Tasting outside on a warm, calm evening. Poured two glasses using the Coravin:
2009 Bouchard Volnay Cailleret, Cuvee Carnot: Medium red. Nose is a little smoky and faintly cherries. In the mouth it is more expressive of cherry, sandlewood. Silky, not quite medium body, a little drying tannin.
2009 Bouchard Volnay Clos des Chênes: Medium red. Slight nose of medium red cherry. This more sturdy than the Cuvee Carnot, more body, more tannin and more flavour - and it seems younger. Longer finish. Very good.

Thin amber rim on medium red. Sour cherry, faint wood, cherry candy nose. Palate has cherry, spice cake, sweet feeling followed by good acid and slightly spicy finish. Solid but not deep or complex enough to be impressive. I have to say it is disappointing to cellar these bottles for a decade and have this experience. the next day the last glass from the bottle shows a little more depth and concentration.
Opened 3hrs prior to dinner. Slow oxed in btl & Reidel Vinums till closer to dinner. Started sniffing & sipping 75 minutes prior to dinner. Color is semi translucent ruby red. Nose shows a forthcoming array of roses, spice, underbrush & hint of menthol. In a pretty good place 13yrs out from harvest. Palate offers energetic red & dark fruit, mineral, earth, emerging sous bois & again a hint of menthol. The texture is suave w/ a sense of '09 richness after a couple hrs air. Showing much more depth & resolution than my last in 2015. I'll attempt to hold off on my last btl till its 20th. 13.5% Alc.

Holding up quite well. The color is nice and youthful, and though there is a fair bit of fruit on the nose, they are starting to dry out just a bit. The body and concentration are quite light- the extraction here is very gentle. I have no idea if there were whole clusters used, but it feels like there were. Flavors are raspberry and strawberry, with a light fresh woody element- kind of like those untreated pine boards that have just been sawed through at the lumber yard. Lovely and lively in the mouth, without a hint of heaviness, though the finish is not as long as I might hope. Complexity overall is medium to medium minus. Enjoyable for sure, though not profound.

Medium red. Bouquet is lightly concentrated medium red berry, woody element, or is it stem? There is alcohol, acid and tannin showing but red fruit concentration is light. Despite the boney structure there is a sweetness to the fruit towards the bottom of the bottle.

Brown edge. Maturing strawberry, smoke slightly stemmy nose. Now that it has been open 3 hours the fruit is generous, red berry, caramel. Silky feel, no pushover, though. Medium length finish. This wine may improve but greatness is probably too much to hope for.

Longest Coravin test to date with the first pour last Sept for a bit over 11 months. Held up well with no signs of being previously tasted. If anything has improved with additional age. Went real well with Pork Tenderloin. This time showing a much more sweet cherry angle. Really balanced without any harsh edges. And consistent with my latest preferences, this is on the lower alcohol side in the 13's. May be time to try some of my other red Burg's.

Very glad I didn't give up on this wine after the icky 2005, as it's now back to being an absolute top-notch Volnay, and this one is a borderline grand cru-quality showing. It is robust, but refined, as it offers deep, rich, multilayered fruit on top of a stony mineral base that gives it a real sense of solidity, as if something at the core of it were starting to harden like concrete. At the same time the fruit material just washes over the palate with this mellifluous, comfort-wine texture. The Burghound review called this too ripe. I don't agree, but it's fair to say that it is obviously ripe. In fact, there's prtty much nothing subtle about this, but as rich as it is, all the proportions are right - this is one of those Caillerets that's almost Musignyesque in its scale and refinement, and frankly if there were anything extreme or unbalanced here it wouldn't be as drinkable as it is.
We drank this along side a 93 Chevillon 1er Cru tonight which was very very informative. I opened this shortly before leaving for Tilia and decided it needed a quick flash double decant which wasn't enough to tame the youthful oakiness. This wine shows great balance, a lovely lacy texture and abundant fruit but... but... but, the tasting group consensus is it needs time to resolve the oak. Enjoyable now especially, if you drink it stand alone and not side by side with a more fully realized mature Burg. Probably 10yrs to really start to show its stuff but at least 3-5yrs. I plan to buy more based on the sound material but won't touch the next btl for at least 3-5yrs.

See through ruby; perfumy nose of violets, dark cherry, and spice; extremely pretty, rose, cherry, and spice coming from good French oak, lots of bitter limestone minerality to balance out the fruit at this stage, overall a soft and pretty wine.

Medium red, brilliant. Ripe cherries, butterscotch and an undercurrent of something dark like cherry syrup. Silky, viscous feel, spice and cherry. Medium concentration. Finishes with medium toasted oak. The tannin is fine and soft and acid is refreshing. For the first 2 hours this wine shows some baby fat - needs time to show some sap. Leave until 2015+ or decant vigourously

Showed exceedingly well along side an awseome '02 Chevillon NSG- Les Perierries. Will be better still after an addl 3-5yrs for further integration of the oak but, already in the very nice place. Great lift and elegance on a focused sappy palate. A must own & drink red Burgundy. I'll be buying some of these soon!

I am relativley new to Burgundy, and this wine was recommended as good match for a pork bellly course of a wine dinner. The wine itself was earthy, rich and smooth with cherry notes, but the real star was how well it worked with the crisp pork belly, lentils de puy, pea puree and glazed escargot.

Red cherry and some off putting oak char and spice on the nose. Moderately elegant palate (more Volnay than the Bousse) with some tart fruit elements and some spice kick on the back end. I like my Volnay a little less round and less oaky. I hope the oak settles down, the fruit is rich so it can stand up to it.

2009 Volnay (Beltramo's, Menlo Park): Medium ruby. Tart cherry aromatics. After the Faiveley, airier and back to a more typical weight for Volnay. More so than the fruit, the high char oak does most of the talking from start to finish, giving the wine real smokiness but also some astringency on the back end. Too bad that the wood is so exaggerated.

The aromatics begin with forward spicy red cherry notes with an underlying stem component. The color is a vibrant medium to dark ruby that is appropriate for the wines age. The medium bodied palate shows richness and concentration with a medium length finish. The wine shows a strong sense of ripeness on the both the bouquet and palate. Hopefully a few years of bottle age will bring additional complexity, balance and nuance.

A bit reticent on the nose at the moment, but there is fresh red cherry here, maybe a touch of savauge. This has a wonderfully silky mouthfeel--and you can tell that there is also a purity of fruit here, held up by quite a bit of structure, which is also submerged. Quite ripe as well, with black cherry and ripe red raspberry. Outstanding, and a good match for my fiance's 29th birthday.

Shows a lot of ripeness, perhaps overripe. A perfumed wine with a touch of smoky burnt quality to it. Very Volnay, lighter on the palate than many of the other wines in the range, with a little sweetness to the fruit. I feel a bit of alcoholic burn on the palate upfront, but the sweet fruit manages to linger on the finish. Quite decent for the price, but a bit overripe for me. 91-92+ if you like the style, but fans of taut, acid-laden wines may want to look elsewhere.

2009 Volnays (Beltramo's, Menlo Park, CA): Pretty nose of fresh red cherry, raspberry and baking spice. Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. Nice mix of tart and ripe cherries, flowers and minerality.

Bouchard Père & Fils wines (Stockholm): Serious nose, dark fruit, some flowers, well integrated oak. Palate with good concentration, some sweetness of fruit, tar, powerful tannins of a velvety character. Young, 90-91 p.

91-92+ if you like the style, but fans of taut, acid-laden wines may want to look elsewhere.

great fruit component that seems inherent in the vintage. but there was a lovely balancing acidity to the finish that provided great lift and energy to the wine. really a very pure young and vibrant expression of volnay. delicious... i'll be getting more.

Bright fruits, rich and creamy. Still wide open and youthful, this is not subtle at this stage but it was enjoyable and will be explosive and big.
