Drunk at Crown Super Deluxe in Hong Kong - This was quite a revelation for me given I was expecting to have to pick oak chips from my teeth before this was opened. Firstly, it is a brilliantly well integrated wine which suggests it is probably at its peak, albeit not even close to decline. There is a richness almost honied note on the nose, followed by a fullness in the mouth that is almost Montrachet like. Yet it doesn't lack in minerality or acidity and this is probably what holds it perfectly in place in your glass for the duration of the evening. Definitely a wine to seek out.

From a magnum. A tremendously balanced wine, perfect assimilation of fruit and stone, wood and minerallity, acidity and cream. More beautiful than powerhouse this wine is a tribute to great Cali Chardonnay.
Given last nights Chardonnay lineup this stood out and was the WOTN.

Three Bordeaux 1985s (Friends' House, Hong Kong): Tasted double-blind on a completely clean palate because our host wanted an unbiased second opinion on this wine. Briefly decanted. Deep candied yellow colour. Nose jumps out at you with slightly pongy tennis socks and sweaty tennis balls, very canided lemon and mandarin peel. Palate is immediately more acidiity-fresh than the nose would suggest but it quickly dissipates into the same candied lemon/mandarin orange (is that Meyer Lemon? I have never eaten one). Moderate length, little reverberance. Nothing to write home about here.....not overall surprised when it was revealed as Peter Michael because i have never been won over by their style and claimed quality.

Order out of Chaos (Ardeo, Washington DC): Popped and poured. Perhaps it could have used an extensive decant. This wine wasn't enjoyed by many at the tasting (esp given its price bracket). It was just a bit overdone, almost blowsy. The malo and oak treatment is so apparent on the nose (and in the cloudiness to the eye). Vanilla, oak spice, buttery/caramelized popcorn is balanced and very supple but it doesn't have enough precision to make it truly appealing. While I profess to drinking treated Cali Chards in my household (a departure from our traditional Franco-vinous roots), I always look for more precision, a lighter hand on the treatment and more aromatic complexity/layering.

2nd Annual Gem Dinner (Ardeo - Washington, DC): Nose was full of almond paste, lemon oil, smokey minerals, butter, and oak. Undoubtedly a well-made wine, just not my style. The alcohol spiked a bit for me, and the oak treatment seemed out of balance for me. I've had other modern California chardonnay producers that have made far more interesting/exciting cuvees.

Nice bottle with a hint of oak and nicely balanced acidity. Tastes of citrus primarily lemon but with the acidic edge smoothed off. Hint of glycerin at the finish. Drank side by side with a Kistler, Kistler vineyard. Drank them with some challenging food, Chilean Sea Bass in a ginger Teriyaki marinade, grilled Japanese eggplant and grilled asparagus with a tuna spread appetizer. The Kistler food combo could result in a fishy steely taste, especially with the tuna but not with with the Michael.

Truly spectacular on opening. Light golden color with the slightest haze. Opening nose redolent of lemon curd, butterscotch and pear. Thirty minutes in the glass and the nose closed down, but in the mouth acidity balanced with oak, lemon, pear, peach and vanilla. Surprisingly short on the finish which is why I cannot rate it higher. Incidenally, an hour and a half later a half glass fills the room with the smell of lemon and flowers. Very good stuff.

Winter Wine / Dinner Party: This wine was also spectacular, though more burgundian than the Aubert. Nose was very clean and subtle, with lemon custard. Group note included a sense of spring with this wine. A nice touch on this v cold night. Flavor profile was tremendous ... creamy, lemon custard, a touch of green leafy fruits and some tart acidity. A terrific finish as well.
This wine has a slight edge over the Aubert in voting for favorite Chard and finished ahead 6 votes to 5.

Drunk just before the '05 Kistler Durell. More mineral and austere than the Kistler, this is a great wine. It is focused and tight, showing nice acidity with citrusy notes with some iodine notes and some already well integrated smoky oak. I love this style.

Good bracing acidity, orange+honeysuckle nose, a nice toasty peachy apple mouth. The toasty oak is coating my mouth -- perhaps this is how George Washington felt after he got his new teeth. I'm glad I have five more of these beauties in the cellar. I think I'll open one of these and a Kongsgaard Judge (2005) tomorrow for the Presidential election returns.

Gold color. Citrus fruits and apple, minerals and a touch of sweet tropical fruits joining in after aeration; smoke, burnt sugar and subtle notes of buttered popcorn and oak spice. The use of oak on this chard seems perfect -- just enough to add complexity and richness without being overpowering (and I tend to be sensitive to oak in Chardonnay). Long lemony finish. Delicious stuff!

Perfect with seafood risotto (shrimp, scallops, crab) ... light lemon/citrus quality and just enough acidity to balance the rich creaminess of the risotto.

More nuance and less power than I am used to from a young PM Chard. Citrus oil, pears and a touch of honeysuckle. Crisp and surprisingly dry with nice acidity and overall balance. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

delicous, but was paired "against" a Kongsgaard "The Judge", so came across as a little less balanced. Rich texture, beautiful nose. Great mouthfeel, long finish. Flavors of butter, citrus were very much present. Very nice acidity.

Somewhere in between the '03 (which was spectacularly finesseful) and the '04 (which was ultraripe). It's not as overtly oaky as the '04, but the toast really does kick in on the superlong finish. Otherwise, it's the cloudy, crisp, sleek, tropical affair that so many of PM's Chards are. Just another winner from these always-reliable guys.

Still pretty tight. Less fruit and more flinty, with minerals and spice. Not as abundant as a typical PM chard, but still quite good.

It will be interesting to see how this develops.

yellow. Very citrus, lemon. Mouth was a mellow mix of tropical fruits with a lemon spritz on top. Very good. Yum.

yellow. Citrus, lemon, cinnamon in the nose. Taste was mellow, but a hint of acid on the end. Still, quite good.

This was a nice bottle. Not too much oak or over-extracted fruit. Lacked some body. Had quite a sophisticated taste but somehow was lacking compared to a Kistler Vine Hill or Kongsgaard.

delicous, but was paired "against" a Kongsgaard "The Judge", so came across as a little less balanced.

Awesome! I usually decant my PM chards when they are young. This one had a bit of airtime with the cork off. Great balance with lush pear and apple. Monster finish that lasts awhile. Great effort here

Slightly cloudy, unfiltered color. Intense, focused wine with a firm mineral core and juicy acidity. Ripe, rich flavors. Very good.

These arrived this week, so we thought we'd try one. Very good wine (albeit young), and we liked it a lot. Suggest waiting a few years here, but not too long.
