Fresh as a daisy and flawless. Pale yellow in the glass—looks like a brand new wine—with expressive aromatics, this is light and delicate on the palate with only subtle sweetness and intense minerals. Perfectly balanced and just approaching its peak. Not a blockbuster like the 01 but dare I say this might be just as good for what it is.

Prüm's 2002 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is just starting to open up and is very enjoyable today with an hour or two of air. Very fresh and fruit forward with an abundance of white peach, raspberry candy, roses, lime, roasted thyme, whipped cream and green apple. Pure and delicate, exceptional balance. Now - 2035

Very nice integration of sweetness for this Riesling - full golden colored. Nice ripe tropical fruits, with still elegant acidity that frames this wine all the way through. I liked this a lot

Thai and Riesling Night: [Thai and Riesling Night - Nine Rieslings] Much more oxidative and advanced than the 2005 Prum. Also more advanced than my first bottle. Matches my old notes to a degree, but this died after a hour of opening. Chalking it up to bottle variation here.
An aged JJ Prum is one of the most magical wines you can have! While young, JJ Prum can often come off as too sweet, too simple (fruity), and sometimes too predictable. With age, the integration of the sweetness and the fruit really transforms the wine into something absolutely heavenly.
On the nose, toasted coconut, coconut water, honey sweetened herbal tea, ripe peaches and almost fermenting pineapple. Pronounced intensity, ripe stone fruit and peaches slathered in light honey, light caramel, ripe apricot with the assumed racy acidity, dried tropical fruit, dried pineapples, floral notes, blossom, elderflower. Med+/high acid, medium dry (aftertaste of sweetness, but not overly so), med/med+ body, long long finish, up to 20-30 seconds with some sips.
I feel blessed to have 11 more bottles left of this, and even then I still wish I had more. The acidity is still readily apparent, bringing in freshness to the aged tertiary notes. I drank this over 5 days with it being preserved in my fridge, and it was still beautiful by the 5th day. The fruit transforms into a more honey-laden flavors as time progressed, from tropical fruit to ripe apricot. I can see this easily holding for another 5-10 years, but this is the prime time to drink this. This is peak JJ Prum and there is no time to waste!
I drank this along with the 2002 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Spatlese and I think I liked this Wehlener just a touch more. It was close, but the Wehlener tasted slightly fresher and had my preferred fruit notes, whereas the Graacher had more of the beeswax and slight woodiness to its tertiary complexity. Both were excellent and a dream to have, but I favored the Wehlener was favored in this first matchup. 94-95pts (Wehlener) vs 93 pts (Graacher).

Upon removal of the foil, the cork stemmed to be in a poor state. Thankfully it was just the top, and the wine was in great condition. Papaya, mango, wet slate and moderate petro on the nose. 20 years of age and yet so vibrant with fruit. Well balanced and nice Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Would not keep remaining bottles longer. Would have hoped for a longer finish.

The cork was in poor shape with leakage into the capsule. But the wine was delicious. Given the age and state of the cork, my recommendation is to drink soon.

PnP. To my palate, this is not only in a perfect place, it's in an exciting place. Loads of dry extract, with perfectly mature aromas and flavors, and also the vitality of plenty of fresh, clean acidity to balance everything out. Long finish. Strike that. LONG finish. Brilliant. recommended

Rocking bottle of Prum right from the get-go. To judge from the pale color alone you'd figure this was a new release. But it's moving nicely along its curve and has now reached the point where it tastes functionally dry despite carrying what must surely be an ample amount of RS. The fruit is all racy green apples. End result is textbook Mosel riesling with a rapier-like cut. I didn't notice until after getting this note down that I have an almost identical note on it from five years ago, so I'm guessing this is going to coast along like this for a long while.

PNP. This still needs a bit of air to settle down, but is drinking very well right now. Pretty straightforward wine for me, maybe a bit more secondaries to develop, but it is expansive on the palate with a long finish. Very enjoyable with cheese before dinner. A-

Thematic Thanksgiving (Los Gatos, California): Medium yellow. More secondary petrol scents than the Kabinett, but similar apple tones. Not sweeter than the lower Pradikat wine but broader and creamier. This bottle actually seemed closer to full maturity but retains fresh acidity too.

I was hoping for a bit more from this bottle. My wife brought it to a neighborhood poker game and by the time I got there it had warmed up a bit (probably around 60) but was still unopened. I opened it so I got to see it from the start. It didn't move a whole lot over 3 hours. Very good. Reasonably thick and oily with ripe tropical aromatics- apricot and very ripe peach. Good acidity but it was over all sort of monolithic. It didn't do the elegant multidimensional thing that these wines can do. This was actually my 3rd bottle. I neglected to write notes on the earlier two but my memory tells me that I liked it quite a bit in 2013 and 2016. As I seem to be working in 3 year intervals, I look forward to revisiting the remaining 2 bottles in 2022 and 2025.

There is a slight effervescence that is obvious as it settled into the decanter. Color in the glass is a pale to medium straw/yellow. It smells very fresh, clean and crisp with classic petrol, white peach and apple. It tastes of juicy ripe peach, apple, white pepper and a little petrol/resin. It gives the impression of sweetness, but it not sweet. The flavors are weighty but the wine is light and crisp. This is a very nice wine for Christmas afternoon. Very well done. I have the impression it could get better - more interesting on the finish with more petrol and spice, but it will be hard to wait - this is delicious.

Very nice. Dramatically different from new release. Medium gold. Thick and oily. Fragrant, smells like apricot and over-ripe peach. Really flavorful. Moderate sweet. But awfully simple, it’s one dimensional. Lives on its power. Impressive.

J.J. Prüm Whelener Sonnenuhr (Mostly Auslese) Dinner (Rouge Tomate): Wonderfully fresh nose with white florals and classic petrol. Whiffs of chlorine as well. Superior to the nose on the '01 which is both less fresh and expressive. Green apple and pear on the palate with a distinct spritz. Finish is long and delicious. This takes the first flight which includes a '90.

Drank side-by-side a 08 Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne, a 08 PYCM Puligny Montrachet Les Foletiered and a 02 J.J. Pruem Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spaetlaese and it was great fun to see how different the characteristics of these three excellent wines were. The Pruem was the easiest to drink and by a small margin also the best wine in my eyes. Great minerality and this almost sparkling freshness and crunchiness on the palate. A touch sweeter than the two Burgs but not too sweet, again with the acidity providing a great balance. Good finish too.

This has everything you wish for in a Spaetlese. Wehlehner Sonnenuhr being one of the best Riesling sites and JJ Prum one of the best producers, I am not surprised. Notes of petrol, mineral, white fruit, honey. Fantastic interplay between acidity and sweetness. Wow! As this is a Spaetlese "only" it is not too sweet and goes well with Cheese, spicy food and similar dishes. PS: I don't understand why wine critics always give higher score, the sweeter the Rieslings. Usually the scores increase from Kabinett, to Spaetlese, to Auslese to Eiswein. Why? The concentration and sweetness is just a preference not quality sign. I personally prefer GG, Kabinett to max Spaetlese type of sweetness.

Boom. This one is out of the park tonight. Loving the secondary development but also the persistent fruit. Not much to add to previous notes. This has the structure to go a long way but at my pace will not likely find out how long. The cork on is one was wet part way up but extremely spongy requiring Durand to get it out in one piece

AP #36. This had a slightly leaky cork but no harm done. Straw color, This wine is entering into maturity. Swishing highlights the utter balance between the dense acid structure and fruit which is predominantly grapefruit. The nose is dominated by TDN but under that I get get mixed yellow fruits. Sipping this shows how acid can lift the fruit and keep RS from seeming sweet. I really enjoy this now and look forward to further evolution.

AP#36 03. PNP. Cork wet halfway but sound. Color dark straw. Nose gives me lime rind and grapefruit w TDN and a faint whiff of SO2. Swishing shows slightly chalky acidity that keeps the RS that has not integrated perfectly balanced. Sipping starts off tangy with super polish showing a little more RS all leading into a harmonious med length finish. Picked this up at a recent auction and this is really superb. Plenty left in the tank but entering a wonderful drinking phase.

Second recent chance to taste this beauty without having to sacrifice one of my own bottles. Score! This is about as classic Mosel as you will ever find, with the recent fashion of putting dessert-wine auslese in a spatlese package having completely passed J.J. Prum by. It's sharp and steely with a serrated edge and a level of sweetness that would almost put this in halbtrocken territory if it were a recent release (and this was actually quite sweet when it came out - funny how Prum manages that and so many others, um, don't). The fruit complexion is still focused on the high notes but still shows some of the depth of bottle development, with a cidery green apple bite on a base of slate.

Monthly Tasting Group: Rieslings and Thai Food (Sen Yai Sen Lek, Mpls): Light-medium gold color. 3oz pour. Oh my, this was so good from the get go, bright on the nose with nectarine, pineapple, subtle fusil; on the palate this is full bodied, unctuous but not overtly sweet, textured and balanced, good acid, nectarine, tangerine, mineral, orange zest on an long finish.

Incredibly light color. Still primary aromas of apple and green citrus. Light, off dry, loads of slate, vanilla custard, pure fruit that is youthful and fresh. A delight now but no doubt better in 5+ years. Prototypical Mosel Spatlese.

Nice minerality and floral tones on the nose. Peach and a touch of freshly peeled orange rind. Nicely balanced and harmonious. I was left to drink the bottle alone - the wife couldn't take another sip. Opening this confirms that wines with any sweetness aren't her cup of tea.

Stunning right off the bat. Baby fat is all gone, leaving a rapier-sharp spine that is about as steely as any riesling I've had from this vintage or anything surrounding it. The fruit is pale and obviously no longer primary but still has a sort of pineapply brightness.

Popped and poured next to an '02 Donnhoff Brucke Spatlese. This is still a bit young, needing some air to settle down, but showing a bit of sulphur and edge. This is a more concentrated and striking wine than the more elegant and balanced Donnhoff, and was better with some air and with some food. I expect it might improve with a few more years but if opening now would give it some air. A-/?

On our first tour to Italy without parental guidiance, we stopped in Mosel, 2004? Whatever, we bought this gem there and just as I am writing this it stands in front of me holding maybe another glass. Excellent balanced sweetness. Almost to good to be true. Bought in Bernkastel on the way down or was it up. Time passes. And wine also. This one to remember.

Well this is freaking delicious and rounding into early drinking form very well. Not a lot of sulphur for a Prüm, although it is still pretty evident. Green apple interplaying with white peach and hints of white pepper. Gorgeously balanced albeit fairly full bodied for a Spätlese.

Not sure the provenance on this, seemed a bit advanced perhaps. Pop and pour but drank over 2 days. The nose was all petrol to the point of being off putting, but peach and apricot underneath. Pot Roast at my place; Prum, Raveneau, L'Aigueliere, Pichon Lalande, Rostaing, VT & Graham's (My place.): Like my niece, who now has one less birth year wine, this wine is showing a lot of youth. Still a little spritzy and showing some sulfur, it’s pretty tight at this stage, revealing not much more than flinty mineral, green apple and citrus and riveting structure. I put a cork on the remainder and on night two it’s loosened up a bit and broadened, showing rounder peach notes and a more floral character. Lose these in the cellar awhile. A-.

This wine was tasted in double-blind fashion at our Friday tasting session, having kindly been brought by John Pollack. Pale yellow robe with clear rim. Beautiful, intense nose of peaches, pears and honeysuckle. Medium-bodied on the palate, with nice crisp acidity and weight/sweetness commensurate with an Auslese. The flavors are similar to the nose and the finish is eternal. This is a wine that truly could be drunk all day long (especially since the alcoholic content is 7.5%). Drink now-12/20.

According to the person who brought this bottle, it had been opened for a dinner on Wednesday, two days before. At that time, it was highly sulphered and bretty, so he opened another bottle and recorked this back into the cellar.
Two days later, this was a beautiful wine. On the nose, peach, lemon, lime and a bit of spice/herbs. On the palate, a medium body that was very creamy and smooth, with more citrus, slate and minerals, and a long, moderately sweet finish. Beautifully balanced with moderate acidity. A real winner, I will let my bottles rest for quite a while.

Here's a Spatlese that's well out of my comfort zone as far as residual sugar goes -- it better suits my wife, a far more dedicated sweet-tooth than I -- but there's no denying how superbly well-made it is. It's packed with pineapple, peach, lime, and other almost tropical fruits, yet for all of the ripeness it doesn't lack for balance or nuance. Sure, it's not as edgy as I like my Rieslings -- that's why I personally favor Alsace -- but there's just enough acid for structure. The long, impressive finish shows a light floral touch in addition to the signature bread and slate tinges. For those who appreciate the softer, fruitier side of Riesling more than I do, this is a must-taste.

Nose of lemons and spicey pears, wet gravel and minerals. Initial attack is a slow build of perfectly balanced fruit, and well-delineated textural elements. Mouthcoating. Complexity and layering of cirus fruits, pears, and acidity in the midpalate and in the extended finish. Perfect balance. Significant retro-olefaction. Lovely wine and then some. What could be better with Thai food? Great young, but all the stuffing needed to age is very apparent.

Impressive.

After 1 day - Pale white yellow. Still some microscopic bubbles remaining. Sulfer smell has largely blown off. Pale aroma of white fruit. Noticeable sweetness on the palate. A little less acidic than yesterday. Overall a bit one dimensional. Nice long finish though. 89 pts. 7/04
Meium aroma of ripe fruit and mineral. Bubbly mouthful of candied green apple. Light on its feet. 90pts. 8/04

Very pale lemon-green. Ripe, white-apple nose, touch of lime on the nose. Slight spritz on the palate. Great length. Very classy.
