Spontaneous Ultra Tasting: blind I'm not a big fan of this vintage but this one of the best expressions. Again a very good bottle. Most of them didn't like it so much but I like the power and spicieness of this wine. Good balanced and starting to reach his Peak. 93-94

Much darker than the '15 and '16 served alongside - both age and botrytis are clear here. And what a beautiful honeyed-botrytis nose this wine has. Lovely fresh almond, mango, pineapple, honeysuckle. Some minerality still shows, but definitely not to the extent of the younger wines. Palate follows with more honeyed botrytis and some light mushroom. The acidity is ever present to keep things from getting too heavy and cumbersome, bright orchard fruit gives this real lift. The finish is long and tropical with a touch a sweetness. I can't see much upside from here, but who cares - in a fantastic spot now, and I suspect this wine's age benefits from the level of botrytis in the vintage.

Keller Abtserde study: Poured after the '15 and '16 Abtserde GGs. I love the aromatics here - there's the same bright fruit and minerality the other 2 Abtserdes showed, but the botrytis here adds more depth with exotic tropical fruit and honeyed notes. Of the 3 GGs, this had easily my favorite aromatic profile, with air also bringing out some light smoky and burnished notes. It shows the richness of the vintage of the palate too - it's a heavier, slightly softer wine than the '15/'16 GGs, but still is very well balanced with no shortage of cut. Fantastic, though this is very much at peak and I don't see this improving with more time in the cellar.

Abts EŽ study (Chicago, IL): #42-07, 13% abv. Far better than the last bottle I tried (from the same lot) earlier this year. Again, this definitely has botrytis inflections, along with plenty of tropical fruit -- pineapple, mangos, that sort of delicious stuff. It's quite exotic, and far fatter than the racy 2015 and 2016. This bottle is cleaner than the last bottle I had, and there's a lovely purity of fruit here that I don't remember. It's a heady wine, to be sure, but I found the acidity here to help balance it. End of the day, I think others liked this more than I did -- I personally do not enjoy botrytis in dry riesling.

Abtserde Vertical and some nice add-ons (nine0five and Concept Riesling Düsseldorf): Not blind. In this flight I would guessed the 06 as the winner but suprisingly I preferred the 07. Some saw it vice versa. Great nose after yellow stone fruits. in the mid palate a bit too broad, missing the refreshing acidity in the late palate. Reached his top but no hurry within the next 5 years. I had in the past some bottles with more precision in the finish. 95

Just like the last bottle I opened in March. A great Riesling with no shortage of bright fruit and minerality, but also showing the botrytis of the vintage in the background. Brilliant Riesling. This has matured quite a bit from what I remember last having it 5 years ago, but it's still absolutely compelling and a fantastic bottle of wine. This was opened a while in advance, and kept building aromatic depth and complexity, showing an array of intense minerality, bright fruit ranging from tarter citrus flavours to something more tropical, florality, and a honeyed botrytis note. The palate is remarkable - powerful with a lot of extract, yet very well balanced by bright acids, and finishing with remarkable length. Glad I have a few more, though with the botrytis notes getting stronger/more apparent now, I'm not holding these for the long term.

Indianapolis IV; 3/9/2018-3/11/2018 (Indianapolis, IN): #42-07, 13% abv. This was initially too warm, which resulted in the wine showing a little bit fat and ripe. Once properly cooled down though, this was a wine with good cut and raciness. This is a very broad and expansive wine, but to my palate, the relatively heavy botrytis on this doesn't work well with the GG character.

Light golden colour showing first maturity. But the tight, not intense nose is telling something different. So it seems to me that decantation is not such a bad idea in this case. So I decant the half bottle, and give the rest one day of air. After one hour it opens up with pineapple, peach, and citrus along with the mineral components as flint stone, chalk, but without getting intense or explosive. On the palate it shows more vigor than on the nose. However this is the kind of wine that gets its points for his complexity and elegance and doesn't deserve more because of its lack of generosity.

10 years after Riesling tasting - 2006 (Villa Behr (Wendlingen, Germany)): Double decanted about 2 hour before. First vintage wine was called Abtserde! Clear, youthful pale citrus golden color. Medium+ intense, quite youthful nose with lots of citrus fruit, herbs and stones. Bone dry, really the bigger brother of the Kirchspiel: It has everything of the Kirchspiel in an increased way: More pressure on the palate, even more elegant, longer. Wonderful wine with lots of potential and years of development ahead. Best wine in this flight. From a PQR point of view certainly the best buy in Keller’s range of GG. It just starts to show it's beauty, so no need to hurry it has several more years ahead.

This inaugural vintage of the (now famous) Abtserde is the product of a very difficult growing season, but KP Keller's selection was meticulous and the quality of the wine is excellent. Due to climatic conditions, the acidity is slightly low, but the fruit is ripe and the chalky minerality is impressive. Balance and purity are impeccable and energy and length are fine. The precision of expression and complexity will probably only increase over the next decade. If anything, better on day two. One to watch.

It becomes obvious that there was a distinct Abtserde characteristic right from the start. With characteristics that all wine (except 2008) have in common: Immense presence and complexity with density, chalky minerality, flintstone and traces of orange zest. This can already be seen in the 2006 bottling. Stone fruit and red currant, delicate (white) florals, some petrol, almond and little iodine in a juicy and solid package with noticeable acidity. A wine of perfect balance still on its way up.

A private dinner (at home): Finely woven and precise nose with wonderfully complex aromatics, notes of citrus, minerals, flowers, tropical fruit, hint of honey; on the palate the wine is rounded, quite big but not nearly as energetic, intense and tightly wound as the recently tasted G-Max 2006, quite a ripe style, acidity may be slightly too low for long ageing, but it may also just be covered in flesh; very good length. Holds up well over two days in the half-empty bottle.

Absolutely spectacular dry Riesling that's really compelling to sit down with and follow over the course of a meal. Incredible complexity with layers of ripe citrus, pear and some tropical fruits accented by floral, herbal, saline and mineral notes; there's a faint glyceral sweetness up front on the palate, but tremendous acidity beneath that keeps it very precise and perfectly balanced. Amazing depth, finesse and length here, this is really something stunning.

Rieslingfeier - BYOB Main Event (Rouge Tomate, NYC): From jeroboam (thanks Robert!), and it comes across more fresh and youthful than the '06 Abtserde that was served the previous evening at EMP. The alcoholic heat I noticed then wasn't as noticeable here, though it still feels like a very big wine, and while fantastic now, I'm not sure how gracefully this will age given its ripeness and alcohol.

Rieslingfeier - Collector's Dinner (Eleven Madison Park, NYC): The first thing that stands out here is the power and breadth, but there's also tremendous complexity and a remarkably glossy, polished texture in the mouth. It doesn't have the piercingly vivid mineral character the other GGs show; this comes across riper with the fruit almost verging on the tropical, and conveying more intensity than elegance. It's compelling to drink though with amazing depth, though there's just a touch of warmth on the back end. Auction bottling, from magnum.

East Village Riesling Extravaganza (New York): An amazing wine and the contrast with the G-Max is fascinating - this is more expressive on the nose with intense floral aromas, spices, melon and what I can only try to describe as being an almost oceanic character with sea breeze, seaweed and saline notes. Incredibly light and polished on the palate with bright pineapple, melon and lime flavours infused with salty minerals. Finishes long with a sense of glycerin sweetness in the back.

Auction bottling, from magnum.

volle gel kleur, gedecanteerd, volle neus, veel impressies, fruitig, met bloesem, geel fruit, ananas, peer, veel mineraliteit, zoutig, zeewier, heel complex, smaak is rond en met veel structuur, rijpheid, concentratie, veel indrukken, erg mooi bij de voorgerechten van Nils Hankel im Lerbach

Good balance and material and already delicious. Not sure about the price though.
