  • Each of the three Drouhin Chambolle 1ers ('90, '88, and '76) showed a surprisingly youthful and dense bouquet of dark red and blue berry fruit. Quite floral with Chambolle perfume and some musty character. Each was a 2014 Drouhin Library Release. Totally forgot about my bottle from two years ago, and tonight's was indeed a better showing, also also short of sensational. The aromatics here are detailed and complex, but mostly tertiary. This is thinning and drying out and that rusty / iron note remains valid. Palate is in good shape with light red cherry sweetness.

  • Dry Riesling and Burgundy night (Olea, New Haven): I liked this more than other people - this is not a wine that evokes much in the way of fruit descriptors, though it's certainly compelling. There's some faded red and dark berried fruit here, but it's in the background and dominated by much more tertiary notes of leather, dried flower petals, herbs, and a faintly stewed/roasted note on the nose. The palate though is surprisingly fresh and lively still, and there's good acidity beneath that gives this lift. Very nice.

  • A library release from the Drouhin family cellar. Bottle was in absolutely perfect condition, as was the wine, it just wasn't very interesting. The wine was very clean and began with basic medium red fruit. After an hour or so more interesting notes of coffee grounds, tanned leather, and thin top soil showed up. Shortly thereafter it sort of died into rust and iron with highly sterilized / surgical aromas. Went through another wave of brief life after about two hours, but all in just wasn't that exciting, not bad, not flawed, just plain and sort of disappointing for a '76 1er cru. Whatever, worth the risk once. Maybe the next one will be amazing, but sort of doubtful.
