Interesting. I recently purchased this and it had obviously been kept very well. Almost perfect fill level. Upon opening, it really seemed very muted and just quite boring. Decanted and it improved after two hours and I gave it a total of 6 hours. Really very lovely. Seemed more like 14 years old than 24. This particular bottle could have gone on for another ten years.

Such a reliable second wine, it is always a delight to drink and has the structure to last. This was no exception and as with the Las Cases from 1998, it is surprising in its quality in a vintage that belonged to Graves and the right bank.

Classic bordeaux showing very little signs of aging after 22 years. This could easily age another 10+ years as we drank it after 3 more days of aging and just starting to open up with the initially slightly bitter tannins softening and becoming almost sweet. Shows the good wine making befitting of this estate's 2nd vin.

The Grand Tour - day twelve (Bordeaux): Decanted. Meaty, black plums, leather and earth, floral top notes and slight crushed oyster shell. In the mouth the wine is quaffable, soft and easy, juicy and fleshy and yielding. Tannins are near resolved and only offer a whisper of talc textured burr on the mid palate. As well as the black hued fruit there is a little leather, liquorice and spice as well as a touch of alcoholic warmth on the finish. Hmm. Today I'm finding this a little dull

Medium garnet. Very subdued nose on opening. Half saved in 375 bottle -- one week later was a very different wine with dark fruit and earth in abundance, gaining in weight and interest as well. Seems to be another '98 that could use more time. Otherwise, lengthy decant seems to be in order.

Drinking well with room for further development. Not a big wine, but elegant and balanced. Moderate length/depth, still some fruits, tannins are well integrated but present. Typical mineral character of St Julien. Drank well 24 hours later too. Drink now or hold up to 5-10 years.

Some Grilling with the Toronto Cru (Toronto, ON): This pours fairly dark with little bricking. The nose is clearly ripe and fruit forward of dark cherry, plum, herbs, a touch if green bean and hints of smoked meat. The palate reveals dark red plummy and dark cherry fruit. Moderate tannin/acid. Well made and correct if lacking somewhat in excitement.

Berry Bros. & Rudd Bordeaux Tasting Evening (Amoy Street): Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs. 10+ Year Old Frenchies (Bistro Dre, Chicago, IL): Medium nose is not intense but delivers an array of complex flavors - red fruit, earth, green pepper, herbs and mineral. Palate delivers with terrific power and precision. Delicious medium rich fruit with herbs, tobacco and mineral. Great acid driven lift and kick in the finish. Terrific showing and seems to be in a prime window.

Double decanted and left for an hour and a half, this was full and open on the nose; cassis, tabbaco and a hint of pine, notes of earthiness (some truffle maybe). Good mouthfeel full, rounded and good length, more typical st julien notes of black current matched with good acidity and nicely rounded tannins. Very enjoyable with a herb crusted rack of lamb.

Deep ruby in colour with a touch of brown hue! Rich nose of black currants, tobacco leaves and an hour later, a touch of minty herb! Solid on the palate with a deep core of black fruits! Very sweet! Tannins is shredded but this is still a sizeable wine! I think it is at it's peak now but it may keep for few more years! Say five to seven. Rock solid performance, just a bit four square in my view, lacking a bit of excitement and complexity! But still, well made! Classy! To make the wine more interesting, why not pair it with food? Game or how about a bit of roast lamb?

Opening the bottle and taking the first sniff was very reassuring - cedar wood, pencils and blackcurrants. The wine then continued to deliver in a favourite St Julien style. Not overly complex or long but demanded attention and very enjoyable. Ready to drink. WoFW 15/20

Wonderful fruit-filled nose, redolent of raspberries but backed up with the distinguished whiff of wood and leather that would have Mr.Lauren panting with excitement. I was consequently really looking forward to this. However the fruit had largely disappeared from the palate, leaving a very masculine ensemble of elements that, whilst impressive enough in a classic style, failed to stir the senses. My last bottle of six I purchased a couple of years ago. The first of these was undoubtedly my favourite - I remember heartily congratulating myself on such a sage acquisition - so I can only assume that this is a wine on the wane. Drink up, there is still plenty to enjoy, if not get excited about.

Aromas of cedar, leather and some red cherry fruit with earth. Resolved tannins with medium acidity and decent concentration. Nice. I would be inclined to say that this won't improve with time, but should be able to hold on for a few years.

On opening this had a slight green streak that receded with time. Meaty, coffee, earth, with dark fruit, but a little reserved. Tannins are still pretty moderate, I don't think this will improve much with time.

this has really evolved nicely since the last time I drank it. I am surprised to say that it seems to still have some nice life in it. It's neither opulent nor ebullient but a lovely fragrant claret.

Started off a little rocky, closed, harsh, a tad metallic, but the ship was righted within a half hour of exposure. This is Michael Broadbent "claret" personified, a totally appropriate 12.5% alcohol, suitable for elevenses, whatever the hell that is. Nose an appealing mix of currant, tobacco, cedar, and graphite. Not hulking, explosive, extracted, monumental, hedonistic, or densely satisfying, just an honest glass of wine with a lot of breed, balance and interest.

Decanted and drank 1 hour later. This wine is drinking wonderfully. It opens with a wonderful berry nose with tobacco and earth, and on the palate is fruit forward in measured ammounts with cuurant, saddle, tobacco and earth flavors - lots of terroir - and very soft supple tannins. Very long finish. My last bottle. Wish i had more. Drink now, but decant.

This wine requires decanting for at least 2 hours. It drank better on day two than day one. When first poured, it had a slightly tart finish, little fruit and no tannins. After a few hours the tartness disappeared and the fruit began to become prevalent, dark fruit, cherry and plum, some currant. Tannins were very soft and supple. Very lovely well mannered and deeply delicious in the true old world style.

Although this is starting to mature, do yourself a favor and decant. Took 2+ hours to open up, revealing nice currant and plum notes in a slightly rustic style. Still red-purple to the rim.

Quite nice. It probably could have used some more time to open up but I didn't have time to decant since we were having Chinese take-out before going to a New Years party later. It complemented the food well, especially the spicy Asian beef with a dark brown sauce. Definitely an earthy wine. There was quite a bit of sediment to watch out for towards the end of the bottle. This wine is the second label for Leoville Las Cases so at this price point it's a steal.

I said last time (09/09/12) I would wait 6 months before trying the 1998 Clos du Marquis again, but I was not true to my word. Went to a friend's house and bought a bottle of the Clos du Marquis which we ended up opening as the third bottle of the evening, the other two being faily non-descript. Difference in class showed immediately. The Clos du Marquis is beautifully constructed, with the must / earth taste becoming more delicate each time I try this wine (third in the last 12 months). The main course was pork and the wine complemented well, round and full enough to cut through the fatty flavours of the pork, but not too powerful to overwhelm. I reckon the 1998 is now at its peak and I plan to polish off the rest of my case over the next 6 months or so, starting with the next couple of bottles tomorrow! Highly recommended.

Second attempt at the Clos du Marquis 1998, the first being December 2008 at which point the wine was quite closed, with tight tannins and a musty / earthy taste. The wine has developed in the bottle well over the past nine months. There is still some must on the nose but the earth flavours round out much more quickly. Opened 1.5 hours before first tasting but needed the additional time in the glass to develop fully. Drank with a BBQ of burgers and sausages, which the wine complemented well. This wine is improving and I will hold off for another six months or so before trying again.

Ruby red color w/o bricking. Fantastic mocha, flint, and cedar nose that fills the air around the glass. Typical dense red fruit palate of St. Julian, with cassis more prominent, and fine plush tannins on the back end and hint of leather coming in. Body if slightly light if delicate rather than thin. Medium to long finish with ripe red fruits, mocha, flint, and touch of granite. Perfect, refined, and elegant claret I think at it's apogee. Still, doesn't have the complexity or length of it's more famous cousins.

Pretty decent St Julien that offers up classic notes of cedar, cigar boxes, spices but with a slightly green streak. Good tannins at first, but over time the wine loses a little bit of focus. No great depth, but reasonable enough. Overall good, but drink up.

Decanted for about 2 hours before drinking with five hour leg of lamb with spices. Colour still very dark with very little browning, but surprisingly well developed and rather light tannins. Good fruit, claretty nose, and matched the food well. Svelte but not as stunning as other vinatges of this I have had. Despite the soft tannins think it needs more time. Frist bottle of a case.

Dinner with friends: steak. Opened a 1998 Clos du Marquis and 1998 Petit Cheval at the same time. Nose on the Clos du Marquis was closed and a little musty. A bit of mould on the top of the cork but this did not go through the cork at all. Nose did not open upon decanting, 2.5-3.0 hours before dinner. Colour was dark red: no browning at the edge. Wine opened slightly during the course of the evening but strong tannins and slight must remained throughout. Taste was heavy, strong dark fruit flavours. First bottle from the case and I will be waiting 6 months until I try another one as the Petit Cheval 1998 is drinking much better.

With lamb kebabs, and a green salad with mango. Fully mature, some cedar and earth, black fruit a bit on the thin side. Better nose than on palate, finish is a bit short. Some 1998 Medocs have made me rethink my aversion to the vintage on that bank, but this isn't a particularly strong effort. I do enjoy this, but it's ok rather than special, and if I cellar something from 7-8 years I'm hoping for special. B/B-

I served this in a tasting with the 96, 98 and 2000 of the same wine. I also served the 1998 Leoville Las Cases. I found this to be very enjoyable and remarkably similar to Leoville. I don't think this has the same aging potential or the same complex mid-palate, but for 1/3 the price, you can't beat it.

initial nose had touch of ammonia, which dissipated over time. black fruit, saddle leather emerged later, although with a definite vegetal note. clearly a bordeaux with some age, very much tasting of "dirt". perhaps a bit thin overall on the palate, but a very enjoyable wine.

decanted for 3 hours. nose faded a bit after the initial burst of blackberries, meat and fresh tomatoes! Nice med. weight in the mouth with some vegetal notes along with berries, some leather. Not a whole lot going on here but there is enough structure to carry it for a long while. In general, the wine lacked depth but was a pleasant drink.

This is pretty yummy. Nice cigar-box nose along with notes of black fruit. The palate is a bit lean, lots of nice acidity, black cherry, some stalkiness, a hint of brett, mineral, well proportioned and quite enjoyable with lamb stew. Enjoyable beyond the points, a solid second wine with a nice, classic flavor profile.
