  • Each of the three Drouhin Chambolle 1ers ('90, '88, and '76) showed a surprisingly youthful and dense bouquet of dark red and blue berry fruit. Quite floral with Chambolle perfume and some musty character. Each was a 2014 Drouhin Library Release. The '88 was the best wine of the flight with the most leathery and earthy nuance to the darker perfumed fruit. A nice soily texture on the palate too. Imagine this is about peak maturity.

  • “Collection Privee da la Famille Drouhin. Sortie de cave en Juillet 2014”..... so, straight from their cellar to mine and pre-tasted by the family for quality control. Perfectly transparent, somewhat watery ruby colour threatening towards amber. Nose is less autumnal and more savoury than expected plus some sous bois and slightly candied black berry fruit.... but reticent and requires being chased after, although it filled out quite a lot after 5 hours from opening. Palate is initially somewhat unpleasantly thin and rather tart strawberry and red currant fruit with slightly damp forest floor and some black peppercorns spiciness and Christmas Pudding spices (although less tart or thin three hours after opening). Ah, but after 5 hours it has put on quite a lot of weight and has become much more savoury and alluring. Not much tannin left and very dilute in terms of length or resonance on the finish. My first impending disappointment with many “Collection Privee” purchases.... I really tried to enjoy this but it was very hard work. Fortunately it redeemed itself after 5 hours from opening. The last glass was by far the best and it even developed a really nice resonance and reverberance on the finish. I will decant my remaining two bottles and give them a lot of time before serving. 91...eventually.

  • Started out tight, but opened up over 30 or 40 minutes in a decanter. Beautifully elegant and balanced. Floral red fruits and spices with earthy forest floor and tea notes. This bottle wasn't showing any signs of fading, but I think now's the time to drink this.
