Tasted a bit restrained at first, decanted in a travel bottle. Really started to open at dinner about a hour later and seemed to continue to open throughout the meal. It showed cherries, other fruits some dried and slight bit of tar. The finish was long and smooth to the end. Out to dinner with a group of wine friends so very busy and a lot of wines to taste but this one stood out.

Garnet, almost rusty color. On opening, nose is leather, oak, and olive. Body is medium. Tannins are surprisingly strong. With food after one hour decant, leather notes more subtle. Mushroom notes are strong. Fruit is muted. Clearly high quality, but not extraordinary

Double blind; was in Rousillon or N. Spain. Served under less than ideal temperature conditions, this was at first too cool, then as the temp came in the zone, it showed a bit sappy, the fruits much more dark red than red. It struggled to show structure, elegance, and was instead just full-on drinkable, and perfect for a casual summer dinner. That said, I've little doubt this was anything other than a victim(?) of its circumstance - a hot Denver summer night. Having said all this, now I can lean on the owner of the bottle to open additional bottles in the name of proper research. NR
The 2004 Produttori Riservas: Asili wins by a nose (Magnum Society, Wellington, New Zealand): Served single blind, confused with the Montefico. I did not find the vegetal earthiness that I expect from a Produttori Ovello. My original pour was from a corked bottle but a later small sample from a clean bottle was very impressive (so it is reviewed accordingly). Ruby and some garnet colour. An attractive spicy red fruited and earthy bouquet. Rich, brambly fruit on palate. Plenty of rich, primary red fruit, red currant and raspberry. Brooding tannins. Well balanced. Excellent length. In its early drinking window. Impressive! My rating 5/7, group rating 3/7.

Listen, people, don't open this wine right now. it needs time. There are glimpses of beauty and red fruit and floral elements. There is an interesting dark anise, licorice element and it is very regal. It is just very tight and cloaked up right now. Wait. And the wait some more.

2004 Barbarescos, like this one, are presently drinking very well. Also, reflecting the vintage, they are often, as again here, drinking in a style I like very much. Classical, cooler, savoury and showing a little tobacco. Largely red fruited, with some of it dried or preserved red berries. Both fresh and dried herbs and plenty of Ovello signature earthiness. Slightly green and vegetal, but meant as a positive descriptor. Now on its drinking plateau.

Overall still rather tight and tannic, but the aromatics are beautiful, so maybe only a little more patience is required. Will wait another five years or so before opening another.

Decanted. Dense medium brick-garnet color. Tertiary/umami notes on the nose - savory broth and mushrooms, leather, soil, dried rose hips, balsamic and a little port-like berry fruit that grows more subtle in the glass. Vivid cherry and red plum fruit on the palate evenly matched with floral and earthy secondary integration. Lithe and elegant density in the palate, rounded broad tannins, finishing with lengthy elegant depth. Showing beautifully. Give it some air to integrate the savory aromatics. This bottle was more mature than I expected - especially aromatically - likely some bottle variation from the norm based on feedback from Wineberserkers.com.

2018 Visit to Produttori del Barbaresco with Aldo and David: An exquisite but very different, “cooler” nose than the 2005. Largely red berries and cherries, spices, citrus, tar and cut, fresh herbs on bouquet. On palate, a classical Barbaresco. “A lot of dry extract but slightly vegetal”, as Aldo noted. Well integrated tannins. Red cherries, red currants, earth and slightly salty minerals. Aldo suggested either drinking the 2004 now or holding for 4-5 years. Very good, for me, not far behind the 2005 in quality, for me.

Needs an hour in the decanter to open up, but then it puts on a great show with classic nebbiolo aromatics such as blonde tar, raspberry coulis, dried roses, leather and liquorice. Slightly drying at first, and the fruit seems to need a bit more stuffing, but in due time it all resolves into a lovely drinking experience. No lack of freshness, with a hint of spiciness and a salty mineral finish. Ready to go, with many years ahead.

Barolos and Barbarescos with some age (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose has a searching and savory quality with roasted herbs, spice tones, licorice, red cherries, strawberries, juniper berries, tobacco, violets, and tar. There is excellent depth with a real freshness to the tones.
Taste: Medium bodied with high tannins and high acidity. The tannins are youthful, but silky with the feel having a more feminine style along with red cherries, roasted herbs, licorice, spice notes, juniper berries, and tar.
Overall: This is drinking deceptively well. There is a real prettiness to the fruit, but it still has much further to go. The structure is still quite youthful that easily shows it can use another 3-5 years and easily last another 15+ beyond that.

Older Barolos at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): #7197/11973. Double-decanted about six hours before. Of the two 2004 Produttoris tonight, I thought that this was the slight winner. This came across as more elegant and floral, and farther along the spectrum towards the red-fruited side. The palate is already quite soft, with the velvety tannins well on their way to resolution. There's a hint of sweetness from the fruit, but there's fair acidity as well.

Nice nose. Dry cherry, dry plum, charred/grilled meat on the palate. Impessive acidity on day one softens a bit on day two, Considerable tannin remains. This had a changing complexity that I love. Would be nice to try again in a few years.

Checking in on the Produttori 2004 Riservas; 10/16/2016-11/7/2016: Medium plum-red in colour, a bit of ageing. Very forward on the nose, quite jammy, a bit port-like; lovely ripe plum fruit and a firm underpinning of licorice; quite Serralunga style; warm; a bit of Uhu; something malic-lemony there too. Mouthfilling and intense, with good acidity to give this real vivacity; quite furry tannins. Super now, a real crowd pleaser though rather burley; plenty left in the tank

Bred rød kjerne, tynn vandig kant. Funklende farge. På nesen er det røde bær mot godt modne jordbær men friske bringebær ligger rett bak. Tørre jordlige toner. Tørr pels og lær. Florale elementer absolutt. Disse også i en tørket utgave. Alkostikk trekker noe ned. Kjølig inngang i munn, varmere avslutning, et saftig midtparti. Saliverende i munn. Krydret og lekker. God balanse her. Tanninstrukturen er fin. Skulle dog ønske at den dro litt mer på. Med såpass heftig syre liker jeg at en vin fra dette området og denne årgangen utfordrer munnhulen en smule mer. God lengde. Fin vin med lite luft. Fin vin med mye luft. Drakk bra over to dager. Alkostikket og de tørrende elementene tilsier at jeg ikke kommer til å la denne bli veldig gammel i kjelleren. Tror jeg velger å drikke opp i løpet av 5-6 år.

Decanted 4hrs. A good showing, and while I would never attempt to pronounce any sweeping judgments in adolescent Barolo / Barbaresco, this was a little different than what I would have expected going in. Specifically, it was a bit more forward and lush than anticipated, though by no means was it flabby or without virtues. I bet I would have guessed this as an 07 if served blind. Best to hold as would be practical for any 2004 right now.

Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2015 Edition; 10/9/2015-10/11/2015 (Piedmont, Italy): From Magnum. No Decanting. To be honest for a 2004 we expected a bit more fruit weight and depth by now. This was a bit linear and restrained, nice nose but on the palate it was not very giving and sort of felt closed. Not a bad wine but wanted/expected more. A good 89

Decanted for four hours. Wonderful stuff with a great nose of flowers, earth and fruit. Full flavors of dark red cherries. Still plenty of tannin, but not at all out of balance. Drinking just about perfect right now.
Drank with friends on a deck overlooking SF Bay which clouded our judgement I'm sure.

Best one from my case so far, this only needed 1 hour of decant before it opened up. Beautifull evolved nose of dried fruits, pomegranate, dried flowers, cinnamon stick and herbs, graphite and earth. Nicely balanced on the palate with great minerality and modest integrated tannins, 93+ pts. wait another 3-5 years if you can.

Popped and aired for 4 hours. Amazing nose of dried cranberry, earth, mushroom and tar. Intoxicating. Complex (but young) flavors of cranberry and other dried red fruits with secondary mushroom and truffle. This is very much balanced but needs 5 or more years. We all loved this wine

Dark ruby color and very distinct tar and rose aroma. Tight bright red fruit taste with very long length and extremely pleasant finish with notable tannins which are not bitter by any means. The mushroom/truffle secondary flavors have not developed yet. Overall extremely impressive for a very young Barbaresco.

Loved it Huge minerals on the palate, nice fresh acidity, notes of ripe red fruit, vitamin pill, iron, herbs, raspberries, bell peppar, dry integrated tannins long savoury finish. 5 more years and this will rock even more. . .

Not as good as i remembered it to be nearly a year ago, might have closed down abit cus it wasn´t givin away that much tonight. decanted 1,5 hours before drinking and could perhaps have used some more time. The nose had notes of pomegranate, apple peel, rosepetal, wet forest floor, clove and cranberry in the backend. The palate had notes of herbs, cranberry, mocca, clove and pomegranate. Big firm drying tannins.
Did not improve on day 2 the nose became more medicinal with cough syrup and blackcurrant, the palate didn´t really hold up that well. Hope this was kind of an off bottle and that the rest of my bottles show more like the first time I had this.

Straight from the bottle it was quite closed, but after 2-3 hrs in the decanter the wine hade woken up. The nose concentrated mainly on floral and fruity themes, typically fresh cherries, strawberries, roses etc, but with an addition of liqourice that increased with time. The intensity and complexity of the nose increased throughout the meal. Mouth was medium full with excellent concentration, tastes that followed the nose, excellent acids and slightly dusting tannins. Nice, long finish. Drunk with a meal of black grouse. The taste elements of a good Nebbiolo again proved to be an excellent match for this complex meat that is so rich in taste, and the medium tannic structure was just right for the meat - the wine floated atop the food and matched it, in spite of being not too powerful.

Tried a little immediately after opening the bottle. Beautiful floral nose (rose) with dark fruit. Lovely palate, but tight grip on the finish. Poured the remaining in the decanter and allowed to sit for 7+ hours. Shared with friends at a blind tasting. The wine really opened up. The nose was richer....deeper fruits, earth and rose. The palate was dark fruit (blackberries/dark cherry) with some sweet herb flavors (?). The finish showed some chocolate with spice and cherries. Only 1 person out of 18 guessed right for the blind tasting. Wonderful wine indeed!

Opened and decanted for 6+ hours. Tried a little before decanting. It's surprisingly approachable already, despite being young. After decanting, it was amazing. Beautiful nose of fruit and possibly mocha. The palate balanced blackcurrant and cherry with some slight floral notes and spice. Finish of bright fruit.

popped and decanted, no sediment drunk over 5 hours
color: Bright clear red with orange rim.
nose:amazing complex concentrated nose of dirt and truffles, plum, mocca, pomegranate and some florel notes, a little green notes with a balsamico thing in the backend.
palate: really well balanced and great structured wine with notes of blackcurrant and raspberrys, dark chocolate, soy sauce and licorice and a minty eucalyptus thing in the backend, big dry tannins and a finish that goes on for 40+ sec.
this will age well, hold for 5-10 years and this will be 95-96 pts. . .

2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva (and a few others) (Burnside Zupan's (Portland, OR)): Some funk, but overall light, showing some candied red fruits on the nose. Bright, pretty twizzlers fruit in the mouth, showing nice acid and some soil. Nice integration of soil, fruit, and nice body and tannins... certainly delicious red fruits. Perhaps I should have picked some of this up afterall.

Of coarse this is beyond way to young, but the Produttori’s pricing ($44) allow me to purchase enough bottles to allow multiple check ins and reference point tastings before it hits maturity. As I’m a class A offender for over decanting young Nebbiolo, this time I simply gave it a 30 minute bath in the decanter, just to wake it up and give it a little exercise. The color is what first grabbed my attention, still translucent red as most Produttoris are, but of a much darker hue. Aromatically, (and this really wasn’t a huge surprise) not a lot to be found last night, some occasional nuances of rosy, floral goodness, maybe a whiff of exotic cherry spice. The palate however was loaded. I’ll make no attempt at describing any specifics, as this was more akin to drinking a Nebbiolo embryo than a wine, but even a novice connoisseur would be able to discern the wealth of raw material here, just waiting for father time to put it all together in both synchronicity and harmony. Tannin and acid are nouns I expected to dominate this note, and they are there for sure, but they have been confined to the back seat, as the aforementioned nebbilo pulp takes the wheel. Where ever this gem does end up, it’s a destination I want to see.

Vintages Tasting with Aldo Vacca (Concord, MA): The Ovello was rich and delicious, the essence of what has been so good about early tastings of the '04 Piedmonts. Cherry fruit with menthol, pine, spices and licorice - ripe tannins and long finish; it is all there. This was remarkably ripe and smooth, but full of stuffing.

Seems to be in really good drinking window right now. Tasted better than a year or two ago. Excellent QPR (in case you can still find it).

Smoke, tar, cinnamon and thyme over a dark and deep morello cherry fruit mid palate. Silky texture, well balanced. 2 hrs in the decanter softens the tannines and opens the drinking window!

To be honest for a 2004 we expected a bit more fruit weight and depth by now. This was a bit linear and restrained, nice nose but on the palate it was not very giving and sort of felt closed. Not a bad wine but wanted/expected more. A good 89

Finish of bright fruit.

popped and decanted, no sediment drunk over 5 hours
color: Bright clear red with orange rim.
nose:amazing complex concentrated nose of dirt and truffles, plum, mocca, pomegranate and some florel notes, a little green notes with a balsamico thing in the backend.
palate: really well balanced and great structured wine with notes of blackcurrant and raspberrys, dark chocolate, soy sauce and licorice and a minty eucalyptus thing in the backend, big dry tannins and a finish that goes on for 40+ sec.
this will age well, hold for 5-10 years and this will be 95-96 pts. . .
