  • Not sure if it’s this bottle but a bit of raisoned characteristic. Maybe a bit oxidized unfortunately. Cherry and black licorice. Nice on the palate.

  • This was the WOTN at the BDX Rive tour in NYC this past week. All agreed, it was fully integrated and connected. Multi layered. Not closed.

  • Super dark and concentrated, with a healthy ruby rim. Incredible nose dominated (perhaps surprisingly) by leather and oak, together with the rest of the usual smorgasboard of left bank bordeaux tertiary notes. Med+ acid and chalky tannins. The sweetness from the oak definitely persists on the palate, together with menthol and, for me, ripe red fruits dominating blacker ones. Some tertiary truffle/earthiness.

  • Opened at Mosu HK. Decanted upon arrival and served a few hours in around the time of the main course.

Mouton always confuses me. I opened a 1996 a few months ago and even with hours of air it still felt monolithic... on the other hand, this was a pleasant surprise, as it was drinking very well!

Predominantly dark fruits wafting up, combined with oak, vanilla, and hints of graphite and sous bois. Palate was very well integrated and the tannins were slightly grippy but past being astringent, giving it good structure. Felt loosened up - I would have guessed a few years older if served blind - but all in all a very lovely Mouton.

Didn't have the explosiveness, complexity or staying power of better vintages, but this was a very pleasant surprise and a generous treat from D. Perhaps it's time to cautiously yet optimistically explore the first growths from the mid-2000s?

  • Had next to 2011 Dal Forno, 2011 Gaja Costa Russi, 2008 Masseto and the Mouton outshined them all.

  • Pronounced nose intensity with black fruit, toast, cassis, toast, charr wood, spices. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Tannin is fine and velvety. Long finish. Very well balanced. Will improve with ageing and decanting of 2-3 hours needed.

  • Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission Haut-Brion Tasting and Dinner (Winefield's Auctioneers, Amsterdam, NL): Showing beautifully, rich Pauillac fruit, firmly structured but with inimitable Mouton richness, starting to show some tertiary evolution, precise and transparent, excellent resonance and length.

  • decant 2-3 hours. super floral nose with lots of earth and depth. Wonderful palate even though still young and could have used much more aeration.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Smaak / Afdronk: 18 + Algemeen / potentieel: 9 = 95/100

Colour: Deep ruby red with a thin rim without a trace of discolouration. Aroma / bouquet: First impression: a tough bouquet, powerful, at the same time Mouton-Rotschild-seductive with subtle impressions of dark fruit, refined wood (cedar wood but also cigar boxes). Taste / Aftertaste: Also in the mouth, this MR makes both a powerful and refined impression. A soft acidity, nicely matured - but still very tough at this stage of drinkability - tannins. Echger, even at this not seriously matured stage, this wine is perfectly balanced. General / Potential: One of the few MRs I tasted 'relatively young'. As pleasant as ever, still nicely robust at this stage. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Taste / Aftertaste: 18 + General / potential: 9 = 95/100

  • Double decanted two hours before. Dry, elegant subtle, very classic wine with a wonderful structure; there is a firm feel here, yet it is never a hard wine. Some tannin left, will improve, certainly. 94+

  • I have obviously kept this wine too long in my sub-tropical fridge, for it has lost most of its body (I wish I could lose mine). Nonetheless, a wine of great elegance, with perfect balance of dark fruit, subtle acidity and oak.

  • Firm, classic, and still stoic, the wine is powerful, concentrated, long, full-bodied, and tannic, but it is also stubbornly young, hanging on to its structured side, so if you own any, you will need to have plenty of patience. Drink from 2030-2070.

  • The Four Seasons Tasting 2006 Bordeaux First Growths (Aubergine Restaurant): (Tasted Blind): 87 CS, 13 Merlot. With a deep garnet colour, the bouquet sparkles with an amazing depth of fruit and intensity, displaying layers of black fruits, graphite and mineral that segues into earthiness, blue fruit and smoke. Fresh and powerfully structured, the entry is pure and focussed with flavours of graphite, blackcurrant, minerals, pencil shavings, menthol, coffee grinds and hints of smoke. Full-bodied with fantastic concentration, the tannins are seamless and in harmony with the fruit, making for an utterly compelling and ethereal experience. Some oak notes on the remarkably long finish, and clean flowing lines make this wine outstanding.

  • Dark purple. Nose tobacco, cedar, smoke, earthiness - blackcurrant, cherry. Palate the same and some spiciness along with the red fruits and subtle chocolate notes.

While the fruit is good, it is the complex tertiary which really make this stand out. Complex and distinctive.

Very supple and smooth, and together. Long, complex finish. Drinking well now but with a lot of life ahead.

  • Tasted blind at my neighbor's house, thought it was a top-flight California Cab, but not one of the huge fruit bombs. Surprised it was Mouton, but it does have a high percent of cabernet sauvignon. The cassis and plums predominated in the aroma and flavor, not much of the charred wood, cedar and tobacco often found in some Pauillac wines. Full-bodied but also very round, balanced, and perfectly drinkable. Slight tannin in the background. Surprising that for so young a Mouton it seems so mature, but I'm sure it will hold many more years.

  • Reticent, it takes air, coaxing and patience before the bright, fresh, vibrant red fruits begin to show, Classic, refined, and on the cassis, red plum side of the fruit range, there is a firmness to the tannins that will take time to resolve. In a decade, this is probably going to score much higher. Patience is required here.

  • I like this Mouton a lot for it's pure black fruit profile and terroir-transparent character. Layered already with a beautiful opulent texture, medium-to-full body and plenty of fresh acidity. The finish is loaded with graphite mineral intensity along with hints of smoky eucalyptus and Asian spices. However, the tannins are tight so this isn't ready for prime time yet but I really like it's potential. 93+

  • Decanted for 4 hours before serving. Dark currant, cassis, violets, vanilla and sweet spice. Palate was rich and regal with good length and lush fruit. Although it is still very young, a long decant will make this accessible today. Lovely. 93++

  • Aromatically arousing, decanted for an hour plus, the jam-packed treat is a fruit farm for the connoisseur of berries- blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, and cherry are all revealed in the nose, on the palate, and all the way down. Cedar forest has receded to a wonderful whiff of violets, honeysuckle and heliotrope. Stored next to the tobacco on the way from China, the spices complement the vibrant tannins right to the core of this ripe, full-bodied, supple, and enrapturing wine. Eleven more, halleluiah!

  • wow does it get more bordeaux than this? Tasted from a good friends bottle. Still felt young and would love to try again in 10 years. Tasted next to ornellaia also from 2006. Ornellaia felt big and clumsy in comparison to this. Mouton was big and balanced.

  • If you have a bottle put it back in the cellar quickly! Way to early to fully appreciate this wine. It’s big in every way, but definitely not at its best. 2006 was clearly a very good year for some muscular tannic wines but even allowing 12+ years for it to soften it hasn’t. I would suggest leaving for a further 7 years at least so 2026 let’s have another go!

  • Tasting at Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Deep purple in colour. Fine tannins, smooth. Longer bottle age brings more complexity. A fine and elegant wine, classic Bordeaux. Richer and smoother than the Petit Mouton 2006 tasted alongside but not as big as the 2017.

  • So good, yet so young. Plenty of spicy tannins up front. Balanced and elegant with that Mouton beet flavor backed by deep dark fruits and great length. Needs a few years in the cellar to develop complexity. Try again in 2025.

  • Developing ruby core; great nose, already complex. A Mineral overlay with brilliantly defined developing red and black fruits. A touch of leather, spice, cedar and cigars. Builds in intensity as it opens up; Similarly impressive on the palate, quite a hedonistic quality to this 2006. Already very fine indeed. Long, and like a velvet glove on the finish. Excellent.

  • Open for business and catching the 2005. Like all the 2006's this treat is showing legs and love. The bouquet is divine with blue and blackberry fruit revealing texture and jam. The structure is nigh on perfect as the stone and cedar of the forest glide down the palate with perfectly textured tannins.A beauty.

Hm. 97 poeng.

  • This wine has so much to offer, but what really impresses me is the freshness and the elegance in the finish. The nose is perfumed with dark raspberry and rose petals with a core of sweet spices and sweet oak. More rustic complex flavours of lead pencil shavings, tobacco and brick wood. Deep concentrated palate with lots of cassis integrated light toasted barrels and ripe tannins.

  • Amazing nose, vanilla covered pata negra rubbed in blackberry jam in an old cigar box. Well balanced with sandy tannins and some acidity ending it all. Feels like very ripe grapes. Keep for another 3-4 years.

  • This is a sleeper hit. This vintage has been consistently underestimated. Opened on Chinese New Year's Day and decanted. It drank well after 30 minutes then continued to open up over 3 hours. Clear and assertive Pauillac juice. Blessed with early drink-ability. Held its own next to the legendary 82'. Really enjoyed it. A good value if there is such a thing for well rated first growths.

  • “Bordeaux 1959 – 2014 (blind)”, flight 8, wine 1. The medium-bodied wine offered dark fruit, cherry, black currant and mint on the nose and palate, with fresh acidity, very refined tannin and incredible length. A wine with great structure, the extraordinary quality of tannin stood out. A little closed and not the most complex yet, but very focused. Needs a lot of time. 94+ for its potential.

  • Don't let the lightening of color around the edge fool you into thinking this ready to drink. The nose is only now starting to show its tobacco, cigar box, forest floor, exotic spice and dark fruit characteristics. Full bodied, dense and powerful, while there is still a wealth of tannin present, the tannins are ripe. The fruit is sweet, warm and spicy. There is a beauty to the cherry liqueur and kirsch flavors in the supple textured finish. If you like your wines young, or have no patience, you can open a bottle. But if you have a cold cellar, and can manage to wait 5-10 more years, this will be a stunner. Produced from a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, the harvest took place starting September 20 and finished October 5.

  • If this bottle is any indication, stay out of this wine for the next 5+ years at least. Waiting another 10+ probably better still. Very closed after several hours in the decanter and another few hours at the table. Even took the remainder of my glass to the guest bedroom with me, and the wine just wouldn't wake up. It did show some fleeting hints of brilliance from the perfume and taste/concentration upon opening, but overall we found this in a very cranky, unyielding mood. From a friend's cellar.

  • Of all the wines at this tasting, relative to perceptions of the vintage, my expectations were the highest for the 2006 Mouton Rothschild. I heard that Parker initially rated it equal to, or slightly above, above the 2005. I expected it to be a lot different to the 2005 but I was more struck by the similarities. It had a bit of saddle leather on the slightly sweaty nose, some minerals, lead pencil, gravel and liquid coal. Like the 2005 it was buttressed by a fortress of forbidding tannins, but without the same mid-palate density or intensity and power of the previous vintage. It is medium to full-bodied, and like the 2005 it needs to be left well alone. In about ten years, this could develop in to a worthy wine, but I doubt it will ever turn into a great Mouton. Relative to my expectations I was a tad disappointed.

  • Much drier and tighter than the 2005, Mouton has outperformed in 2006 (although I prefer Latour in Paulliac that year). More wood tannin is noticeable to me - the tannins aren't as ripe and fine as in 2005. Finish is good - 30 secs - and more Paulliac typicity than in 2005... Plusher and with more graphite. Lots of acidity but less 'fresh' than the 2008. This will keep improving and could be even better in a decade. Potentially good relative value (I prefer it already to 2015 and 2008, although I seemed to like this more than other people).

96pts for me. My order of favourite recent Mouton vintages is 2010, 2009, 2005, 2006

  • Mouton Rothschild Vertical

Matter of Taste Masterclass Verticals of Mouton Rothschild with Philippe Philippe Dallhuin and Neal Martin

Wines tasted 2005-13 from bottle and 2014 & 2015 barrel samples - all wines were decanted for a couple of hours before the tasting and spent considerable time in glass (between 1-3 hours).

2005: Initial impression was this was much more developed then I thought. Compared to other 2005 left banks wines I tried recently (Montrose, Poyferre, Grand Puy Lacoste). Some bricking around the edges (visually certainly the most developed of the whole line-up), displaying great creme de cassis, tobacco leaf and cedar. I could have drank a bottle of this wine now the way it showed without thinking it would be a crime. Certainly it should develop nicely -it’s got this lovely acidity that should ensure this will keep going for decades. Very impressive. 97-99

2006: Tasted after the 05 this came across as fairly closed and had a short finish compared to the previous wine. Visually some bricking around the edges but not as developed looking as 05. I felt it needed a lot of time in bottle and in my book this was nowhere near the 2005 (or some other vintages in this line-up incl 2008 & 2012). Neal Martin liked the graphite and in general RP has in the past rated this wine over the 05. The Group was divided and there was a fair amount of people that had a preference for the 06 vs the 05, some said they found the 06 more approachable. I certainly prefer the Cos d’Estournel 2006 over this which I have had a couple of times. 91-93 (PS I know the critics think this is a fantastic wine so maybe I am just not getting this at this point, this was probably the disappointment for me of the tasting in terms of anticipation of this wine).

2007: One of the disappointing wines of the vertical. It was weird both on the nose and the palate - on the nose I thought I picked up some distracting glue aromas and on the palate nothing really dominated - there was decent acidity but with a lack of fruit to go with it. All the 2007 I had lately were unimpressive. Same here. Avoid. 86-88

2008: One of the positive surprises of the tasting. After the 2006 & 07 like a knight in shining armour to lift the drop in quality from going from 05 to 06 to 07. I found this already really enjoyable now. Beautiful cuban cigar on the nose and a long finish with a beautiful vanilla aftertaste. This is a gentle wine, slightly feminine. Pretty, No doubt 2 step up from the 07. Better then 06! 94-96

2009: Noticeably darker in color then the wine preceding it. Dark crimson / black cherry colour. WOW! This does hit all your taste buds from the first sip. A monument of a wine and you can just say what a privilege to try this (and the 2010). This is destined for perfection. It does make you feel sorry for Philippe and Mouton that Parker rated this 99+ and 99 in his last reviews in 2012 & 2014. I think it would have deserved to be another RP 100er in that vintage. 98-100

2010: After the 2009 came along the 2010. Another WOW! Almost black in colour (yet again darker then the 09). It does humble you to taste these great two vintages together and it dwarfs all (maybe with the slight exception of 05) all the other wines in this beautiful vertical. The 2010 is surely more classic then the 2009. It has more Pauillac typically. Neal Martin preferred the 2010 over the 2009. So long - pinnacle of Pauillac? This or 09. It’s not for me to say. I’d love to get the chance to taste those two side by side again when they are more developed. Philippe made the analogy that 2009 is the Barbie and 2010 is the Ken. The quality of both wines is such that after a very long decant you could actually be enjoying them already. But of course you would deprive yourself of an even more rewarding experience way further down the line. 2x Bravo! Mouton for 09 & 10.

2011: Difficult to be up after the 09 & 10. I needed to go back to the 06 first to “re-calibrate” my taste buds and be in a position to try and fairly assess/score this wine. The 2011 was actually quite good I thought and was in a relatively approachable place. Some lovely acidity - the wine was light on its feet. Got some kirsch, some saddle leather. Could actually drink this now. An early drinker, but a good one. Positively surprised. 92-94

2012: Even better then the 2011. For my money best of the “2nd Tier” (after 05, 09, 10). Just a bit more of everything compared to 2011. Great fruit, forest floor, quite approachable now. Another early but fantastic drinker. Very positively surprised - impressive! 94-96

2013: Ughhh. Harsh - really vegetal. Hard to decide which is the worse vintage - 2007 or 2013. If this is the best of the 1st growth Medoc wines of the vintage as per RP I will try and never have another bottle of this vintage again. First and last. Avoid! 86-88

2014/15 Barrel Samples: No scores as I just don’t have enough opinion to opine. Neal Martin likes the 2014 but he thinks the 2015 will be clearly better still.

Summary: Fantastic event. For my money there is (not surprisingly) one clear top Tier (2009/10 - and then still belonging in Top tier the 2005 with a small distance behind the 2009&10. In terms of today’s drinking it’s the 05, but the 09 & 10 just have SO much potential); followed by Tier II which are vines from lesser vintage which I would consider having again and can recommend (2012, 2008) followed by Tier III which are wines that others will enjoy more then me and which I think are good wines and maybe I just picked them up in a weak spot and maybe am not that qualified to judge at present (2006, 2011) and the Bottom Tier which are wines to absolutely avoid (2007 & 2013) as I would not be happy even paying a fraction of the market price, in fact I just don’t enjoy them at all.

  • Modestly magnificent. Colour is a flawless translucent ruby. The perfection astounds me; a skilled gem cutter would stare in awe.

Palate is the epitome of elegance. Finishes on a high note. Noticeable more gentle than the 2005, like Tinkerbell effortlessly flapping her elegant wings.

  • Young, OK, very young, but there is a lot to like here, with its fragrant nose of cassis, lead pencil, earth, spice, tobacco and blackberry filled perfume. Opulent, silky, round and concentrated, give it 10 more years to come around and it should score even better. At least I hope so. I'm sitting on my bottles patiently.

Sleek, cool and young with an exotic black fruit quality. Lovely spice on the long finish. A fairly full and very fine Mouton that is absolutely alluring and seductive underneath a wall of ripe tannins. A great Mouton in the making. 95+

  • Herbaceous nose eventually trending towards menthol. The fruit is secondary and complemented by sweet honeysuckle. The palate has not yet pulled together and requires time to integrate and mellow. Fine acid. Coffee and toast notes emerge with time. Clear upside potential here but not for current consumption. 1.5 hour decant. 93+

  • A Baby, but a nice one. Fruity phase with a lot of Tannins, already smoth and beginning of silky, no really secundary or tertiar aromas. long finish. Very pleased of this MR. We will see what will happen in the next 20 years. At this moment 96+ (50+5+14+18+9)

  • DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT OPENING THIS YET! YOU'D BE WASTING YOUR MONEY!

Insanely closed down. I'd give it 20 years or more before I'd go back. The nose alone took a solid hour of swirling before hints of black cherry, pencil lead, and slight Christmas spices emerged.

I palate is dense - like licking a wall. You are tasting an architectural blueprint for a wine, not the wine itself.

When I taste this wine again, I expect the review to really jump.

  • Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) (Palm Beach Gardens FL): Tasting, brief note. Cassis and dark chocolate aromas. Dense, dark fruit on palate with some dark roast coffee notes. Power and spice on finish. 93 or 94 points.

  • Friday after Thanksgiving II (Palm Beach Gardens, FL): Dark. Espresso and chocolate notes overlaid on classic purple fruit character. Tannic and young. Nice.

  • Just gorgeous, glossy, extremely complex fruit. I couldn't believe how open and expressive it was, but it didn't show any signs of being in any way short-lived. Not over-done at all, in fact kind of perfect.

  • Okhuysen tasting on Taste of Amsterdam 2006 Grand Cru Classé: I tasted this wine two years ago and at that time the wine was exuberant. Now it was more modest. Warm and spicey with blueberry, graphit, licorice and tobacco . Very nice thick tannins which are a bit dry. A very great wine. Let it rest for at least five years.

WOW!!!

  • Tasted about 9 months ago at an '06 horizontal-the wine of the night. Classic Pauillac, with tobacco, klicorice, brambly fruit. Ridiculously expensive, but pethaps worth it.

  • Light and pleasant, but though perhaps the best wine of the vintage, it's just hard to rave about this innocuous little wine. Many better bottles can be found in any decent wine shop, almost at random, for one-twentieth the price.

  • Has a rich nose with lots of coffee showing. The palate is surprisingly unrich - has power and persistence but a thinner, leaner profile than a lot of the 05s poured at this tasting. Shows restraint. Nice, but I'm not over the top about this yet; perhaps not the best time to taste it. Nevertheless, definitely in the 93-95+ point range.

  • This is again a great Mouton. Everything you can expect from a first growth Pauillac. Luxurious toasted oak, cedar, graphite, cassis etc. On the palate the cassis is in this stage most up front, but all the rest is also there. Good and soft, powerful tannin. Very well balanced. A great beauty in this primary stage. Will definitely be even a greater beauty well into the 2020s. Impressive wine! 97+

  • Fruits upfront . More animal then latour and also more closed. I had cedar on the nose but now it's gone
    Confiture
    Elagant tannins, very long
No more than a 93 (Still great, but a wine of over 1000 USD a bottle!)

  • Annual Grand Cru Tasting (Wijnhandel De Gouden Leeuw, Voorschoten, NL): First-rate Mouton, velvet and exotique, rich and deep, broad and incredibly smooth, big tannins completely covered by rich flesh, a stunning drink already and it will last for decades. Magnificent. The wine of the vintage without a doubt. A legend in the making. Drink now - 2060.

  • Tasted at the Gourmet Wine and Food Show, Toronto. Nose - Just lovely. Ample fruit. Nice complexity. A fantastic nose. Wow. Palette - Medium light body. Delicious fruit. Very interesting, fine and delicate fruit. Complex. Long finish. Definitely up there with some of the best wines I've drank. Probably the best. This wine will be fantastic in 5 years. But at $885 a bottle, the QPR is definitely low. This tasting cost $50 Cdn, but was well worth it. An enjoyable experience.

  • Dark plum coloured core that streaches all the way out to the rim. This looks very youthful.
The nose is open and rich. Lots of juicy berry notes, coffee and toffee aromas and a long dusty character.
The palate is dry with a wonderful forward floral intensity (Rose, Potpouri). Bright berry fruits and cranberry stick out a touch but at this stage of its life, its not worth worring about. Long opulant finish with big pencil lead notes. Great balance, this is going to be spectacular in 10+ years.

  • 2006 Mouton Rothschild is the wine of the vintage. It’s only 4 years old, and its potential is already clearly evident. The best wines offer a uniqueness of character and 2006 Mouton has that in spades! The aromatics explode from the glass. The complex perfume is filled with primary scents of smoke, caramel, tar, espresso, coffee, chocolate, spicy black cherry and cassis. This dense wine is extremely rich and offers multiple layers of fruit and freshness. It coats your palate with a finish that lasts close to 60 seconds! The fruit displays an intense purity that is hard to find. Consumers wanting to own a great vintage of Mouton should be laying down the 2006. In my opinion, in the years to come, this will be considered one of the legendary vintages of Mouton Rothschild. While it’s expensive, it sells for less than other recent vintages like 2000, 2005 and 2009 and this is a better wine! 99 Pts

  • Not what I expected. Was expecting a really tight and astringint underages Bordeaux. Instead I found it to be fuller bodied and very interesting. On the nose it was gamey with hints of coffee. These qualities caried over to the palate along with an acceptablely tannic finish. Would love to revisit in a few years.
