Vinous Monfortino Dinner with Roberto Conterno; 2/1/2024-2/2/2024 (Legacy Records, NYC): The '70 was brownish in the glass, which was particularly apparent when comparing it to the '71 later, which was still a vibrant red. It seemed quite advanced and Madeira-like at first, but did freshen up a bit with air. I found iron, porcini / earth, dried red fruits and floral tones, and sweet spices / a madeira like sweetness to the wine. On the palate, it was a bit fresher in my opinion than the aromatics, with smoky red fruit, earth, and dried red florals, with largely integrated tannins. Likely not a perfect bottle.

Saturday lunch with Eddie (Masseria, DC): En magnum with $4.99 price tag. Explosive nose displaying intense dry fruit, dry cherry, fruitcake, licorice strong iron, balsamico and tar, baking spices, molasses and earth. Unbelievable concentration, packed cherry black fruit, unctuous, bright acidity, strong mineral presence and the dark fruit driven finish that never ends. In magnum format, it is incredibly youthful perhaps need another ten years. Unbelievably powerful wine.

Still kicking, but this example feels as though it is a bit tired.

Almost caramel-like at this point, spicy and effusive. Tiring.

Very disappointed of course, there are hints of dark fruit but old sour tannins are the main feature.
