Champagne and Pinot Noir WIMPS #168 31st August 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick): A melange of sweet red fruits and tarter lingonberries on the nose. Later a little Bakewell sweetness too. The palate is harder to work out; doesn't quite get going. I'm not sure if a sub-par bottle or just in need of a proper multi-hour decant but not quite what it should be on the day.

The End of the Golden Weather: a pre-COVID-19 Visit to Central Otago in Autumn 2020: I served the two Fourriers as a pair double blind. Typical warmer 2007, more Gevrey-specific and more “Fourrier-like”. A complex, funky, musky and earthy bouquet with lifted spices and florals. I preferred the complexity while some of the winemakers worried about "grubbiness". Some also saw the wine as more “New World” rather than as classic Burgundy. Red cherries and raspberries with some preserved red and black fruit, tobacco, soil, spices and dry brush. Nicely evolved and rounded. Detailed and lovely. Again, at its best, I'd expect, over the next few years.

Very Fourrier on the nose, though darker than typical (not unexpected of the Combe au Moine), but the palate is extremely young despite hours in the decanter. The tannins are still prominent and the finish still feels almost partially integrated due to the tannins and the acidity not being entirely in harmony. It's a tasty wine, but drinking extremely young right now. To the back of the cellar this goes.

PnP. ABV 13.5%. Flowers and dark soils on the nose, fairly expressive. A very reliable and consistent wine since the 1st bottle few years ago. Bright acidity and a tad lean, fine tannins, oaks were fully integrated. Finished with slight bitter notes. No trace of alcohol. Spices lingering at finish, very nice. With air, this continued to put on weight and rounder mouthfeel. Just like most of ‘07 Red Burgs, wide-open and delicious.

Extensive Social Distancing Drink #4. The last bottle was like 2 years ago, time to open this reliable wine again. Flowers, oaks, and spices on the nose. Seems more lean and less showy vs previous bottle, but still drinking well. Some fine tannins still hanging around but definitely ready. Good balance with no hint of alcohol. Continued to put on weight in the glass. Strong old barrels and spices finish, very nice.

R/Y/I/C (Home): Initially quite full and glossy with quite a dark red fruited profile. Decanted 5hrs but kept at cellar temp. Lightens slightly, still a hint of the trademark spritz. Lovely aroma, cherry, damp earth and a touch of strawberry. Drinking very well now. ****

Really nice. Good acidity and freshness. An elegant Gevrey with tannins and a certain wildness. Doesn’t show the heat of 2007. Perhaps just lacking a but of detail and definition.

Nose has nice vibrancy though red cherry and raspberry fruit, Some greenness, not unpleasant. Began giving more Gevrey rusticity and quite a bit of spice towards the end. Palate is straightforward, tasty, balanced, approachable, not impressively concentrated or long.

It’s wide open and delicious again, such a reliable wine. Not a big wine or a lot of complexity but so charming. A touch stemmy and spicy on the mid-palate. Not a trace of alcohol, so graceful. Allocation during EP is getting tougher and tougher for this bottling but a must get every vintage, my allocation for ‘16 got cut from 6-pack to 2b, WTF. Effectively this has replaced Rousseau Ruchottes as a go-to wine in the rotation, in baseball, this is batting 2nd in the line-up. Keep a glass for the 2nd day, showing better, added complexity and weight, soft and round tannins, up the score. Maybe a 92.73418 pointer!

Wonderful showing, fantastic wine. A transparent and clear view into Gevrey, compelling. The fruit is dark and rich, and entirely shot through with earth and stone. The structure and tannins make the wine feel hard, and i don't mean that in a negative way at all, just a description of the character of the wine, as opposed to Chambolle feeling soft sometimes. The aromas and flavors are bright and very pungent, and grew in pungency over the course of an hour. This is a beautiful wine, the kind of wine that makes you want to open more Burgundy.
Hauntingly beautiful on the nose; red but with darkness to the fruit, and a little Autumn forest undergrowth; rich, a little shine on the palate, with long finish and slight acidic note. Fantastic drinking.
This is now very much Gevrey rather than Fourrier, the trademark gloss has dissipated and the terroir is coming through. A dark, savoury quality to the red fruit, some meat and wet earth too. Nicely long. Silky texture and lots of interest. ****

Ruby. Char, a bit of game, black cherry, and building mint-stupidly put, this just smells like real Burgundy. Light to medium weight with superb, sappy feel and just a small bite of stemminess toward the end. Soil inflected from beginning to end with the strong acidity of the vintage. I have loved all 3 bottles of this that I've had over the past couple of years, so much so that I couldn't heed my own advice to be patient and give a few more years. This really represents the best of 2007 Burgundy in terms of transparency and fine acidity, but it is deeper and more succulent than the vast majority of these wines.

Elected to decant for 2 hours (benefitted). Berries, game and pepper on the nose along with a hint of vanilla oak. Palate features rather bold fruit weight (compared to the Copain Kiser En Bas served alongside) but with more than sufficient tannic backbone to compensate. This was more fruit and tannin than I expected from a 2007. Acidity is there and it paired equally well with the seared scallops. Long and more development ahead.

Despite having lots of wines at home, this is one of those days that I keep wondering what the heck to open tonight. So pull out the old reliable since the last bottle was almost a year back. Ruby. Like the last bottle, black cherry, anise, smoke, and soil. Medium weight, actually fuller than last time and more body than I would expect from a Gevrey of this vintage. Sour cherry, fine acidity, a long tail of soil, and gentle remaining tannin. An altogether lovely drink which should stay at this high level for another 3 or 4 years, conservatively speaking.
This only grew, sweetened, and expanded the second night after being recorked. Bravo, Fourrier, for a generous, deep 2007.

Trying out two of my new toys, Coravin and Zalto Burgundy glass. Great nose, floral and intense. Sweet and smooth on the attack, still some unresolved tannins, spicy and slightly bitter at mid palate. Decent length and complexity. Good balance and pretty. Already some secondary developments. Approachable now but should be better in 3 to 5 years. Lovely wine, don't think I ever have a bad bottle of Fourrier Aux Moines, what a gem! Zalto glass certainly enhance the aromas but seems so fragile. 5/12 bottle.

Light red with faded edge. A lot of char and smoke to begin with, but this gave way to red berry fruit and rising wintergreen. Light weight, still lingering sweetness of fruit, excellent acidity, and a subtle finish that is packed with wet earth. A beauty and no more than a few years away from its apogee.

Funky nose, which promises but under-delivers on the palate. Compared to the Dujac it was a bit coarse and unrefined on the mid, and lacking a bit on the back. The truffle-infused nose was thrilling, but we think these wines are over-rated and flatter somewhat to deceive.

This bottle does not show well on the first day, slightly high acidity and subdue on the nose. But transform after one night in the wine fridge. Floral and clean on the nose. Fairly smooth on the attack, still some tannins around, no hint of alcohol, very good balance overall. Not an overly complex wine but pretty as usual. 4/12 bottle.

Quite earthy and promising aromatically. A tad less inspiring on the palate. Still showing lots 'o' the 2007 vintage character in that regard. Pleasingly red-fruited and fairly tart, which is fine, but was hoping for some scale-back of those characteristics at this point, with a movement towards complexity. Try again in two years to see if that's happened by that point......

Slightly disappointed for a fourrier. The nose was not particularly floral by his standard. Palate was elegant with pure fruit. There might be some bottle variation on this one.

Flowers, soils, and spices soaring from the glass, the nose is actually better than '02. What's separating '02 from '07 is on the palate, this is leaner and and not as round or as complex. But is still a delicious wine! I may have found a wine to replace my beloved but depleting Rousseau Ruchottes Chambertin. I like Ruchottes Chambertin more than anything else on Rousseau's lineup, good chance I prefer Aux Moines more than anything else on Fourrier's. (A-)

Slightly brighter and a touch more primary than the Goulots a couple of days ago. Bright, tangy cherry fruit. Rounder and more vibrant. Lacks the slight secondarily development, but also the mineral line. Sweet-fruited, bright, and quite long and persistent. Equally as good as the Goulots, just a slightly different expression. A little more generous and slightly easier as opposed to the more mineral, meaty relative sinuosity of the Goulots. It will be fun comparing relative development over the coming years. ****

Thai at Dural: Dense nose with licorice, earth and cloves. The fruit on the palate feels less dense but it is still quite bold and forward. Strong tannins do keep the fruit in check and a feeling that it has good potential. Score is for now with upside definitely possible.

Pale/medium garnet core, pale mahogany rim. Nose shows some development with pure strawberry fruit, florals, soil, hint of herb. Aromatic. Medium bodied, light, quite ethereal, pure red fruits, touch of game, vibrant acidity, elegant if still a touch of firmness on the very good length, sweet/gamey/spicy finish. Exquisite.

Great showing for this bottle. Good nose from get go, floral and clean. Still unresolved tannins, no hint of alcohol at finish. Touch of oaks at finish, not yet fully integrated. This may not have the structure and complexity of '07 Cathiard Murgers but have very good balance. Delicious today. (A-)

First bottle of a case bought last year. Interesting nose, floral, pungent with also hints of alcohol on the nose, not the cleanness. Vibrant acidity level. Red fruits, game, and earth, this has a touch of rustic side to it that I don't experience with younger Fourrier wines. Slightly dry and firm mid-palate with oily texture, my guess is that this wine is not ready for prime time yet even though it's certainly approachable now. Prefer '11 version. (B)

A long lunch at Helen's place (Martinborough, NZ): Bright, clear red colour. A lovely nose of red and black cherries, very pure with mineral and chalk notes. On palate, a lovely, beautifully balanced wine, fresh and lively but rich, with good fruit weight. Crystalline fruit, more in the darker berry spectrum. Sparkling, very attractive acidity. A seamless profile with excellent structure and finesse. Very good length, finishing on those mineral and chalk elements. This wine has been open for business for at least a year or two now. Excellent.

Just returned from a week in France divided between Paris and Beaune so we have burgundy running in our bloodstream. This brought us back to the Magic that a week in Beaune and the two Cotes started. Dont have that much burgundy in the cellar but that will change. This wine is what my wife and I love from Pinot. Clarity and focus, elegant, understated.

Wines with Larry, Huw and Paul in Martinborough: A lighter ruby colour. On the nose, aromas of red berry fruit, particularly red cherries, spice and a little earth. The bouquet showed a little evolution, consistent with a 2007 red Burgundy. After a little while, Larry pointed out a slight cork taint to the wine which, in hindsight, you realised had dulled down the bouquet a little. On palate most tasters had this as a New World wine. It exhibited lighter fruit weight than the wines around it but good bright acidity. The fruit weight seemed to be at 1er Cru level and it was ultimately no surprise that the wine was in fact a 2007 Burgundy. The tannins seemed to be good quality ones but showed a little hardness on the back. I wrote down that the wine was 'a little compressed' on palate with the fruit somewhat 'dulled down', consistent with the presence of TCA. I have previously had superb bottles of this wine but this was not such an example due to the TCA. Sadly, I have heard of several flawed bottles of this wine. Drink in the medium term.

This young Fourrier is absolutely stunning and well on its way to greatness. Pop and poured the wine is limpid and bright, offering pretty cherry and dried leaf perceptions. The first sip exudes bright sour mashed red cherries and a lovely navel orange perception that sometimes happens in Burgundy. (A la 1988 RSV from DRC) Yes, there is a Vosne-ishness to this wine. Later, there is some dark soil/earth mineral and a little youngness starts to show. I would definitely hold as this is little young now... But it is a sure thing in the future (in my book, anyway).
Decanted 3 hours and rebottled. Some red fruit and earth notes on a somewhat muted nose. Dark cherry fruit with notes of earth, forest floor and stems. Firm tannins on the finish. This wine was not giving up much and still seems a little primary. Have to say that I was a little disappointed with this. May well improve with more bottle age but at over $100 I am not inclined to find out.

Fourrier dinner with Jean-Marie (Pétrus, Knightsbridge, London): Not giving much on the nose, and although one can sense red fruits and earth on the palate, it's nowhere near as expressive as the Fourrier villages 07s which I've had so often. Hard to get a take on this.

On night one this was slightly spritzy and marred by serious reduction. A night in the fridge helped immensely. Mostly red fruited, notes of spice, flowers, and earth, medium bodied with lots of acid, smooth and silky until fine but drying tannins show up. This is quite structured for not being particularly dense. Needs time + air.

2012 - A brand new start with the gang: Alcohol :: 13% Popped and poured. Very tight on both nose and palate with some reduction note that kinda masked the intense underlying aromas of red cherries, floral, earth, wildness and mineral. Sour cherry on the palate, very shy but you can sense there are a lot more going on underneath, just tightly knit now and need time to show.
Day 2: The reduction has finally settled down and showing lovely red floral and cherries on the nose with chalk, mineral and wild gaminess. The palate is equally lovely with bright red fruits and lots of mid palate sap that formed a very good full filling mouth filling with medium level of depth and complexity. The purity, focus and precision here is absolutely lovely. The medium level of very fine tannin kick in at the back warrant this for the mid term development in the bottle. Juicy, detail long finish with mineral, autumn leave aftertaste. Well made. 90-91+

Quite approachable, with enchanting aromatics and a beautifully pure core of red cherry fruit. Barely middle-weight on the palate. Showing pronounced spice, earth, pine, and forest floor flavors. A touch herbacious in the middle, but finishes strong. Could maybe use just a touch more flesh and concentration, but it's still early in the game for this wine. Hold for a few more years.

Fine Gevrey. The nose has plenty of perfume with spicy vibrant red fruit. Wonderful acidity and a lot of co2 initially with a bit of barnyard coming through on the palate. This barnyard character grows with air and quite a bit of manure develops, which one normally finds in a northern Rhone syrah.

Funky nose, which promises but under-delivers on the palate. Compared to the Dujac it was a bit coarse and unrefined on the mid, and lacking a bit on the back. The truffle-infused nose was thrilling, but we think these wines are over-rated and flatter somewhat to deceive.

Drank this a little while back. Similar perceptions as the first bottle. 2007 Fourrier are so amazingly good!

Our style of burg. Focused, pure fruit, wondeful nose, mineral, lengthy. Love it

Deep set red and blue fruits. Nice aromatics here, also showing some development. The palate is medium bodied and so nicely integrated. There's a gaminess, with an earthy quality. A touch mousey?

2 for 2. This bottle opened at home and upon further reflection, I think it is brett. Just that finishing bitterness that grows and overwhelms the palate. But makes sense if this many notes report a flaw.

Pretty candied red cherry fruit dominates the aromatics with spice and earth on the palate and finish. Really pure. Serious and deceptively structured behind the pretty fruit. Balanced and elegant. Drinking well now but needs time to develop. 93+

Popped and poured.
