Comte de Vogue Tasting with Jean Luc Pepin (London, 19 September 2023): This was the strongest of the Bonnes Mares lineup and had nicely sculpted fruit and mineral with some emerging gameyness. Maybe in several years this will reach the level of the Musigny and Amoureuses of the same vintage which are already open for business at this stage. 93-94

From magnum. After being opened for three hours, the wine finally revealed why it is such a great Grand Cru terroir. Perfect balance and poise with Grand Cru punch. Sensational wine. Freightening to think this wine from the tannic 1993 vintage in magnum format has still not peaked. My guess is from 35 to 50 years this wine will be something truely profound. Great tonight but took a long time to reveal itself. Worth the wait!

La Paulée - Friday Night Dinner (A Fiori): My contribution to the after party. Delicious and so deep. This still has youthful, dense fruit but it is maturing and showing plenty of earthen, floral depth. Persistent and velvety. 95+

Opened for 2hrs+ then served. Amazing Color, medium ruby and very bright, hard to believe this is already 25yrs old. This bottle reminded me again why I love Burgundy.
Highly focus, blueberry, violet, spices. Elegant and complex. Silky smooth, great depth with restraint power. Lovely harmony between fruits, acidity, tannin. Great length and Super fresh. Just a touch of bitter sweet cocoa and savoury note added better complexity. No rush to drink it but it is very hard to resist when Vogue is on point.
The 1993 Vogue Musigny that I had few months ago was also very youthful. Love 1993 !

Violets and cool crushed rocks (slate?) on the nose, a depth of blue/black fruit. This delivered pleasure but didn't wow. Probably has years to go and I would be interested to see if some more complexity emerges over time.

1993 Red Burgundy Horizontal: This nose is quite expressive with elegant florals over bright red and blueberry fruit. Robust earthy character with spices. Palate is straightforward and thin. A lot of people at the tasting putting this in their top three wines of the event... Its technically sound and pleasant drinking, but I don't get that much here.

Tight on the nose, palate very giving and rich. This well stored bottle was youngish to me, and too old to those who love primary fruit. We are splittng hairs.

St. Vincent (Indianapolis): Drinking wonderfully now; much more enjoyable than the '02 Musigny which seemed painfully young and unyielding in contrast. This has wonderful aromatics spanning a range of flavours from higher toned florality and spice to more savoury earthy and mushroom broth notes, and a core of fresh red and dark fruit beneath. There's still some fine grained tannin apparent on the palate, but it feels remarkably elegant and polished now, and it's a pleasure to drink.

Opened, and took 40 mins in decanter before fruit started to show. No real bricking. Initially a little tannic but once fruit opened up it balanced out the tannin and acid. Flavors of black fruit, slight tertiary characters of earth, didn't get the rustic taste others have mentioned. Great length, a powerful wine that's at its drinking window now but will continue to evolve over the next 10+ years as still lots of primary fruit and structure to last.

Full ruby with lightening only at the extreme edge. Started out pungent and stemmy, then black fruit, and a more brambly aromatic finale. Medium weight, a bit of roughness from the tannin, but more and more rounded and silky as it went. Blackberry, licorice, and increasing inner mouth perfume and smokiness. Still quite youthful. Excellent now and promising more than that with another 10 years in bottle. Clean and not rustic at all, just taking its time to unfold and show its quality.

Excellent level & excellent cork. Decanted for 2.5 hrs, sipped every 20 mins or so to gauge evolution. Opened up and gained after 2+ hrs. Perfect color, no bricking. The vividness belies its age. Typical pinot cigar box on the nose, quite floral. Very good mouth development, sustained with good acidity and balance. Noticeable oak notes, but not out of balance. Length is fine, but the body is surprisingly light (relatively speaking). This is a style favoring elegance over bigness. My kind of wine. 92-93. In a good spot right now, no rush, will remain at that level for 6-10 yrs.

Was offered this blind and guessed '99 to '04. Good nose of dark red cherry some some ground coffee. Plenty of red fruit on the palate but still fighting off some oak. Some further developed earth-driven notes, but overall seems younger than '93. Still very good and very pretty red burg.

Poured from a magnum at a social event. Black fruit, powerful concentrated flavor. Intense. Long finish. Multiple BH notes consistent. Good spine of fine grainy tannins. This could easily hit peak at age of 30.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago IL): Not given much air before serving, this came across with lots of black and red fruit but even more pronounced acidity and tannins. Overall still a bit rugged, this wine still needs plenty more time and I don't think it will ever live up to incredibly high standards of Vogue's 1993 Musigny or Amoureuses.

Beautiful ruby color. This hits it out of the park from the first sip with a great cut of black cherry fruit to go along with firm minerals notes and a full body. The texture is firm and silky with really good grip and intensity. Finishes crisp and fresh with complex mineral notes and dark cherry spices. Still primary and beautifully balanced and primed for a very long life. 94+

Unfortunately my last bottle, but what a good bottle it was! It really need some more time, but nonetheless it was beautiful at this time. Dark fruits, earth, concentrated. Tannins are soft. Great structure with plenty of fruit on the palate. 95 pts.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Surprisingly advanced for a 1993. Starts with red fruit, slightly floral, modest spice. Picks up some concentration towards finish. Structure is well integrated, tannins very soft. Ready to drink, which again is surprising for a 1993 Bonnes Mares.

Fairly consistent with the bottle had back in March, which came from the same case. This one seemed a bit more youthful though. Firmer red fruits on the nose with some great spice all throughout.

Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Light baking spice, anise, and iron structure aromas. Silky and I feel more feminine in style. Really nice acidity. A very solid wine that seems to be drinking well but has another five to seven years of life.

A mature nose of red berries, damp leaves/earth, and mushroom. Some floral notes as well. Silky fruit on the palate with a moderate finish. Good acidity. Tannins have just about completely faded. In its prime now.

This was very nice and just entering maturity for my taste. Forest floor, rose, and red fruit on the nose. Long on the palate. If it were for the 99 rousseau clos de beze, it would have been a star.

Tasted at LJBTC with Sam Maywood, who reportedly purchased the bottle from Vintage Wines, Ltd. shortly prior. When questioned, he stated that the bottle was "on the shelf," and I suspect that he bought a poorly cellared bottle which simply had been stored at room temperature.
Bright disc with medium ruby robe and red rim. Clean nose showing moderately intense cola, coffee, chocolate and some red fruit. Light to medium-bodied, with soft tannins and similar flavors as nose. Medium, smooth finish. Quite good but somewhat disappointing considering the pedigree of this vineyard and such a good vintage. I am suspicious that this disappointment may be idiosyncratic to this specific bottle.
