Festa dal Barolo 2019 Masterclass (The Pool, Manhattan): A powerful direct nose of iron, savory, dark fruits, and nettles. Meaty full bodied impressively structured wine that is about power more than finesse or charm. Quite structured for a '97 and still holding it together. Brooding and still not yet at peak. Impressive for sure, but a wine to admire more than love. 94

Vinous Monfortino Dinner with Roberto Conterno; 2/1/2024-2/2/2024 (Legacy Records, NYC): The '97 was a pleasurable wine that is good to drink today, although I didn't find it that complex, at least in this bottle. I found ripe red fruit, dried red florals, smoke, and spices, and on the palate, it was silky with largely integrated tannins, one of the more texturally approachable wines of the tasting.

Excellent. This was served double-blind after a few hours of aeration decanter; I guessed 1997 Monfortino. My guess was based on the unique signature(s) of the wine, not necessarily my abilities. Clearly inside its preferred window now (and I suggest drinking this within the next decade - not because it's about to expire, but because there's so much to adore). This continued to develop, at a good clip, over the two hours it was open. Above average length, with even more complexity. However, it's the elegance factor here, that, for me, sets this wine apart, makes it so easily identifiable. The tar and roses factor here are poignantly obvious, and really add to the brilliant experience. 14,0% abv. highly recommended
Visited a friend today who asked if I would like a glass of wine. He pulled this one from his cellar. He had bought it on release, and stored it well. Popped and poured (well it wasn’t quite that simple, the cork broke, so we poured it into a decanter through a strainer). The color was a perfect Nebbiolo color. Nose was big, as in BIG, lots of sour cherries, tar, red fruit. It was quite a mouthful, again with the cherries, lots of complexity, coated the palate wonderfully. Long finish. Given its age, this might have faded over time, but there were four of us, and we didn’t give it a chance to fade. One of the better Barolos I have had.

Perfect conservation of the bottle. It’s right in perfect drinking window. Just opened the bottle couple of hours before, blood orange, red fruits, spices , complex , really soft tannins, long finish and always changing every time I poured the wine again in the glass

(Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva) Explosive nose of spices (cardamon, clove, allspice,) and ripe cherry fruit. Some floral notes and hot rocks. Pretty exotic and very ripe but thoroughly captivating. A panoply of spices with a serious mineral underpinning. Ripe and expansive with a very lush mouthfeel and great concentration. Very complex already and so approachable it is almost scary. Long winding finish with big tannins that are very ripe. You know this has alot to give in reserve but it is unreal right now.
(Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Riserva) Just a sicko wacko twisted nose of pure cherry fruit, cocoa, hay, minerals and watermelon. So pure and ethereal. Incredibly ripe and dense palate with dark cherry fruit and some of that watermelon on the nose. Lots of spice adds to the complexity. I could not get over how ripe this was. A fruit soaked finish that did not quit. Kind of open but you know this will be monumental in 30+ years.
