  • Mid-neck fill. Crumbly cork removed in pieces. Decanted and served. Clear youthful deep dark garnet-blood red color with no bricking. Musty bouquet at first, freshening over two hours. Classic notes of cigar tobacco, dried porcinis, cassis, dried red cherries and berries, old leather, cedar chips, mossy tree bark. Silky mouthfeel, seamless, beautiful balance. Improved steadily over two hours with no sign of maderization. Clearly in its tertiary phase of maturation, with the fruit elements fading compared to a previous tasting six years ago, but with plenty of life remaining.

  • Decanted. Clear deep dark garnet-blood-brick red color. Wonderful notes of cigar tobacco, dried mud, juicy red fruit, leather, truffles. Old World style, like a fine old St. Julien. Noticeably more evolved than a previous bottle a year ago. Drink up.

  • Fill into neck, cork removed intact. Not decanted. Clear garnet-blood red color. Initial funkiness blew off within five minutes to reveal a gorgeous bouquet of luscious sweet red fruit, cigar box, mushrooms, stony soil, dark baking spices, dried flowers. Similar on the palate, seamless, beautiful balance, polished silky-satin mouthfeel. Improved with air, gaining purity and freshness after an hour. As superb as its famous predecessor the 1973. Thrilled to have two more bottles.

  • Slightly corked, but still had great fruit remaining for its age. Pity it was affected by TCA, as I think it'd showed really well given it's 40 year age. Fun to get to try anyhowm since two vintages after it won the Paris tasting.

  • Another surprise from a dear friend's basement. The fill was bottom of the neck. Color was amazing, with no sign of bricking even at the edge of the glass. Nose was somewhat muted except for the funk of its age. Decanted and poured, the funk disappeared within a few minutes to reveal a rich cab that belied its age. For anyone who thinks Cali Cabs can't age - your wrong.
