Musique & Vin Festival BYO Dinner (Château de Meursault): Late night, small glass, brief note. Red and black cherry with Asian five spice and good density. Rich start, ever-so-slightly bitter finish. Good weight. Probably further upside.

Bright red. Spicy nose, very vosne. The palate is silky, sweet and opulent, very suchots, with brambly dark fruits, and licorice. A little bit of gas remains on the tongue, which went off after 1 hour. The mouthfeel is silky and very velvety, soft, oak is very well integrated at this stage. Would not have guessed 2011. Mounting, yet gentle finish. Lacking a bit of verve for my taste, but very seductive. Would an earlier harvest bring more tension ? Very well made though, in an opulent style. On day 2 the wine became a little more structured. This is ready for business and I do not see any reason to hold the wine, but it can be kept for another 10 years so no rush... Suchots is the cote rotie of burgundy.
One thing on Burghound notes. AM rated it 91 or 92, so it seems AM gives better notes when tension and minerality is present rather than opulent sweetness of fruit. Does AM underrates HN ? This bottle is tremendous for opulent wine lovers, but still very good for those who prefer more tension filled wines (I am in this last category).
I would try this suchots with a lean and acidic dish, as the wine is quite sweet. Chicken grilled with olives and asparagus (or with a slightly acidic or bitter vegetable) would pair well with the opulent nature of the wine.

Bouquet was good but somehow there was some fizziness to the wine and the taste and finish was underwhelming. Perhaps just this bottle’s condition?
