I'm an admirer of Dujac's 1998s and the Morey 1er is no exception. A complex bouquet of red and black fruit, autumn leaves, rich soil tones, warm spice and vinesmoke is followed by a broad, transparent and intense wine with good cut and persistence. The tannins are nicely melted and the wine is attractively approachable.

Surprisingly pale colour, faded garnet to almost teracotta at the rim. Fuller, quite red-fruited and smokey nose. Ripe and rounded on the atatck, good smokey dark red fruit and a touch of spice that holds across the mid-palate. Decent finish and quite long. Good acidity carries through well. Lovely. ***1/2

Pale garnet core, wide pale orangeing rim. Perfumed almost ethereal nose with sweet strawberry fruit, floral notes, gamey, spicy edge. Medium bodied on the palate, on the lean side but not in an unattractive way with firmish but fine tannins. Ripe strawberry fruit on initial attack, some savoury gamey notes, spice, reasonably intense on the mid-palate with fresh acidity carrying a lingering sweet finish with a few notes of liquorice. Lovely and drinking well.

Tasting Group Dinner - Burgs & Rhones at Heidi's (Heidi's, Minneapolis): Enticing nose of sour cherry, leather, and earth. The palate is medium weight and surprisingly complex, showing layers of red fruit, earth, licorice, and tea. Gorgeous purity and balance. A great showing for this wine.
