Community Tasting Notes (10) Avg Score: 89 points

  • Another Medoc wine dying gracefully...
Mid-shoulder fill. Cork came out in one piece. no sign of cork taint.
Significantly cloudy; did not settle significantly even over 5 hours.
The fruit is, not surprisingly, gone. The tannin structure is gone, so the acidity becomes more obvious. Significant loss of color and amber hue at this point.
The nose is entirely on the earthy side, decomposed leaves, spicy notes on the end. Quite lean at this point; almost sharp for a red wine. Finish is short. The earthy side is insufficient to merit a good score.Probably a good 20 years past peak...A score would not be meaningful at this point.

Re-tasted after another 24 hours decanting. The wine has finally cleared up and, consequently, the aromas are a little better defined. The cigar box and slight remnant of prune eau-de-vie have emerged . Even at this reduced intensity, it is definitely more interesting

  • Musty enough to be unpleasant, probably cork taint, but nothing about this bottle suggested this wine has much life left.

  • Five Decades of Cos D'Estournel with Richard Brazier (Handford Wines, London): The colour was cloudy and we expected a gone wine but far from that it was alive. Ok rustic, light and thin on the fruit, light sweet core, but especially with some food this would have been an enjoyable wine and a pleasant experience. A good surprise. 89 but a good 89

  • Mature in colour, quite discoloured, slightly cloudy. Earthy nose, spices, tobacco, mint, dirt. Smooth, good balance, round, slightly tart with not a lot of fruit left, but delicate and intriguing.

  • Bordeaux light, but not nearly as bad as I had expected. The nose was the best part with its tobacco, earth, gravel, red berry and spicy aromatics. Medium bodied, lacking intensity, but it offered a certain type of fully mature, Bordeaux charm in its light, red berry dominated finish. Much of the success of this bottle was clearly due to the fact that is was shared by the original owner who took care of it since release.
