Last bottle of these. In a lovely place. Nose of blackcurrant fruit and graphite. Still very fruit-forward, it has a slightly creamy texture and a bit of grip. Good.

The nose is a classical claret with black fruit and graphite. Good intensity of flavour with black fruit and green herbs on the back of the palate. Slight creaminess to the texture.

Quite resolved with cassis, mushrooms and iron filings on the nose. Lovely balance, good mid-palate life. Quite peppery red fruited profile. It was put in a good flight and was no slouch.

Classic aromas of blackcurrant and graphite. The plate is quite fruit-forward and youthful, with creamy black fruits, a silky texture and a touch of grip. Very enjoyable.

Tasting at Max Bordeaux. Nose is definitely complex with age. Much more muted but feels mature and well integrated. Leather and dried cherries. On the palette, it’s surprisingly still lightly tannic with so much complexity. The finish is medium and lasts 20 seconds. From a weaker classic vintage, it’s interesting to taste side by side with the 2016 Beychevelle. Both Saint Julien. 93.

This is a decent showing in a very average year. However, I am starting to find it less enjoyable as the fruit recedes exposing some unforgiving tannins. I do think this was a wine to be enjoyed in its younger years and lacking a structure to age well.

Dark ruby in color. Dark fruit with a smoky hint on a rather earthy nose. Dark plum with cedar wood and some freshness on the palate. I find it rather elegant with a bit of peppery bite. Lovely.

First of four. Bottle opened fourteen hours in advance of a nice lunch with friends. Decanted just with service proposal. Honestly last third needed a filter. Pristine cork. Pitch dark colour with brick edges. Initially as expected, horse sweat and drain. After all those hours breathing rotten roses, fleshy, minty, earthy, spiced notes emerged. Also mineral hints, mainly sand, and box cigar. Lovely complexity. On the palate showed softie as a good St. Julien, with a silky texture, central acidity, tamed tannins and a red berries finish. Not so long anyway. Considering this lesser vintage, this is a very nice bottle. Surprised it was better than 2003 I had a few years ago. Gonna compare it with a 2002 Leoville Barton sooner than later.

Dense ruby. Cedar and mid to dark red fruit on the nose. Similar on the folly styled palate, enough fruit and padding without being overblown, a lovely line with fresh acidity and a cool balance. Traditionally styled claret. Still near the top of a case and looking forward to working through them in the next few years. Fully ready now. ****

My daughter celebrated her 19th birthday and to commiserate this wonderful occasion, we opened up this bottle. Despite not being a vintage year, the wine was outstanding. Tannins were well balanced and structured. A bit of fruit but more earthy flavours. Well done.

Blackcurrant, cedar, cherry, wood and some slight earth on the relatively classic Left Bank Bordeaux nose. The medium-bodied palate adds some spiciness and decent acidity. Medium but still grippy tannins and quite long finish, tapering towards the acids and the tannins. Stylish and elegant, but not extraordinary. Considering the vintage, still a success, and at 12.5% ABV, really drinkable and enjoyable. Drink up or hold for a short while, as probably the fruit will fade before notable tertiary tone development...

Dark red rim, black red centre, some light through. Sediment well settled.. Open 1 hr, nose begins to emerge. Medium weight, dry on front of mouth and tannic on teeth, fruit and mellow savouriness emerge and then dominate the finish. Lingers for at least a minute. Now quite delicate, so will drink up my last remaining bottle soon. For future reference, I’ve got most pleasure drinking it 50 - 75% though the drinking window.

A bit of tart acidity and some herby ethanol smell. I thought it needed time to air, but did not improve. Strange character on this one as it did not show traditional corking or oxidation. Still flawed...

In a below average vintage, this more than holds its own and matches wines double or even triple the price. It has peaked, but seems to have the legs to stay at this level for a good few years and perhaps even mature further with tertiary notes. This benefits from 2 or 3 hours in the decanter. The nose and palate are still packed with fruit and it is surprisingly fresh on the palate. However, as previously noted it does lack real depth and is a little one dimensional, and an imbalance on the finish leaves an unwanted tannic aftertaste. All in all this is an enjoyable drink and decent value for money.

Belle bouteille provenant d’un millésime que je n’affectionne pas particulièrement à Bordeaux. Assez classique, très St-Julien, cassis, cerise noire, framboise, terreux et un peu animal. Dernière bouteille malheureusement...

1/12 Quite lush and expressive when opened, decanted an hour and it’s a lovely drink. Classic St Julien profile, some red fruit in with the more blackcurranty, and a lovely balance between resolved tannin, fruit and acidity. This is more rounded and with more interest than a recent 96. A sense of light-hearted joyousness here, not the most serious of vintages but very pleasurable and a lot of fun. ****

Great wine, tasted next to the 2003 (the 2002 is by far the better wine). Loads of dark cherry and berries and leather. It’s almost full bodied and at its peak but in no rush. Given the vintages reputation I suspect this will be very good value if available still.

I concur with my note of a year ago, that this has peaked, and is in its prime. A longer decant this time seems to have improved the experience. The fruit is ripe with blackcurrant and blackberry combining with tobacco. I agree with other reviews in that it lacks depth and complexity mid palate. That said, it is a highly enjoyable drink with a very good finish, and should stay at this level for the next few years.

The colour remains fairly deep red, with just a little fading at the edges. The bouquet is very fine: ripe fruit, with notes of mocha and tobacco. On the palate, though, the wine is a little hollow in the mid-taste, before finishing on a relatively astringent aftertaste. Overall, a good wine for the year but lacking generosity and complexity.
This was one of a case I bought on release. The wine hasn't changed much over the past four or five years. It's obviously fully mature now, but I wonder if it might be one of those wines which has a surprisingly long life, the acidity keeping it fresh, and perhaps developing more tertiary notes in the future.

Not a wine for the long haul, it has peaked and is not going to improve. Given the year and the estate, it is a surprisingly good wine and very approachable. The nose is deep and aromatic, but it is not really matched by the palate which is singular layered and over dominated by tannin. Likewise the finish is unbalanced and acrid towards the end. All in all it is good value for money if bought a few years ago, and enjoyable.

Needs a decant for an hour or so to smooth out the edges. Beautiful nose. Palate not of the same calibre- good but I was expecting more given the pedigree. Still enjoyable ....probably at its peak.

This is my last of this vintage. Whilst enjoyable, I was slightly underwhelmed and left wanting for something more. Temperature controlled storage for many years. Served to accompany beef wellington. This is clearly at its peak, possibly on the downward slope. Blackcurrant with some earthiness, silky, fresh ripe fruit. Good length. Yes, all to be expected with a decent Bordeaux of this age, but I was still left thinking it should have been even better.

A typical old style left bank Bordeaux, it is quite gripping on the palate. There is mature fruit on the palate, and everything is in balance. The finish is a little sour, but a good value drinking wine, if bought on release. Do decant for an hour, but I do not think that there is further development with the wine, but it should stay here for a good while.

Less serious and brooding but much more buxom and welcoming than the Leoville, this is in no way its inferior. Beautiful lush raspberry, pencil, cedar nose with a lipsticky accent, this is utterly charming and disappears so quickly. Delicious wine; so successful for 2002. 92-93.

Drinking well, it seemed to be a little more austere than a year ago. The nose is expansive with dark berry fruits, while the palate is rather lean with tobacco prominent with a background of fruit. The depth is good but it is a little one dimensional, and the finish is rather short. I feel that the wine has reached its plateau, and its essential characteristics are not going to change. An hour in the decanter is recommended.

A St. Julien red from an often overlooked vintage. 12,5% alcohol.
Dark, almost completely opaque black cherry color with a hint of developed maroon hue towards the rim. The nose feels savory, dusty and very classical in style with aromas of wizened dark berries, woody pencil shavings, some leafy tones, a little bit of moist pipe tobacco, hints of cracking dry leather and a touch of savory oak spice. The wine is dry, medium-bodied and surprisingly dense yet quite lean on the palate with classic claret notes of pencil shavings, fresh blackcurrant-driven dark fruits, a little bit of pruney dark fruits and a touch of cedar on the palate. The wine is very pretty and harmonious with moderately high acidity and somewhat grippy and firm tannins. The finish is long, savory and complex with somewhat matured flavors of wizened dark fruits, blackcurrants, a little bit of tobacco, a hint of graphite and a touch of leather.
A nice, firm and classic claret with good balance and still lots of life ahead despite the generally overlooked vintage. The wine is not a youngster anymore, but I have no doubts that the wine couldn't continue to develop for 5-10 years more. Will probably keep for another 15 or so years. Very nice and enjoyable effort.

Much improved over the last year, this has developed into a very elegant wine. Deep fruity notes of blackberry and blackcurrent pervade on the nose with firm tannin and tobacco combining with the fruit on the palate. It possesses good balance and has a satisfying finish. In its perfect spot now, there is no reason not to be drinking this.

Deep pretty opaque colour, string legs. Leather, blackcurrant, cedar, graphite and a little mint. It's mainly blackcurrant and cedar in the mouth and has a proper start, middle and end. Only a few very fine tannins remaining. Pretty classic savoury St Julien from a lesser vintage which is drinking well now and will hold on this plateau for a few years yet.

Dark plum to inky, completely dense; sweet stalky cassis nose, quite heavy; on palate, solid, soft and good integration of muted tannin, wood and berry fruit. Rather austere with no real complexity, but a wine at its prime, with everything crafted together in a fully mature unit. 91 points (but for those who appreciate a fully developed claret - albeit in the old pre-Parker style - probably more).

Colour of dense, dark plum; on nose spicy cigar box and berry, a little subdued; rather thin on palate, but elegant and a good integration of components (earthy tones, cherry, cedar and soft tannin), with reasonable length. A pleasant if undemanding wine, well made but lacking depth, and probably drying out.

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, split bottle over 3 hours. This was showing very well, as expected. The nose is excellent with cassis, damp earth, dark berry fruit, and pencil. The palate is consistent with a medium plus body, earth, mineral, dusty fine tannins, pencil, and cassis, with the fruit lagging bit compared to the palate. Better two years ago, but still very good now. I'd suggest moving through these though.

Good. Proper claret. Fine nose, powerful, spreads out of the glass; forest floor and cedar. Wine is correct; perhaps a little austere. Maybe a little dry in the middle. Good linger. Still has a decade of life left in it, easy.

Exotische Gewürze, wie Rosenpfeffer, Koriander und Kreuzkümmel. Erdig, Süßholzwurzel, Trüffelpralinen, Ton, Kirsche, rote Johannisbeere, Bleistiftspitze, vordergründigere Säure. Sehr feine, gut integrierte Tannine. Elegant, geschliffen und femininer Wein. Schön gereift, mit noch genügend Potenzial für weitere 5 Jahre. Langer Abgang.

Astonishingly deep color with no signs of tiring out! Delicious red-fruited nose! A surprise, all what you would expect from claret. Drank on its own, no decant. A shame modern bordeaux no more can be like this example. Only the prices haven't checked this out...

From memory so no details (drank at Beth and Arthur's wedding reception, from a magnum). Good deep colour, not showing signs of serious age. Fruit. Classic claret with good supporting tannins still. This was excellent from a magnum. Drinking well now.
Black centre, red rim. Cedar and fruit on nose, true on palate, medium weight in mouth, rather dry in middle, tannins pronounced. Lingers well, cigar box finish. Good with food but past its best. Fruit going.

Sunday lunch wine. Claret in the traditional, savoury sense undistracted by flesh and fruit in this vintage but no less appealing. Slightly one dimensional, but should provide lip smacking pleasure over the next 5 - 10 years.

The first of the 2002 grand Crus I've had. I wasn't expecting much given the general consensus of the vintage and maybe that's why I loved this wine so much but it's fantastic. Well rounded, smooth and a sensational effort for me with a sweet longish finish. A real food wine and probably great value. These wines should be snapped up!!!

2nd bottle. This time it seems to have greater intensity. Classic cabernet dominant wine (in a vintage where Merlot did not do well), plenty of fruit not dried out like some 2002.
Very good, and may get better still over the next five years.

Firm and still tannic, and showing more ripeness than many other Left Bank wines in this vintage, this masculine styled, youthful wine is starting to offer secondary characteristics with its tobacco, smoke, wet earth, cedar and peppery scents. Hold off for a few more years and this should be an even better wine.

Tight as a bow-string on the open, really quite unapproachable. Left the bottle open for 24h and it made a huge difference. See previous note, but even more mouth-filling an velvety smooth than a year ago, yet tannins still present together with the fairly intense fruit promises further aging. I am surprised that a 2002 can be this good, a really terrific QPR!

Decanted approximately 30 minutes prior to serving. Deep purple in the glass, with no bricking noted. On the nose, this is loaded with primary black fruit; blackcurrant, blackberries; graphite, bell pepper, foliage and cedar. On the palate, still showing immense structure, but certainly in balance with the copious amount of fruit. Blackberry, pyrazine, graphite and cedar notes dominate the palate, with some fine grained tannin gripping on the moderate length, slightly bitter finish. Blind, I never would have guessed 2002. From a cellar at 50 degrees, purchased on release. Needs 5-8 years before this is ready for prime time. Plenty of upside.

Nose of pyrazene, bell pepper, leaf, graphite, pencil lead, black currant. Palate shows cedar, leather, cherry, nutmeg, cassis, black currant liquor, graphite, pencil lead, mineral with great acidity....so young, painfully young. Blind I would guess 2008. This has miles to go and more of a cerebral exercise than for pleasure. Finish is medium with leather, cedar, and dark fruit....quite primary as well. Don't touch again until 2020

Fresh, medium weight and supple, with attractive fruit and reasonable balance. We kept some of this back to the next day (under vacuum) and drank it alongside the remains of a bottle of Ch Léoville Barton 2002. The Léoville was a fuller wine, but the Langoa was more harmonious and, although we gave then the same mark, on balance we preferred the Langoa.

Still black in the glass, but rim beginning to pale. Not much sediment in the bottle. Delicious now, plenty of fresh blackcurrant fruit. Smooth, mouth filling, coats the palate, but with the tannin to age. Still furs the teeth. Lingering cedar and fruit for a good two mins. Classic St Julien.

I just withdrew a case of this from my reserves at Berry Bros, based on a) the fact I snagged it on their online broking system for a very reasonable price of UK pounds 21.66 a bottle (i/b) - and at that price you have to make good on the bargain by drinking it - and, b) BBR’s evaluation was that it was ready to drink.
But I have to agree with KR66, below, who observes that this is ‘Still a bit on the young side.’ It’s a fine Bordeaux, offering much of what you’d expect - the aroma, the crisp precision of the taste, limpid clarity at first giving way to complexity; and a very decent length too - albeit one that is a little dry and tannic on the end, as KR88 observes.
It’s a very pleasing wine, but I feel it’s still a little tightly wound up - it needs time to loaf and invite its soul. So I’ll drink a few and put the rest back into storage.
A solid 90 here, but it seems very likely to me this has the stuffing to get to 95 with a few more years of waiting.

Impromtu Afternoon and Evening of Mixed Wines (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)): Very dark red-purple color. Slo-O for about 1.5hrs. Drank 2 glasses over 2+ hours. Open for business. Nose is fabulous, floral, cassis, red cherry, smoky, earth, dusty. The palate has good depth, nice texture, cassis, mineral, pencil lead, smoke, black cherry. Very nice from the front end through the mid palate to the finish, quite nicely rounded with no holes. What a pleasant surprise after waiting a long time for the right opportunity to try this wine. 92+pts and WOTN..

Opened early in the morning and left in bottle until evening. A great nose of pencil shavings, red and black currants, and a menthol-like freshness. Fruit on the attack, quite a mouth-filling mid-palate followed by a surprisingly long dry finish. So no great complexity to speak about, but balanced and smooth throughout - a positive surprise for both vintage and producer.
Another reason not to diss so-called "bad" vintages. This is a lovely wine. Three hour decant. On the nose, cedar, tobacco, menthol, blackcurrant and maybe some leather, if you really want to get carried away. And the palate sings, too: sweet tobacco-infused tannins, mouthfilling, with a nice acidic streak. This would easily be scored as a more fancy wine from a more vaunted vintage, if tasted blind. A classic old-style Bordeaux, with heft, character and - most important - charm.
Quite mature, and a decent effort from a not particularly good vintage; good blackcurrant fruit and some depth. A bit dry and hard on the finish, but otherwise very good.

Slow-oxed for 15h. Classic Bordeaux nose of Cassis, gravel and black currents, but surprisingly sweet and deep for the wine. Tannins smooth and resolved. Great balance and depth. The finish is short, however, 10-15 seconds at most, had it been longer this would have been 94+, as it is I think a great value 91-92

Quite fresh, even youthful claret, with good depth of flavour, blackcurrant fruit and classic claret style. Not really ready yet, but to me a lot better than most of the tasting notes suggest. Good fruity nose with blackberries, plums, leather, underbrush, mushrooms and juicy meat. Later tobacco and peppery, spicy notes. Good freshness, oak almost resolved. On the palate pretty dense and fullbodied. A lot more balanced than you would expect from a 2002. A severe, rather classical Bordeaux built for the long term. I wouldn't be surprised when this would even get better.

Vertical tasting of 94, 98 through to 05. Difficult to assess. Limited nose of dark fruits even after 3 hours in the decanter. A comparatively thin and green impression on the palate and the tannins are still tough, but there is the promise of richer dark fruit flavours. The balance may come in time and it was recognisably in the same family as all the others.

At first opening, clearing the shoulder into a glass reveals a dark crimson colour, the nose is restrained as expected but hints at the dark fruit within as does the palatte. On the second day a good black cherry nose, softer, plumper, as with many good bordeaux patience pays dividends.

This Langoa Barton '02 is on the verge of readiness, mulberry/plum fruit nose and grippy tannins that fade to make way to cedar. Some green-ness at an early stage but could be due to the vintage/early harvest? 90+ pts as still some improvement to come if left in cellar for a while

cedar and blackberry and sweet cassis on the nose, this opens up further to give us some tobacco notes and toasty oak. Good mouth feel, moderate fine tannins integrating well, letting the luscious blackberries to envelope the tongue, graphite intermingles with this and there is white pepper in the finish. Fresh acidity and good balance give this a moderately long finish, there is no building of flavour in the mid palate to give this wine the wow factor. Still youthful, but progressing well, will look in in a few years time, but susprct it will hit it's heights in around 5 years time. (88-90)

Wine Education Service Chateau Langoa Barton Vertical (Imperial College, London): This gets my vote for a good value Langoa Barton vintage which is drinking well now, but could be laid down for a few more years yet too. Nicely aromatic nose, cassis and plum fruit, baked, smoky with some mixed spice. Palate has a lovely juicy velvet feel. Just slips down effortlessly. Long, layered and interesting.

Surprenant de jeunesse, robe encore très dense, aucun signe de fatigue. Nez sur la réserve avec un fruité très cabernet, graphite, cuir. Another bottle that did not live up to the first one....... This might have been due to the drinking order as we poped this at the end of night after dessert.....it tasted much thinner and was noticeably less complex.....still nice but not the layers and complexity that I had in that initial bottle

Decanted for 1 hour Nose shows dark plums, cherries, pyrazene, and black currants Palate shows dark cherries, subtle celery seed, plums, graphite, and black raspberry with medium tannin and acid. Finish is dominated by pyrazenes, is a bit hot and not nearly as expressive or integrated as other bottles......alltogether this is a bit of let down from other bottles that I have scored as high as 94 points.

Good claret at the price £24, quite tight at 1st but lots of cassis / blackcurrant, opened up well over the evening. Nice and juicy at the start then the tannins were drying on the finish, good with food. My idea of St julien.

Color is dark garnet/purple with a hint of lightening at the rim. Nose shows cassis, cedar, and resin. On the palate, the substantial cassis component is framed by drying tannins and acidity that is well in check. Additional flavors include tobacco and an herbaceous quality. A wine with a lot of stuffing that improved considerably after 2 hrs in a decanter.

Deep and powerfully fruity on the front, deliciously sweet and fine at the end. Gorgeous, fresh feminine nose of pine, sweet cloves, juniper and ripe black cassis liquor. Firm but welcome tannin. Utterly delicious. 94

This is mature, soft and with a light structure, but well-made for the vintage. Good drinking now and unlikely to improve.

Wow. Much better than i hoped for. Elegant red fruits, good structure and a long silky finish with notes of cedar and tabacco. This wine has developed very well and is now one of the more elegant selections fo the vintage.

Soft, ripe fruit, drinking pleasantly now but without great structure or depth. However, for the vintage, it is quite a success.

There seems to be quite a bit of tannin on the finish and the wine was somewhat closed at first, although it did open up with time. There is the potential for it to improve further, although it is enjoyable now.
