Meet the winemaker - MDDG with Samuel Guibert (WSET Bermondsey): Cabernet Sauvignon vines now 50 years old. Cabernet Sauvignon is separately fermented (for up to 4 weeks) to all of the other red varieties (which are co-fermented for ~2 weeks whilst the cabernet sauvignon is being picked). Pumped over twice per day in oxygen-rich environment for 5-days, before flushing the oxygen out with CO2. Pumping over minimised to a maximum of once per day towards the end of fermentation. Blended post-fermentation, and pressed after blending.
Tannins still present. Full on garrigue; really strong seam of acidity, and pretty lean. Oldschool! All the leathery, tertiary goodness one would expect. Legendary vintage by all accounts but for me I'm after just a little bit more generosity. Got better in the glass so this score might be a bit mean.

Fantastic Cabernet nose. Palate underwhelms relative to the nose. Still has some fruit mixed in with the expected tertiary notes. Lovely with food but doesn’t have much depth. Nonetheless a great QPR

Nose to rival a good Bordeaux. Palates lacks the complexity / length. Would likely blind as a ~5th growth. Solid QPR. Not likely to improve from here, but keeping my last one to experiment

I’ve had this in my temperature-controlled cave since I bought it en primeur from the domaine. I opened it not expecting too much, and I didn’t carafe it or even leave the bottle open very long before I sampled it. Colour is lovely a deep ruby, no trace of « tuile ». The nose is difficult to describe, expressive, not really fruity, some forest herbs in there, a bit spicy. Tasting, the wine is superb, Beltane and Dessauve give the drinking window up to 2020, but this bottle, though perfect to drink today will last a few years yet. Round, silky, more dark red fruits in the taste than the nose. Long and quite full-bodied. Way exceeds my expectations. A lovely bottle. A nice surprise!

Medium to deep garnet. Intense, aged, unusual nose.truffles, cigar, kirsch, spices, hint of black berry liqueur. Soft texture, mellow, balanced acidity, medium almost light body. peppery, chocolate, red rather than black fruit, savoury and mineral. Little bit hollow in the mid palate. Decent spicy length. The nose is better than the taste. Overall good but not great bottle.

Still full, juicy red in colour despite its advancing years. Warm spice and herbs on nose and palate with an uplifting minty finish. A real treat - drink up soon and treasure!

Opened 20 Minutes in advance, no decant. Lived up to its reputation. Beautifully integrated, still with plenty of fruit. Drunk over 2 hours it showed no signs of fading.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (64,5%), Merlot (8,8%), Syrah (8%), Cabernet Franc (6,6%), Malbec (5,6%), Pinot Noir (2,5%), Tannat (1,4%) and the remaining 2,6% rounded out by a blend of Areni (from Armenia), Amigne (Switzerland), Barbera (Italy), Bastardo aka. Trousseau, Chkhaveri (Georgia), Dolcetto (Italy), Nebbiolo (Italy) and Saperavi (Georgia). Fermented and macerated for 20 days in stainless steel tanks, aged for 12-15 months in oak barrels ranging from new to 7 years old. 13% alcohol, 5,1 g/l acidity and pH 3,71. Total production 109,000 bottles and 1,850 magnums. Decanted for 2,5 hours, tasted in a Mas de Daumas Gassac 2017-1989 vertical from a magnum bottle.
Rather translucent appearance for a Mas de Daumas Gassac with a somewhat evolved dark garnet color. Attractive, savory nose with aromas that aren't young anymore, but not particularly tertiary either: roasted meat, some wizened dark forest fruits, a little bit of smoke, light bretty notes of barnyard, a rusty hint of blood and a perfumed touch of dried flowers. The wine is dry and light-to-medium-bodied on the palate with juicy and surprisingly youthful flavors of stony minerality, meaty umami, some wizened red cherries, a little bit of ripe, cassis-driven dark fruit, light bretty notes of leather and farmhouse funk, a ferrous hint of blood and an earthy touch of garrigue. The moderately high acidity lends great focus to the wine and the mouthfeel is wonderfully suave and silky despite the still quite grippy medium-plus tannins. The finish is dry, juicy and moderately tannic with a healthy grip and quite intense flavors of brambly blackberries and ripe blackcurrants, some leathery funk, a little bit of earthy garrigue, light umami notes of gamey meat and a hint of dried flowers.
A very harmonious and attractive vintage of MdDG that was both surprisingly youthful and surprisingly light and delicate for the house style. I guess the fact that this was from a magnum bottle explains why this was so youthful compared to the surrounding vintages, while the very cool temperatures during the harvest explains the relative lightness and delicate nature of this vintage. Although many of the greatest vintages in our vertical tasting were those that were the biggest and most concentrated, this was nevertheless one of the great favorites of the evening despite its light, delicate body, all thanks to its beautiful vibrancy, poise and sense of focus. I have no idea if a standard-size bottle is still performing as well as this wine, but there is not going to be any hurry with any magnums out there. They will keep - if not still improve - for a long time. Very highly recommended.

From a magnum, strong cassis flauvors, spiciness, attractive fragrancy, pure and clean, elegant rather than robust, good medium acidity which together with the fruit, supporting tannins and youthfulness make this one of my favourites in the vertical.

Not providing a rating as this is so far from a style I like. Objectively good winemaking but very ripe, rich, alcoholic. Still very primary fruit (candies from the 15-16%).

Always loved this wine. Floral, some Brett, leather on nose. Excellent balance with lovely finish. Seems to be holding fine, but not sure it will get better with further cellaring.

Thanks to BurgNick, first time tried this cult wine from Languedoc. It is typically being referred as the Grand Cru of South of France. It is also one of the first to adopt full organic farming in the region. On the nose, very Bordeaux sensation (if I tasted blind, I would have guessed it is an aged Bordeaux wine), earthiness, modest leather, black tea, and gravel, on the palate, black currants, roasted leafs, soil, tannin was very gentle and smooth. 1998 is said to be one of the best vintages for them. I think it is a good wine, but I do think this wine is slightly lack of depth and structure, finish was not long, not sure if it was already at or past peak?

Pnp. Lovely bordeaux nose with black currant, herbs, earth and cedarwood. Palate was soft with expressive sweet black fruit. It just lacked a tad bit more weight on the palate. Drinking beautifully now.

First bottle of an owc case. Slow oxed for 60 mins before serving. Nose has barnyard, tobacco, black fruit, funk and dried herbs. Palate has well integrated tannins with smoke, earth and black fruit. A bordeaux style wine that has hint of rhone character. Drinking very well now. 91-92

Medium ruby with a slight hint of brick on the rim. Really lovely and complex nose of red fruit, cedar and spices. On the palate medium+ body with silky mouthfeel. The tannins are really smooth and integrated. I was expecting a bigger wine, but really can't complain. It seems like it is on a very nice spot at the moment. There isn't any hurry to drink up and the fruit is still there and tertiary flavors are still very much at the background. We finished this with grilled venison fillet and it was just off this world!

Medium ruby. Perfectly stored, no seepage. At first, quite round and somewhat simple, with Cabernet showing. Developing depth in the glass over the next hour plus, showing some dried herbs in a bit of tobacco. Next to the 2006, it was by comparison substantially more gentle and delicate.

I like Zweder's description - thyme dominates the initial nose and there is a slight funk (like a mild Pegau or Musar). A little tart on opening, with air a nice mid-palate richness develops with plenty of acidity remaining providing freshness, although entry and finish are a bit watery. In the month this remains herbal. Great with food, but needs drinking - in a gental decline. First bottle from a pristine new (regular bottle - mags will be even better). Drink to 2020. 91pts

Not much in terms of discolouration, dark core. Very barnyardy on the nose, getting worse and worse over time rather than blowing off. Not much else unfortunately. Also on the palate not very pleasant - drying tannins, a bit all over the place.

Beautifully balanced, intriguing wine with character. I still struggle with the 80% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend as I can't spot it as it feels more like a Bordeaux / Rhone cross - and actually maybe that is what it is... lovely.

Something of a way-back machine for me, as it really scratched an itch I'd had for some time - a return to a place I hadn't been since 2011. This was that place, now in my glass. Everything I look for in a mature wine, with things still stitched neatly into place, which is to say it's ageing well. So good right now, you're tempted to work through the bottle at a good pace, but best to take one's time with this one as it just keeps on unfolding for hours. Terrific food wine. Thru 2020. recommended
Served non-blind.

This wine is now in its perfect drinking window. What were rougher rustic wines have become age worthy in this estate's hands. Soft tones of aged cabernet, some Rhone grapes to add rustic character, but overall a very dark cherry color delivering a smooth, non -tannic wine that stays the course over a long meal. Bright ruby notes on the nose along with a bit of funk and moss. On the palate a slightly sweet but well balanced soft version of cabernet in Bordeaux, with nice length and a hint of pine needles, smoke and dark cherry and mint. Only issue was the astronomical restaurant price.

Alas, my last bottle and PNP first night at end of a very nice dinner party. mature but still vibrant fruit and good dark color. Earthy flavors and yet the dark fruits hold their own with medium long finish....even better second night where wine was a bit more open and fruit strutting its stuff more. Lovely

3rd of 12. Living in the Languedoc where older bottles are rare, this wine was quite a revelation. Significantly evolved since the last bottle it was complex - pine needles, herbs, undergrowth, sour cherry and blackberry but still with vitality and great balance. Medium length. A good illustration why some of these wines should be given some time. 4+/5

Medium(+) intensity, complex nose with truckloads of barnyard, stable, funk and animals. Dried black plum, dried blackberry, moldy strawberry, cassis, garrigue spice, bayleaf, green bell pepper, tobacco, leather and decaying leaf.
Medium(+) body, medium(+) resolved tannins and medium acidity. Medium(+) intensity of flavors. Less funk and more fruit on the palate. A nice balance between dried and fresh black fruit, garrigue spice, green bell pepper, tobacco and leather. The finish is medium(+) and has a distinct smokiness to it, almost like smoked meat.
This bottle was in a great spot this night. A great mix of fruit, tertiary aromas and funkiness. Ready to drink!

Monthly Tuesday group #003: Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l'Hérault vertical of 16 vintages (by DJ): This is a completely different style compared to the older wines we had at this vertical. There are a lot of herbs and spices (garrigue) in the bouquet with e.g. thyme, beautiful oak, vanilla and some pleasant barnyard. The bouquet is just gorgeous. Only sniffing is almost enough. On the palate spices like clove, cinnamon, red berry fruits, chocolate, a bit of pleasant sweetness, beautifully soft acidity and round and soft, powdery tannin. A beautiful wine. In general; all the older vintages we tasted remind more or less to Bordeaux. This is more a Rhone style of wine, but different in a lovely way. For me this was the WOTN. Ready now and probably no problem keeping this until 2020.

In a great place right now. Some welcome tertiary funk, but also a lovely clarity of fruit that brings it all together into one lovely drinkable whole. I would never have guessed that this was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon....
On the basis of this I would say that it won't improve, but there is no huge rush to drink it. Whatever: enjoy!

Surprisingly primary cassis juice aromas mixed with herbs. Reminded me of making a kir. Riper tones, too, but not overdone--in fact, it strikes me as quite fresh. Fleshy cassis and black fruited palate with an edge I'm perceiving as rather bitter. Evolving very slowly, although the tannins are mild and mostly resolved. I like this and if I had more I'd be inclined to wait a couple more years before trying the next bottle. It is not on the decline, that's for sure.

CC at Hot Box. Along with the 1990 C.V.N.E. Rioja, Viña Real, Gran Reserva, this was my WOTN. But whereas the C.V.N.E. seemed to be fading somewhat by the end of the evening this just gained steam. Fascinating aromas which almost, but not quite, seemed to have a bit of funk. Still very deeply fruited, I really enjoyed keeping my nose in the glass. The palate was richly textured, balanced, and vibrant. Sure wish I had more.

Clear, dark brick red, fading to the rim, very little sediment. Clean nose, complex, berries, liquorice, earth, mushrooms. Medium palate, tannins still somewhat evident, a little tart, still some fruit. Medium finish. Not quite as exceptional as I'd been expecting, but still very good. No hurry to drink up.

It's always fun opening a bottle bought at the domaine - certainly when it's 15 years old. This is very good, and I'm quite sure in a blind setting that everyone would be yelling left bank-Bordeaux as the glass is approaching their noses. This is Cabernet Sauvignon with catpee, cassis, bay-leaf, a tone of licorice and it all sits together very nicely. Mouthwise it gives much of the same, tannins more or less melted all the way down, an old school-fruit without a lot of sweetness, good acidity and mineral. It's quite complex but in an understated way. It's very good, especially with our lamb. But I realise that although it's very good, the aromatics aren't the most exciting. This is what it is, there is no elusiveness, very few things that are contradictive. You return to the glass because it is very good, not because it's fascinating. 89-90.

Opened in place of a clearly over the hill 1990. The 1998 was lovely straight after a double decant to remove the sediment. Complex bouquet, good length and rich burgundian flavour. Still some tannin left with balancing acidity. Probably best to drink up in the next year or two in view of my experiences with Daumad Gassac from the early nineties which are really past it.

My last three bottles were underwhelming so this came as a nice surprise. A much brighter nose and taste, without the rustic, rather stodgy finish. Plenty of the same jammy blackberry, loganberry and garrigue strawberries as before, but much more clearly defined. I still don't think this is the equivalent of a Bordeaux CC, but it is a very good wine in its own right. I had two batches and never separated them in my cellar, so I'm guessing this came from the original case.

Decanted 1hr before tasting. Fairly chunky sediment in the bottle, but contents clear once decanted. Great nose - like mature Bdx, with cedar and dark fruit. Tannins well integrated and the wine is drinking nicely, improving over two hours - my father in law thought it a decent mature Bdx, and I didn't pick p on the rusticity that there's have found. Very nice bottle indeed and a bargain at <£20.

A little unfair to compare this to other wines, but the price is the same as many Bordeaux CCs which have far more complexity and character than MdDG. Good jammy fruit with blackberry, loganberry and hints of garrigue strawberry, nice roundness on the palate, but there is a coarse rusticity to the finish that lets it down. I wouldn't expect much improvement because I think that this fault will become more apparent with more time.

This was a great bottle of wine. I drank the same wine a few years ago and it had still not fully matured. Tannins were still a bit strong. This 15 yr. old bottle has been in my cellar for about 5 1/2 years. It is a good example of a wine that has matured to the point of having the tannins fall away leaving a very smooth wine that still retained much of its original fruit. I was impressed with the balance, texture and fruit remaining. The body was a bit lighter than the first bottle tasted years ago, but it was still a Medium to Full bodied wine. The wine finishes Long.

89-90 pts

A deep colour, showing no sign of age; intense, aromatic nose; very fresh on the palate, with pure, clean fruit, good depth and a slightly dry finish: perhaps there is still some residual tannin. This is drinking very well and is unlikely to improve, but should hold up well for some time yet.

Not sure what to make of this wine, never been, really. Performing admirably as a claret replica, but these days who wants a copy when you can have originality and quality from wine regions all over the world? Oh well. At any rate, the '98 drinks beautifully now, cedar&blackcurrant on steroids, with a hint of the wild, hillside herbs and cured meat. Full bodied, fat fruit, integrated tannins. Ends on a long, slightly sweet note. Good balance and a quality wine, yes, doubtlessly so. I just wish it were a bit more original. Drink now or leave up to 5 years.

Not decanted. Bright dark red showing little signs of age. Spicy, herby Côte du Rhône style. Still fresh with rich berry fruits and the start of some aromas. Good balance, still tannins on the finish but plenty of fruit to support. Paired with pork fillet in Serrano ham, red onion confit and braised endive and was an excellent match to the sweetness of the confit, bitterness of the endive and saltiness of the ham. Excellent (90-94)

Still very dark in color--looks very young. Dark, ripe red and black fruit on the nose; a bit of licorice; at first there seemed to be a whiff of Brett but that quickly went away. Aromas seem as primary as the color. Dark berry liqueur-like in the mouth, with a still-hefty jolt of tannins. Not roasted or overdone. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems a tad simple. A good wine though not as complex as I might have expected--my expectations may have been too high. Perhaps it's still too young.

I would agree with the most recent couple of notes about restrained, leather and dried cherry in a very balanced and easy to drink style. This is a style that I really like; true old fashioned winemaking. The tannins are quite leathery, and the fruit is there but not overpowering. Cedar with slight cabbage on the nose, cherries and tobacco in the mouth. Really good. I'm glad I've got another 11 of them!

In a very nice drinking window, much improved from the last bottle over two years ago (which was aromatically nice, but a bit tough on the palate). This is beginning to approach maturity, although there is still quite a tannic finish so it should last well and continue to evolve. There is plenty of blackcurrant fruit, with hints of liquorice, spice and smoke. It has good depth, but it could perhaps do with a bit more richness to round it off.

No notes taken; took this bottle to dinner at the Fig Cafe last night. Very nice deep color. Classic cabernet nose, could be a Bordeaux. Palate shows herbs and understated black fruit; also quite dry, with some leather and earth. The lovely nose developed well over the course of an hour. The palate was elegant and restrained, and just started showing its full potential after an hour. Wait a couple of years for the next bottle.

A beautiful pure nose of blackberry and cassis, smoke, crushed blackcurrant leaves, and orange zest. Super lift. In the mouth, medium to full bodied, substantial, and with unobtrusive tannins. Sweet vanilla, cedar - then a rush of red and black fruit. A neat dry finish. Really nice, if a touch lacking acidity. All in all very "claretty". It wouldn't be out of place on the Left Bank - maybe even in St Julien! Decanted for 3 to 4 hours but ready for business from the moment the bottle was opened.

$95 restaurant price. Though at first glance I thought the price was a bit steep, the sommelier allowed me to sample it first (they were also featuring it with their degustation menu), and it really was fantastic, so that's what we went with. Near perfect parining with lamb cooked three ways (chop, tenderloin and braised). I really wish I had bought some of this on release and will certainly look for some now... Deep, black fruit, earth, ash, leather. Gorgeous texture. This wine has it all and is drinking perfectly right now - great balance of fruit and decay. Wow.

I like Zweder's description - thyme dominates the initial nose and there is a slight funk (like a mild Pegau or Musar). A little tart on opening, with air a nice mid-palate richness develops with plenty of acidity remaining providing freshness, although entry and finish are a bit watery. In the month this remains herbal. Great with food, but needs drinking - in a gental decline. First bottle from a pristine new (regular bottle - mags will be even better). Drink to 2020. 91pts

Thru 2020. recommended

Significantly evolved since the last bottle it was complex - pine needles, herbs, undergrowth, sour cherry and blackberry but still with vitality and great balance. Medium length. A good illustration why some of these wines should be given some time. 4+/5

Clear, medium intensity, garnet color.

Nose reminded me of stones that had been out in sun all day. Minerality on nose Herbaceous.
Balanced fruit on palate. Hint of menthol.
Soft. Easy to drink. No obvious tannins.
Went well with ribeye steaks.

Attractive, perfumed nose of raspberry, cherry and redcurrant with hints of herbs and mint; the palate is pure, refreshing and reasonably full; some dryness on the finish, but this is still holding up well. Fine.

I would agree with the most recent couple of notes about restrained, leather and dried cherry in a very balanced and easy to drink style. Still a bit tannic on opening and benefits a great deal from an hour or 2 of air just to soften it up and round things out.....works well with food and so easy and smooth to drink...terrific bottle of wine

This is a style that I really like; true old fashioned winemaking. The tannins are quite leathery, and the fruit is there but not overpowering. Cedar with slight cabbage on the nose, cherries and tobacco in the mouth. Really good. I'm glad I've got another 11 of them!

WES - Mas de Daumas Gassac (LSE Holbourn): Intense and dark. Big fruit led nose with classic Cab notes of cassis with ripe raspberry for me too. Some vanilla sweetness with hints of clove and woodiness. Big rich mouth feel with dominant tannins, almost stewed fruits on the palate. Long and bone dry - still has not reached it's peak.

In a very nice drinking window, much improved from the last bottle over two years ago (which was aromatically nice, but a bit tough on the palate). Very deep color; lovely aromatics, with herbs and black olives; tannins resolving nicely. Not sure whether it will improve, but it should hold very well for a few years. Very nice wine!

This is beginning to approach maturity, although there is still quite a tannic finish so it should last well and continue to evolve. There is plenty of blackcurrant fruit, with hints of liquorice, spice and smoke. It has good depth, but it could perhaps do with a bit more richness to round it off.

Very interesting wine with the garrigue aromas combined with the typical Cabernet cassis. A concentrated blend of Southern France and Cabernet, with the Cab winning out with air time. Still relatively tight. I'll sit on the rest of my bottles for another five years or so.

Brick red colour with a hint of violet. Expressive nose of red fruits with a hint of farmyard. In the mouth red fruits, leather, a touch of tobacco. Medium modied with very nice mouth feel and supple tannins. Well integrated and good finish. Should improve as still slightly closed. Very good value for the 15 euros en primeur price.

Wow.

Soft and delicate, extreme complexity, meaty, loads of character, good length, still developing and has at least five years more of development.
