  • 2014 Pride Mountain Vineyards Syrah

Started the bottle on Christmas and came back to it the following night. On first inspection, there’s lots of bramble fruit and a hint of barnyard funk on the nose the second day all were dramatically better and pronounced.

The wine is a deep dark purple obsidian. You could get lost just into it. There was some sediment on the neck and more at the end of the bottle, but the wine remained crystal clear and was never decanted.

I may have missed the window by a year or two on this one. As the wine delivers all that you would expect from Syrah but a long finish. Black and red berries bounce around your mouth and tongue preparing it for the bacon fat to follow, finished off by a quiet symphony of sage, cedar, and homemade blackberry jam.

So fire up Track #6 on Christmas with Dino from 1966 and open up another bottle if you have one!

Wow! I should have read the other reviews here. Tight is an understatement on this wine, it’s so tightly wound you’d think the bottle was going to turn inside out. Astringent and unapproachable is the best way to describe it. I will leave it until tomorrow and give it another rip. The color is awesome, but it even smells tight. Menthol and hints of wet earth funk and fungi. After an hour in the glass it’s calmed down, but not really. I will give it another go in a day or two, stay tuned.

Everyone once in a while you find that bottle that you probably should have drank years ago…this is that bottle. Here’s the thing, it’s held up very nicely. Dark garnet, and still clean, red raspberry and some pomegranate and wet gravel and some barn funk on nose. Didn’t have it with food which might have helped it along. The tannins have held tight surprisingly. It’s leathery off the rip, but has some forrest floor and blue and black fruit. The finish is long gone and has some kirsch and berry compote. Needs some Zac Brown (Free) or Old Dominion (Hotel Key) to bring it home.
