Off the list at Zero Otto Nuove in nyc. The most basic of the wines and yet still wonderful. Light and elegant and pretty. Drank with some friends who are less wine obsessed and they really enjoyed it as well.

Something was off with this bottle but it wasn't flawed, just really tired. Didn't have the bright fruit core that others noted. Underbrush, balsamic, mushroom was there, but very little fruit at all. I was a little surprised because this should be alive and well. Guessing it had previously been stored poorly at some point in its life. Not gonna give it an official score but would have been mid 80s.

Explosive nose of black fruit and roses. Tannins were very present at first and calmed down with an hour of air. Very fine acidity, notes of scorched meat, seductive fruit, excellent length. Open for business and might even improve with a couple more years.

Nice bottle tonight. Decanted for sediment, poured with burgers at the club. Relatively bright core, tiny bricking at the edges. Really pretty nose of rose petal. Bright red fruit on the palate, wonderfully mouth watering cherries with plenty of acidity. Lovely now, no need to wait (or rush either).

Garnet color, no bricking. Explosive aromas of dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, tar and earth. This really saturates the palate with waves of flavor. It strikes a good balance between tart acidity and firm tannins. A lovely wine, still firing on all cylinders.

750ml stood for weeks, slow ox for 1 hr, then decanted and served with braised short rib pizza (!). When in its perfect window, it was beyond delightful: ethereal, pretty, floral, complex mouthwatering light red fruit. No surprise that early on it showed young and tight. What did surprise me was how quickly it became astringent and closed (after less than an hour). I love tannins as much as anyone but, these didn't suit up super well in the beginning, or for the end of the evening. Slightly disappointed, given cost/high expectations.

Really good showing. Smells so floral and pretty, so very Giacosa. Juicy fruit with the trademark Giacosa purity and lovely high notes. The sides are just beginning to soften, while the core remains red cherry fruit. This is so pretty, yet has solid underlying structure. Has impressive depth to the palate, yet is rather nimble on the palate. Thankfully, this is really good and pure, unlike the heat damaged bottles I had of this years ago. Very solid showing. Will age gracefully for many years to come. Thanks, Sarah. At Marta, NYC.

Nebbiolo Night + a solo sneaky Brunello (Extra Space): Bottle in excellent condition. Pop and poured. Drank from bottle over 3 hours. Appearance is clear, pale intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with a lovely bouquet of violets and roses, smoke, tar, and soy sauce. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), dry puckery high tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, soy sauce, tar, and earth. Sweet and savoury. Long finish. Great balance and somewhat feminine character despite the high tannins. Traditional style. Outstanding quality. Drinking well now, lots of life here and feels like it could still develop for another 5+ more years.

Mature in color and on the nose, this has solid fruit and very good complexity for the price. Drank well out of the bottle, and improved with about 30 minutes of air. If you don't mind some noticeable tannin on the finish I would drink now as I am uncertain about the fruit/tannin balance over the long run - but I may be wrong given it is Giacosa. A-

This shows a core of what I would want in Barbaresco: red fruit, roses and tar. But there is an annoying burnt note, and I suspect that this may have seen heat damage before it landed in my cellar. Bought years ago from JJB. Not much better overnight.

Un souvenir rapporté de la région en 2005. Le nez mentholé (pâte à dents!) évoque bien la région, ainsi que ses arômes anisés, de raisin secs. Une bouche austère, intrigante, mais élégante et fine. To start, open, fleshy, plenty of fruit. With 30 minutes of air this started to close a bit, and show the tannic side. Unclear if more time will help or hurt - depending on how the fruit will hold up. I would opt for drinking on the early side. B+/A-

Sometime, I might have to drink some Giacosa wines blind to see if my robust enjoyment of them will be the same without the backstory and reputation. But we both worked so hard -- me to develop my backstory and the winery to develop its reputation. Why should I aim to strip that away before enjoying the wine?
I liked this wine.

Light cherry cola; Haunting nose - a melange of nutty, sherry notes initially, then anise, sweet cinnamon, baking spices, tobacco, damp leaves; Less excitement on the palate but with a dry, pleasant, red berry, smoky essence with medium length on the finish. Elegant silky mouthfeel with balanced acidity. But its all in the nose!!!

Decanted an hour or so. Brick, light edges. Reluctant nose of strawberry, rhubarb and cinnamon. Expanding on the platte, nuts and sherry. After more time in glass the oxidative character became more pronounced. Acid and tannin kicked in. Not drinkable. Cork was fine. Don't know what was going on with this bottle. Just acquired it, provenance unknown. Very disappointing.

Wow this was really amazing. Decanted throughout a meal of osso buco, italian sausage garganelli and burrata with foie gras terrine. Fantastic nose of roses, tar, earth and tobacco with red fruits permeating throughout. Palate was equally good, creamy, good acidity and bitingly dry. Impressive cherry and strawberry fruit. Darkish red with slightly brown edges but in no danger of fading, this wine only improved over the 2 hour dinner. Agree with previous poster there was a bit of a funk at first with oxidized smell but it blew off, could be a provenance issue. Bordeaux-like flavors & nose with the weight of a Pinot. Stunning.

Very mature color, towards brick/rustiness. Big nose, lots of smoke initially, evolving into tar, something cherry-ish. Quite closely knit from the start, but evolved beautifully for an hour or two. Complex and stringent, very nice, indeed. Was not floored, but then again my expectations probably were too high when drinking from the master's hand. May hav been in a closed phase. Will wait a few years before I pop the next bottle.

The first glass was excellent, but in advance I had decided to decant the bottle for hours. After six hours it became very good. Rather fat but with surprisingly nice and well rounded tannins. Not all that much primary fruit, but no hints of development. All in all a very good wine, but I have a feeling that I should have waited at least five to twenty more years.

After a couple hours in the decanter, this starts to spread its wings a bit. Elegant nose of roses, truffles, fall leaves and tar, with maybe a hint of balsamico. Unfurls layer after layer in the mouth, with bright red fruit, mushrooms, tar, truffles and a full floral component. Underneath the brisk acidity and slightly softened tannins knit a structure together with loam and fall leaves, along with some more balsamico. The slight oxidative/balsamic note seems premature for this wine, particularly because of how youthful everything else is - purchased at retail recently, so provenance is a question. It may have seen some heat. That said, still outstanding, and a phenomenal pairing with mushroom pasta and skirt steak.

My overall impression is that while this might not be a great nebbiolo, the shape of this wine is just about perfect. Truffles and tar with a balsamic note; after air, a lot of roses. Lithe on the palate with brilliant acidity and some tannic structure which could stand to be resolved. Very long finish. There are a lot of nits I could pick with this, it isn't the most complex nebbiolo, and it's hardly a bargain at the price I paid, but this wine is pretty brilliant.

I thought this wine was a bit too light on the palate. Not sure if all Barbaresco taste this way. I'm going to give a second try tomorrow. The initial decant time was 5 hours and still had an astringent overtone.

Popped, decanted and poured, then drunk over 3 hours. This was a wonderful wine that evolved and danced through all the great flovors you get from a good quality nebbiolo. It started as bright fruit, a mixture of cherry and berry, as it aired, there was a wave of truffles, wild mushrooms and earthy herbs. The evolution then brought on more classic nebbiolo flavors like some light creosote, but there was just a whiff because all the other flavors were still there. Overall, this was an outstanding. It ws an interestingc omaprison to the 2000 Scavino Bric del Fiasc that we drank side by side. The Scavino started out a bit creamier while this had more electric sharpness and elegance. Overall, the individual flavors were very similar, but they presented themselves differently.

Rich and energetic and fresh. Dusty nose with menthol, tar and violets. Youthful in the mouth with a lot of tannin and fairly bright acidity. Harmonious despite the structure. Pretty damned tasty but needs either a longer decant or, more realistically, 5 more years.

Wondeful wine. Nose of dark cherries and very mineral. More tar after a while. The fruit is very good, on the sweet side without this being a drawback. Prominent tannins and a very long aftertaste shouldl make this a wine that will keep for a long time.

Wonderful nose of earth, dark cherries, beef-blood and mushroom. Closed in at first but after an hour and half in decanter the fruit bloomed beautiful, and in balance with the tannins. This is still young but drinking very nicely indeed once aired.

Dinner and Wine (Casa Pelz): What can I say? Bruno Giacosa is a genius. This wine was very interesting in so many ways...Opened a few hours before consumption and audouzed in the cellar. Color was looking like that of a much older wine with definite rustiness and orange bricking. The nose was phenomenal and showed some very nice red to black fruit with loads of tobacco and leather. Texture was good and silky. Surprisingly, the finish was pretty tannic, and gave the impression that the wine was much younger than it looked.

Pale to medium depth, brick colour. Beautiful aromas of raspberries and sweet red fruit with hints of licorice on the nose. Dry, medium bodied with strong, tannic - but excellent taste with long finish. Opened considerably during the evening; this wine will develop nicely during the next years and become even better. A great, classic barbaresco.

on day one-opened with a nice floral nose and a touch of alcohol. had a nice nip of acid and some smooth tannins with a lingering finish. probably a 89. on day two,we'll ya either got it or ya don't- she's got it. a similar profile to yesterday- more floral nose, less alcohol. light feel in the mough with very fine grained tannins. long wonderful finish. A very femine wine ,I think. Talk about greater than the sum of it's parts-no one aspect stood out or got me excited but I couldn't put my glass down. I just sat there with a smile on my face. WOW, I can imagine what some of the single vineyard's will be like in a few year. shhh we'll let them sleep.

Pretty damned tasty but needs either a longer decant or, more realistically, 5 more years.

not blind for me, my offering. Rich red fruits, smoke, leather. Decanted a few hours, but still showing some tannins. Still young but with a sense of elegance. B+/A-

Such an interesting contrast -- incredibly firm tannic structure, yet a delicate texture and perfumy flavors... a wonderful expression of Nebbiolo with no apologies for being traditional. Delicious.

Massive nose that jumped out of the glass. Classic notes of tar, roses and earth. Taste of bing cherry, roses and spice. Very smooth with silky tannins. Long finish. Gorgeous stuff. Giacosa is the Master.

Light in color, copper tinged on the edge. Fragrant nose, with lilac, earth, cedar and leather. Fresh and crisp on the palate, with sour cherry, pomegranate, cedar and a moderate finish with firm tannins. Very elegant and complex, well structured. Drinks beautifully.

Lean and mean at first. After 6 hours in decanter it has become pretty nice with an open nose and complexity.

Slightly oxidized. Had not been stored properly until this year. Mouthfeel was still okay. Nose and finish were gone.

This may have been a bad bottle. The color was brick brown and the nose was clove and cinnamon.

This bottle was not as good as a previous bottle tasted in December 05. The parts of the wine are all good but the integration wasn't there last night. Tannic but very long, aromatic finish.
