  • Impeccable bottle. No damage or leakage on the cork whatsoever.
Great array of fresh and dried flowers, black tea, red fruit and spices are bursting from the glass. On the palate the wine showcased great freshness and integrated tannins. Probably reached perfect drinking window 5 years ago and will continue in this stage for the next 2-4 years.

  • Mixed Italians (Terra Rossa, N1): This wine has such a distinctive character- that slightly synthetic hard candy strawberry jumps out of the glass, along with cherry and blackcurrant, spice, soy, sandalwood and a satisfying hint of brett. Round on the palate with some sweetness and nice silky concentration. Fine, fine tannins build to provide grip and structure. At a good stage of its evolution

  • Not as rich and vibrant as the bottle from 16 months ago. Perhaps it's reached its peak.

  • Side-by-side with the 2011. This is clearly more dense and layered yet both have the trademark elegant house style with olive and stem spice throughout. In a peak zone now and more ready than other 2004 Barolos.

  • PnP metallisk og lite lukt. Metallisk og forsiktig smak også. Svak. Tobakk, fast, solid fortsatt frukt.

  • Nose is still quite fruity, strawberry, plums, touch of liquorice and tea. Some mushroom as it warms a touch. Medium/full bodied, plum and dark cherrry fruit, liquorice, cool fruited and composed, fine tannins, quite long. Drinking well, excellent.

  • Color is still young looking. Nose is tarry, with a serious bit of olive background and some herbal note. Palate is remarkably young and bright for this age with very juicy nebbiolo fruit dominating and good acidity as well as some underlying spice. Then after about 45 min. the tannins start to kick in which adds a lively ending. I consider this still at its height and am putting my next bottle a year or so farther away.

  • This was drunk with great pleasure over a three hour period after a short decant. The wine is fully mature and I doubt it will evolve much further. An elegant exercise is restrain, sometimes Barolo reminds me of Pinot Noir, and I love pinot noir.

  • OCG’s Burlotto dinner (67 Pall Mall): Noticeably savoury and mature, especially after the flight of 2016s. Lovely balance. Clean and crisp in feel, with plentiful deep cherry fruit and a long juicy finish. Great wine, but lacked the perfume of the other Monvig vintages tonight.

  • Barolo 2004 tasting (My place): Barolo 2004 tasting. 8 wines blind. All opened 24 h in advance.
Unmistakable Burlotto Monvigliero nose, dominated by tapenade, but well integrated with fruit and tar. Nicely balanced on the palate, but I found it lacking in acidity, a bit static. Years ago I found the nose off-putting, but this time I found it special but nice. Other people could not get past the black olives which they found weird.

  • Decanted 1 hour
    Thick clear rim.
Dusty boot, under ripe cherry, dried rosemary, cedar box, and rose petal. Drinking well right now. Earthiness, mushroom, and damp forrest floor. I should have let it decant a bit more as it was not as expressive as the last time I had it. Still a very elegant wine that was enjoyed.

  • PnP. Lukt av klare røde bær, roser, vanilje, havregryn. Skarp synlig lukt helt bakerst ala sur eik. Passe moden, neste flaske bør tas innen 2025. 1 uke i flaske: overraskende mørk og rik. Ingen eik , tørka frukt, frisk og rustikk

  • Decanted 2 hours plus. It needed it IMO.
Very nice wine. Light ruby color very Pinot noir. Nose is very elegant and sophisticated. Rose petal, mushrooms, Forrest floor, sour cherry, cooked meat juices clay. A bit of heat. Good 20 second finish. Tannins are still relatively strong. Probably has another 10 years, but drinking well now IMO.

  • Lost my notes, but this was delicious. Will have to report better on the next bottle.

  • Fantastic, carafed upon opening, it took about an hour to soften on the palate. Initially, when opened the nose was intensely floral, like smelling a rose bush. Then, it went very Northern Rhone like with an intense meaty aroma (beef dripping), All the time quite savory, then the tar aroma appeared, with black pepper. Then all the aromas and flavours blended into a beautiful classic Barolo. Amazing wine.

  • Decanted ~6 hours and then back into the bottle. Gorgeous and uniquely Burlotto Monvigliero aromatics of olive and stem woven into dried sour cherry and florals. The palate was smooth and elegant throughout. Moderate fruit concentration and suave tannins. Really pretty. Drinking perfectly with a long decant. Should hold for a decade or two or three.

  • A private dinner at a friend's (Baarn, Netherlands): Mature but lively appearance; mature and rich nose, slightly dusty tannins, liquorous cherries, red meat, hint of chocolate, good depth; slightly balsamic palate, firm bitters, medium body, bright acidity; good resonance and length. Now mature and not as spectacular and exuberant as before, but a really elegant and beautiful wine.

  • Remarkably fresh, with a color that simply dazzles. Bright floral top notes, crisp red fruits, a cool, deep soil vibrancy. A joy for the senses; did not want the bottle to end. Thru 2026? highly recommended

  • Really sexy, delicious Barolo that smells and tastes of olives. Quite full and silky with flavors of black fruits and black olives. The tannins are so silky and round for Nebbiolo with good acidity underneath to keep it fresh. Just flows in layers over the tongue with a lovely spicy and floral complexity on the finish. A transparent wine that has a different flavor profile (Verduno) than the usual stuff. Delicious Barolo that can be drunk now but will continue to age well. 94+ At Babbo

  • This remains a very remarkable wine. Even straight from the (12ºC) cellar and straight from the bottle, it blows you away with its explosive aromas of spiced sweet strawberries and honey; the wall of tannins on the palate looks quite forbidding, but the transparent charm and effortless finesse of this wine leave it standing like the hapless England defenders against Maradona's rush in the World Championship in 1986; finishes long and precise. Since this wine was foot-trodden, it is more likely that the feet of the labourers are responsible for this dazzling success than Maradona's "Hand of God", but to call this celestial wine pedestrian, would be an insult. A wine of real beauty.

  • Lunch 5/2015: Wonderfully perfumed, olives alongside the floral aspects. Far less tannic than 5 years ago but also a way to go before it is really mature and still a little closed. Ripe but not flabby. I love this wine although at the same time it is a strange mix of traditional and atypical.

  • We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting.
Best possible qpr on this somewhat “under the radar” producer.
Really hopes it will stay there, as a little secret pearl, but that is probably not going to happen, unfortunately…
This is, imo, Burlotto’s top wine.
Made with whole bunches, feet stomped and aged in large bottis for 2 years before spending another year in bottles before release.
Nose is complex, with lovely wild roses, green herbs and spicy stems, licorice, cool red fruit, ripe cherries, minerals, tea and a touch of spicy leather.
Palate is graceful, Burgundish, silky and long with sweet ripe cherries, raspberries, some spicy leather and spicy stems.
    Very feminine and transparent.
A very, very fine Barolo. 93+

  • Light but lively, bright red colour, no signs of age yet; immediately attractive nose, a fresh but heady cocktail of sweet strawberries, flowers and farmyardy aromas; the palate is refined and silky, in a feminine and transparant way, with quite formidable tannins that give backbone and character but manage not to stick out, pure but light strawberry flavours; very good length. A wine of character and grace, with a real sense of place (Verduno!).

  • Medium-deep garnet red.
The nose screams of Burlotto's Monvigliero and I am not able to pin it down: very intense and aromatic, spicy, but a bit too aggressive for me (it reminds me of mature cheese?).
Palate: starts on cherries, then the spices kick in. Strong but fine-grained tannins.
Its very peculiar aromatics is not quite to my liking, but it is unique.
    **
Edit: last sips drunk on day 4, from the glass where the wine stayed for more than 24 hours. The nose is quieter and more enjoyable.
Still lively and fresh on the palate. Remarkable.
    It really deserves:

  • Incredibly seductive and beguiling, charming and full of finesse yet very intense and with wonderful tannic grip, perfumed and floral topnotes on a basis of earthy aromas with touches of the farmyard, crushed ripe fruits (raspberry, rosehip) develops some nuttiness, silky texture, fresh and well-balanced, excellent length. The most Burgundian of Barolos, a magnificent specimen, at peak but with time in hand.

  • On a glacial evolution pace, still vibrant and entirely primary. Perhaps even more juicy fruit showing in the core beneath tangerines and roses and spice. Give it 5-10 before checking back.

  • Drunk over lunch, no notes taken. Retasted in the evening and on the next day.
Light garnet red. Very intense, forward nose with cherries/blueberries, "china calissaia" and other aromatic herbs with some farmyard in the background. The palate was on the thin side but pleasant and refreshing. With time in the glass it gained weight. In the evening and on the second day rather strong tannins showed up. The palate showed best on the second day, with good weight, flavour intensity and good balance - a bit drying at the end. The nose also has reached a better balance and elegance on the second day, while on the first day I found it a bit too aggressive. All in all I find a lot of good elements in the glass but not yet well balanced - I find it difficult to rate now and will certainly wait several more years before opening another bottle.

  • Exclusively foot-trodden, whole-cluster fermentation, 60-day maceration on the skins. Almost impossibly aromatic, strawberries and roses, it's like perfume, with cool minerality and a farmyardy touch lurking below the surface; wonderfully fresh and clean, finely grained tannins, hint of lemon zest, excellent length. A supremely stylish, very Burgundian Barolo. Is entering its drinking window and will stay there for another ten years at least.

  • G.D. Burlotto Barolo (Del Posto Restaurant, NYC): Muted, highly structured. Fairly shut down at this point, but the potential is obvious. Someday, this wine may well be better than any of the preceding. 94-96 points.

  • Decanted back into the bottle and let to rest for 12 hours. Pale red. Dry rose, cherry pit, anise, cinnamon stick, walnut skin, tar and pencil eraser. Quite dusty, intensely floral and spicy with some beetroot and earth. Dried amarena cherry, more anise, cedar and cinnamon on the palate with cedarbox and sandalwood. Moderate acid, VERY soft and gentle tannin and quite a persistent and drying roasted coffee finish. Good concentration and weight and although this wine is unmistakably Barolo, it seems on the softer and more gentile side. Clean, tons of dusty potpourri personality, beautiful balance if a bit reticent at this point. Still quite enjoyable.

  • good, but I miss fruit at this time. The Barolo is a bit harsh, but joung. Time will tell. There is potantial in it. 88+

  • Fortunately not too tannic to drink, but not so rewarding either, featuring surprisingly lightish red fruit and that's about it. Past vintages warrant the benefit of the doubt that this is inexpressive rather than vacant, but I'm not sure whether this has all the material that, e.g., the '01 had.

  • Intensely floral with cinnamon and blood orange screaming at you. Spectacularly beautiful nose that clearly shows the whole-cluster of this wine. That makes it a bit atypical perhaps, but clearly still Barolo just in a very different presentation. Soft and elegant and incredibly silky palate. Tannins are very soft and ripe. Very sweet sappy red fruit presented with incredible detail and purity. Honestly, a pretty amazing bottle. Worth noting that this showed very herbal and a bit disjointed on opening, but was allowed to breathe in the bottle for 12 hrs before drinking.

  • 2004 Barolo (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): Lighter with earthy tones and ultimately, some frank brett. Light weight and soil comes through on the palate as well. Again, the fruit is not obvious, but the structure is a bit more covered with sap and flesh than the village Azelia. Some green on the finish. Unimpressive and I wouldn't dream of paying $75 for this.

  • SF WSET 2004 Barolo Blindtasting (Slaton's place, San Francisco, California): Medium dark red violet color; tangerine, floral, berry, licorice, herbal nose; nice dried cherry, dried berry, currant, sweet herb palate; medium-plus finish (group's #2 WOTT)

  • Soaring bouquet of violets, roses, raspberries; even directly from the cellar classic and irresistible at the same time, with firm tannins but juicy and rich, with enchanting, ethereal flavours of tangerine liqueur and spices; combines lightness of touch, depth and concentration in a silky texture. Already beautiful but it will last.

  • The material is all here for a quite fabulous wine, but it is going to take awhile to get there. You get some barolo typicity at the moment, but a lot of it is still hiding behind the fearsome tannins. Don't start on this for another 5 years minimum to get it really singing.

  • Natural Wines of Italy (Jug Shop, San Francisco, CA): Some wild cherry, and spice on the fragrant nose. Very nice depth without weight on this one. Spicy and herbal with fresh tomato and wood (not really oak) flavors. This was rustic with very soft tannins and really fairly drinkable for a young barolo. Very old-school and intriguing stuff.
