Two bottles tasted text to eachother one opened three days in advance and one freshly decanted. The difference is noticeable and almost remarkable. This is still a young wine, but after three days open it is really lovely.
The '16 Via Nuova is a very well-made wine, but the style is clearly not my preference. As such, I find it a bit hard to rate, but I rated it for my enjoyment level.
On the nose, I found expressive aromatics of dark red to black cherry, sweet spices, dark chocolate, dark floral tones, lavender, and fresh herbs. It is a very dark, spicy expression, with quite a bit of influence from the chocolate and spice tones, I assume a consequence of the wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full in body, quite intense at this stage, but with fine grained tannins and a sense of creaminess that makes it drinkable despite technically being highly tannic. I found dark red cherry fruits, black floral tones, dark chocolate, and sweet baking spices on the palate.
While technically this wine was very good, at least in this showing, I found the expression a bit muddled and a bit too dark and spicy for my tastes in Nebbiolo. I'd be interested in trying this wine with more age. I actually found more enjoyment in the '18 Mosconi from Chiara Boschis at La Festa this year, finding that wine a bit more classic than this '16 Via Nuova.
