Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): Delicious red fruits. More rustic than some of the other examples. Very drinkable, but the acid is showing a touch more pronounced than I might have expected.

Drunk over 2 nights.Opened 1 hour beforehand with 30 mins in the glass.Whilst there was a flowery bouquet the wine was not nearly ready. The wine opened up on day 2 but still somewhat closed. Some fruit but still backward; elegant nonetheless.I think this wine needs at least another 5 years of cellaring.Nonetheless an enjoyable drink which could be so much better.

Stored in cool Whistler cellar less than 45 degrees F and part of a vertical tasting of Engel Clos Vougeot. Medium ruby with sweet Alpine strawberry nose. Impressive Montmorency cherry palate with a freshly harvested cranberry finish. Fabulously complex and needs time. These Engel Clos Vougeot’s are delicious mid-term and built for the long haul. Best 2030-2050.
Drank at Jungsik against the 02 Rousseau Chambertin and 02 Rousseau CsJ
My first time drinking Engel. This was a bit of a tough comparison but the foil of two exquisite Gevrey-Chambertins was instructional.
At first there was a little funk on the bouquet. It smelled trapped and a little herbaceous (the wine was double decanted about 3 hours prior to consumption). After sitting in the glass for another couple of hours the wine started to open up; the funk blew off and left us with sharp, high toned red fruit flavors. It was a bit cherry for my taste. A fun wine to drink but not what I was reaching for next to stiff competition.

Bright Ruby.Quite sweet candied red fruits on the palate with a similar nose. Not a lot of soil or spice notes and was very much in the red fruit spectrum of cranberry and wild strawberries. Still a touch of tannin and structure at the end so plenty of life left in it! Just a touch sweet compared to the Richebourg and Chambertin that we had with it.

Damn this was good. Candied red fruits. Plenty of spices. Great depth to this wine. So ready to drink right now. Everything is in perfect balance. Mesmerizing complexity. Its so great when Engel bottles are on and this was fully on.
La Paulee lunch, served blind. Cloudy color. First the nose was very murky here, a bit of oxidation. I thought this was over the hill but then it blew off after ca 20 minutes in teh glass. Felt almost Ponsot style, compressed, ripe fruit, dark cherry, sour, lots of stemmy notes as well. Long and complex finish. A real beast and what an interesting wine it was in the end. Interesting also that every time you drink a Rene Engel wine with an experienced Burgundy crowd the same discussion or should I say venting starts.. What a pity that the Chateau Latour team of CEO Frederic Engerer took over and now produce an utterly useless Pauillac styled Burgundy with lots of oak and extraction. They should have stayed in Bordeaux. I like their Chateau Latour and hate their Domaine Eutenie

A little odd funk on the nose that was reminiscent of my subpar 85 experience. Unlike the 85, this funk blew off to reveal a deliciously dense and textured wine. Lots of spice and dark fruits with a hint of mineral. One of the best and more open 02 reds I’ve had recently.

Fresh. Holder giv akt gjennom hele kurven. Meget stram i finish med bestemte tanniner. Denne burde da utvikle seg i mange år fremover? Utrolig kult å få smake dette. Sitter en liten evighet. 93-94p

NDG 2002 Clos de Vougeot Dinner (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): Another very nice wine. This nosed very differently from the other wines on the night, much more masculine, with lots of savoury earth and meat and loam swirling around dark fruit and boiled herb and spicy aromas. The palate had a lovely clarity and balance to it, with deliciously juicy flavours of dark cherries and more savoury orange peel lined with a nice bit of earthy minerality. Fine-boned tannins and nicely integrated acidity led the way into a long, spice tinged finish. There was a real backbone to this. A really complete wine, starting to drink well, but with its best years ahead of it yet. I would love to try it again in 3-4 years.

Ruby. Gobs of cool Pinot fruit interlaced with a stony minerality and a slight green (stem-derived?) note. Mixed berry on the palate around a firm mineral core and crisp acidity. The 2002 Clos Vougeot is open, clean, and aromatic — textbook for both the vineyard and the vintage. This likely won't get much better from here, but should hold for awhile.

Nose of bright red fruit (cherry, raspberry) and dry smoky oak. There are faint, but sharp, notes of horse hair, pepper, and quinine. Palate is medium-bodied and silky, with bright acidity and a touch of oxidation. Flavours of raspberry, brown apple, smoked nuts, and lime zest, leading to a lovely, cleansing finish.

With sushi at Shinji. This was "pomegranate" red, quite cloudy and murky. The wine was in good condition though. Very floral nose, lots of lavender, woodspice, new leather, sour cherries, grapefruit and strawberry jam. There was good structure, acidity and complexity on the palate, with a good mix of red fruit with some secondary characteristics - truffle, wood, spice, earth and smoke. My only gripe with this wine was that it seemed a little matured for a 2002, especially considering I had the village from the same vintage a couple of months back which had so much vibrancy and purity of fruit. This also somewhat lacked the "wildness" I would expect from an Engel.

Deep purple robe, surprising for the age. The nose is strong with fruits, tannins and Violette. In mouth the wine is more silky but still quite angular. Far from saying it's a bad wine, I simply think it was no match to a clos st-jacques from the same year drank just before. The wine is very good but somehow lacks in finesse and coordination to be truly outstanding.

Not the last dinner at Rothmann's (NYC): Interesting nose showing red fruit and spice, but the palate is the more expressive part of this wine: Lovely red fruit, sweet with red candy, a good band of spice running through it, and firm structure. With air time, the wine softens, the red fruit turns darker, with some light spice, watermelon candy, and a good spicy finish. I'm wondering how much of this spice is oak derived, but in the end, that question isn't really important. Could use, perhaps, a bit more firmness, and less candy to the fruit, but definitely a fun, tasty wine. Thanks, Michel.

Popped and poured. The nose is quite nice with blackberries and a bit of glycerin. This held up well over four hours, and still has a plenty of tannic structure to help it age. I think this will get better in a few years and last at least ten. This was a solid bottle of wine, but not necessarily of GC class at this point.

Burgundy 2002 with Allen Meadows (Burgundy Wine Company): Confusing nose, showing some sawdust and other disparate elements. Black-fruited on the palate, it seemed simple, lacking focus though showing more refinement on the back end. I never would have guessed Grand Cru. Allen Meadows conceded its austerity and characterized it as an extreme rendition of classical Burgundy. I wouldn't bet against it but it seemed a waste to uncork now. As it happens, this was the only one of today's wines present in last year's tasting of 2001s, and the '01 was far less anonymous and more distinctive, in fact the apparent group favorite of that tasting.
