  • Always a consistent, reliable producer, this vintage is up there my other recent favorites of theirs (2014, 2016, 2019). It does need a lot of air though to show its potential at this stage, though; I decanted it for several hours then poured back into the bottle for several nights, and it showed better after the first night. If you just pop and pour this your rating will not be at all like mine, just be aware of that. (Out of the gates it was not super impressive, almost like a solid cotes du rhone.)
Hints of the smoky gravel and cinnamon notes to come, good midpalate presence, dark red fruits, and refreshing acidity. A wine all about balance and finesse, but has the stuffing to reward lots of cellar time. I see this going up several points with 10+ years under its belt and am happy to have a few to age. Rating: 92+

  • Very fruity, warby, a hint of fragrant. On the palate light and high acidity. Nice wine with some food. Not eaxtly great, but a solid wine .

  • Great...

  • Really enjoyed this. Deep purple in color. Nose is very expressive. Dark fruits up front including blackberry and ripe plum. Back half turns more cherry and floral. To me just excellent balance to be found here even at this young age. Consistent flowing tannins throughout the palate.

Opening to 4 hours in was quite consistent.

Day 2 - closed up a bit but still drinking well. Acidity pokes through more.

  • Langtons Bordeaux 2020 Arrival Tasting (Sydney, Australia): Not quite great but credible and balanced. Some reflection of the vintage in depth and length. 93-94

  • Plums, blackcurrants, clay, slight baked earth, sweet spice, a little pyrazine, biscuit, nice nose. Juicy tends to medium plus intensity acidity, fresh, fleshy fruit and tannins well integrated with the latter offering woody grip but fruit smothered staves with crushed black fruits, long, lovely.

  • Roses, plums, violets, dried herbs (oregano). Nicely integrated. Will be ready for drinking in next 5 years, but has plenty of structure to carry it through. 96

  • Decanted for an hour and finished on day two. Wild blackberries, chocolate pudding, wet tobacco, cassis and gravel. So much life and lift, with presence and poise. Full-bodied goodness, with a long, savory finish. Acidity and depth. A rocky aftertaste. So much personality this year: reminds me of the ‘09, with more elegance. This will age wonderfully. Drink 2026 -.

  • Magnificent DdC that stands with the 2019 as the finest of our era. It's plastered with Pessac personality right from the first sip, with evocative aromatics of road tar and burning campfires. The fruit is dark-toned but not without shades of snappy red energy. The tannins start out fairly muscular and grippy but midway through the bottle turn to cashmere, which makes it compulsively drinkable, i.e., no next-day leftovers to report on. Diam cork, so cellar and rest easy.

  • Beautiful mineral nose, pure fruit and a hint of green. Plummy red fruit, not in excess, silky mouthfeel with super tannins and a lot of mineral and savory notes. Super long, minty-cool finish. Delicious

  • Really wonderful wine. Young but very drinkable now. Wonderful nose of fresh red fruit, a bit of black fruit, and a bit of sweetness and earth. On the palate the wine has beautiful structure, depth, and pleasant fruit. A great blend of fruit and structure. Excellent for the price.

  • Very young (obviously) and very impressive. Garnet red. Glorious nose filled with red and black fruits, tobacco, espresso beans and new leather. Just hinting at future complexity. Medium bodied with nice texture and a long finish. This is going to be wonderful. There is ample tannin and strong acidity today. (95+)

  • Union Grands Crus Bordeaux (UGC) 2020 Tasting (Hangar 14, Bordeaux): Very young with tannins hiding the muted fruit with good acidity. Could not really get a reading on this so no score.

  • Bordeaux 2020 - 10 red & 1 sweet wine: Arrivage tasting by a merchant. Be aware, the sample size is quite small but here are a few observations: 1) Overall quality: This is another good vintage in Bordeaux but clearly not on the same level as 2016 or 2019. 2) Ripeness: What I tasted showed less ripe than 2015/18/19. Most wine show fresh dark and blue fruit, the two right banks showed well behaved too. None of the wines showed alcohol heat (a problem in many 18s and some 15s). Overall, I expected more ripeness but maybe the wineries I sampled all just got the picking date right. 3) Complexity: 2020 will not reach the heights of 2016 and for me is also a step or two behind 2015/18/19. 4) Precision: The precision was quite good, although not on the level of the 2016s. 5) Structural frame: The tannins are ripe but have more edges than in 16/18/19 and will need time to soften, the acidity is high and well-integrated, the texture is not as airy as in 2016 but a step above 15/18 and maybe even 19. Overall, the wines showed quite harmonious but without the magical balance of the 2016s (and the best 15/18/19s I had).

TN: Brief impressions. This was ok. There is a good freshness and the tannins are of good quality. This was one of the more elegant wines. What is missing today is a bit of sweetness. There is a bit of fruit but not enough and the wine seems a bit simple today. I guess age will help to bring the score up but today this was only around 91pts.

  • Showing a solid depth of color, the moment the wine hits the glass you find a wealth of black raspberries, cigar box, mint, oceanic influences, smoke, licorice, black currants, blackberries, bay leaf, and black raspberries in the nose. On the palate, the wine exudes an incredible purity of fruit, dark chocolate, and layers of ripe, dense, sensuously-textured black, red, and blue fruits that unfold seamlessly across your palate, and linger for close to 50 seconds. There is lift, energy, volume, and depth on the palate finishing with waves of dark red currants, creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, blackberry, savory herbs, and a gentle wisp of spearmint on the backend. Clearly, this is one of the great vintages of Domaine de Chevalier that fans of the estate should run, (not walk) to buy! Drink from 2026-2055.

  • Red fruits, hints of tobacco on the nose. More tannic structure, will need time to integrate. Plums (R&D), Cherries, very nice sapidity. A very fine wine.

  • The 2020 vintage UGCB tasting in Amsterdam 03/06/2023 (Amsterdam): A smooth bouquet, lovely midtaste, but missing (at the moment?) the concentration of a really great vintage (in red), good, but firm tannins and good balance; a point more in the nearby future.

  • Tasted at the UGC at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. Like the de Fieuzal, excellent concentration and balance with red and black fruits but you would have thought this Pessac contained 15-20% cab franc for all the underripe, green, leafy notes on the nose and palate. In fact, it contained none at all. I am not averse to pyrazines, but this was too much. Perhaps some bottle age will change this wine. It’s clearly well made but not for me. 14% ABV. No score.

  • Nose is a little subdued, though the warm black-fruited elements found on the nose and palate are certainly pleasant. Medium+ body and well-balanced with a solid but not inspirational finish. Perhaps really in a tunnel or an odd sample, because I simply don't see the 95+ scores on CT in this bottle.

November 2022 in Zürich) www.vvwine.ch

  • At a tasting of recently bottled 2020s. Very good nose. 2020 is generally soft vintage and this has moderate tannins, which is more than most. Good balance, body and length.

  • Arvi Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage (Dolder Grand, Zurich): Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).

    Tasting note:
More blueberry type of fruit with dried herbs, leather and barnyard on the side. Seemingly a darker aroma profile compared to SHL. Nice intensity, but lacking a bit the sweet and ripe fruit. The palate was pretty wild, grasping for balance.

  • Tiefer Duft mit fantastischer Holzwürze. Edelhölzer, feinster Tabak. Perfekt reie Frucht. Kompakter Geschmack mit packender Tanninstruktur. Filigran, innervierend kühl, mineralisch durchdrungen, staubtrocken. Absolut klassisch. Wird Zeit brauchen. Ich liebe die Transparenz. 94-96

2028-2045 (April/Mai 2021)

  • Dark in color, the wine pops with notes of Cuban cigars, smoke, black currants, flowers, blackberries, forest leaf and an intriguing hint of orange rind at the end of the nose. Full-bodied, plush, polished and well-defined, every layer offers nuance with silk and velvet textures. There is lift, energy, volume and depth on the palate, finishing with waves of dark red currants, creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, blackberry, savory herbs and a gentle wisp of spearmint on the backend. It is going to be quite a treat comparing 2018, 2019 and 2020 over the years. I am certain this will age and evolve for at least 3 decades or more from here. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 3 % Cabernet Franc 13.7% ABV. 96-98

  • Vibrant and mesmerizing magenta rim with a deep and dark core. Expressive nose with spices and floral characteristics. More of the same on the palate along with red and blue fruits. The concentration and depth is immediately apparent. Very Pure with silky textures. With a multi-dimensional mid palate that leads to a long and focused finish. Expansive with plenty of substance. Already stunning with much promise. This 2020 DDC rouge completes a great trilogy of vintages. Looking forward to revisit this juice once bottled. 96-98 points.

  • Airoldi - Bordeaux En Primeur 2020 (Quay Restaurant, International Passenger Terminal, Sydney): Red and blackcurrant, cream, plum, cedar, slight sweet spice, a little alcohol prickle. in the mouth it's juicy, savoury, wet, tannins are chalky and this feels a little skinny and lightweight as well as a touch out of whack. Not on this tasting.

  • One of the better in the line of 2020 samples. This will be good one to follow as the vintage develops.

  • Near opaque
Graphite-tinged nose of super purity, notes of cassis, and rich plump red fruits.
Lovely energy, super freshness and no little charm. Stimulating too.

  • Gorgeous nose: lovely sweet and plump mix, super freshness and poise, great clarity and purity.
So nicely lifted on the palate, quite Burgundian, with great definition throughout. Notably elegant, in the best sense, fresh and lithe, and long. Oozes class.
