Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): Interestingly, no one picked up on the TCA until 3-4 hours after dinner. It was actually a pretty pleasant wine right at the beginning too, with a light touch of red fruit and plenty of floral perfume. On the back end though, this was an incredibly tannic beast, and for me, the challenge is going to be finding the point in time where this still shows fruit, but the tannins are more resolved.

This is wound up rather tight upon opening, started to loosen up with air over a few hours, but never fully hit its stride. The Volnay cherry and florals were there but restrained at this stage. Needs another 5+ years.

Decidedly young following the gorgeous 1989 but showing quite approachable and in an early peak window. Seamless with fresh, concentrated red cherry and so much floral complexity. This should go another decade+ and continue to improve.

Joyce Farms vs. Green Circle (Chicago, IL): This still feels young, especially in context with the older Volnays on the table tonight. It's more leathery and has a far more significant tannic backbone. Nevertheless, the fruit profile here is still quite clear, but it doesn't reach the delineated heights of the 1989 tonight. A wine that will certainly be much more interesting with time -- but I'm not sure that a mere 9 years will age this to the same point as that lovely 1989.

Still some tannin but not hard, black cherry, some mocha and smoke notes. Good length, good showing. A-/B+
