This was exactly what it should have been and it was stunning. Wines of War dinner with 10 1941-1945 wines. This Monfortino had by far the best nose - classic barolo. Umami, earth, light spice, hints of leather. Shocking how vibrant the nose was. On the palate this was very light and delicate yet at the same time was not thin or clipped. The color was the lightest red you can imagine yet that did not signal what the wine would smell or taste like. This was very well put together and a pure joy to drink. 94+

The Great Barolo Tasting (Taberna): Still pleasurable enough, but this had clearly gone further downhill than the 1947 that preceded it. The colour had similar faded, so that this was more amber / orange than reddish brown. And while the nose was just lovely with its toss of earth and fragrant spice and dried flowers dancing around a core of honey and apple flesh notes, the palate was clearly thinning out. The tannins had gone, but there was enough acidity to keep it just about alive, showing lots of spice and herb, even something gingery, to go alongside sweet stone fruit and honey notes. It seemed rather empty after the attak at first, trailing away into a dried herb finish. Time in the glass did it some good, with the midpalate filling up quite surprisingly with gentle honeyed tones. Overall though, this was a wine enjoyed for its fading charm, with most vestiges of its former glory now long gone.

Knightsbridge Night at Next, El Bulli Menu (Next - Chicago IL): Great treat to enjoy tonight, although frankly more interesting than great per se. Some dried rose petals to start, with sweet fruit aromas and flavors that make me suspect this was somehow fortified. Mostly earthy with good lingering red fruit and hints of licorice and black pepper.
