Christmas lunch with the wine ark boys (Porcine, Oxford Street): Medium minus intensity aromas prove savoury, eucalyptus, earth, crisp blackcurrant to the fore, slight leather and non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Medium plus intensity acidity tending to sour, juicy, blackcurrant, tight grippy quite woody tannins show a little cedar, slight alcohol warmth on the finish.

Lunch with the wine ark boys (Fix St. James, 111 Elizabeth Street, Sydney): Blackcurrant, coffee, caramel, mocha, vanilla, leather, surprisingly polished oak, rich. Juicy acidity tends to the very slightly sour, slight alcohol warmth, blackcurrant fruit, chalky tannins though the oak is less obvious on the palate but sweet spice and cedar in support. Nice

A hit as soon as it was released, this 1990 is still in superb condition at 32 years of age. Thick purple-red, the wine has a pungent nose of violets, cedar wood, pepper and wet undergrowth. The tannins still grip a beautifully balanced, lengthy palate of ribena, black cherries, plums and chocolate. After an hour in a decanter, tobacco character emerges more strongly on the nose. Delicious with surprisingly fresh, sweet fruit after two hours in a decanter. After three hours, everything is in harmony - a seemless experience of nose and palate. After four hours, I increased its score. A great example of the ageing potential of the Wynns Black Label. Second growth Bordeaux quality with riper, South Australian fruit. An Australian classic.

Unbelievable for a 30+ wine. Deep garnet colour. No sign of oxidation. Black fruit nose. Long palate with plenty of acid. My last bottle. This wine will go further.

Little or no ullage but the cork was very crumbly. The nose had the characteristic peppermint nose with a hint of blackberry and pronounced cigar box. The palate was very Bordeaux like showing leather and background spice. A lovely balance was the hallmark. This wine shows how long lived Coonawarra Cabernet can be from a notably superior vintage.
