Deep deep garnet red with no aging signs on the edges. Crazy for a 27 year old ITALIAN wine.
The nose is classic mature Bordeaux with pencil led, refined dark fruit. Very youthful.
On the palate you get depth of flavors. Layer and layers of goodness, dark fruit, leather, spices, funk and cherries – and still so potent. Superb balance. Incredible after so long.
Big big surprise. My first encounter with the Masseto. If this is what Masseto brings from a weak vintage then I cannot wait to try a better one!
Garnet in color but surprised by the vibrancy of color after 26 years. Notes of balsamic, leather, stewed fruit and tobacco. Dry, medium body, med acidity, smooth tannins. Wine is still drinking well, but I think I may have missed its peak by 5-10 years. I always enjoy older wine and appreciate how something you consume can be enjoyed so many years after being made.

An enormous improvement over the only other 1993 I had, with much more weight and structure. No decant, though it did show improvement with air. Gorgeous layers of sweet red fruit, along with a touch of smoke, mint and tea. Spellbinding, wanted to nurse it along all evening, but gave in too easily to my enthusiastic thirst for it.

Sauv. Blanc and Merlot Night (Bear and Star, Los Olivos, CA): In great shape, gentle, Old World in style, fading slowly and graciously. Sweet, herbal nose (actually reminded me of a Hill of Grace), with just a touch of barnyard (mild brett, like sour cream). Smooth, loads of black fruit, endless finish.

A hint of iron minirality. Dark fruits, some smokey notes then cherry, chocolate, cedar, cassis. With twirling of the glass you get a nose full of anise wood and fruit nicely meshed together. Smooth tannin's on the palate. Everything is well integrated less spicy than the previous vintages just tasted cigar, cedar, herbal finish.
