Deep ruby. Ripe dark fruit, soil, light green elements, and a bit of gaminess. Medium to full bodied. Perfectly ripe darker fruit mixed with earth and herb. Round melting tannins and superb acidity. Almost completely mature with both the power of the site and finessed complexity. Superb bottle. Nuits St. Georges doesn't get any better than this.

True to terror and a very impressionable wine. Earthy, dirty, muddy, but then there are rose petal and ripe dark berries characteristic of the excellent vintage fruit quality. Chewy and grippy on the finish, really an intensely concentrated NSG. 92-93

PnP an hour before decanting then served. Medium red with some bricking at the edge. Gorgeous classic Nuits nose; dark red fruits and minerality. Lovely fruit on the palate with little or no tannins to resolve. Quite remarkably youthful at age 24! This bottle was the best so far; hopefully 1 more to go!

PnP. Cellared since release; cork perfect. Medium red. Airy nose of red and black fruits and a touch of spice but not intense. Lovely smooth texture on the palate with iron and minerality balancing the red fruit. Finish is quite smooth with little in the way of tannins remaining. Nice but not great.

1 of 6 opened at 3:00 decanted and back in bottle at 6:00 served at 8:00. Initial nose was a little dirty, mostly blew off by 6:00. Fruit a little tart, medium density, acidity a little elevated, texture a little rough….I expected better, I am not sure if this was a sub par bottle or still needs further age to straighten itself out.

Deep and fairly dense ruby. Rich, earthy and nicely dark fruited nose. Similar on palate, fully resolved but a plush and enveloping velvety richness. Darker and denser and a little surlier than a previous bottle a month ago, sturdier without the flirtations with luxe that the previous bottle showed. Note, throws a heavy, fine sediment towards the end. ****

Smart, but with a sense of the slightly rumbunctious, though stopping short of truly unruly. Real depth and persistence here, and proper Nuits as befits is position on the southern side of the village. Maybe just needs a touch more complexity on the finish for absolutely top drawer, but not far off. Note, throws a heavy, fine sediment towards the end.

NSG Central Tasting (Chicago): Incredibly youthful with a big, bold nose fresh black and red cherry, spice and mineral accents. Terrific near Grand Cru concentration of rich and still primary black cherry. The spice and earthen notes are there, but still not intense and fully developed. Fruit and structure and in proportion. Upside from here and a wine that can go 20+ years (like the 66 Giroud Pruliers we had earlier in the tasting).

Decanted about 30 minutes before dinner. Dark red with some clearing at the age. Initially thi showed as a very secondary driven wine with herbal characteristics dominating. After an hour or so the dark red fruit rose dramatially and was clearly doinant. Then after more time this began to fade as did the rest of the palate impression. Fascinating showing at age 21; certainly drinkable now with some air but not near falling apart.

A lovely bottle of Nuits this needed prolonged aeration in the bottle ( Audouze style ) to show its best, like so many aged Red Burgundies. The colour was deep cherry red and the nose rich with dark cherry, cranberry, wild strawberry, star-anise and clove. The palate is rich in fruit character which coats a long finish of CdN limestone gravel character ! Sounds rough and tough but its quite fine yet distinctive in this line-up. Chevillon's wines have so much genuine character !

NSG Tasting - "North versus South" Popped and poured. Drank over 3 hours alongside a number of excellent NSGs. Soft red fruit, very balanced if not straightforward. Was expecting more tannin. Stylistically reminds of Lafarge. Old school Burgundy. Was overshadowed by Meo, Cathiard, Noellat, Liger-Belair and Gouges sadly. But still nice and enjoyable.

PnP. Perfect fill. Cork wet about half way; came out in one piece without an issue. Medium dark red; no browning. Deep smoky nose with dark fruit and mineral/iron. Very rich and dense on the palate initially, with a long finish; tannins buried in the fruit; intense. This is just beginning its drinking window at age 20; classic NSG.

Blind: guessed French Burg. Aromas of dark cherry and unripe strawberry. Palate has a Sandlewood note which has me scratching my head? Lean Syrah or Grenache? There's a dark plum flavor, huh.. Fine tannins and a light dry finish. Very nice. I ultimately settled on Pinot Noir. BTW the 99 Copain smoked this wine. Just sayin.

1999s poured blind, with a few unplanned extras (The Winery Restaurant in Newport Beach, CA (The OC)): For me, this showed some celery, spice box and even some tarry/bloody notes when I first tried it in my glass. Hmmm? Syrah? With air, to me this started to soften, with a fruit bowl/cherry quality to the fruit, a bit inky and dark, with some grainy tannin and finishing tang. Preferred the 1999 Copain Dennison we flighted next to it.

Medium rust colored with medium transparency. Aromas of sous bois and black truffle with hints of dried cherry and black tea. Palate hasn't developed the tertiary sweetness that I expect will come with more time, but this is mature in the flavor profile with cherry, truffle, and some game notes. No fireworks with this bottle, but I expect I will enjoy this more in the future. Decanting might have helped open this up. Drink or hold.

Alongside the '01. Some thought this to be mildly corked; if so, below my detection threshold. A robust wine that belies the vintage, with some slightly coarse tannins (that again, some felt were indicative of the flaw). Very different than the '01, which was sweeter and polished, and some guessed as a CA ringer. Will definitely wait a few years for the next bottle.

Overall impression, still a very vivid wine (both in smell and taste) after more than 18 years. Nose a bit reticent and very tertiary upon opening, but after giving it in 30 mins of air in the bottle this 99 Vaucrains reveals itself. Fruit is still very present (most but not all, tertiary), underlined with a fine acidity. It's still a Vaucrains, so still quite structured but with nicely integrated tannins.

Double decanted approximately 5 hours before drinking, tasted alongside '99 Chevillon Cailles and LSG. The three vineyards performed true to reputation in this tasting, with the Vaucrains being the firmest and most structured. It had the most of the NSG iron and blood aromas, along with dark cherry fruit and earth. The palate retains good fruit density, even though the texture is somewhat firm and austere. It's a very nice wine, and will surely continue to age for many years, though I doubt it will ever have the round, rich fruit of the LSG or the elegance and floral qualities of the Cailles.

Significant bottle variation. Again a bottle with a funky, barnyard, corky start but with time it blew off. Still, it is hard to look past that and so it colors the view of the wine. Almost undrinkable to start, but with an hour of air it comes into a reasonable place. Just not sure on this one as the bottle variation is significant.

Dark fruit and some soil notes, but all somewhat difficult to precisely attribute. Background minerality. Took 30 minutes to open. Good acid finish with a lot of time left. While clearly stylistically a Chevillon I found this to be somewhat less stereotypical than other vintages. 92-93

Absolutely amazing. Possibly the wine of the night at a 99, 01, 02 tasting. Full and bold with dark fruit, yet delicate and refined on the finish. Great acidity and polished in a flight setting or with Coq au Vin.

The best balance of red fruit and earth out of the 1999, 2000, and 2001. The wine is great but the palate doesn't quite keep to the the nose. Definitely more developed than either of the younger two, this showed an excellent combination soft strawberries and rustic underbrush culminating in a nearly perfect example of mature Les Vaucrains and Nuits St Georges in general. Would really like to find more of these.

Medium ruby center with maturing rim. Multidimensional Burgundian aromatics with an alluring mixture of cooler green elements, dark red fruit, stemminess, and a little woodsmoke. Medium to full bodied for Pinot with a miraculous combination of meatiness yet no sense of being ponderous. Perfectly ripe without any undue sweetness. More blue than red fruit, pomegranate, superb acidity, some residual tannin, excellent soil driven finish. Two years ago I said "better in 5+ years"; while that is undoubtedly true, I could not follow my own advice and hold off until 2018. No matter-it was also better in 2+ years! This is a dream Nuits that is progressing beautifully and will easily last another decade.

Fill 3/4 inch below foil. Cork soaked 1/2-3/4 way up. Still had that slight corky smell (not corked) when pulled, but it blew off quickly. Some maturity in the color. Not bad at all, and less disjointed, out of the bottle than previous bottles from this case. After an hour this was in great shape, drinking really well. Showing more of that ripe fruit and smooth, integrated, balanced finish I remember from my last first case. This was the first bottle from the new case showing more of what I expect of this wine. Hope the rest deliver. A-/A

Fill 1 5/8 below foil. Cork was dry but came out in one piece. Run up to about 1/4 inch short of the top but nothing beyond. This had a "corky" element to it when the squeaky cork came out, but that blew off over time (previous bottle was actually corked). Some maturity in the color. Wine was a little astringent and acidic at the decant, but after an hour it was in good shape. This was mature, showing ripe fruit, and was pleasant with dinner. But based on the first couple of bottles from this case it does not have the glory of my first lot. A-/?

Served along with a 2005 Drouhin Chambolle Musigny, this was still the "younger" wine. Three hours of air just started to make this open up, and it only began to show its cards at the 4+ hour mark. There is still plenty of dark red fruit, and balancing tannins. Where this wine shines is in terms of overall depth. It's not subtle or pretty. It's brooding and statuesque. I thought 15 years would be a good time to check in, but I won't be opening another until at least 2020.

2011 Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Gray market bottle. Deep ruby without any fading. This rapidly developed beautiful perfume of blue fruit and mint. Wonderful synthesis of amplitude and breadth with a certain airiness. Fresh, crisp fruit, firm acidity, increasing earth, and some tannic grip still to be resolved. Some late arriving dark chocolate. Outstanding wine in its early phase of maturity-better in 5+ years.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Easily identifiable as Burgundy, but I never would have thought this from NSG; however, this is an example of NSG's great successes in riper vintages. Intense, ripe and powerful black fruit with moderate spice, I thought this was from Gevrey! Lots of density, minerality and wonderful textures with very good balance and length.

Started at tasting table at Knightsbridge and finished at dinner 2 hours later. The wine was truly at its apogee. There were some beginning secondary flavors, but the dominant characteristic was the intense minerallity. Behind the mineral there was a nice core of dark fruits and spice. This was a lovely Vaucrains and showed how good an NSG can be at its best.

Brought to Gary Danko where popped and poured. Darker ruby. Nose exhibiting extraordinary volumes of florals and spice, plus earth and forest floor. Showed strong structure and still youthfully clenched on the palate, but with time in the glass revealed primary, pulpy plum and black cherry notes, along with anise, raspberry, leather, soy, and mineral. Marked acidity and serious tannin, with a long finish of tight, darker fruit and grip. Scored 93 today but could well exceed that in the future.

Drunk with the 99 Pruliers and Les St Georges. Well.. here we go. The most complete wine of the fantastic trio of 99s. More perfume and a flat out beguiling nose that has about all I can hope for in NSG. On the plate, the most texturally giving, deepest, purest of the three. Power and finesse all wrapped together. Everything is in perfect balance. Great sap, power without weight and just all around awesomeness. Early peak. I loved this wine. Complete. 96pts

Popped and poured. Cork in good shape, although wet most of the way up the side; fill still excellent. Dark red with clearing to the rim. Immediate nose which is classic NSG; iron and mineral. On the palate almost painful in intensity but not at all heavy and with significant tannins on the finish. Over a couple of hours and with rack of lamb this softened considerably but still has some tannins to resolve; I think this will really come together in the next 5 years.

Well this is awfully gorgeous, especially with a nicely grilled piece of Copper River sockeye. Pine needle and piercing perfume move to a remarkably energetic and youthful palate of pure, twangy, red fruit. Beneath that is a fair amount of umami and savory aspect with a surprising amount of tannin. Lots of goodness here. Still quite young but already rewarding at this stage.

Drank over 2 hours at Knightsbridge. The wine went through 3 stages. Initially, good weight, excellent nose of cherry and red fruits with good flavors of tart black cherry on the palate and very well-integrated tannins. After an hour in the decanter, the wine started to thin out a bit with a touch of green on the palate. Then the wine really began to blossom with the green stems integrating well into the overall tart cherry flavor profile. There were some secondary mushroom aromas on the nose. This wine is just nearing its peak and will be a great drink for several years to come. A very pleasant surprise after some tough bottles of Chevillon recently.

Cellared since release; first one I've opened. Clear ruby red, not as dark as I would have thought given some of the comments on this board. Quite closed and primary on the nose; considerably lighter on the palate that I expected for Vaucrains which can be quite massive. Developed nice smokey, gamey notes and gained some depth over the next few hours; corked the remainder. Next day - dramatically softer and richer, lovely palate intensity, with very nice balance but overall still in its infancy. I will wait a few years for the next one.

The best drinking burgundy that i have had in a while. only one more bottle left. i think this would be a desert island pick for me. this has the essence of what i personally look for in burgundy.... it has that wonderful baking spice and earthy aroma along with the classic candied red fruit. after about a half hour opened, the fruit really started showing. grabbed it out of the cellar on a whim with stuffed pork chops. perhaps the score is a bit high, but it is a great buzz and a one in ten botttle for me, meaning that i do not want the night to end. good stuff.

Just beginning to show some bricking at the rim. The nose shows a very distinct soil note and some dark fruits, but it has not opened up to give a ton of complexity yet. The palate has that friendly, juicy '99 fruit, but there's a strong mineral impression and firmness that gives this great cut and prepares for the still-significant tannins that frame the back end before the fruit fades into the finish. Still too young by a good 5 years, but clearly lots of potential and lovely balance of components.

Deep medium red, a little development on the rim. Depp and complex nose, but still feels relatively closed-in. Raspberries, spice, and earth - classic NSG profile. I thought it is a little further along than the Pruliers of the same vintage (which I actually like better in 1999). Showing a lot of structure and relatively little fruit on the palate. Impressive length with only modestly rustic tannins. Very good but I hope it will develop into something nicer down the road!

Oh my god, this is good! I'm not a Burgundy nut, but this wine is almost single-handedly enough to make me one. Although it's still so young, the depth and concentration this wine has while still being incredibly elegant and silky smooth is amazing. Deep, lush, and complex, with great texture and a long, expansive finish. To steal a line from Tanzer: A dead person could identify this as Burgundy.

This is what Burgundy is about: Deep and complex with perfectly balanced acidity all at 13.5 vol. Great now! I would guess it to be more or less on its peak.

Clear ruby red, not as dark as I would have thought given some of the
comments on this board. Quite closed and primary on the nose; considerably lighter on the palate that I expected
for Vaucrains which can be quite massive. Developed nice smokey, gamey notes and gained some depth over the
next few hours; corked the remainder. Next day - dramatically softer and richer, lovely palate intensity, with very
nice balance but overall still in its infancy.
