  • Deep dark garnet in color with slight clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of cigar box notes of tobacco & cedar, earthy/dusty notes, mint, pepper, spices, herbs, leather, tea, minerals & a hint of vanilla in the background. Medium-full bodied with a very good concentration well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & plums with spices, herbs, minerals & a hint of oak/vanilla. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well with decanting & airing but at 38 years of age, it is at its peak of development so although it may cling to its current plateau, I suspect there will no further development with additional aging. Fill at lower range of neck; cork stained partial (1/4) but otherwise intact.

  • Cork disintegrated while opening. Decanted to relieve cork and heavy sediment. Lighter finish but right on for Merlot of this age. Bordeaux style fruit, dry and earthy. Finish is a little funky.

  • Q2 2017 Tasting - The Anti-Sideways (aka Merlot) (The Apt): A bonus bottle at the end of a long Merlot tasting. These were mostly just for fun and they lived up to that. Fruit fully faded - at this point it's all leather and cigar box. I didn't really mind though. Could taste the age more here than on the '86 or the '89.

  • From magnum ... Opened and decanted about an hour before serving with grilled prime ribeye steaks, for my daughter's birthday dinner. Still an opaque dark red in color, with just the faintest hint of browning. Initially, the nose offered a rather sharp acidic note, which wasn't encouraging. This wasn't evident on the palate, though. Subdued red fruit flavors, with some earthiness. Tannins seemed fully resolved, but perhaps still contributing to the slightly drying finish. This wine was clearly past its prime, but still offered a very good drinking experience and showed very well as a birth-year wine.
