Burgundy Tasting (Restaurant Brunnenstube, Beinstein): Tasted blind. Clear, deep ruby color. Nose was airy and a bit muted. On the palate very round, balanced and harmonious. Fine, but a bit drying tannin, elegant, juicy and fresh. Good length. 92-93

A dark colour; dark, slightly perfumed fruit, medium to full on the palate, but with a slightly dilute element. A fairly thick texture and good length. Good for current drinking.

2019 Visit to North Canterbury, NZ: Also Mark’s wine and again excellent. Deep and dark ruby colour. Aromatic with herbs, spices, dark soil, sous bois, blackberries, dark plums and other largely black fruit. Savoury aromas with a little Gevrey animale (meant as a positive descriptor). On palate, intense and concentrated with plenty of earth, underbrush, dark berry fruit and some dried and freshly cut herbs. Nicely framed by fine grained oak tannins, not yet completely resolved. No green pyrazine quality. Approachable and relatively open. Drink or hold (for 20+ years, I’d think).
