A lovely Champagne served out of magnum and it's very '06 in its soft texture and nice complexity. For my tastes though, it lacks verve and intensity which is typical of the vintage.

Collectable Wine Night (Tuscany Steakhouse NYC): The last of 4 bottles I purchased and I'm sad to see them all gone, as loved each bottle. As soon as the bottle was open a heady yeasty bread aroma was evident. Just a glorious champagne. A long finish and great golden color.

Time has been kind to this one. Rich, round and supple, this is drinking beautifully. Fresh and zippy, but with notes of creme brulee, brioche and caramel. Some apple and candied lime zest in the background gives this great depth. A long, elegant finish, that leaves you wanting another sip and then another glass.

Tone’s 75th Birthday Bash: this had more spice character than the youthful 2010 Dom Ruinart tasted alongside. Bruised apple, cinnamon and other baking spices; much richer style with more complexity than the DR. Haven’t had a Sir Winston since the ‘95. What a treat. Thanks Wayne!!! 94+

94-95 points- This was a stark contrast to the ethereal 2010 Dom Ruinart but this is hitting a sweet spot with yellow apple, baking spice, butterscotch and vanilla. Ample and notably “wide” in the mouth, great length and vinous character. The bubbles are still holding up on this particular bottle, too. A real treat. More of a baritone Champagne today.

Initially a fairly simple (albeit rich) champagne, air transformed this into something broader and much more complex. Though endowed with ample pinot- and lees- driven flavors, my bottle was surprisingly youthful and bright, with only a few hints of mature unami notes peeking through. But as much as I enjoyed this, I find the price it commands impossible to justify; in fact it reminded me most of an early 2010s Roederer Estate (that’s the California outpost) L’Ermitage that I had recently.

This wine is now ready. It is clear that 2006 is not a great vintage in champagne (similar to 2004). I find top notch wines to struggle to move past their prime in this vintage. I had it blind. At first, very sweet lemon and some flowers, almost unbalanced with not enough acidity. Then it opened up and developed some burnt sugar and a bit of curd. Overall disappointing given the great name. I would not buy this vintage for this expensive bottle.
Light gold color. Split bottle over 2.5 hours. This was a total head turner. Amazing nose, mindful of a recent bottle of '04 Dom Ruinart BdB; just stunning with it's glorious sea breezes, such wistful minerality dancing across the olfactory senses, brioche, pastry cream, dulce de leche, apple, apple peel and almond. The palate is delightfully harmonious with a strong bead of fine bubbles, creamy texture, nougat, delicate almond cream, lemon, chalk, green apple, pear, confit lemon, apple peel and orange peel with a long nutty finish. So long, so vibrant, just crazy good and elegant. 96+pts.

Out of magnum. Decanted in a champagne decanter for an hour then drank over another hour with some guests. Light golden color, active bubbles. Maybe I’m not a fan of the 06 vintage in Champagne but I felt all champagnes from that vintage are more citrusy than typical. Some brioche, honeyed apples, good complexity, some chalk on the finish. A good champagne which I would love to try in another vintage like 02 or 08. To be continued…

Pale gold. Fresh and bright, notes of Macintosh apple, baking spices, toasted brioche, and buttercream. It’s medium bodied and the freshness comes through in the palate as well. It’s got a great finish. Pure elegance that will reward some more bottle age (10+ years).

An outdoor dinner, and we drank this out of white wine glasses. It went great with the Oysters, Duck and Cornish Hen. I don't drink a lot of Champagne, but I loved this.
Side by side with the lovely and well evolved 2000 ( Papies 91-92) and a year and a half since we tried this last ( Papies 92) this continues along the path and albeit of the super cuvées out there this is not our favourite it does paint a smile on our faces when we have this. Definitely a rounder and richer style of champagne, vinous and juicy in a way, autolitic and yeasty brioche feel. Very good. 92+

I agree with all of the high scores! This really compelled me, and one of my best wines for 2020. I dropped entire family and college roommates off at ikea to buy furniture. Then my Waze took me on a wild goose chase, that stopped me and my camper at a dentist's office, and later an AT&T office in Charlotte. I finally arrived and saw this and said what the heck. Well, I cooled it and Julie and I had it at the campground later. Wow, this was crisp and tart, bubbly, rich and full. I notice the mineral, and sweet stones perceptions, even before the fruit. Then comes the lovely white stone fruit, followed by pistachio, and wild flower, and honey. This drank and swallowed so well, I loved it!

I drank this bottle on the day I buried my mother. On the day our foster son celebrated his 8th birthday. During the horrible Covid-19 pandemic. All my emotions were intensified by this glorious champagne. Though far from the epic 2002, this was a magnificent champagne.
Rest in peace my beloved mother. Happy birthday my son.
This is the second to best (which was the 2002). The 2006 is ready although it could be saved for additional years. It is still primary and it has not developed yet the classic Winston Churchill complex character. Just a tad toward that goal.

Drank side-by-side with a 98 P2, and I preferred this. Lovely rich champagne, with well-proportioned coffee, and brioche, complemented by orchard fruit and vanilla. On the palate, excellent acidity and weight. Fine bubbles lift the flavors, which are still, not unexpectedly, very primary. More orchard fruit and texture suggesting some honeyed density. Soft nousse, and very compelling. Wait at least 5 years on the next bottle.

Spectator Winemaker's Lunch in the Spectator boardroom (Westminster) led by James Simpson MW. Only noted wines I've not already commented on. Foaming assertive mousse. Hints of both dark and aromatic white cherry core fruit, steely mineral core with lime zest nuances and a clean pectic acidity to finish bringing the ripe fruit into balance. Long. At the start of its plateau, and for drinking for up to 20yrs from vintage or so.

Had this alongside two other champagnes, Selosse Initial andTaittinger – Comtes de Champagne 2006. We had them out of narrow white wine glasses, as opposed to champagne flutes. The Winston Churchill was the darkest of the three, and my favorite. It also held its bubbles longer than the other two.

Wow!

Tasted blind - An assertive array of red berry fruits and muscular leesy toast. Fresh cranberry, ripe lemons, brioche, and mature pears, a ripe vintage? Some oak influence? (Pol Roger doesn’t use oak actually). Full bodied and tense, expansive style with good phenolic ripeness. Pinot Noir dominant (c. 70%?) Dom Perignon 1996/ 2002? A tricky one to guess as 2006 is so approachable already. (94/100)

Two very consistent bottles. We tend to like this cuvee on the younger side, with more freshness and energy as when it ages past a point it loses its focus. And so with this 2006s we believe are in the right spot, maybe with 1-2 years more of top life for us but still very solid now. Lovely rich feel offsets the bright and fresh side, lots of depth of flavor but also subtle and elegant, Very solid 92

Nose is round and full bodied. Balanced but yet complex in its concentration. There is consensus around the table that if you take everything good in the other wines tonight and leave out everything unbalanced og strange, you can distill it into this wine. Not showing off in any way. Subtle, gentle, comfortable and oh, so young. The palate follows the nose hand in hand with yellow apples, mushrooms, red fruits, toast, and a myriad of other small individual components adding on to an impressive whole. WOTN without a doubt for me. Perfectly balanced and never ending finish which continues giving pleasure long after the bottle is empty. 50+5+13+17+9 (94p)

Dense and rich, better mousse than ‘04 Krug or Bollinger RD, red apple. Darker overall. Always very flavourful. This was definitely superior to the ‘04 from a week ago.

Brioche, toasted bread, baked honey almond, and roasted walnut on the nose, on the palate, it was ripe and powerful, citrus pie, honey tea, lemon cream, and baked nuts, the finish was dense but not super long and slightly on the sweeter end, it seems still young to enjoy considering 2006 is a great vintage, think this can be a better wine when getting more mature.

Certainly needs a lot of time, I do not find it very forgiving right now. Very linear. Some biscuit, nuts and peach/pear fruits, but all tightly wound, and not real expressive yet. Will certainly round out with some time.

IMW 2018 Champagne - Prestige Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): $299, Pol Roger is cagey about the details. All grand cru fruit. Their vintage wine is 60-40 Pinot-Chard. Pale straw color. Awesome nose driven by developed lees - a different beast. Toasty developed brioche bordering on coffee and vinous burnt caramel / madeira, but shot through with bright freshness - toasted lemon marshmallow? Artisanal caramel apple? Rich palate - developed autolytic notes, superbly integrated texture. I'm guessing given the sweetness added by riper fruit and developed autolysis this is only 4-5g dosage (actually 8g/L and full malo!), though it tastes 8-9. Acid impact is lower but still properly high - it's just balanced by the lees and fruit impact.

An Afternoon in LI w/Friends (Champagne Reception, Syrah from Afar) (Long Island): Good solid standard champagne. It's toasty and nutty and a bit buttery. I didn't get the same oxidative notes that the previous note had. Some decent acidity. Have heard these don't age as well as you'd hope, but this seemed like it could do with a bit of time.

Far more oxidative than expected. Bruised apples, slightly smokey (?!), almond, some lemon zest, but a bit light on bready/yeasty notes. Disappointing bottle

Still very youthful and tight nose that need time in the glass to open up to show minerals, citrus and some red apples in a very pleasant way. Palate shows a lovely intensity with mandarin citrus notes, minerals and a lengthy finish showing stone fruit and some mint chocolate. Showing more tropical notes from the warmer year, but still enough acidity and power to reward further cellaring to really open up... (Best 2026-2041)

Halpern Enterprises Portfolio Tasting (2017): I've never really loved this wine from any vintage. Often I find it too sulfur laden. Not so today. This time it had an odd fruit profile; bruised apple, tinned peach, poached pear. The palate repeats these unusual notes. Still not a fan, at any price point.

Deep straw yellow colour with fine and delicate bubbles. Brioche, dried apricots, peaches, fresh flowers and cinnamon on the nose. Taste of honey, liquorice and wood with a hint of pepper. Good acidity. An elegant long and dry finish with a hint of ripe fruits. A superb Champagne that will work as a fantastic aperitif or go well with dishes with fish, shellfish or light meat.

A very good heavy champagne. Amazing Pinot really creating lots of depth and complexity already now. Creamy bubbles, quite fresh still. Hold.

I am not a fan of 06 champagne as it can be a touch too ripe. Nevertheless the nose was beautiful.

Fantastic Champagne!
Extremely aromatic with toasty brioche nose with grapefruit, quince and apricot on the palate.
Fresh and energetic.
It certainly can age longer but why wait?

Tasted vertical of 02, 04, 06 and 08. Finished last in the group. Muted on the nose...slightly 'dumb' on the palate. Overshadowed by the other wines.

Creamy brioche with pear, peaches and nectarine. Bit of limestone, chalk and flint.
Don't have that much champagne experience but this is better than the 06 Dom, but... it's also 100 dollars more.
I'm impressed at how well it's drinking now though.

A bit muted in the beginning, but opened up after a while. Rather coarse and astringent on the palate, with a dry finish. Extremely powerful. Needs cellaring.

IMW 2018 Champagne - Prestige Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): $299,
Pol Roger is cagey about the details.
