink. There are better Spanish reds at half the price with the same organoleptic profile.

I seem to be on a bad run of late. Yet another corked 2005 bordeaux, and the second one tonight. Out of 6bottles of this in 375, this makes a third of them tainted. I think I've had more corked bottles this year than each of the past several complete years. It might be a function of staring to hit my 2005s. I hope the corks have gotten better since this.

My first of three of these QPR Bordeaux wines. PnP and drank with braised pork shoulder. I would recommend opening this an hour prior to drinking to allow time for the wine to settle down. This wine had good fruit and graphite flavors. Quite a nice bottle for the price. Drink or hold.

Gave it an hour of air and then aerated. Obviously, a very well made wine from less-than-stellar fruit. Assorted red and blue fruits, with hints of wet leaves and tobacco. Medium body, with a more-than-adequate finish. Still quite tannic, with a boatload of acidity. Great with fatty food. Still has a long life expectancy.

After about an hour decant, this was the smoothest yet, tannins are actually silky, and no hardness often encountered with lower end 05 Bordeaux. I would say this is at peak right now, as fruit is still lively.

from 750 This is drinking younger than its age would suggest. Still quite tannic. Best with food. It probably showed best about two hours after opening.

Well worth the wait, this was very nicely aged right bank, black cherries dominating the fruit with lively acidity and developed tannins providing a good backbone. Has some nice herbal components to it and a bit of spice from the well-integrated oak.
Wouldn't have guessed this is twelve years old! The 2009 I had some time ago seemed further developed already and I prefer this 2005. It's really good to drink now, but may still improve a little over the next couple of years, drink until 2022 I'd guess.
89-90 points, very good QPR for €14 en primeur.

Not much has changed in the four months since I last tried a bottle. From a 375 with oven roasted salmon. Dark fruit on the nose, the palate is dark fruit, red meat, a little wood and a touch of spice. Decent finish. All said and done I have had much worse wine for a lot more money. Good QPR in my book.

For whatever reason, I enjoyed this bottle (375ml) better than the one from a few months ago. Objectively though, while it seemed to have a bit more depth of fruit this time around on the mid-palate, it remains a bit clipped on the finish.

Pleasant bottle of wine out of a 375. Good mid-palate with some spice and cedar over medium-bodied fruit. The finish seems to be clipped with a touch of alcohol heat

Similar to last note. Big and bold, deep purple on the pour and almost black in the glass. Full bodied and intense. Used Airvana to aerate and rich black fruits were well represented. I have noticed that many well structured 2005 Bordeaux are only now coming to a good drinking phase after 12 years. Tannin are well behaved but noticeable on the finish. Can probably develop for a few more years but at a good drinking stage now. 90+

A serious wine, lively colour, a mix of fresh fruit with the '05 hallmark (lovely acidity) and the other hallmark (lots of ripe tannins), juicy, round, smooth, never dull due to the ripe acidity in the backbone. In the finish I noticed a bit heat (even at 15-16°).

from 375. Drank alongside a Chateau La Prade of the same vintage. Unlike previous comparisons, this time this bottle showed more aromatically than is counterpart. The tannins are just a bit coarse. This showing was promising for further development. 89-90ish

Popped and poured; consumed over three hours. Aromas of crunchy red fruit and a touch of funk that whet the palate. Surprising life in this. Red currants, sous bois, mushrooms. Never really fell off throughout the night. Lovely stuff here. Drink now.

A big wine, quite intense, bold, full body, dark fruits, licorice, olive and mild earth. Dry and with mild tannic finish. Actually has some Pomerol characteristic. Good now but will be better in a few more years. Nice surprise and suggest having with food at this stage.

I agree with TC FROM SANTEE. A nice right bank merlot that is drinking well now. I let it breath an hour before tasting and it was very nice. Day 2 was very good too. It still has some legs but this is my last bottle.

Deep dark, red rimmed, aging well, These 2005 Bordeaux Merlots based wines are just hitting there drinkability. Dark Cherry, dark fruit, tannins easing up and acid is in good balance. I would drink another bottle if I had one. it will improve over the next 6 - 8 years. 05 was a good year for Bordeaux.

From 375 after opening a corked bottle in the same format: Tannins are more in balance than several years ago.....though there is still ample structure Not particularly expressive on the nose or palate...still drinking fairly young....if a bit mundane.....very Merlot with dark fruit and vague hints of emerging complexity

Decent nose. A bit of sediment in the bottle. Opened, decanted and pored. Could have used a couple of hours of aeration. Dry and tannic. This wine is better with food. Do not drink on its own; it's a bit harsh and bitter. End palate of dried black olives. Enjoyable for what it is. Could have been slightly better with the proper decant time.

A lot of variation on the bottles. This one was fairly open: Plum, cassis, cedar and herbs on the nose. Medium weight palate. Nice balance. Very clean and defined, enjoyable.

Deep dark center, red rim with hint of age. Plummy merlot driven fruit, smashed stone, a little toasty, beef reduction. Fairly smooth, cherries and plums, a little spice, black olives, a touch salty, moderate tannin and acid, good length of dark red fruits and toasted herbs. Much better place than the last bottle - variation likely rather than time. The bottle seems like it would improve over the next 4-5 years.

Similar to previous notes, this is a little better than the '03. Very earthy, reminds me of the same kind of grainy texture I get from Reignac. Some nice weight and well balanced with a lovely sweetness to it. Tasted alongside the remnants of some '05 Haut Bages Liberal, the Pauillac showed more poise, precision and delicacy, but the Faizeau still had little to apologize for. Feels like this has peaked now and probably not much need to hold onto it longer.

Open 1 hour: I like the nose a lot, smells of pie cherries, plum, raisin, chocolate, rosemary. Slightly reduced smelling. The fruit and other flavors are evenly distributed on the palate, neither showing more forward than the other. Cherry and dried cranberries, dry soil, tobacco, pencil wood with light graphite, coming off more stony/gravel minerality in the finish. A touch of alcohol warmth on the finish provides a bitter component, reminding me of something herbal. On it's own, it tastes herbal. With food, it's obviously alcohol. Either way, enjoyable. The fruit has really backed off from last time I had this, the secondary flavors are more in the forefront now. Balanced acidity, the tannin is still has a lot of grip, it's neither rough or soft, it's somewhere in between. I like this, it's complex at this price point and enjoyable both on it's own or with food.

This was slammed shut back in June, but it is revealing much more now. Still not as good as upon release and I really don't feel it has the stuffing to be anything worth acquiring in the years to come. Even if it finds it's groove, who wants to store wine for ten years just to drink it at it's peak of mediocrity? Right now, the tannins are almost unbearable The wine looks brick colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Cranberry, Red Currant, Orange, Raisin, and Acacia. It tastes like Dust, Mineral, Stoniness, and Lead Pencil and leather. The body is Light/Medium. The wine has Narrow texture. The wine finishes Short. 4+10+14+6 = 84

It took two days to reach the 89 points. The first impression is a very tight wine with obtrusive tannins and bitterness. The second day the wine had more body and midpalate and the tannnins were softened a bit, still remarkable alcohol. I think that If we will wait another 2-3 years all the components will be integrated to a robust and classy wine.

This bottle was pretty much comatose. Completely shut down and vapid upon opening. I followed a glass over 4 hours and it barely budged. Re-corked and opened again 3 days later and there was definite improvement in bouquet density, but the palate still falls dead flat after a quick dash of dark fruit and earth that gets buried by tannins. Lacking acidity, too. If this actually turns into something enjoyable way down the line, it would be quite the comeback. 4+5+7+3 = 69

From 375. The last bottle was corked and oxidized. This bottle was not so visibly flawed but was subdued on the nose and palate. Couldn't tell if it was just closed down a bit, or if it was very mildly corked (or both). In any case it, what it was offering wasn't bad, it just wasn't showing much of it.

Didn't take notes. Decanted for 2 hours and the wine opened up well. Relatively modern style. Good fruit, minerals. Not complex but very enjoyable. Drinking very well considering it's youth and the strong vintage. I don't think this will be a real long-term ager and may peak in the next year or two.

Served from a half-bottle. The wine was dark purple in colour. I poured it into a decanter and had the first glass right away. The wine offered an interesting nose, with raw meat, cabbage, soy sauce and Worcester sauce. On the palate the wine was quite tannic upon opening, and, after some aeration, showed black currant, bell pepper, coffee and dry tannins. I will wait two to three years before opening the next bottle.

Decanted for about 2 hours. Wow! This wine has really blossomed in the past 2-1/2 years, since I had the first bottle. Plums, licorice, and chocolate (??) aromas. Nice mid-palate with great presence of red and black fruit, black cherry, cedar, and vanilla. Very juicy with refreshing acidity. There is no hint of 14.5 % ABV, to which I'm normally very sensitive. Glad now that I got a case. Bigtime QPR at $16. This wine could even pick up another 1-2 points in the next 5 years.

So tannic... very sweet-tart-like on the nose, full-bodied but seems heavy at this point. I'm not sure where this is headed. I'm inclined to drink them sooner than later, and perhaps save one or two just to see how they pan out in another five years. But right now this is not fun to drink.

from 375. Double decanted, then drank after about an hour and a half Still plenty of tannins dominate....nice underlying fruit. The remainder of the bottle went into the fridge for two days. While having lost a bit aromatically and in terms of freshness, the tannins were in better balance with the fruit.

The nose opens with bright Merlot notes of plums, kirsch, licorice, toast, herbs, and pulverized minerals. Youthful and endowed with a full body, showy, ripe cherry and plum fruit flavors, a tannic spine, tart acidity, and crushed rocks on the finish. Decant or lay down for a couple of years.

Decanted for several hours, and it was much better for it, as it improved and fleshed out significantly. Still firmly tannic, but the fruit that lurked beneath was delicious. I would hold off drinking this for at least a few more years.

90 points on day 2 that is; delicious with quite a complex nose of kirsch, pencil and dark fruit. on day 1 it was ok but stayed rather "closed" on the nose; definitely st emilion on the palate; will benefit from a few more years in the cellar (3-5?), but if you are really in a hurry give it lots of air, half a day or more. a very good example of a lesser known St Emilion. very good and may even merit a higher score in a few years.

This manages to be both fresh and plodding at the same time. I imagine it just needs a few more years for the tannins to integrate which should be no problem since it has plenty of fruit and good acidity. Stewed cherries, kirsch, cream, pencil, mint, cedar, liquorice and black pepper. Better on day two and more complex than expected.

Good solid wine and an excellent QPR. Burgundy color with a blue tint in the center, salmon hint on the rim. Aggressive nose with spice, camphor, and cedar. Nicely balanced taste. Plum, berry fruit on the start which builds in intensity to a woody and slightly floral middle. Very much a plateau, not a peak in the center. Finish is a little gritty and acidic. A deep breath after a taste tickles the throat with an aromatic, almost chemical quality. The finish is a bit chunky for me with the tannins not smoothed out as I would like. Very solid wine in the 89/90 range. Much better than some bottles twice its price.

When I tasted this wine (decanted from bottle to bottle and reverse) yesterday, I gave it 87 points. The wine was gentle with some ripeness, of course a deep and lively colour; in fact an already enjoyable wine. Today, after a night in the fridge, the wine showed, to my surprise, more structure, more concentration and a better backbone. The conclusion? Give this wine enough air and enjoy this wine the next 5 years.

Aired overnight in bottle. Dark violet, 95% saturated. Nose provides good berry concentration over lighter floral scents, but somewhat small and timid. Body is big and more luscious than 5 months ago. Tannins are in good balance but the acidity is soft and the alcohol is still distracting to me. Quite enjoyable with food but don't ask too much from it otherwise. 5+10+15+7 = 87

First night after a 1 hr decant - not approachable. No fruit, only tannins and heat. Second night - MUCH better. Cherry cola, mint, and a hint of chocolate on the nose. Tannins are still very firm - almost chalky. Dark cherries balance out the tannin and heat. Pretty nice stuff if you're patient.

Needs more time than the 05 Cap de Faugeres, tannins seem to gain intensity with aeration. Gobs of dark chocolate and espresso - what I love most about this wine is its lip-smacking acidity. At 14.5% alc, it's not noticeable. I'll keep hands off my final 4 for another 5 years.

My first '05 Bdx. Like others mention, it takes a lot of airtime to balance out. I gave it overnight because it was just very tannic and aggressive for several hours. 2nd day is much nicer. Very dark purple, almost 100% opaque. Medium intense nose is full of currant, perfume, light oak, and alcohol. Big body and mouthfeel with a nice balance of ripe fruit and smoky oak but again, the (14.5%!) alcohol feels more Paso than Euro. There is some delicacy and nuance with a hint of unique terroir, but I don't find much to call "French" about it. I'm sure it will improve with a little more time but I don't think it will ever turn on the little light in my head that makes me think, "Wow, this is what '05 Bdx is all about" (5+10+16+7) = 88
Popped and poured. This could have used a decant, as it improved immensely after an hour. Great balance. Lush and smooth without being overripe. No noticeable oak. Drinking great right now.

popped, drank one small glass, then stoppered and returned to the cellar. night 2. expressive nose alive with red fruits, but not much in the way of leather, pencil, etc. The palate is again very fruit forward, with tannins still active from front to finish. The finish is slightly bitter, but not quite what it was a year or so ago. Overall pleased with this bottle and should be drinking well in another couple years. VGOOD

decanted all day nose - wet wood, coffee liqueur, char. Expecting an oak bomb to follow mouth - heavily extracted. Ultraripe dark cherry on the attack and almost porty on the midpalate, followed by coarse copious tannins. Hints of oak on the finish, and lingering flavors of cherry lifesaver which i quite like. This wine is a beast and disjointed, should sit in bottle for plenty a while. It seems overdone on several aspects - overoaked, overextracted, overripe - which ironically give it some balance. This could prove to be interesting in the future and i could see how it would have both its fans and detractors.

Very nice Bordeaux brought by a friend at our party. Couldn't take notes but Tarrant's notes below is what I remember. Decanted for several hours, tasting along as it aired. Initially, lots of fruit aromas and flavor. Later, more wood and smoke. The tannins increased, the longer that it breathed. Also, yes, very bitter on the finish, which is quite long. Hard to tell where this will go in the next couple of years. The 14.5 alcohol also comes through, unusual for a Bord. I'm not a big fan of this wine in its current stage, but it could be nice in a few years. I'd like score it higher, but it only strikes me as about 87 right now. I've still got 11 bottles, so I'm hopeful.

First taste of '05 Bdx. Thought a right banker might be a little more approachable....Wrong. Ripping tannin right out of the bottle, this is a savage. Nose of potato au gratin blanketing over smoke and some identifiable right bank character. Quite a lot of fruit comes through when things calm down. Palate: acid on the front gives the wine nice weight, but as soon as it moves through the tannin just dominates. The finish, lasts minutes and in addition to a ton of tannin is the tiniest bit bitter and slightly hot. Overall a med body wine that should come together nicely. I'm intrigued.

Popped and poured. Dark ruby in the glass. Bouquet of smoke and dark fruit. In the mouth, full-bodied with dark fruit, smoke and some earth. Endowed with plenty of heat, mouth-coating tannins and really high acidity. This wine is complex, layered and with a very lengthy finish. Consumed the remainder of the bottle 24 hrs after opening and detected flavor degradation; long-term aging (anything beyond 5 years) questionable. Still, a real bargain for 05 Bordeaux.

Nose has cassis, mint, black cherry, and some dark berries. a little subdued. In the mouth the wine tastes much darker with black fruit, licorice and tar. mint on the middle and finish is bitter with tannins. I little tough to enjoy, but with a few more years I think this will come around nicely to show the fruit a bit better and the alcohol calms down a bit. mint again on the finish--very interesting. One of my faves from the 05 Bordeaux value tasting. This wine needs about 45 minutes in the decanter to open up (and come to temperature) and it is really firing. Clean, bright merlot driven fruit, with nice minerality and truffled earthiness on the nose. I call it Baby Jesus Pavie.

This has some wow type aromatics. Nice ripeness showing good complexity. Earthy leathery elements and a bit of herbaceousnees. Spice comes through which seems to be from the oak. Popped and poured with a short wait in the glass. Dark, dark ruby color. Subdued but plump nose of dark fruit. Fruit is pretty tight but works well with the assertive tannins which seem a little bitter at the end but provide an overall nice mouthfeel to the finish. One could argue that it is too early to drink this wine as it is very tannic. Second day: Wine has calmed down a bit and is now revealing a little corkiness. Suspicious looking cork has black fissures in the wine end.

three bottles consumed over about 4-5 months. well balanced, with aging potential. moderately expressive nose....mid palate a touch hollow, lingering finish for a wine of this class. after breathing, tannins begin to clamp down on the finish. Consumed over 3 nights. Never really seemed completely open. Day 1 showed some concentrated, though somewhat muted dark fruits, and plenty of tannin. Day 2 pitted this pup against a '98 Pavie and a '70 Mouton, which really accentuated this wine's youth and breeding. The young Faizeau seemed very new world in comparison with a coconutty oak component that did not show the first night. Day 3 didn't show much of a change, but I could clearly see that this wine's charms are better observed when not in the company of classified growths with any age. All in all, a solid value wine that will improve with some near-term cellar time.

The nose seemed even more expressive upon opening than the first bottle but has calmed down into basically the same impression. Semi-sweet oak, maybe some cedar as well. Once again, other things that I can’t place. Herbal? Mint? In the mouth, savory tannins and a dry mouth-coating finish. Nice acidity level that is well integrated with tannin and dark fruit flavors.

Dark ruby-purple color. Starts off fairly austere but begins to open up well into the second glass, but not much. It begins to reveal just enough juicy black fruit to catch the attention. Just enough barely sweet black fruit sneaks in before dusty and grippy tannins take over and move way up into the gums. It is hard to believe that this is 100% Merlot. This wine has some aging potential. Friday night: Powerful, brooding nose with slight alcohol but also notes of other things that I can’t place. This wine has ended up where the Chappellet 2005 Mountain Cuvee starts off, that is, with an assertive, full bodied tannic bite that is well integrated with the dark fruit flavors. Fruit has opened up with juicy, slightly sweet flavors. Rich, dry, and lingering finish. This is the first Bordeaux to which I have had such a positive reaction. This wine could probably evolve with time but I don’t think I would mind drinking more of this while it is in its current state. I really like this wine. 91 points.

Decanted two hours before serving. Initial nose full of yoghurt and crisp cherryfruit. Later also lavender, oak and some alcoholic heat. On the palate full, intense, but not jammy or overripe. Instead notes of oak, mocha, ripe forest fruit, coffee, oak, mint and a bit smokey. Ripe tannins along the way. Long, looong finish, with some alcoholic heat (14.5%!). A 'muscle wine'. This Faïzeau needs at least 3-5 more years to settle down. Plenty of potential and material, now it's time to find the balance. But even now....Superb! 91+/100

Still tight after 2 hours. Clear, ruby color. Clean, medium intensity aromas of fresh berries, cassis, tea, cocoa, smoke and minerals. Medium acidity, medium plus tannin, medium body. Flavors match aromas. Medium finish. This wine has a lot of room to improve with 2-4 years of bottle age.

Of the "value" wines I've purchased from the 2005 vintage, this is the most impressive. I imagine that is because this is a bunch of ripe merlot with a nice bit of alcohol while the others have some Cabernet that needs time to shine. Rich, ripe fruit, but definitely Bordeaux merlot. The alcohol and the roundness of the tannin make it drink well now, though I'm thinking the best will be in another 5 to 10 years.

Consumed over 2 evenings and not surprisingly a little better on day 2. Nicely balanced flavors of creamy cassis, mineral, black stone fruit and smoke. Sharp, fine tannins carry the finish of this meduim-bodied wine. A nice value.

It's hard to tell what this wine is really like. It is a little tight right now. Decanted and it was much better after about 30 mins, but it crashed fast and was very flat after another 30 min. Try it again in 2009.

Really enjoyable bottle and the best inexpensive 05 bdx Ive had yet. Has a nice balance between fruit without leaving bordeaux. Plenty of grip but not unapproachable right now, this will last mid-term though. Good buy at under $20.

2005 Bordeaux (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Earthy aromas of wet tobacco leaf and dark cherry. A layered palate of cassis, dark cherry, and smoke. Sweet tannins. Begins with a good degree of depth, but the finish tapers off rather quickly. 86-87 points. RP90-92, WS90.

Some nice weight and well balanced with a lovely sweetness to it. Tasted alongside the remnants of some '05 Haut Bages Liberal, the Pauillac showed more poise, precision and delicacy, but the Faizeau still had little to apologize for.

Even if it finds it's groove, who wants to store wine for ten years just to drink it at it's peak of mediocrity? Right now, the tannins are almost unbearable
The wine looks brick colored.

Today, after a night in the fridge, the wine showed, to my surprise, more structure, more
concentration and a better backbone. The conclusion? Give this wine enough air and enjoy this
wine the next 5 years.

I'm sure it will improve with a little more time but I don't think it will ever turn on the little light in my head that makes me think, "Wow, this is what '05 Bdx is all about" (5+10+16+7) = 88

nose - wet wood, coffee liqueur, char. Expecting an oak bomb to follow
mouth - heavily extracted.

Very dark, well concentrated wtih a nose of plum, black fruit, cigar box, spice and vanilla, nicely structured/balanced, smooth on the finish with very nice length. I'd like to find this one if its reasonable.
