  • Over the hill. Should have drunk it years ago. Still very good wine but not what it was when it was 20.

  • Guy's Night: Open Your Last Bottle (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Very dark red color, 6mm transitional margin. PNP, drank a couple glasses over 3 hours. Drank this next to the '70 Figeac. It was quite a bit bigger and more youthful at this point. But not really as giving, at least for awhile. The nose is reclusive, though it certainly evolves over the first hour plus to show cassis, exotic spices, boysenberry, and touches of blueberry compote. The palate is dark fruited, still dense and full bodied, tart black cherry, black and blue fruits, savory later, wood spice, and a citric note. Soft tannins that linger a bit on the finish. This improved over the 3 hours so there appears to be plenty of life left and maybe some room for improvement. 92+pts.

  • Open your last bottle (Jason and Mariellen's house): Pop and pour, because this wine was a substitute that was opened at the last minute. It took some time to open up and really blossomed around the 1 hour mark. This was easy drinking with friendly red fruit. It was so resolved, complex and integrated. That combination seemed odd to me, but there it is.

  • Guys Night Out - Open your last bottle of something you had multiple bottles of at one time!: PnP - This was a treat being able to drink side by side with a 1970 Figeac! Even though this had slight notes of faded fruit, I enjoyed the Figeac slightly more due to its complexity, i.e., the Figeac just had more going on....both wines were not in my wheelhouse due to the lack of any real fruit (would have loved to taste these about 20 years earlier). Still, it is always a treat to get to taste older wines....I mean how many people get to experience that?

Nose showed some floral notes and some red and dark fruit notes, with dust and bramble notes (I actually like the nose on this wine better than the Figeac). Palate was less remarkable, showed dried fruit, lots of earth and some cedar notes with hints of leather lurking in the background. A decent wine I was happy to taste, but would not even think of purchasing more....about 10-20 years past its prime (IMO). For those who don't care about fruit (or who have a more sensitive palate than I and may taste fruit where I don't), you will enjoy this wine, but I would recommend the Figeac over this one. 89-90 points for my palate.

  • Majestic in nature and character, what initially grabs you is the truffles, smoke, dark cocoa, ripe, plums and cherries on the nose and palate. But it is the incredible concentration and silky tannins with its long, intense, sensuous finish that brings everything here together. At over 50 years of age, it is all about the provenance. If you can find a well-stored bottle, grab it!

  • Wine in its own class. Perfume, sous bois, perfume, red fruit and dark fruit. Despite its 50 year of age, the wine still possesses excellent density and richness with hint of port-like sweetness. It still has more primary character than secondary character. It is youthful and energetic. While I am a fan of old claret, the wine is surely at its prime in my humble view even though I am confident that it can still age. Catch it in a window where the fruit and freshness are still friendly and kind. 93-94

  • Incredible--soft velvety texture and then the depth kicks in. Superb finish, red fruits. Nose was powerful. A lot of minerality, some earth.
This wine is not close to being done.

  • Rich, plummy, silky, lush, showy and fresh, the wine is loaded with truffle, cherry pipe tobacco, cocoa, black and red plums, cherries and wet earth. At full maturity, if you are sitting on any of this gem, you are a lucky wine lover as well-stored examples of this wine are stunning!

  • This was my last bottle....the prior one drunk about 10 years ago was humming, Sadly this one was well into the back nine. Fill was BN and it poured amber at the edge with an amber/ruby center. Still fragrant but advanced aromas of plum, prune, leaves, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Pleasant entry but the mid palate lost steam, and there were still some unresolved tannins that left this a little unbalanced in the finish.

  • Bottled truffles are what this gem reminded me of. Flamboyant, sensuous, opulent and showy, the wine is rich, deep, concentrated and still delivers plenty of chocolate-covered cherries and plums on the nose and palate. Fully developed, this is not a wine I would hold. So, if you own this stunner in your cellar, find someone to share it with and enjoy the ride.

  • The bottle variation in the 70 Trot is dramatic. Served blind, this example showed a pleasant but not profound plummy profile with a bit of iron and earth. Super supple on the palate, but without the depth of the best bottles.

  • The P Wine (Bourbon Steak, Aventura, Florida): Notwithstanding that it’s firm and bound up in its structure, the ‘70 Trotanoy is really very good and quite similar to the Pétrus this year. The sheer intensity of the tense fruit is (almost) a match for the tannins and acidity. While you probably wouldn’t want to sip this outside by the pool, it makes a fine match for charred meat. It could go on like this for years to come.

  • At full maturity, and not quite as flamboyant as the previous bottle tasted last year, still, this is stellar juice! The nose of roses, oyster shell, cigar wrapper, truffle, fudge and dark plums kept you busy. Full-bodied, lush, round and fresh the vibrancy in the cherry and juicy plums hit all the right spots. As the wine approaches 50 years of age, there is no reason to cellar this for more improvement. No decanting was needed.

  • After 2 hours decantation, this dark red claret had a very forward nose with hints of chocolate and dark berries. The body was full with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, and leather. The finish was long and delightful. I purchased this wine around 1976 for $11.95 at Hi-Time wines in Costa Mesa, CA. Ch. Trotanoy never disappoints.

  • Alas, a tight, inexpressive bottle. Quiet nose - plum, game, leather. Rustic tannin. Never really came around.

  • maybe a little past primetime but still a great experience to drink.
Light but not soft. Lots of mushroom and cedar, the fruit was stewed plum, there but not strong.

  • Nose: Red and black fruit, pencil, spice and cigar notes. Bits of black truffle and malty roasted cherries. Palate: Very round in the mouth delivering a wide array of roasted cherry, sweet blueberry, cassis, tobacco, malt, toffee and coffee. Finish: Extremely complete and detailed never letting up. Beautiful smokey malty finish.

We had the unique opportunity to taste this from both 750 and Magnum. More dark fruit and ripe tannin in magnum and you had more time to see the exotic personalty develop. The 750 showed up right from the get go with a payload of plummy cigar, pencil, truffle, cedar and malt tones. Both gorgeous, but the completeness in bottle give it the nod (97+).

  • From magnum; beautiful plummy, dark chocolate, pencil, smokey, slightly gamey, Perigord truffle, ferruginous nose. A little rough and tumble on the palate with slightly coarse tannins but who cares? They're robust and even a little invigorating. Strangely enough, from smaller format (750) it showed even better; more complexity, depth, and vigor. This seemed fully mature in mag format, so probably just bottle variation.

  • Having just had this from magnum, I was surprised to find the 70 Trotanoy so much more explosive from 750. So many of the things I want in mature Pomerol - and in mature wine, generally - in one glass. It's such a special thing when a wine still has terrifically lively fruit by the time complex, tertiary notes evolve. And this is the real deal: big, deep, plummy raspberry base, leather, truffle, cedar, clay, mineral, game (? squab), pencil, smoke. Endlessly interesting and still with a succulent, hedonistic delivery. Brilliant. No doubt at its apogee, but time ahead.

  • Mag purchased from K&L: red fruit with haunting terroir and leather characteristics. The wine seemed to have a little menthol on the nose and was drinking great. Great wine that probably won’t get any better but will hold for a little longer. Why wait though?!?!

  • Acker Auction - June 2018 (Laduree NYC W Broadway): Amazing how nice and fresh this was. Funny because I got a bit of the bell pepper flavor to it which I wasn't expecting since this is Pomerol, but there you have it. Not as many notes on it. Nice wine that was very tasty.

  • Fully mature, the wine shows beautiful, floral, truffle, black cherry, wet earth, plum and black cherry notes. Full-bodied, silky, fresh and loaded with ripe, sweet, dark red, pit fruits with a dash of cocoa are what you find in the finish.

  • Brother Jeff's visit to DC - Mostly Bordeaux (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): From Brother Jeff’s cellar. Splash decant, fresh black fruit and rusty nail, not so expressive. With air, drastic improvement, subtle pure black fruit, strong black truffle, lavender, dark spices, iron and earth. Fully integrated harmonious palate, silky and polished, very finely layered subtle black fruit, perfect amount of acidity, still noticeable slightly coarse tannins and a medium subtle pure black fruit driven finish with strong black truffle at the end. Jim mentioned clipping finish which I agree wholeheartedly. 97 point nose 92 point palate. Despite being stored perfectly, it needs to be drunk sooner than later.

  • 1970s Bordeaux tasting (Wine Watch, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): The wine of the night for me. So complete and elegant. Garnet/ruby color. A beautiful open nose of ripe red plum, truffle, tobacco, iron, and chocolate. So elegant on the palate, you almost didn't even want it to end. And thankfully, there was a long, lingering finish with loads of fresh acidity. Super-silky tannins. Completely balanced. The only question is whether the 70 or 71 Trotanoy is currently the better wine. It would certainly be fun to compare them side-by-side.

  • Mind blowing in every sense of the word, this is a stunner. Rich, supple, decadently textured, silky and well... you get the picture. The fruit is ripe, voluptuous, and complex, with a beautiful truffle essence to top it all off. Fully mature, this is going to be around for a few more decades if well stored.

  • A Decadent Wine Day...Zachy's Vault II and Dinner with special guest CVA and friends (Le Bernardin, New York and Chez Walker in Princeton, NJ): At the Zachy's auction in NYC, from a magnum. First experience with this wine, surprised to the upside given the vintage.

Color was still there, an opaque purple red with some separation at the rim. Bouquet of dark fruits, earth notes, eucalyptus; fragrant and distinct nose. Plate of black cherry, blackberry, earth/forest floor, tobacco, dark chocolate and spices. The baking spices on the mid/back palate very distinct. Silky texture, tannins focused in the mid palate.

Really stood out among some tough competition, wish I had the opportunity to have more...really special wine that's perfectly mature at this point.

  • I mean seriously. 1970 a good but problematic year in pomerol. This particular bottle stood as a shining expression of how great it could be.

We didn't expect much. I got the bottle as a gift a few years ago and it had been standing in my cellar for some time. The label was dirty and the fill questionable. We pulled, popped, decanted and poured in the space of about 8 minutes. And it was...

Nectar. Menthol/eucalyptus ringed with concentrated cherry and maybe a little cola. Those are wine words we all use to sound smart. What I really mean is: direct, focused and balanced. At first cold, so we thought thin. But it opened and became sharp and fragrant, nothing cloying but plenty of sweetness. It made us happy to drink it and sad to see the decanter and our glasses empty. There was nothing left but to go to bed and dream sweet dark red dreams. We awoke next morning and despite the trotanoy being the second bottle of the night (for two of us), felt refreshed and delicious.

  • Jims Large Format Dinner
From Magnum: Elegant, long with a great finish. Nose is all dark fruits, still fresh mixed with earth. Great attack thats rich, ripe and balanced with a nice lengthy finish

Georges Notes: Exotic nose, rich and ripe with dark fruit sweetness, elements of charcoal, charred wood, sweet earthen tones, milk chocolate, and nice aromatic black cherry and blackberry notes; sweet and ripe in the mouth, the first taste is very promising with rich blackberry and cherry flavors; in the mid-mouth the wine begins to take on the character of the vintage at this stage, drying out and showing rather hard acidity and crisp red fruit flavors; there is a bit of a rebound at the finish and the last flavors are sweet with nicely balanced acidity and spices notes. (17.5+)

  • Truffles, truffles and more truffles are in full force before moving to the black cherry, cocoa, forest floor and tobacco part of the experience. Fully mature, but without a rush to pop a cork, provided the bottle has been well stored, the opulent, silky texture and spicy, dark cocoa and sweet plums in the finish really cap it everything off perfectly.

  • No notes at time of consuming (Marcel's DC) - opted not to decant fearing aromatics might "blow off" but were we not mistaken? At an age of 45, this is still so young, fresh, and vibrant it will benefit from air time to unleash its potential. Tons of pleasure in a glass. Drink now or hold.

  • Looking and tasting at least 20 younger than its true age, this rich, deep, concentrated, velvet drenched wine serves up endlss layers of chocolate covered plums, cherries and flowers, with an intriguing smoky quality. Sexy, silky and vibrant, this did not fade at all in the glass over the 2 hours I managed to hold it for. Mature Pomerol at its best.

  • My last bottle. Near perfect provenance and neck fill. SOM'd

Focused, and dense without any sense of heaviness, with more stony fruit than cassis, tobacco, and with more restraint (read "lack of a voluptuous side") that I would have expected. Great focus and depth, terribly easy to drink, and probably only suffering form the company it shared. Outstanding but not profound wine this night. 92 pts

  • This was outstanding! The bottle looked like it had seepage. When I removed the foil it looked bad. It tasted young and was not nearly as brown as I'd think. Likely one of the best aged Bordeaux I've had. Lots of fruit left with a strong bouquet on the nose and a supple mouthfeel along with a finish I can still taste.

  • My second time drinking this wine this year. It was a bit of an odd duck in an otherwise burgundy evening, but it showed very well, and I liked it.

  • This is a stellar example of a mature Pomerol. The complicated set of aromatics deliver an array of floral, milk chocolate, boysenberry, black cherry, spice and fresh herbal scents. Rich, round, ripe and fleshy, the velvet textures and and round, silky fruits make each sip, sniff and swallow a pleasure. Popped and poured, the wine improved for more than an hour in the glass. It's probably at peak maturity, but there is no real hurry to finish it.

  • From Mag, popped the cork on this because it started to leak, which made me worried before opening. Like the 75, the initial nose indicated that the wine was not in great condition, but as soon as it hit the palette, you knew this wasn't the case. The nose settled after a while and the wine opened beautifully. Silky smooth, plenty of fruit. The overriding adjective for this wine is Elegance. Trot in the 70's seemed to produce beautiful long lived wines while the major houses struggled to do so. Don't decant this wine. Pour enough into a glass to leave it open at the bottom of the shoulder, it will open well just inside the bottle and importantly, maintain its fruit. It is a great wine and showed again that great wine makers can make good-great wines in average years.

  • This is yet another mature Trotanoy that is drinking fabulously with incredible flavors of black plums, licorice and bitter chocolate. Fairly full-bodied and possessing a firm underpinning of crisp acidity, this beautiful wine is decadent and classy at the same time. The finish is extremely complex with notes of dark minerals, spices and bitter chocolate mixed with sweet earth. Still young and full of life but drinking gorgeously now. Damn, I wish I had some of this in my cellar!

  • 1st dinner in 2012 with K, M and T (Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, The Forum Shopping Mall, Orchard Road): Opened for 60mins. Decanted and served. The color is absolutely showed much younger than a 42yrs old wine: dark garnet core with light brown hue. Stunning complex aromas with superb fragrance that is hard to dissect, everything is in a total harmony. Can the palate catch up? No when popped and poured but after decanted and have some aeration in the glass, this was gorgeous and every bit as great as the nose. Youthful, expansive and flirting with seductiveness, finesse and class. Light savory note on the entry bring out the sweet blackberry, blackcurrant and plummish fruits intermixed with dried herbs, earth, leather and crushed rock complexity with remarkable grip and tension. Very pure and concentrated, still a touch of firm tannin enhanced the grip that leads to the intense, detail finished that goes on and on. Incredible freshness. A complete wine that is in its peak and will easily last for at least another decade. Magnificence.

  • Truffle, milk chocolate, black cherry liqueur, licorice, 5 spice, earth, tobacco, forest floor and black raspberry scents lead to a decadent Pomerol wine filled with deep, layers of concentrated, ripe, pure berries. Sensuous, opulent, round, plush waves of fruit flow effortlessly across your palate. The wine ends with a long, rich, coating of spicy black cherries, licorice and plums. This is fully mature, but at 41, there is no hurry to drink it. Well stored bottles could easily deliver pleasure for another 10-20 years. Everything is in balance from start to finish in this stunning Bordeaux wine.

  • fill level at base of neck.

poured to a nice garnet color with no amber, and an enticing bouquet of red and black fruit plus a nice licorice dimension that added some sex appeal. It opened up after an hour and was very giving in both aroma and taste. Sweet fruit present with a nice complexity of flavors and lushness that coats the tongue. Very seductive yet not a finesse wine by any stretch, my guess is it still has years of life ahead

  • Served with the 70 Petrus, which tended to overshadow it a bit, but nonetheless a very good wine. Dark fruits, moderate tannins. Round and rich. Not as complex as the Petrus and less depth.

  • A slightly off bottle, with a depressed cork. Somehwat subdued red and plum fruits, with some complicating notes of soy or hoisin on the nose; stewed plums and a dark/brown sugar sweetness in the palate but missing that sexy quality to the fruit you expect to have here; this just seemed to be missing that extra level of quality and lift and was probably just a slightly affected bottle. Enjoyable but not profound.

  • This wine just refuses to age. The color is very deep ruby and there is nary a trace of orange at the rim, and almost no lessening of color. The aroma is modest but pleasant, dark plum and black current. Then, in the mouth, very intense, amazingly fresh and long. Hefty tannins are present, but so well rounded it is not at all bitter. That excellent 1970 acidity adds to the structure. There's not much complexity or subtlety but the one or two notes it has are sheer pleasure. Near perfection in old style merlot.

  • Truffles, tobacco, earth and forest floor scents just popped from the bottle, let alone the glass. The palate was thrilled with layers of sexy, plumy fruit. The finish carried everything through.

  • There's no doubt that this vintage of Trotanoy simply refuses to age despite the passage of time. The color is still deep ruby with just a bit of orange at the rim. The nose and palate are both heavily domiunated by cedar and blackberry so while it's impressively flavorful and intense it's a bit too monolithic at age 39. The tannins are still intense and perhaps too strong for ideal but with the right food, there's still pleasure to be had if you favor intensity over complexity.

  • Wow, this wine kicked in with an explosive nose of spicy plums, smoke, flowers, earth and coffee. Still young , full bodied and concentrated with a long, rich. Opulent, powerful, plum filled finish. This wine will continue positively for at least another 5-10 years .

  • While generally liked by the group at Palme d'Or at BWE 2008, David thought the fruit was too thin to stand up to the structure. I could see what he meant although with the label fully exposed I was inclined to (want to) like it even more. The very firm core of tannins was very evident, more like a northern Medoc that a typical Pomerol. Still, the fruit refuses to die and although this one was a little unbalanced, I still though it merited an outstanding rating (A-).

  • The winner by a tongue over the facinating trio of '70s (Haut-Brion, Montrose and this) at Four Rivers with the Gardiners. The tannins were subdued, perhaps in part by the 8 hour decant. Somewhat dull on the nose but a hint of dark friuits and a whisper of smoke were discernable. Then, really mouth filling, intense, powerful yet balanced and excellent length with a firm finish. A clear winner and no hint of fading at all.

  • Unbelievable !!! still very dark ruby. Best nose of Trotanoy's fruits appears suddenly then layers of leather, steel, mineral, deep, dramatic and seductive. Almost full-bodied, fruits bomb in the mouth, very nice ABC ( acid, balance and complex ) smooth tannin , round and delicious, Lovely long-finished. Very nice wine!!!

The best Trotanoy I ever tested. So sad that the smell of sediment is all around, I hate that scent indeed....maybe it can gets 98/100

  • (Lampreia, Seattle) Started off with animal funk which lifted into suede and soft textures which gained progressively in weight over time. Very rich, smoked-meats and mocha. A bit of grip only augmented the absolutely perfect texture aspect of this wine. Delightful w/ a grilled veal chop.

  • Dinner at Lampreia (Seattle, WA): This opened up with definite musty notes and an oxidized quality, but a sample in glass seemed to improve and showed a rich palate. I held out hope that the bottle was OK and just needed some aeration to blow off bottle stink. With 30-45 minutes in a decanter, this had improved considerably. A faint note of must remained on the nose, but the palate was outstanding, rich, chocolaty, smoky and powerful, lots of grip, plenty of tannin to resolve. A beefy style of Pomerol. With a seared and roasted veal chop this was absolute heaven, and it continued to open and gain texture and dimension for another hour. Lovely stuff.

  • What a sublime wine. Intoxicating, chocolate, plum fragrances that were made better by a rich, thick, dense palate of sexy, velvet drenched fruit. It's opulent, fragrant and continued improving in the glass during the entire evening. Great juice! The only two negatives are one, recognizing how much patience I need for my 98's to come around and two, that I do not have enough of this sublime nectar in my cellar.

  • A ten hour decant for his bottle, recently sourced from PC, likely softened this wine to its advantage. RMP is worried about excess tannin, but this richly colored beauty had the firm core of blackcurrant fruit to balance the tannins. Despite the long decant, the wine continued to evolve in the glass over a 2 hr. period; at first exhibiting a distinct note of black licorice, then becoming more complex and elusive. The finish is very firm and I imagined I detected a core of iron. This '70 seems more youthful than all the rest from any Bordeaux from either side of the Gironde, certainly including Latour and Palmer, the usual favorites, as well as Petrus.

  • I was more than a little worried about this bottle when it was first poured, as it seemed a bit too sharp, acidic and maybe a bit oxidized. Nonetheless, we elected to stick with this, and it paid off handsomely. Air helped a great deal here. A sharp and spicy nose of gunflint and mineral was almost shocking, just popping from the glass and SMACKING you in the face. Mmm, the palate is rich, chocolately, perhaps a little thin, yet amazingly structured with chunky tannins and very present acidity. The more air this received the more generous it became. Black fruit. Big notes of roasted plum. Impressive tannins. A little metallic perhaps on the finish, yet the minerality here is unique and impressive.

  • Hanging out with Marc Lazar; 3/16/2006-3/18/2006 (Seattle, WA): It's hard to believe that this wine is not even close to being ready. The nose is obviously right bank with telltale smells of soy sauce, black fruit, hints of powdered sugar. The palate is huge, very tannic, very long but really in need of more time. I enjoyed every drop of it, but the structure is off the charts. Big waves of black fruit interplay with mineral, tobacco, Asian spices, exotic yet muscular, masculine, almost bruising. A wine like this makes me wish I was born in 1970 instead of 1969.

  • Red with clearly visibly fade. Delicate aromas of cinnamon spice and tomato plant. There is also a slight, but not un-pleasant, herbal whiff. The wine comes across in a spicy, intense and strong fashion - packed with ripe fruit and complex and mulit dimensional. Furthermore the wine is without any hard edges. Yet, my relatively low mark is given with due consideration to the aftertaste which, in my opinion, turned just a bit watery and dilute.
